Experimental observation of non-Hermitian higher-order skin interface states in topological electric circuits

The study of topological states has developed rapidly in electric circuits, which permits flexible fabrications of non-Hermitian systems by introducing non-Hermitian terms. Here, nonreciprocal coupling terms are realized by utilizing a voltage follower module in non-Hermitian topological electric circuits. We report the experimental realization of one- and two- dimensional non-Hermitian skin interface states in electric circuits, where interface states induced by non-Hermitian skin effects are localized at the interface of different domains carrying different winding numbers. Our electric circuit system provides a readily accessible platform to explore non-Hermitian-induced topological phases, and paves a new road for device applications.

Universal quantum computer based on Carbon Nanotube Rotators

We propose a universal quantum computer based on a chain of carbon nanotube rotators where one metallic plate is attached to each rotator. The dynamical variable is the rotational angle $ϕ$. The attached plate connected to ground electrostatically interacts with two fixed plates. Two angle positions $ϕ=0,π$ are made stable by applying a voltage difference between the attached plate and the two fixed plates. We assign $ϕ=0$ and $π$ to the qubit states $|0\rangle$ and $|1\rangle $. Then, considering a chain of rotators, we construct the arbitrary phase-shift gate, the NOT gate and the Ising gate, which constitute a set of universal quantum gates. They are executed by controlling the voltage between various plates.

Reversible Transformation between Isolated Skyrmions and Bimerons

Skyrmions and bimerons are versatile topological spin textures that can be used as information bits for both classical and quantum computing. The transformation between isolated skyrmions and bimerons is an essential operation for computing architecture based on multiple different topological bits. Here we report the creation of isolated skyrmions and their subsequent transformation to bimerons by harnessing the electric current-induced Oersted field and temperature-induced perpendicular magnetic anisotropy variation. The transformation between skyrmions and bimerons is reversible, which is controlled by the current amplitude and scanning direction. Both skyrmions and bimerons can be created in the same system through the skyrmion-bimeron transformation and magnetization switching. Deformed skyrmion bubbles and chiral labyrinth domains are found as nontrivial intermediate transition states. Our results may provide a unique way for building advanced information-processing devices using different types of topological spin textures in the same system.

Supersymmetric non-Hermitian topological interface laser

We investigate laser emission at the interface of a topological and trivial phases with loss and gain. The system is described by a Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model with site-dependent hopping parameters. We study numerically and analytically the interface states. The ground state is described by the Jackiw-Rebbi mode with a pure imaginary energy, reflecting the non-Hermiticity of the system. It is strictly localized only at the A sites. We also find a series of analytic solutions of excited states based on SUSY quantum mechanics, where the A and B sites of the bipartite lattice form SUSY partners. We then study the system containing loss and gain with saturation. The Jackiw-Rebbi mode is extended to a nonlinear theory, where B sites are also excited. The relative phases between A and B sites are fixed, and hence it will serve as a large area coherent laser.

Nonlinear dynamical topological phases in Cooper-pair box array

The topological property of a system is a static property in general. For instance, the topological edge state is observed by measuring the local density of states. In this work we propose a system whose topological property is only revealed by dynamics. As a concrete example, we explore a nonlinear dynamical topological phase transition revealed by a quench dynamics of a Cooper-pair box array connected with capacitors. It is described by coupled nonlinear differential equations due to the Josephson effect. It is trivial as far as the static system is concerned. However, the wave propagation induced by the quench dynamics demonstrates a rich topological phase diagram in terms of the strength of the input.

Universal quantum computation based on Nano-Electro-Mechanical Systems

We propose to use a buckled plate as a qubit, where a double-well potential is mechanically produced by pushing the plate from both the sides. The right and left positions of the plate are assigned to be quantum states $|0\rangle $ and $|1\rangle $. Quantum effects emerge when the displacement is of the order of picometers, although the size of a buckled plate is of the order of $1μm$. The NOT gate is executed by changing the buckling force acting on the plate, while the Pauli-Z gate and the phase-shift gate are executed by applying electric field. A two-qubit phase shift gate is materialized with the use of an electrostatic potential. They constitute a set of universal quantum gates. An examination of material parameters leads to a feasibility of a NEMS(Nano-Electro-Mechanical System)-based quantum computer.

Nonvolatile bistable memory and Ising machine based on Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems

We propose an Ising machine made of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), where the annealing process is automatically executed by a dissipation mechanism. The core structure is a series of buckled plates. Two stable positions of each plate (left and right) represent its binary state acting as a bit so that a plate works as a mechanical memory. The electrostatic interaction between adjacent plates is introduced by applying voltage. Plates continue to flip between two stable buckled positions until the series of plates reaches a local minimum due to the damping of the mechanical motion. \red{First, we design Ising machines simulating a ferromagnetic (FM) interaction and an antiferromagnetic (AF) interaction separately. Then, we propose a fully-connected MEMS\ network representing a coexistence system of FM and AF interactions in an arbitrary way, by way of which an arbitrary combinatorial problem described by the Ising model can be solved.} The present mechanism works at room temperature without external magnetic field, which is very different from the standard classical or quantum annealing mechanism.

Bifurcation of a Topological Skyrmion String

Manipulation of three-dimensional (3D) topological objects is of both fundamental interest and practical importance in many branches of physics. Here, we show by spin dynamics simulations that the bifurcation of a 3D skyrmion string in a layered frustrated system could be induced by the dampinglike spin-orbit torque. The bifurcation of a skyrmion string happens when the skyrmion string carries a minimal topological charge of $Q=2$. We demonstrate that three types of bifurcations could be realized by applying different current injection geometries, which lead to the transformation from I-shaped skyrmion strings to Y-, X-, and O-shaped ones. Besides, different branches of a bifurcated skyrmion string may merge into an isolated skyrmion string spontaneously. The mechanism of bifurcation should be universal to any skyrmion strings with $Q\geq 2$ in the layered frustrated system and could offer a general approach to manipulate 3D stringlike topological objects for spintronic functions.

Qubits based on merons in magnetic nanodisks

Merons and skyrmions are classical topological solitons. However, they will become quantum mechanical objects when their sizes are of the order of nanometers. Recently, quantum computation based on nanoscale skyrmions was proposed. Here, we propose to use a nanoscale meron in a magnetic nanodisk as a qubit, where the up and down directions of the core spin are assigned to be the qubit states $|0\rangle$ and $|1\rangle$. First, we show numerically that a meron with the radius containing only $7$ spins can be stabilized in a ferromagnetic nanodisk classically. Then, we show theoretically that universal quantum computation is possible based on merons by explicitly constructing the arbitrary phase-shift gate, the Hadamard gate, and the CNOT gate. They are executed by magnetic field or electric current. It would serve as a qubit with long coherence time as a remnant of topological stability from its classical counterpart.

Universal quantum computation based on nanoscale skyrmion helicity qubits in frustrated magnets

Skyrmions in frustrated magnets have the helicity degree of freedom, where two different configurations of Bloch-type skyrmions are energetically favored by the magnetic dipole-dipole interaction and characterized by opposite helicities. A skyrmion must become a quantum-mechanical object when its radius is of the order of nanometer. We construct a qubit based on the two-fold degeneracy of the Bloch-type nanoscale skyrmions in frustrated magnets. It is shown that the universal quantum computation is possible based on nanoscale skyrmions in a multilayered system. We explicitly show how to construct the $π/4$ phase-shift gate, the Hadamard gate, and the CNOT gate. The one-qubit quantum gates are materialized by temporally controlling the electric field and the spin current. The two-qubit gate is materialized with the use of the Ising-type exchange coupling by controlling the distance between the skyrmion centers in two adjacent layers. The merit of the present mechanism is that an external magnetic field is not necessary. Our results may open a possible way toward universal quantum computations based on nanoscale topological spin textures.

Dynamical nonlinear higher-order non-Hermitian skin effects and topological trap-skin phase

We study nonreciprocal nonlinear Schrödinger systems. As a prototype we analyze the Hatano-Nelson model together with a typical nonlinear term introduced and its generalization to two dimensions. We employ the quench dynamics, where a pulse is given to one site and its time evolution is analyzed. It is found that the skin state is always formed due to the nonreciprocal hopping and hence that the system is topological. However, the structure of the skin state is essentially modified by the nonlinear interaction because it favors a self-trapping. Four typically different states emerge as an interplay between these two interactions, depending how the pulse is trapped to the initial site. They are the skin, trap-skin, shifted-trap-skin and embedded-trap-skin states, forming four phases in the one-dimensional model. The phase boundary is determined by a gap in terms of certain phase indicators. On the other hand, we find three phases with the shifted-trap-skin phase being absent in the two-dimensional model.

Nonlinear dynamics of topological helicity wave in a frustrated skyrmion string

A skyrmion in frustrated magnetic system has the helicity degree of freedom. A skyrmion string is formed in a frustrated layered system, which is well described by the $XY$ model owing to the exchange coupling between adjacent layers. We consider a system where the interlayer exchange couplings are alternating, where the dimerized $XY$ model is materialized, whose linear limit is the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model. We argue that it is a nonlinear topological system. We study the quench dynamics of the helicity wave under the initial condition that the helicity of the skyrmion in the bottommost layer is rotated. It yields a good signal to detect whether the system is topological or trivial. Our results show that the helicity dynamics of the skyrmion string have a rich physics in the modulated exchange-coupled system.

Nonlinear topological Toda quasicrystal

Topological edge states are known to emerge in certain quasicrystals. We investigate a topological quasicrystal in the presence of nonlinearity by generalizing the Toda lattice to include modulated periodic hoppings, where the period is taken irrational to the original lattice. It is found that topological edge states in a quasicrystal survive against nonlinearity based on the quench dynamics. It is also found that an extended-localization transition is induced by the quasicrystal hopping modulation. The present model is experimentally realizable by a transmission line with variable capacitance diodes, where the inductance is modulated.

Mutual conversion between a magnetic Neel hopfion and a Neel toron

Three-dimensional (3D) magnetic textures attract great attention from researchers due to their fascinating structures and dynamic behaviors. Magnetic hopfion is a prominent example of 3D magnetic textures. Here, we numerically study the mutual conversion between a Neel-type hopfion and a Neel-type toron under an external magnetic field. We also investigate the excitation modes of hopfions and torons in a film with strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. It is found that the Neel-type hopfion could be a stable state in the absence of the external magnetic field, and its diameter varies with the out-of-plane magnetic field. The Neel-type hopfion may transform to a Neel-type toron at an out-of-plane magnetic field of about 20 mT, where the cross section structure is a Neel-type skyrmion. The hopfion and toron show different excitation modes in the presence of an in-plane microwave magnetic field. Our results provide a method to realize the conversion between a Neel-type hopfion and a Neel-type toron, which also gives a way to distinguish Bloch-type and Neel-type hopfions.

Nonreciprocal dynamics of ferrimagnetic bimerons

Magnetic bimerons are topologically nontrivial spin textures in in-plane easy-axis magnets, which can be used as particle-like information carriers. Here, we report a theoretical study on the nonreciprocal dynamics of asymmetrical ferrimagnetic (FiM) bimerons induced by spin currents. The FiM bimerons have the ability to move at a speed of kilometers per second and do not show the skyrmion Hall effect at the angular momentum compensation point. Our micromagnetic simulations and analytical results demonstrate that spin currents are able to induce the nonreciprocal transport and a drift motion of the FiM bimeron even if the system is at the angular momentum compensation point. By analyzing the current-induced effective fields, we find that the nonreciprocal transport is attributed to the asymmetry of the bimeron structure. Our results are useful for understanding the physics of bimerons in ferrimagnets and may provide guidelines for building bimeron-based spintronic devices.

Chiral edge soliton in nonlinear Chern systems

We study the effect on the chiral edge states by including a nonlinearity to a Chern insulator which has two chiral edge states with opposite chiralities. We explore a quench dynamics by giving a pulse to one site on an edge and analyzing the time evolution of a wave packet. Without the nonlinearity, an initial pulse spreads symmetrically and diffuses. On the other hand, with the nonlinearity present, a solitary wave is formed by the self-trapping effect of the nonlinear term and undergoes a unidirectional propagation along the edge, which we identify as a chiral edge soliton. A further increase of the nonlinearity induces a self-trapping transition, where the chiral wave packet stops its motion. It is intriguing that the nonlinearity is controlled only by changing the initial condition without changing a sample.

Dynamic transformation between a skyrmion string and a bimeron string in a layered frustrated system

Frustrated topological spin textures have unique properties that may enable novel spintronic applications, such as helicity-based information storage and computing. Here, we report the statics and current-induced dynamics of two-dimensional (2D) pancake skyrmions in a stack of weakly coupled frustrated magnetic monolayers, which form a three-dimensional (3D) skyrmion string. The Bloch-type skyrmion string is energetically more stable than its Néel-type counterpart. It can be driven into translational motion by the dampinglike spin-orbit torque and shows the damping-dependent skyrmion Hall effect. Most notably, the skyrmion string can be transformed to a dynamically stable bimeron string by the dampinglike spin-orbit torque. The current-induced bimeron string rotates stably with respect to its center, which can spontaneously transform back to a skyrmion string when the current is switched off. Our results reveal unusual physical properties of 3D frustrated spin textures, and may open up different possibilities for spintronic applications based on skyrmion and bimeron strings.

Configurable pixelated skyrmions on nanoscale magnetic grids

Topological spin textures can serve as non-volatile information carriers. Here we study the current-induced dynamics of an isolated magnetic skyrmion on a nanoscale square-grid pinning pattern formed by orthogonal defect lines with reduced magnetic anisotropy. The skyrmion on the square grid can be pixelated with a quantized size of the grid. We demonstrate that the position, size, and shape of skyrmion on the square grid are electrically configurable. The skyrmion center is quantized to be on the grid and the skyrmion may show a hopping motion instead of a continuous motion. We find that the skyrmion Hall effect can be perfectly prohibited due to the pinning effect of the grid. The pixelated skyrmion can be harnessed to build future programmable racetrack memory, multistate memory, and logic computing device. Our results will be a basis for digital information storage and computation based on pixelated topological spin textures on artificial pinning patterns.
