On Homogeneous Decomposition Spaces and Associated Decompositions of Distribution Spaces

A new construction of decomposition smoothness spaces of homogeneous type is considered. The smoothness spaces are based on structured and flexible decompositions of the frequency space $\mathbb{R}^d\backslash\{0\}$. We construct simple adapted tight frames for $L_2(\mathbb{R}^d)$ that can be used to fully characterise the smoothness norm in terms of a sparseness condition imposed on the frame coefficients. Moreover, it is proved that the frames provide a universal decomposition of tempered distributions with convergence in the tempered distributions modulo polynomials. As an application of the general theory, the notion of homogeneous $α$-modulation spaces is introduced.

Weighted Thresholding and Nonlinear Approximation

We present a new method for performing nonlinear approximation with redundant dictionaries. The method constructs an $m-$term approximation of the signal by thresholding with respect to a weighted version of its canonical expansion coefficients, thereby accounting for dependency between the coefficients. The main result is an associated strong Jackson embedding, which provides an upper bound on the corresponding reconstruction error. To complement the theoretical results, we compare the proposed method to the pure greedy method and the Windowed-Group Lasso by denoising music signals with elements from a Gabor dictionary.

Investigations of the effects of random sampling patterns on the stability of generalized sampling

We investigate how the choice of spatial point process for generating random sampling patterns affects the numerical stability of non-uniform generalized sampling between Fourier bases and Daubechies scaling functions. Specifically, we consider binomial, Poisson and determinantal point processes and demonstrate that the more regular point patterns from the determinantal point process are superior.

A Characterization of Sparse Nonstationary Gabor Expansions

We investigate the problem of constructing sparse time-frequency representations with flexible frequency resolution, studying the theory of nonstationary Gabor frames in the framework of decomposition spaces. Given a painless nonstationary Gabor frame, we construct a compatible decomposition space and prove that the nonstationary Gabor frame forms a Banach frame for the decomposition space. Furthermore, we show that the decomposition space norm can be completely characterized by a sparseness condition on the frame coefficients and we prove an upper bound on the approximation error occurring when thresholding the frame coefficients for signals belonging to the decomposition space.

Generalized Sampling in Julia

Generalized sampling is a numerically stable framework for obtaining reconstructions of signals in different bases and frames from their samples. In this paper, we will introduce a carefully documented toolbox for performing generalized sampling in Julia. Julia is a new language for technical computing with focus on performance, which is ideally suited to handle the large size problems often encountered in generalized sampling. The toolbox provides specialized solutions for the setup of Fourier bases and wavelets. The performance of the toolbox is compared to existing implementations of generalized sampling in MATLAB.

Determinantal point process models on the sphere

We consider determinantal point processes on the $d$-dimensional unit sphere $\mathbb S^d$. These are finite point processes exhibiting repulsiveness and with moment properties determined by a certain determinant whose entries are specified by a so-called kernel which we assume is a complex covariance function defined on $\mathbb S^d\times\mathbb S^d$. We review the appealing properties of such processes, including their specific moment properties, density expressions and simulation procedures. Particularly, we characterize and construct isotropic DPPs models on $\mathbb{S}^d$, where it becomes essential to specify the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions in a spectral representation for the kernel, and we figure out how repulsive isotropic DPPs can be. Moreover, we discuss the shortcomings of adapting existing models for isotropic covariance functions and consider strategies for developing new models, including a useful spectral approach.

Projection operators on matrix weighted $L^p$ and a simple sufficient Muckenhoupt condition

Boundedness for a class of projection operators, which includes the coordinate projections, on matrix weighted $L^p$-spaces is completely characterised in terms of simple scalar conditions. Using the projection result, sufficient conditions, which are straightforward to verify, are obtained that ensure that a given matrix weight is contained in the Muckenhoupt matrix $A_p$ class. Applications to singular integral operators with product kernels are considered.

On Schauder Bases Properties of Multiply Generated Gabor Systems

Let $A$ be a finite subset of $L^2(\mathbb{R})$ and $p,q\in\mathbb{N}$. We characterize the Schauder basis properties in $L^2(\mathbb{R})$ of the Gabor system $$G(1,p/q,A)=\{e^{2πi m x}g(x-np/q) : m,n\in \mathbb{Z}, g\in A\},$$ with a specific ordering on $\mathbb{Z}\times \mathbb{Z}\times A$. The characterization is given in terms of a Muckenhoupt matrix $A_2$ condition on an associated Zibulski-Zeevi type matrix.

The restricted isometry property meets nonlinear approximation with redundant frames

It is now well known that sparse or compressible vectors can be stably recovered from their low-dimensional projection, provided the projection matrix satisfies a Restricted Isometry Property (RIP). We establish new implications of the RIP with respect to nonlinear approximation in a Hilbert space with a redundant frame. The main ingredients of our approach are: a) Jackson and Bernstein inequalities, associated to the characterization of certain approximation spaces with interpolation spaces; b) a new proof that for overcomplete frames which satisfy a Bernstein inequality, these interpolation spaces are nothing but the collection of vectors admitting a representation in the dictionary with compressible coefficients; c) the proof that the RIP implies Bernstein inequalities. As a result, we obtain that in most overcomplete random Gaussian dictionaries with fixed aspect ratio, just as in any orthonormal basis, the error of best $m$-term approximation of a vector decays at a certain rate if, and only if, the vector admits a compressible expansion in the dictionary. Yet, for mildly overcomplete dictionaries with a one-dimensional kernel, we give examples where the Bernstein inequality holds, but the same inequality fails for even the smallest perturbation of the dictionary.

Trigonometric quasi-greedy bases for $L^p(\bT;w)$

We give a complete characterization of $2π$-periodic weights $w$ for which the usual trigonometric system forms a quasi-greedy basis for $L^p(\bT;w)$, i.e., bases for which simple thresholding approximants converge in norm. The characterization implies that this can happen only for $p=2$ and whenever the system forms a quasi-greedy basis, the basis must actually be a Riesz basis.

Alternative approaches to the Casalbuoni-Brink-Schwarz Superparticle

Wigner's method of induced representations is applied to the N=1 super-Poincare group, and by using a state corresponding to the basic vector of the little group as a Clifford vacuum we show that the spin operator of a supersymmetric point particle obeys Wigner's constraints. As dynamical variables for the particle we use canonical coordinates on the symmetry group manifold. The physical phase space is then constructed using a vielbein formalism. We find that the Casalbuoni-Brink-Schwarz superparticle appears as a special case of our general construction. Finally, the theory is reformulated as a gauge theory where the gauge freedom corresponds to the choice of spin constraints or, equivalently, the free choice of relativistic center of mass. In a special case the gauge symmetry reduces to the well known kappa-symmetry.

Explicit construction of constrained instantons

Instantons in massless theories do not carry over to massive theories due to Derrick's theorem. This theorem can, however, be circumvented, if a constraint that restricts the scale of the instanton is imposed on the theory. Constrained instantons are considered in four dimensions in phi^4 theory and SU(2) Yang-Mills-Higgs theory. In each of these theories a calculational sceme is set up and solved in the lowest few orders in the mass parameter in such a way that the need for a constraint is exhibited clearly. Constrained instantons are shown to exist as finite action solutions of the field equations with exponential fall off only for specific constraints that are unique in lowest order in the mass parameter in question.
