Global existence of solutions to semilinear damped wave equation with slowly decaying inital data in exterior domain

In this paper, we discuss the global existence of weak solutions to the semilinear damped wave equation \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} \partial_t^2u-Δu + \partial_tu = f(u) & \text{in}\ Ω\times (0,T), \\ u=0 & \text{on}\ \partialΩ\times (0,T), \\ u(0)=u_0, \partial_tu(0)=u_1 & \text{in}\ Ω, \end{cases} \end{equation*} in an exterior domain $Ω$ in $\mathbb{R}^N$ $(N\geq 2)$, where $f:\mathbb{R}\to \mathbb{R}$ is a smooth function behaves like $f(u)\sim |u|^p$. From the view point of weighted energy estimates given by Sobajima--Wakasugi \cite{SoWa4}, the existence of global-in-time solutions with small initial data in the sense of $(1+|x|^2)^{λ/2}u_0$, $(1+|x|^2)^{λ/2}\nabla u_0$, $(1+|x|^2)^{λ/2}u_1\in L^2(Ω)$ with $λ\in (0,\frac{N}{2})$ is shown under the condition $p\geq 1+\frac{4}{N+2λ}$. The sharp lower bound for the lifespan of blowup solutions with small initial data $(\varepsilon u_0,\varepsilon u_1)$ is also given.

Finite time blowup of solutions to semilinear wave equation in an exterior domain

We consider the initial-boundary value problem of semilinear wave equation with nonlinearity $|u|^p$ in exterior domain in $\mathbf{R}^N$ $(N\geq 3)$. Especially, the lifespan of blowup solutions with small initial data are studied. The result gives upper bounds of lifespan which is essentially the same as the Cauchy problem in $\mathbf{R}^N$. At least in the case $N=4$, their estimates are sharp in view of the work by Zha--Zhou (2015). The idea of the proof is to use special solutions to linear wave equation with Dirichlet boundary condition which are constructed via an argument based on Wakasa--Yordanov.

Critical exponent for the semilinear wave equations with a damping increasing in the far field

We consider the Cauchy problem of the semilinear wave equation with a damping term \begin{align*} u_{tt} - Δu + c(t,x) u_t = |u|^p, \quad (t,x)\in (0,\infty)\times \mathbb{R}^N,\quad u(0,x) = \varepsilon u_0(x), \ u_t(0,x) = \varepsilon u_1(x), \quad x\in \mathbb{R}^N, \end{align*} where $p>1$ and the coefficient of the damping term has the form \begin{align*} c(t,x) = a_0 (1+|x|^2)^{-α/2} (1+t)^{-β} \end{align*} with some $a_0 > 0$, $α< 0$, $β\in (-1, 1]$. In particular, we mainly consider the cases $ α< 0, β=0$ or $α< 0, β= 1$, which imply $α+ β< 1$, namely, the damping is spatially increasing and effective. Our aim is to prove that the critical exponent is given by $ p = 1+ \frac{2}{N-α}$. This shows that the critical exponent is the same as that of the corresponding parabolic equation $c(t,x) v_t - Δv = |v|^p$. The global existence part is proved by a weighted energy estimates with an exponential-type weight function and a special case of the Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg inequality. The blow-up part is proved by a test-function method introduced by Ikeda and Sobajima (arXiv:1710.06780v1). We also give an upper estimate of the lifespan.

Test function method for blow-up phenomena of semilinear wave equations and their weakly coupled systems

In this paper we consider the wave equations with power type nonlinearities including time-derivatives of unknown functions and their weakly coupled systems. We propose a framework of test function method and give a simple proof of the derivation of sharp upper bound of lifespan of solutions to nonlinear wave equations and their systems. We point out that for respective critical case, we use a family of self-similar solution to the standard wave equation including Gauss's hypergeometric functions which are originally introduced by Zhou (1992). However, our framework is much simpler than that. As a consequence, we found new $(p,q)$-curve for the system $\partial_t^2u-Δu=|v|^q$, $\partial_t^2v-Δv=|\partial_tu|^p$ and lifespan estimate for small solutions for new region.

Upper bound for lifespan of solutions to certain semilinear parabolic, dispersive and hyperbolic equations via a unified test function method

This paper is concerned with the blowup phenomena for initial-boundary value problem for certain semi linear parabolic, dispersive and hyperbolic equations in cone-like domain. The result proposes a unified treatment of estimates for lifespan of solutions to the problem by test function method. The Fujita exponent p=1 + 2/N appears as a threshold of blowup phenomena for small data when $C_{Σ}=R^N$ , but the case of cone-like domain with boundary the threshold changes and explicitly given via the first eigenvalue of corresponding Laplace-Beltrami operator with Dirichlet boundary condition as in Levine-Meier in 1989.

Remark on upper bound for lifespan of solutions to semilinear evolution equations in a two-dimensional exterior domain

In this paper we consider the initial-boundary value problem for the heat, damped wave, complex-Ginzburg-Landau and Schr"odinger equations with the power type nonlinearity $|u|^p$ with $p in (1,2]$ in a two-dimensional exterior domain. Remark that $2=1+2/N$ is well-known as the Fujita exponent. If $p>2$, then there exists a small global-in-time solution of the damped wave equation for some initial data small enough (see Ikehata'05), and if $p<2$, then global-in-time solutions cannot exist for any positive initial data (see Ogawa-Takeda'09 and Lai-Yin'17). The result is that for given initial data $(f,tau g)in H^1_0(Omega)times L^2(Omega)$ satisfying $(f+tau g)log |x|in L^1(Omega)$ with some requirement, the solution blows up at finite time, and moreover, the upper bound for lifespan of solutions to the problem is given as the following {it double exponential type} when $p=2$: [ lifespan(u) leq exp[exp(Cep^{-1})] . ] The crucial idea is to use test functions which approximates the harmonic function $log |x|$ satisfying Dirichlet boundary condition and the technique for derivation of lifespan estimate in Ikeda-Sobajima(arXiv:1710.06780).

Life-span of blowup solutions to semilinear wave equation with space-dependent critical damping

This paper is concerned with the blowup phenomena for initial value problem of semilinear wave equation with critical space-dependent damping term (DW:$V$). The main result of the present paper is to give a solution of the problem and to provide a sharp estimate for lifespan for such a solution when $\frac{N}{N-1}<p\leq p_S(N+V_0)$, where $p_S(N)$ is the Strauss exponent for (DW:$0$). The main idea of the proof is due to the technique of test functions for (DW:$0$) originated by Zhou--Han (2014, MR3169791). Moreover, we find a new threshold value $V_0=\frac{(N-1)^2}{N+1}$ for the coefficient of critical and singular damping $|x|^{-1}$.

Life-span of solutions to semilinear wave equation with time-dependent critical damping for specially localized initial data

This paper is concerned with the blowup phenomena for initial value problem of semilinear wave equation with critical time-dependent damping term (DW). The result is the sharp upper bound of lifespan of solution with respect to the small parameter $\ep$ when $p_F(N)\leq p\leq p_0(N+μ)$, where $p_F(N)$ denotes the Fujita exponent for the nonlinear heat equations and $p_0(n)$ denotes the Strauss exponent for nonlinear wave equation in $n$-dimension with $μ=0$. Consequently, by connecting the result of D'Abbicco--Lucente--Reissig 2015, our result clarifies the threshold exponent $p_0(N+μ)$ for dividing blowup phenomena and global existence of small solutions when $N=3$. The crucial idea is to construct suitable test functions satisfying the conjugate linear equation $\pa_t^2Φ-ΔΦ-\pa_t(\fracμ{1+t}Φ)=0$ of (DW) including the Gauss hypergeometric functions; note that the construction of test functions is different from Zhou--Han in 2014.

Weighted energy estimates for wave equation with space-dependent damping term for slowly decaying initial data

This paper is concerned with weighted energy estimates for solutions to wave equation $\partial_t^2u-Δu + a(x)\partial_tu=0$ with space-dependent damping term $a(x)=|x|^{-α}$ $(α\in [0,1))$ in an exterior domain $Ω$ having a smooth boundary. The main result asserts that the weighted energy estimates with weight function like polymonials are given and these decay rate are almost sharp, even when the initial data do not have compact support in $Ω$. The crucial idea is to use special solution of $\partial_t u=|x|^αΔu$ including Kummer's confluent hypergeometric functions.

Diffusion phenomena for the wave equation with space-dependent damping term growing at infinity

In this paper, we study the asymptotic behavior of solutions to the wave equation with damping depending on the space variable and growing at the spatial infinity. We prove that the solution is approximated by that of the corresponding heat equation as time tends to infinity. The proof is based on semigroup estimates for the corresponding heat equation and weighted energy estimates for the damped wave equation. To construct a suitable weight function for the energy estimates, we study a certain elliptic problem.

Remarks on an elliptic problem arising in weighted energy estimates for wave equations with space-dependent damping term in an exterior domain

This paper is concerned with weighted energy estimates and diffusion phenomena for the initial-boundary problem of the wave equation with space-dependent damping term in an exterior domain. In this analysis, an elliptic problem was introduced by Todorova and Yordanov. This attempt was quite useful when the coefficient of the damping term is radially symmetric. In this paper, by modifying their elliptic problem, we establish weighted energy estimates and diffusion phenomena even when the coefficient of the damping term is not radially symmetric.

Diffusion phenomena for the wave equation with space-dependent damping in an exterior domain

In this paper, we consider the asymptotic behavior of solutions to the wave equation with space-dependent damping in an exterior domain. We prove that when the damping is effective, the solution is approximated by that of the corresponding heat equation as time tends to infinity. Our proof is based on semigroup estimates for the corresponding heat equation and weighted energy estimates for the damped wave equation. The optimality of the decay late for solutions is also established.

Landau-Lifshitz's conjecture about the motion of a quantum mechanical particle under the inverse square potential

Landau and Lifshitz [4, Section 35] conjectured that for an arbitrary $k\in \mathbb{R}$, there exists the motion of a quantum mechanical particle under the inverse square potential $k|x|^{-2}$, $x \in \mathbb{R}^3$. When $k$ is negative and $| k |$ is very large, the inverse square potential becomes very deep and generates the very strong attractive force, and hence a quantum mechanical particle is likely to fall down to the origin (the center of the inverse square potential). Therefore this conjecture (Landau-Lifshitz's conjecture) seems to be wrong at first sight. We however prove Landau-Lifshitz's conjecture by showing that there exists a selfadjoint extension for the Schrödinger operator with the inverse square potential $-Δ+k|x|^{-2}$ in $\mathbb{R}^N\ (N\geq 2)$ and that the spectrum of the selfadjoint extension is bounded below for an arbitrary $k\in \mathbb{R}$. We thus give the affirmative and complete answer to Landau-Lifshitz's conjecture in $\mathbb{R}^N\ (N\geq 2)$.
