Temperature-Dependent THz Properties and Emission of Organic Crystal BNA

As high-average power ultrafast lasers become increasingly available for nonlinear conversion, the temperature dependence of the material properties of nonlinear crystals becomes increasingly relevant. Here, we present temperature-dependent THz complex refractive index measurements of the organic crystal BNA over a wide range of temperatures from 300 K down to 80 K for THz frequencies up to 4 THz for the first time. Our measurements show that whereas the temperature-dependent refractive index has only minor deviation from room temperature values, the temperature-dependent absorption coefficient decreases at low temperature. We additionally compare these measurements with conversion efficiency and spectra observed during THz generation experiments in the same temperature range and using the same crystal, using an ultrafast Yb-laser for excitation. Surprisingly, the damage threshold of the material does not improve significantly upon cooling, pointing to a nonlinear absorption mechanism being responsible for damage. However, we observe a significant increase in THz yield at lower temperatures, which is most likely due to the reduced THz absorption. These findings will be useful for future designs of high average power pumped organic-crystal based THz-TDS systems.

Broadband THz-TDS with 5.6 mW average power at 540 kHz using organic crystal BNA

We demonstrate efficient optical rectification in the organic crystal BNA (N-benzyl-2-methyl-4-nitroaniline), driven by a temporally compressed, commercially available industrial Yb-laser system operating at 540 kHz repetition rate. Our THz source reaches 5.6 mW of THz average power driven by 4.7 W, 45 fs pulses and the resulting THz-TDS combines a very broad bandwidth of 7.5 THz and a high dynamic range of 75 dB (in a measurement time of 70 s). The conversion efficiency at maximum THz power is 0.12%. To the best of our knowledge, this is the highest THz power so far demonstrated with BNA, achieved at a high repetition rate, and enabling to demonstrate a unique combination of bandwidth and dynamic range for THz-spectroscopy applications.

Ab initio molecular dynamics modelling of organic crystal electro-optical properties

Molecular dynamics calculations were preformed on organic crystals 4-N,N-dimethylamino-4'-N'-methyl-stilbazolium tosylate (DAST) and 4-N,N-dimethylamino-4'-N'-methylstilbazolium 2,4,6-trimethylbenzenesulfonate (DSTMS). Vibrational modes of the structures were investigated to examine the single unit cell phononic contribution of the organic crystals to their terahertz generating capabilities. Linear optical properties were also calculated from snapshots of the molecular dynamics structures through Green-Kubo relations, and compared with experimental transmission.

Milliwatt average power, MHz-repetition rate, broadband THz generation in organic crystal BNA with diamond substrate

We demonstrate a 13.3 MHz repetition rate, broadband THz source with milliwatt-average power, obtained by collinear optical rectification of a high-power Yb-doped thin-disk laser in the organic crystal BNA (N-benzyl-2-methyl-4-nitroaniline). Our source reaches a maximum THz average power of 0.95 mW with an optical-to-THz efficiency of 4e-4 and a spectral bandwidth spanning up to 6 THz at -50 dB, driven by 2.4 W average power (after an optical chopper with duty cycle of 10%), 85 fs-pulses. This high average power excitation was possible without damaging the crystal by using a diamond-heatsinked crystal with significantly improved thermal properties. To the best of our knowledge, this result represents the highest THz average power reported so far using the commercially available organic crystal BNA, showing the potential of these crystals for high average power, high repetition rate femtosecond excitation. The combination of high power, high dynamic range, high repetition rate and broadband spectrum makes the demonstrated THz source highly attractive to improve various time-domain spectroscopy applications. Furthermore, we present a first exploration of the thermal behavior of BNA in this excitation regime, showing that thermal effects are the main limitation in average power scaling in these crystals.

Ultrafast Electron Dynamics in Magnetic Thin Films

In past decades, ultrafast spin dynamics in magnetic systems have been associated with heat deposition from high energy laser pulses, limiting the selective access to spin order. Here we use a long wavelength terahertz pump optical probe setup to measure structural features in the ultrafast time scale. We find that complete demagnetisation is possible with <6 THz pulses. This occurs concurrently with longitudinal acoustic phonons and an electronic response, followed by the magnetic response. The required fluence for full demagnetisation is low, ruling out the necessity of a high power light source.

Real-time High Resolution THz Imaging with a Fiber Coupled Photo Conductive Antenna and an Uncooled Microbolometer Camera

We present a real-time THz imaging method using a commercial fiber coupled photo conductive antenna as the THz source and an uncooled microbolometer camera for detection. Compared to other THz imaging setups, this concept is very adaptable due to its compact and uncooled radiation source, whose fiber coupling allows for a flexible placement. Using a camera with high sensitivity renders real-time imaging possible. As a proof-of-concept, the beam shape of a THz Time Domain Spectrometer was measured. We also demonstrate the potential for practical applications in transmission geometry, covering material science and security tasks. The results suggest that hidden items, complex structures and moisture contents of (biological) materials can be resolved. We discuss the limits of the current setup, possible improvements, potential (industrial) applications and outline the feasibility of imaging in reflection geometry or extending it to multi-spectral imaging using band pass filters.

Efficient Broadband Terahertz Generation from Organic Crystal BNA Using Near Infrared Pump

We are reporting on terahertz generation from organic crystal BNA using a 1.15 to 1.55 um near infrared pump. We observed a very large emission spectrum extending up to 7 THz, compared to 2.5 THz from Ti:Sa pump in previous reports. The maximum optical-to-THz conversion efficiency in our experiment was 0.8% at 1 kHz repetition rate and without saturation leading to a peak electric field of 1 GV/m. Our results show pronounced phase matching privilege for intense terahertz generation using a pump in the 1.15 to 1.25 um range where high energy near infrared pump sources operate.

Possible phonon-induced electronic bi-stability in VO$_2$ for ultrafast memory at room temperature

VO$_{2}$ is a model material system which exhibits a metal to insulator transition at 67$^\circ$C. This holds potential for future ultrafast switching in memory devices, but typically requires a purely electronic process to avoid the slow lattice response. The role of lattice vibrations is thus important, but it is not well understood and it has been a long-standing source of controversy. We use a combination of ultrafast spectroscopy and ab initio quantum calculations to unveil the mechanism responsible for the transition. We identify an atypical Peierls vibrational mode which acts as a trigger for the transition. This rules out the long standing paradigm of a purely electronic Mott transition in VO$_{2}$; however, we found a new electron-phonon pathway for a purely reversible electronic transition in a true bi-stable fashion under specific conditions. This transition is very atypical, as it involves purely charge-like excitations and requires only small nuclear displacement. Our findings will prompt the design of future ultrafast electro-resistive non-volatile memory devices.

High Efficiency and Low Distortion Photoacoustic Effect in 3D Graphene Sponge

The conversion of light in sound plays a crucial role in spectroscopy, applied physics, and technology. In this paper, light sound conversion in 3D graphene sponge through a photothermoacoustic mechanism is reported. It is shown that the unique combination of mechanical, optical, and thermodynamic properties of graphene assembled in a 3D sponge structure allows an unprecedented high efficiency conversion independent of light wavelength from infrared to ultraviolet. As a first application of this effect, a photothermal based graphene sponge loudspeaker is demonstrated, providing a full digital operation for frequencies from acoustic to ultrasound. The present results suggest a new pathway for light generation and control of sound and ultrasound signals potentially usable in a variety of new technological applications from high fidelity loudspeaker and radiation detectors to medical devices.

Subcycle insulator-to-metal transition in vanadium dioxide by terahertz-field-driven tunneling

In vanadium dioxide, the interplay between coherent lattice transformation and electronic correlation drives an insulator-to-metal transition (IMT). This phase commutation can be triggered by temperature, pressure, doping or deposition of optical energy. Here we demonstrate that an atomically-strong terahertz electric field initiates a metastable ultrafast IMT in vanadium dioxide without a concomitant lattice transformation. The free-space terahertz field acts as off-resonant excitation with photon energy below the lattice phonons and the interband transitions. Differently from optical and infrared excitation, terahertz interaction leads to a full IMT by interband Zener tunneling with a negligible entropy deposition. In previous experiments the temporal dynamics of IMT in VO2 could be only indirectly inferred. We disentangle the electronic and lattice contributions to the IMT on a sub-picosecond timescale. Near the critical temperature the IMT becomes dissipative and the terahertz field concludes the lattice-assisted metallic nucleation initiated by heating. The method of strong-field induced phase transition presented here is applicable to a wide class of strongly correlated systems and will enable the discovery of novel metastable phases.

A multi-milliJoule femtosecond Raman laser emitting at 1.28 um

We report on the generation of broadband, high-energy femtosecond pulses centered at 1.28 um by stimulated Raman scattering in pressurized hydrogen cell. Stimulated Raman scattering is performed by two chirped and delayed pulses originating from a multi-mJ Ti:Sapphire amplifier. The Stokes pulse carries energy of 4.4 mJ and is recompressed down to 66 fs by reflective grating pair. We characterized the short-wavelength mid-infrared source in view of energy stability, beam profile and conversion efficiency at a repetition rate of 100 Hz and 10 Hz. The demonstrated laser will benefit intense THz generation applications from highly nonlinear organic crystals.

Intense THz source based on BNA organic crystal pumped at Ti:Sapphire wavelength

We report on high energy terahertz pulses by optical rectification (OR) in the organic crystal N-benzyl-2-methyl-4-nitroaniline (BNA) directly pumped by a conventional Ti:Sapphire (Ti:Sa) amplifier. The simple scheme provides an optical to terahertz conversion efficiency of 0.25% when pumped by a collimated laser pulses with duration of 50 fs and central wavelength of 800nm. The generated radiation spans frequencies between 0.2 and 3 THz. We measured the damage threshold as well as the dependency of the conversion efficiency on the pump fluence, pump wavelength, and pulse duration.

Simultaneous electronic and the magnetic excitation of a ferromagnet by intense THz pulses

The speed of magnetization reversal is a key feature in magnetic data storage. Magnetic fields from intense THz pulses have been recently shown to induce small magnetization dynamics in Cobalt thin film on the sub-picosecond time scale. Here, we show that at higher field intensities, the THz electric field starts playing a role, strongly changing the dielectric properties of the cobalt thin film. Both the electronic and magnetic responses are found to occur simultaneously, with the electric field response persistent on a time scale orders of magnitude longer than the THz stimulus

The terahertz frontier for ultrafast coherent magnetic switching: Terahertz-induced demagnetization in ferromagnets

The transition frequency between nonthermal coherent magnetic precessions and ultrafast demagnetization is arguably the most sought after answer in magnetism science and technology nowadays. So far, it is believed to be in the terahertz (THz) range. Here, using an ultra-intense low frequency THz bullet, and thin magnetic layers, we report on experimental evidences that fully coherent nonthermal THz magnetic switching may never be reachable in conventional ferromagnetic thin films. At high excitation intensities, while the spins still coherently precess with the THz magnetic field, the deposited THz energy initiates ultrafast demagnetization and ultimately material damage. These series of phenomena are found to take place simultaneously. The reported experiments set fundamental limits and raise questions on the coupling between electronic and magnetic systems and the associated structural dynamics on the ultrafast time scale.

Air nonlinear dynamics initiated by ultra-intense lambda-cubic THz pulses

Air turns into a nonlinear medium for electromagnetic waves under exceptionally strong fields. However up to present, its minuscule nonlinear response has limited the exploration to the optical frequency regime owing to the availability of intense near-infrared lasers. Here, we report on the observation of large-amplitude nonlinearity in air induced by an extremely intense light bullet at Terahertz frequencies (0.1-10 THz) provoking strong air birefringence. The observed nonlinearity manifests itself as third order susceptibility. The presented nonlinear observations break the barrier for the entire exciting THz-induced nonlinear phenomena in air ranging from THz-induced self-focusing and self-phase modulation to THz solitons and filamentation.

Anomalous visualization of sub-2 THz photons on standard silicon CCD and COMS sensors

We experimentally show that indirect light-induced electron transitions could lead to THz detection on standard CCD and CMOS sensors, introducing this well-established technological concept to the THz range. Unlike its optical counterpart, we found that the THz sensitivity is nonlinear. We imaged 1-13 THz radiation with photon energy less than 2% of the well-established band gap energy threshold. The unprecedented small pitch and large number of pixels uniquely allowed us to visualize the complex propagation of THz radiation, as it focuses down to the physical diffraction limit. Broadband pulses were detectable at a single shot. This opens a whole new field of real time THz imaging at the frame rate of the sensor.
