Minimal Shortfall Strategies for Liquidation of a Basket of Stocks using Reinforcement Learning

This paper studies the ubiquitous problem of liquidating large quantities of highly correlated stocks, a task frequently encountered by institutional investors and proprietary trading firms. Traditional methods in this setting suffer from the curse of dimensionality, making them impractical for high-dimensional problems. In this work, we propose a novel method based on stochastic optimal control to optimally tackle this complex multidimensional problem. The proposed method minimizes the overall execution shortfall of highly correlated stocks using a reinforcement learning approach. We rigorously establish the convergence of our optimal trading strategy and present an implementation of our algorithm using intra-day market data.

Explicit Solutions for Optimal Resource Extraction Problems under Regime Switching Lévy Models

This paper studies the problem of optimally extracting nonrenewable natural resources. Taking into account the fact that the market values of the main natural resources i.e. oil, natural gas, copper,..., etc, fluctuate randomly following global and seasonal macroeconomic parameters, the prices of natural resources are modeled using Markov switching Lévy processes. We formulate this optimal extraction problem as an infinite-time horizon optimal control problem. We derive closed-form solutions for the value function as well as the optimal extraction policy. Numerical examples are presented to illustrate these results.

Optimal Oil Production and Taxation in Presence of Global Disruptions

This paper studies the optimal extraction policy of an oil field as well as the efficient taxation of the revenues generated. Taking into account the fact that the oil price in worldwide commodity markets fluctuates randomly following global and seasonal macroeconomic parameters, we model the evolution of the oil price as a mean reverting regime-switching jump diffusion process. Given that oil producing countries rely on oil sale revenues as well as taxes levied on oil companies for a good portion of the revenue side of their budgets, we formulate this problem as a differential game where the two players are the mining company whose aim is to maximize the revenues generated from its extracting activities and the government agency in charge of regulating and taxing natural resources. We prove the existence of a Nash equilibrium and the convergence of an approximating scheme for the value functions. Furthermore, optimal extraction and fiscal policies that should be applied when the equilibrium is reached are derived.A numerical example is presented to illustrate these results.

Optimal Resource Extraction in Regime Switching Lévy Markets

This paper studies the problem of optimally extracting nonrenewable natural resource in light of various financial and economic restrictions and constraints. Taking into account the fact that the market values of the main natural resources i.e. oil, natural gas, copper,...,etc, fluctuate randomly following global and seasonal macroeconomic parameters, these values are modeled using Markov switching Lévy processes. We formulate this problem as finite-time horizon combined optimal stopping and optimal control problem. We prove that the value function is the unique viscosity solution of the corresponding Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equations. Moreover, we prove the convergence of a finite difference approximation of the value function. Numerical examples are presented to illustrate these results.

Optimal Oil Production under Mean Reverting Lévy Models with Regime Switching

This paper is concerned with the problem of finding the optimal of extraction policies of an oil field in light of various financial and economical restrictions and constraints. Taking into account the fact that the oil price in worldwide commodity markets fluctuates randomly following global and seasonal macro-economic parameters, we model the evolution of the oil price as a mean reverting regime switching jump diffusion process. We formulate this problem as finite-time horizon optimal control problem. We solve the control problem using the method of viscosity solutions. Moreover, we construct and prove the convergence of a numerical scheme for approximating the optimal reward function and the optimal extraction policy. A numerical example that illustrates these results is presented.

Optimal Extraction and Taxation of Strategic Natural Resources: A Differential Game Approach

This paper studies the optimal extraction and taxation of nonrenewable natural resources. It is well known that the market values of the main strategic resources such as oil, natural gas, uranium, copper,..., etc, fluctuate randomly following global and seasonal macroeconomic parameters, these values are modeled using Markov switching L\'evy processes. We formulate this problem as a differential game. The two players of this differential game are the mining company whose aim is to maximize the revenues generated from its extracting activities and the government agency in charge of regulating and taxing natural resources. We prove the existence of a Nash equilibrium. The corresponding Hamilton Jacobi Isaacs equations are completely solved and the value functions as well as the optimal extraction and taxation rates are derived in closed-form. A Numerical example is presented to illustrate our findings.
