Privacy-Preserving RAG by Concealing Sensitive Information from External LLMs

Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) is widely used to improve the performance of Large Language Models (LLMs) in answering user queries. Existing privacy research on RAG has focused on preventing unauthorized users from accessing sensitive data. However, another important problem that is often overlooked in RAG privacy research is that external generators have access to the query and the retrieved documents, which may contain confidential information that could potentially be misused or accessed for unintended purposes. In this paper, we introduce the Sensitive Entity Alias Generator (SEAG), a privacy-preserving framework that empowers users to utilize powerful third-party generators without disclosing sensitive information. SEAG introduces a lightweight model that locates sensitive entities, generates corresponding aliases, and constructs an entity replacement table. The table is used to replace sensitive words in the user's query and in the retrieved documents before they are forwarded to an external generator. For this purpose, two datasets were constructed: one for fine-tuning SEAG models to generate entity replacement tables, and another for evaluating the entire SEAG framework. The experimental results demonstrate the success of the SEAG framework. As for the User metric, which measures the ability of the model to provide a correct response to the user while hiding sensitive information from the external generator, all SEAG models achieved over 80% accuracy. Additional analysis further evaluated the ability of SEAG models Qwen-3, LLaMA-3.2, and Phi-4 to hide all sensitive entities within given documents. The results show good performance with total accuracies of 77.83%, 76.73%, and 74.91%, respectively.

AI Text Detectors and the Misclassification of Slightly Polished Arabic Text

Many AI detection models have been developed to counter the presence of articles created by artificial intelligence (AI). However, if a human-authored article is slightly polished by AI, a shift will occur in the borderline decision of these AI detection models, leading them to consider it as AI-generated article. This misclassification may result in falsely accusing authors of AI plagiarism and harm the credibility of AI detectors. In English, some efforts were made to meet this challenge, but not in Arabic. In this paper, we generated two datasets. The first dataset contains 800 Arabic articles, half AI-generated and half human-authored. We used it to evaluate 14 Large Language models (LLMs) and commercial AI detectors to assess their ability in distinguishing between human-authored and AI-generated articles. The best 8 models were chosen to act as detectors for our primary concern, which is whether they would consider slightly polished human-authored text as AI-generated. The second dataset, Ar-APT, contains 400 Arabic human-authored articles polished by 10 LLMs using 4 polishing settings, totaling 16400 samples. We use it to evaluate the 8 nominated models and determine whether slight polishing will affect their performance. The results reveal that all AI detectors incorrectly attribute a significant number of articles to AI. The best performing LLM, Claude-4 Sonnet, achieved 83.51\%, its performance decreased to 57.63\% for articles slightly polished by LLaMA-3. Whereas the best performing commercial model, originality.AI, achieves 92\% accuracy, dropped to 12\% for articles slightly polished by Mistral or Gemma-3.

An Overview of Phishing Victimization: Human Factors, Training and the Role of Emotions

Phishing is a form of cybercrime and a threat that allows criminals, phishers, to deceive end users in order to steal their confidential and sensitive information. Attackers usually attempt to manipulate the psychology and emotions of victims. The increasing threat of phishing has made its study worthwhile and much research has been conducted into the issue. This paper explores the emotional factors that have been reported in previous studies to be significant in phishing victimization. In addition, we compare what security organizations and researchers have highlighted in terms of phishing types and categories as well as training in tackling the problem, in a literature review which takes into account all major credible and published sources.
