Quantum Boltzmann equation for fermions: An attempt to calculate the NMR relaxation and decoherence times using quantum field theory techniques

Extracting macroscopic properties of a system from microscopic interactions has always been an interesting topic with the most diverse applications. Here, we use the quantum Boltzmann equation to investigate the density matrix evolution of a system of nucleons. Using the quantum field theory tools for constructing the density matrix operators and calculating the interactions is the main advantage of this equation. The right-hand side of this equation involves forward scattering and usual collision terms. As examples of application, we calculate the standard Bloch equations for the nucleon system in the presence of a constant and an oscillating magnetic field from the forward scattering term. We find the longitudinal and transverse (decoherence) relaxation times from the collision term by considering the nucleon-nucleon scattering.

CMB $V$ modes from photon-photon forward scattering revisited

Recent literature has shown that photon-photon forward scattering mediated by Euler-Heisenberg interactions may generate some amount of the circular polarization ($V$ modes) in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) photons. However, there is an apparent contradiction among the different references about the predicted level of the amplitude of this circular polarization. In this work, we will resolve this discrepancy by showing that with a quantum Boltzmann equation formalism we obtain the same amount of circular polarization as using a geometrical approach that is based on the index of refraction of the cosmological medium. We will show that the expected amplitude of $V$ modes is expected to be $\approx$ 8 orders of magnitude smaller than the amplitude of $E$-polarization modes that we actually observe in the CMB, thus confirming that it is going to be challenging to observe such a signature. Throughout the paper, we also develop a general method to study the generation of $V$ modes from photon-photon and photon-spin-1-massive-particle forward scatterings without relying on a specific interaction, which thus represent possible new signatures of physics beyond the Standard Model.

Distinguishing Dirac from Majorana neutrinos in a microwave cavity

We propose a novel scheme for distinguishing between the Dirac and Majorana nature of neutrinos via interaction of a neutrino beam with microwave photons inside a cavity. We study the effective photon-photon polarization exchange induced by the photon-neutrino scattering. The quantum field theoretical studies of such effective picture are presented for both Dirac and Majorana neutrinos. Our phenomenological analyses show that the difference between Dirac and Majorana neutrinos can manifest itself in scattering rate of the photons. To enhance the effect a cavity scheme is employed. An experimental setup based on microwave cavities is then designed and simulated by finite element method to measure the scattering rate. Our results suggest that an experiment based on the current state-of-the-art technology will be able to probe the difference in about one year. However, it can be done in a few days by enhancing the neutrino beam flux or implementing with the near future equipments. Therefore, our work provides the possibility %puts the grounds for solving the long lasting puzzle of Dirac or Majorana nature of neutrinos.

CMB circular and B-mode polarization from new interactions

Standard models describing the radiation transfer of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) through Compton scattering predict that cosmological scalar perturbations at linear order are not able to source V and B polarization modes. In this work, we investigate the possibility that such CMB polarization modes are generated even in the presence of linear scalar perturbations only. We provide a general parametrization of the photon-fermion forward-scattering amplitude and compute mixing terms between different CMB polarization modes. We discuss different general extensions of Standard Model interactions which violate discrete symmetries, while preserving the combination of charge conjugation, parity and time reversal. We show that it is possible to source CMB circular polarization by violating parity and charge conjugation symmetries. Instead, B-mode generation is associated to the violation of symmetry for time-reversal. Our results provide a useful tool to constrain new physics using CMB data.

Photon-graviton scattering: A new way to detect anisotropic gravitational waves?

Gravitons are the quantum counterparts of gravitational waves in low-energy theories of gravity. Using Feynman rules one can compute scattering amplitudes describing the interaction between gravitons and other fields. Here, we consider the interaction between gravitons and photons. Using the quantum Boltzmann equation formalism, we derive fully general equations describing the radiation transfer of photon polarization, due to the forward scattering with gravitons. We show that the Q and U photon linear polarization modes couple with the V photon circular polarization mode, if gravitons have anisotropies in their power-spectrum statistics. As an example, we apply our results to the case of primordial gravitons, considering models of inflation where an anisotropic primordial graviton distribution is produced. Finally, we evaluate the effect on cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization, showing that in general the expected effects on the observable CMB frequencies are very small. However, our result is promising, since it could provide a novel tool for detecting anisotropic backgrounds of gravitational waves, as well as for getting further insight on the physics of gravitational waves.

Vector disformal transformation of cosmological perturbations

We study disformal transformations of cosmological perturbations by vector fields in theories invariant under U(1) gauge transformations. Three types of vector disformal transformations are considered: (i) disformal transformations by a single timelike vector; (ii) disformal transformations by a single spacelike vector; and (iii) disformal transformations by three spacelike vectors. We show that transformations of type (i) do not change either curvature perturbation or gravitational waves; that those of type (ii) do not change curvature perturbation but change gravitational waves; and that those of type (iii) change both curvature perturbation and gravitational waves. Therefore, coupling matter fields to the metric after disformal transformations of type (ii) or (iii) in principle have observable consequences. While the recent multi-messenger observation of binary neutron stars has singled out a proper disformal frame at the present epoch with a high precision, the result of the present paper may thus help distinguishing disformal frames in the early universe.

On the running of the spectral index to all orders: a new model dependent approach to constrain inflationary models

In conventional model independent approaches, the power spectrum of primordial perturbations is characterized by such free parameters as spectral index, its running, the running of running, and the tensor-to-scalar ratio. In this work we, show that, at least for simple inflationary potentials, one can find the primordial scalar and tensor power spectra exactly by resumming over all the running terms. In this model-dependent method, we expand the power spectra about the pivot scale to find the series terms as functions of the e-folding number for some single field models of inflation. Interestingly, for the viable models studied here, one can sum over all the terms and evaluate the exact form of the power spectra. This in turn gives more accurate parametrization of the specific models studied in this work. We finally compare our results with the recent cosmic microwave background data to find that our new power spectra are in good agreement with the data.

CMB and reheating constraints to α-attractor inflationary models

After Planck 2013, a broad class of inflationary models called α-attractors was developed which has universal observational predictions. For small values of the parameter α, the models have good consistency with the recent CMB data. In this work, we first calculate analytically (and verify numerically) the predictions of these models for spectral index, n_s and tensor-to-scalar ratio, r and then using BICEP2/Keck 2015 data we impose constraints on α-attractors. Then, we study the reheating in α-attractors. The reheating temperature, T_{re} and the number of e-folds during reheating, N_{re} are calculated as functions of n_s. Using these results, we determine the range of free parameter αfor two clasees of α-attractors which satisfy the constraints of recent CMB data.

A Non-minimally Coupled Potential for Inflation and Dark Energy after Planck 2015: A Comprehensive Study

In this work we introduce a new plateau-like inflationary model including a quadratic scalar potential coupled non-minimally to gravity. This potential has a dominant constant energy density at early times which can realize successful inflation. It also includes an infinitesimal non-zero term $V_0$ responsible for explaining dark energy which causing the universe to expand accelerating at the late time. We show that this model predicts small tensor-to-scalar ratio of the order of $r\approx 0.01$ which is fully consistent with Planck constraints. Using the lower and upper bounds on reheating temperature, we provide additional constraints on the non-minimal coupling parameter $ξ$ of the model. We also study the preheating stage predicted by this kind of potentials using numerical calculations.

Dipole Modulation in Tensor Modes: Signatures in CMB Polarization

In this work we consider a dipole asymmetry in tensor modes and study the effects of this asymmetry on the angular power spectra of CMB. We derive analytical expressions for the $C_{l}^{TT}$ and $C_{l}^{BB}$ in the presence of such dipole modulation in tensor modes for $l<100$. We also discuss on the amplitude of modulation term and show that the $C_{l}^{BB}$ is considerably modified due to this term.

Generation of CMB B-mode Polarization from Circular Polarization

In this work we consider non-zero circular polarization for the CMB radiation as a result of new interactions. We then rewrite the Boltzmann equations for the Stokes parameters $Q$, $U$ and $V$ and show that the circular polarization can generate the B-mode polarization even if no tensor perturbations are present.

Anisotropic Inflation with the non-Vacuum Initial State

In this work we study models of anisotropic inflation with the generalized non-vacuum initial states for the inflaton field and the gauge field. The effects of non Bunch-Davies initial condition on the anisotropic power spectrum and bispectrum are calculated. We show that the non Bunch-Davies initial state can help to reduce the fine-tuning on the anisotropic power spectrum while reducing the level of anisotropic bispectrum.

The Effect of Curvaton Decay on the Primordial Power Spectrum

We study the effect of curvaton decay on the primordial power spectrum. Using analytical approximations and also numerical calculations, we find that the power spectrum is enhanced during the radiation dominated era after the curvaton decay. The amplitude of the Bardeen potential is controlled by the fraction of the energy density in the curvaton at the time of curvaton decay. We show that the enhancement in the amplitude of the primordial curvature perturbation is, however, not large enough to lead to primordial black hole overproduction on scales which re-enter the horizon after the time of curvaton decay.

Anisotropic Inflation from Charged Scalar Fields

We consider models of inflation with U(1) gauge fields and charged scalar fields including symmetry breaking potential, chaotic inflation and hybrid inflation. We show that there exist attractor solutions where the anisotropies produced during inflation becomes comparable to the slow-roll parameters. In the models where the inflaton field is a charged scalar field the gauge field becomes highly oscillatory at the end of inflation ending inflation quickly. Furthermore, in charged hybrid inflation the onset of waterfall phase transition at the end of inflation is affected significantly by the evolution of the background gauge field. Rapid oscillations of the gauge field and its coupling to inflaton can have interesting effects on preheating and non-Gaussianities.

Minimal Uncertainty in Momentum: The Effects of IR Gravity on Quantum Mechanics

The effects of the IR aspects of gravity on quantum mechanics is investigated. At large distances where due to gravity the space-time is curved, there appears nonzero minimal uncertainty $Δp_{0}$ in the momentum of a quantum mechanical particle. We apply the minimal uncertainty momentum to some quantum mechanical interferometry examples and show that the phase shift depends on the area surrounded by the path of the test particle . We also put some limits on the related parameters. This prediction may be tested through future experiments. The assumption of minimal uncertainty in momentum can also explain the anomalous excess of the mass of the Cooper pair in a rotating thin superconductor ring.

Short Distance Physics and Initial State Effects on the CMB Power Spectrum

We investigate a modification in the action of inflaton due to noncommutativity leads to a nonstandard initial vacuum and oscillatory corrections in the initial power spectrum. We show that the presence of these oscillations causes a drop in the WMAP $χ^{2}$ about $Δχ^{2}\sim 8.5$. As a bonus, from the parameter estimation done in this work, we show that the noncommutative parameters can be precisely bound to $10^{16}$ GeV or $10^{4}$ GeV depending on the inflation scale.
