Eyring-Kramers asymptotics for infinite-dimensional stochastic gradient systems

We study small-noise asymptotics for a class of reversible stochastic evolution equations in infinite dimensions. The dynamics are of the form \[ dX_t=-A\nabla F(X_t)\,dt+\sqrt{2\beta^{-1}A}\,dW_t, \] where $F$ is a regular multi-well potential, $A$ is a selfadjoint mobility operator, $W$ is a cylindrical Brownian motion and $\beta\gg 1$ is the inverse noise strength. The invariant measure is a Gibbs perturbation of a Gaussian reference measure, and the resulting framework covers, in particular, the stochastic Allen-Cahn and stochastic Cahn-Hilliard equations on bounded intervals. In the double-well case, we derive a sharp asymptotic formula for the first nonzero eigenvalue of the generator. This gives an infinite-dimensional Eyring-Kramers law for the spectral gap, with exponential rate determined by the communication height and leading prefactor determined by the local quadratic behavior at the relevant minima and saddle points. Our approach provides a general strategy for lifting finite-dimensional Eyring-Kramers analysis to infinite-dimensional stochastic gradient systems.

A Note on the Construction of Trial States for the Dilute Bose Gas

We review how the local particle number cutoff introduced in [11] is used to build trial states for the dilute Bose gas that capture the substantial correlation structure of the ground state in the thermodynamic limit. In particular, we provide a simplified derivation of the Lee-Huang-Yang correction as an upper bound for the ground state energy.

The Lee-Huang-Yang energy for a dilute gas of hard spheres: an upper bound

We consider a quantum gas consisting of $N$ hard spheres with radius $\frak{a} > 0$, obeying bosonic statistics and moving in the box $\Lambda = [0;L]^3$ with periodic boundary conditions. We are interested in the ground state energy per unit volume in the thermodynamic limit, with $N, L \to \infty$ at fixed density $\rho = N / L^3$. We derive an upper bound for the ground state energy density, matching the famous Lee-Huang-Yang formula, up to lower order terms, in the dilute limit $\rho \frak{a}^3 \ll 1$.

Adiabatic Klein-Gordon Dynamics for the Renormalized Nelson Model

We study the renormalized Nelson model in a semiclassical regime where the field becomes classical while the particle remains quantum. The degree of classicality is measured by a small parameter $\varepsilon \ll 1$. In this scaling the particle evolves on microscopic times, whereas the field exhibits nontrivial dynamics only on the macroscopic scale $t=\mathcal{O}(\varepsilon^{-2})$. The natural semiclassical model is the coupled Schr\"odinger-Klein-Gordon (SKG) system, which encodes the time-scale separation through an explicit $\varepsilon$-dependence. Based on this scale separation in SKG, we apply the adiabatic principle to derive a new PDE for the classical field, the $\varepsilon$-free adiabatic Klein-Gordon (aKG) equation, where the field is driven by the instantaneous ground state of the particle. Our main result is a norm approximation of the Nelson dynamics by the aKG solution corrected by a quasi-free fluctuation dynamics around the classical field, generated by a renormalized Bogoliubov-Nelson Hamiltonian. As a corollary, we obtain convergence of the reduced one-body densities for both subsystems, where the fluctuation correction vanishes, thereby justifying aKG as a semiclassical Born-Oppenheimer type approximation of the renormalized Nelson model.

Proof of the Landau-Pekar Formula for the effective Mass of the Polaron at strong coupling

We study the Fr\"ohlich polaron in the regime of strong coupling and prove the asymptotically sharp lower bound on the effective mass $m_{\mathrm{eff}}(\alpha)\geq \alpha^4 m_{\mathrm{LP}}-C\alpha^{4-\epsilon}$, where $m_{\mathrm{LP}}$ is an explicit constant. Together with the corresponding upper bound, which has been verified recently in [5], we confirm the validity of the celebrated Landau-Pekar formula [12] from 1948 for the effective mass $\underset{\alpha\rightarrow \infty}{\lim}\alpha^{-4}m_{\mathrm{eff}}(\alpha)=m_{\mathrm{LP}}$ as conjectured by Spohn [25] in 1987.

Second order energy expansion of Bose gases with three-body interactions

We provide a second order energy expansion for a gas of $N$ bosonic particles with three-body interactions in the Gross-Pitaevskii regime. We especially confirm a conjecture by Nam, Ricaud and Triay in [22], where they predict the subleading term in the asymptotic expansion of the ground state energy to be of the order $\sqrt{N}$. In addition, we show that the ground state satisfies Bose-Einstein condensation with a rate of the order $\frac{1}{\sqrt{N}}$.

A Short Proof of Bose-Einstein Condensation in the Gross-Pitaevskii Regime and Beyond

We consider dilute Bose gases on the three dimensional unit torus that interact through a pair potential with scattering length of order $ N^{\kappa-1}$, for some $\kappa >0$. For the range $ \kappa\in [0, \frac1{43})$, \cite{ABS} proves complete BEC of low energy states into the zero momentum mode based on a unitary renormalization through operator exponentials that are quartic in creation and annihilation operators. In this paper, we give a new and self-contained proof of BEC of the ground state for $ \kappa\in [0, \frac1{20})$ by combining some of the key ideas of \cite{ABS} with the novel diagonalization approach introduced recently in \cite{Br}, which is based on the Schur complement formula. In particular, our proof avoids the use of operator exponentials and is significantly simpler than \cite{ABS}.

Diagonalizing Bose Gases in the Gross-Pitaevskii Regime and Beyond

We present a novel approach to the Bogoliubov theory of dilute Bose gases, allowing for an elementary derivation of the celebrated Lee-Huang-Yang formula in the Gross-Pitaevskii regime. Furthermore, we identify the low lying excitation spectrum beyond the Gross-Pitaevskii scaling, extending a recent result [3] to significantly more singular scaling regimes. Finally, we provide an upper bound on the ground state energy in the Gross-Pitaevskii regime that captures the correct expected order of magnitude beyond the Lee-Huang-Yang formula.

Friedrichs Diagrams -- Bosonic and Fermionic

We give a mathematically precise review of a diagrammatic language introduced by Friedrichs in order to simplify computations with creation and annihilation operator products. In that language, we establish explicit formulas and algorithms for evaluating bosonic and fermionic commutators. Further, as an application, we demonstrate that the non-linear Hartree dynamics can be seen as a subset of the diagrams arising in the time evolution of a Bose gas.

The Fr\"ohlich Polaron at Strong Coupling -- Part II: Energy-Momentum Relation and Effective Mass

We study the Fr\"ohlich polaron model in $\mathbb{R}^3$, and prove a lower bound on its ground state energy as a function of the total momentum. The bound is asymptotically sharp at large coupling. In combination with a corresponding upper bound proved earlier, it shows that the energy is approximately parabolic below the continuum threshold, and that the polaron's effective mass (defined as the semi-latus rectum of the parabola) is given by the celebrated Landau--Pekar formula. In particular, it diverges as $\alpha^4$ for large coupling constant $\alpha$.

Characterisation of gradient flows for a given functional

Let $X$ be a vector field and $Y$ be a co-vector field on a smooth manifold $M$. Does there exist a smooth Riemannian metric $g_{αβ}$ on $M$ such that $Y_β= g_{αβ} X^α$? The main result of this note gives necessary and sufficient conditions for this to be true. As an application of this result we show that a finite-dimensional ergodic Lindblad equation admits a gradient flow structure for the von Neumann relative entropy if and only if the condition of BKM-detailed balance holds.

Validity of Bogoliubov's approximation for translation-invariant Bose gases

We verify Bogoliubov's approximation for translation invariant Bose gases in the mean field regime, i.e. we prove that the ground state energy $E_N$ is given by $E_N=Ne_\mathrm{H}+\inf σ\left(\mathbb{H}\right)+o_{N\rightarrow \infty}(1)$, where $N$ is the number of particles, $e_\mathrm{H}$ is the minimal Hartree energy and $\mathbb{H}$ is the Bogoliubov Hamiltonian. As an intermediate result we show the existence of approximate ground states $Ψ_N$, i.e. states satisfying $\langle H_N\rangle_{Ψ_N}=E_N+o_{N\rightarrow \infty}(1)$, exhibiting complete Bose--Einstein condensation with respect to one of the Hartree minimizers.

Emergence of Anyons on the Two-Sphere in Molecular Impurities

Recently it was shown that anyons on the two-sphere naturally arise from a system of molecular impurities exchanging angular momentum with a many-particle bath (Phys. Rev. Lett. 126, 015301 (2021)). Here we further advance this approach and rigorously demonstrate that in the experimentally realized regime the lowest spectrum of two linear molecules immersed in superfluid helium corresponds to the spectrum of two anyons on the sphere. We develop the formalism within the framework of the recently experimentally observed angulon quasiparticle.

Molecular Impurities as a Realization of Anyons on the Two-Sphere

Studies on experimental realization of two-dimensional anyons in terms of quasiparticles have been restricted, so far, to only anyons on the plane. It is known, however, that the geometry and topology of space can have significant effects on quantum statistics for particles moving on it. Here, we have undertaken the first step towards realizing the emerging fractional statistics for particles restricted to move on the sphere, instead of on the plane. We show that such a model arises naturally in the context of quantum impurity problems. In particular, we demonstrate a setup in which the lowest-energy spectrum of two linear bosonic/fermionic molecules immersed in a quantum many-particle environment can coincide with the anyonic spectrum on the sphere. This paves the way towards experimental realization of anyons on the sphere using molecular impurities. Furthermore, since a change in the alignment of the molecules corresponds to the exchange of the particles on the sphere, such a realization reveals a novel type of exclusion principle for molecular impurities, which could also be of use as a powerful technique to measure the statistics parameter. Finally, our approach opens up a new numerical route to investigate the spectra of many anyons on the sphere. Accordingly, we present the spectrum of two anyons on the sphere in the presence of a Dirac monopole field.

Sharp Tunneling Estimates for a Double-Well Model in Infinite Dimension

We consider the stochastic quantization of a quartic double-well energy functional in the semiclassical regime and derive optimal asymptotics for the exponentially small splitting of the ground state energy. Our result provides an infinite-dimensional version of some sharp tunneling estimates known in finite dimensions for semiclassical Witten Laplacians in degree zero. From a stochastic point of view it proves that the $L^2$ spectral gap of the stochastic one-dimensional Allen-Cahn equation in finite volume satisifies a Kramers-type formula in the limit of vanishing noise. We work with finite-dimensional lattice approximations and establish semiclassical estimates which are uniform in the dimension. Our key estimate shows that the constant separating the two exponentially small eigenvalues from the rest of the spectrum can be taken independently of the dimension.
