Azimuthal decorrelations between QCD jets at all orders

A quantity that promises to reveal important information on perturbative and non-perturbative QCD dynamics is the azimuthal decorrelation between jets in different hard processes. In order to access this information fixed-order NLO predictions need to be supplemented by resummation of logarithmic terms which are large in the region where the jets are nearly back-to-back in azimuth. In the present letter we carry out this resummation to next-to--leading logarithmic accuracy explaining the important role played by the recombination scheme in general resummations for such jet observables.

Non-perturbative QCD effects in jets at hadron colliders

We discuss non-perturbative QCD contributions to jet observables, computing their dependence on the jet radius R, and on the colour and transverse momentum of the parton initiating the jet. We show, using analytic QCD models of power corrections as well as Monte Carlo simulations, that hadronisation corrections grow at small values of R, behaving as 1/R, while underlying event contributions grow with the jet area as R^2. We highlight the connection between hadronisation corrections to jets and those for event shapes in e^+e^- and DIS; we note the limited dependence of our results on the choice of jet algorithm; finally, we propose several measurements in the context of which to test or implement our predictions. The results presented here reinforce the motivation for the use of a range of R values, as well as a plurality of infrared-safe jet algorithms, in precision jet studies at hadron colliders.

Aspects of power corrections in hadron-hadron collisions

The program of understanding inverse-power law corrections to event shapes and energy flow observables in e+ e- annihilation to two jets and DIS (1+1) jets has been a significant success of QCD phenomenology over the last decade. The important extension of this program to similar observables in hadron collisions is not straightforward, being obscured by both conceptual and technical issues. In this paper we shed light on some of these issues by providing an estimate of power corrections to the inter-jet E_t flow distribution in hadron collisions using the techniques that were employed in the e+ e- annihilation and DIS cases.

Power corrections for jets at hadron colliders

We discuss non-perturbative QCD corrections to jet distributions in hadron collisions, focussing on hadronisation and underlying event contributions. Using soft gluon resummation and Monte-Carlo modelling we show that hadronisation dominates at small values of the jet radius R, behaving as 1/R, while underlying event corrections grow with the jet area. This provides a handle to disentangle them and parametrize them in terms of measurable QCD parameters, which might enjoy a degree of universality.

Parton shower Monte Carlos vs resummed calculations for interjet energy flow observables

Parton showers in Monte Carlo event generators reflect to a certain accuracy our understanding of QCD radiation at all orders. For observables sensitive to interjet energy flow in well defined regions of phase space, it has been known for some time that relevant all-order dynamics is substantially more complicated than that encoded via angular ordering in parton shower algorithms, even to leading logarithmic accuracy. Here we investigate the extent of the numerical mismatch between leading logarithmic analytical estimates (resummation) and parton showers in an effort to better understand the accuracy of parton showers for such observables.

Angular ordering and parton showers for non-global QCD observables

We study the mismatch between a full calculation of non-global single-logarithms in the large-N_c limit and an approximation based on free azimuthal averaging, and the consequent angular-ordered pattern of soft gluon radiation in QCD. We compare the results obtained in either case to those obtained from the parton showers in the Monte Carlo event generators HERWIG and PYTHIA, with the aim of assessing the accuracy of the parton showers with regard to such observables where angular ordering is merely an approximation even at leading-logarithmic accuracy and which are commonly employed for the tuning of event generators to data.

On QCD resummation with kt clustering

We revisit the impact of the jet algorithm on predictions of energy flow into gaps between hard jets, defined using the kt clustering procedure. The resulting prediction has two distinct components: a primary emission piece that is related to independent emission of soft gluons by the hard jets and a correlated emission (non-global) piece known only in the large N_c limit. We analytically compute the dependence of the primary emission term on the jet algorithm, which gives significantly more insight than our previous numerical study of the same. We also point out that the non-global component of the answer is reduced even more significantly by the clustering than suggested previously in the literature. Lastly we provide improved predictions for the latest ZEUS photoproduction data, assessing the impact of our latest findings.

The Qt distribution of the Breit current hemisphere in DIS as a probe of small-x broadening effects

We study the distribution 1/sigma dsigma/dQt, where Qt is the modulus of the transverse momentum vector, obtained by summing over all hadrons, in the current hemisphere of the DIS Breit frame. We resum the large logarithms in the small Qt region, to next-to--leading logarithmic accuracy, including the non-global logarithms involved. We point out that this observable is simply related to the Drell-Yan vector boson and predicted Higgs Qt spectra at hadron colliders. Comparing our predictions to existing HERA data thus ought to be a valuable source of information on the role or absence of small-x (BFKL) effects, neglected in conventional resummations of such quantities.

Dijet rates with symmetric E_t cuts

We consider dijet production in the region where symmetric cuts on the transverse energy, $E_t$, are applied to the jets. In this region next-to--leading order calculations are unreliable and an all-order resummation of soft gluon effects is needed, which we carry out. Although, for illustrative purposes, we choose dijets produced in deep inelastic scattering, our general ideas apply additionally to dijets produced in photoproduction or $γγ$ processes and should be relevant also to the study of prompt di-photon $E_t$ spectra in association with a recoiling jet, in hadron-hadron processes

Status of resummed predictions for QCD final state observables

We provide a brief review of the current status of resummed predictions for QCD final state observables such as event shapes and jet rates in a variety of different hard processes. Particular emphasis is given to more recent developments such as the study of non global observables, development of generalized resummation formulae and resummations for new types of event shape variables.

On deglobalization in QCD

The recent discovery and resummation of a class of single-logarithmic effects (non-global logs), has a significant impact on several QCD observables ranging from the classic Sterman-Weinberg jet definition to currently studied event shapes and rapidity gap observables. The discovery of the above effects overturns, for example, the common wisdom that hadronic energy flow in limited interjet regions is dictated primarily by the colour flow in the underlying hard partonic subprocess. We discuss some features of non-global logs and the rapid progress being made in estimating and controlling such corrections.

Resummed event-shape variables in DIS

We complete our study of resummed event-shape distributions in DIS by presenting results for the class of observables that includes the current jet mass, the C-parameter and the thrust with respect to the current-hemisphere thrust axis. We then compare our results to data for all observables for which data exist, fitting for alpha_s and testing the universality of non-perturbative 1/Q effects. A number of technical issues arise, including the extension of the concept of non-globalness to the case of discontinuous globalness; singularities and non-convergence of distributions other than in the Born limit; methods to speed up fixed-order Monte Carlo programs by up to an order of magnitude, relevant when dealing with many x and Q points; and the estimation of uncertainties on the predictions.

Accounting for coherence in interjet E_t flow: a case study

Recently, interest has developed in the distribution of interjet energy flows, with for example the leading-log calculation of the highly non-trivial colour structure of primary emissions in 4-jet systems. Here we point out however that at leading-log level it is insufficient to consider only multiple primary emission from the underlying hard antenna -- additionally, one must take into account the coherent structure of emission from arbitrarily complicated ensembles of large-angle soft gluons. Similar considerations apply to certain definitions of rapidity gaps based on energy flow. We examine this new class of terms in the simpler context of 2-jet events, and discover features that point at novel aspects of the QCD dynamics.

Resummed event shape spectra in DIS

Resummed results are discussed for DIS event shape variable distributions involving the thrust defined using the thrust axis of the current hemisphere, the C parameter and the jet mass. The resummation of these variables requires the development of some techniques different to those applied before for the resummation of DIS event shapes. Including power corrections and matching a comparison with H1 data is presented.

Two-loop enhancement factor for 1/Q corrections to event shapes in deep inelastic scattering

We compute the two-loop enhancement factors for our earlier one-loop calculations of leading (1/Q) power corrections to the mean values of some event shape variables in deep inelastic lepton scattering. The enhancement is found to be equal to the universal ``Milan factor'' for those shape variables considered, provided the one-loop calculation is performed in a particular way. As a result, the phenomenology of power corrections to DIS event shapes remains largely unaffected.

Soft gluon resummation for shape variable distributions in DIS

We discuss the procedure to resum large logarithms to all orders for DIS event shape variable distributions. Results are described for two variants of the thrust variable, both defined wrt the boson axis in the current hemisphere of the Breit frame, but with different normalisations.
