Active and sterile neutrino phenomenology with $A_4$ based minimal extended seesaw

We study a model of neutrino within the framework of the minimal extended seesaw (MES), which plays an important role in active and sterile neutrino phenomenology in (3+1) scheme. The $A_4$ flavor symmetry is augmented by an additional $Z_4\times Z_3$ symmetry to constraint the Yukawa Lagrangian of the model. We use non-trivial Dirac mass matrix, with broken $μ-τ$ symmetry, as the origin of leptonic mixing. Interestingly, such a structure of mixing naturally leads to the non-zero reactor mixing angle $θ_{13}$. Non-degenerate mass structure for right-handed neutrino $M_R$ is considered so that we can further extend our study to Leptogenesis. We have also considered three different cases for sterile neutrino mass, $M_S$ to check the viability of this model, within the allowed $3σ$ bound in this MES framework.

Phenomenology of two texture zero neutrino mass in left-right symmetric model with $Z_8 \times Z_2$

We have done a phenomenological study on the neutrino mass matrix $M_ν$ favoring two zero texture in the framework of left-right symmetric model (LRSM) where type I and type II seesaw naturally occurs. The type I seesaw mass term is considered to be following a trimaximal mixing (TM) pattern. The symmetry realizations of these texture zero structures has been realized using the discrete cyclic abelian $Z8\times Z2$ group in LRSM. We have studied six of the popular texture zero classes named as A1, A2, B1, B2, B3 and B4 favoured by neutrino oscillation data in our analysis. We basically focused on the implications of these texture zero mass matrices in low energy phenomenon like neutrinoless double beta decay (NDBD) and lepton flavour violation (LFV) in LRSM scenario. For NDBD, we have considered only the dominant new physics contribution coming from the diagrams containing purely RH current and another from the charged Higgs scalar while ignoring the contributions coming from the left-right gauge boson mixing and heavy light neutrino mixing. The mass of the extra gauge bosons and scalars has been considered to be of the order of TeV scale which is accessible at the colliders.

Common Origin of Non-zero $θ_{13}$ and Baryon Asymmetry of the Universe in a TeV scale Seesaw Model with $A_4$ Flavour Symmetry

We study the possibility of generating non-zero reactor mixing angle $θ_{13}$ and baryon asymmetry of the Universe within the framework of an $A_4$ flavour symmetric model. Using the conventional type I seesaw mechanism we construct the Dirac and Majorana mass matrices which give rise to the correct light neutrino mass matrix. Keeping the right handed neutrino mass matrix structure trivial so that it gives rise to a (quasi) degenerate spectrum of heavy neutrinos suitable for resonant leptogenesis at TeV scale, we generate the non-trivial structure of Dirac neutrino mass matrix that can lead to the light neutrino mixing through type I seesaw formula. Interestingly, such a setup naturally leads to non-zero $θ_{13}$ due to the existence of anti-symmetric contraction of the product of two triplet representations of $A_4$. Such antisymmetric part of triplet products usually vanish for right handed neutrino Majorana mass terms, leading to $μ-τ$ symmetric scenarios in the most economical setups. We constrain the model parameters from the requirement of producing the correct neutrino data as well as baryon asymmetry of the Universe for right handed neutrino mass scale around TeV. The $A_4$ symmetry is augmented by additional $Z_3 \times Z_2$ symmetry to make sure that the splitting between right handed neutrinos required for resonant leptogenesis is generated only by next to leading order terms, making it naturally small. We find that the inverted hierarchical light neutrino masses give more allowed parameter space consistent with neutrino and baryon asymmetry data.

Normal hierarchy neutrino mass model revisited with leptogenesis

We have studied the scenario of baryogenesis via leptogenesis in an $A_4$ flavor symmetric framework considering type I seesaw as the origin of neutrino mass. Because of the presence of the fifth generation right handed neutrino the model naturally generates non-zero reactor mixing angle. We have considered two vev alignments for the extra flavon $η$ and studied the consequences in detail. As a whole the additional flavon along with the extra right handed neutrinos allow us to study thermal leptogenesis by the decay of the lightest right handed neutrino present in the model. We have computed the matter-antimatter asymmetry for both flavor dependent and flavor independent leptogenesis by considering a considerably wider range of right handed neutrino mass. Finally, we correlate the baryon asymmetry of the universe (BAU) with the model parameters and light neutrino masses.

Perturbations to $μ-τ$ symmetry, lepton Number Violation and baryogenesis in left-right symmetric Model

In this work, we studied baryogenesis via leptogenesis, neutrinoless double beta decay (NDBD) in the framework of LRSM where type I and type II seesaw terms arises naturally. The type I seesaw mass term is considered to be favouring $μ-τ$ symmetry, taking into account the widely studied realizations of $μ-τ$ symmetric neutrino mass models, viz. Tribimaximal Mixing (TBM), Hexagonal Mixing (HM) and Golden Ratio Mixing (GRM) respectively. The required correction to generate a non vanishing reactor mixing angle $θ_{13}$ is obtained from the perturbation matrix, type II seesaw mass term in our case. We studied the new physics contributions to NDBD and baryogenesis ignoring the left-right gauge boson mixing and the heavy-light neutrino mixing, keeping mass of the gauge bosons and scalars to be around TeV and studied the effects of the new physics contributions on the effective mass, NDBD half life and cosmological BAU and compared with the values imposed by experiments. We basically tried to find the leading order contributions to NDBD and BAU, coming from type I or type II seesaw in our work.

Lepton Number Violation, Lepton Flavour Violation and Baryogenesis in Left-Right Symmetric Model

We did a model independent phenomenological study of baryogenesis via leptogenesis, neutrinoless double beta decay (NDBD) and charged lepton flavour violation (CLFV) in a generic left-right symmetric model (LRSM) where neutrino mass originates from the type I + type II seesaw mechanism. We studied the new physics contributions to NDBD coming from the left-right gauge boson mixing and the heavy neutrino contribution within the framework of LRSM. We have considered the mass of the RH gauge boson to be specifically 5 TeV, 10 TeV and 18 TeV and studied the effects of the new physics contributions on the effective mass and baryogenesis and compared with the current experimental limit. We tried to correlate the cosmological BAU from resonant leptogenesis with the low energy observables, notably, NDBD and LFV with a view to finding a common parameter space where they coexists.

Neutrinoless double beta decay and lepton flavour violation in broken $μ-τ$ symmetric neutrino mass models

We have studied neutrinoless double beta decay and charged lepton flavour violation in broken $μ-τ$ symmetric neutrino masses in a generic left-right symmetric model (LRSM). The leading order $μ-τ$ symmetric mass matrix originates from the type I (II) seesaw mechanism, whereas the perturbations to $μ-τ$ symmetry in order for generation of non-zero reactor mixing angle $θ_{13}$, as required by latest neutrino oscillation data, originates from the type II (I) seesaw mechanism. In our work, we considered four different realizations of $μ-τ$ symmetry, viz. Tribimaximal Mixing (TBM), Bimaximal Mixing (BM), Hexagonal Mixing (HM) and Golden Ratio Mixing (GRM). We then studied the new physics contributions to neutrinoless double beta decay (NDBD) ignoring the left-right gauge boson mixing and the heavy-light neutrino mixing within the framework of LRSM. We have considered the mass of the gauge bosons and scalars to be around TeV and studied the effects of the new physics contributions on the effective mass and the NDBD half life and compared with the current experimental limit imposed by KamLAND-Zen. We further extended our analysis by correlating the lepton flavour violation of the decay processes, $\left(μ\rightarrow 3e\right)$ and $\left(μ\rightarrow eγ\right)$ with the lightest neutrino mass and atmospheric mixing angle $θ_{23}$ respectively.

Common Origin of Non-zero $θ_{13}$ and Dark Matter in an $S_4$ Flavour Symmetric Model with Inverse Seesaw

We study an inverse seesaw model of neutrino mass within the framework of $S_4$ flavour symmetry from the requirement of generating non-zero reactor mixing angle $θ_{13}$ along with correct dark matter relic abundance. The leading order $S_4$ model gives rise to tri-bimaximal type leptonic mixing resulting in $θ_{13}=0$. Non-zero $θ_{13}$ is generated at one loop level by extending the model with additional scalar and fermion fields which take part in the loop correction. The particles going inside the loop are odd under an in-built $Z^{\text{Dark}}_2$ symmetry such that the lightest $Z^{\text{Dark}}_2$ odd particle can be a dark matter candidate. Correct neutrino and dark matter phenomenology can be achieved for such one loop corrections either to the light neutrino mass matrix or to the charged lepton mass matrix although the latter case is found to be more predictive. The predictions for neutrinoless double beta decay is also discussed and inverted hierarchy in the charged lepton correction case is found to be disfavoured by the latest KamLAND-Zen data.

Neutrino phenomenology and scalar Dark Matter with $A_{4}$ flavor symmetry in Inverse and type II seesaw

We present a TeV scale seesaw mechanism for exploring the dark matter and neutrino phenomenology in the light of recent neutrino and cosmology data. A different realization of the Inverse seesaw(ISS) mechanism with $A_{4}$ flavor symmetry is being implemented as a leading contribution to the light neutrino mass matrix which usually gives rise to vanishing reactor mixing angle $θ_{13}$. Using a non-diagonal form of Dirac neutrino mass matrix and $3σ$ values of mass square differences we parameterize the neutrino mass matrix in terms of Dirac Yukawa coupling "$y$". We then use type II seesaw as a perturbation which turns out to be active to have a non-vanishing reactor mixing angle without much disturbing the other neutrino oscillation parameters. Then we constrain a common parameter space satisfying the non-zero $θ_{13}$, Yukawa coupling and the relic abundance of dark matter. Contributions of neutrinoless double beta decay are also included for standard as well as non-standard interaction. This study may have relevance in future neutrino and Dark Matter experiments.

Discriminating Majorana Neutrino Textures in the light of Baryon Asymmetry

We study all possible texture zeros in the Majorana neutrino mass matrix which are allowed from neutrino oscillation as well as cosmology data when the charged lepton mass matrix is assumed to take the diagonal form. In case of one-zero texture, we write down the Majorana phases which are assumed to be equal and the lightest neutrino mass as a function of the Dirac CP phase. In case of two-zero texture, we numerically evaluate all the three CP phases and lightest neutrino mass by solving four real constraint equations. We then constrain texture zero mass matrices from the requirement of producing correct baryon asymmetry through the mechanism of leptogenesis. Adopting a type I seesaw framework, we consider the CP violating out of equilibrium decay of the lightest right handed neutrino as the source of lepton asymmetry. Apart from discriminating between the texture zero mass matrices and light neutrino mass hierarchy, we also constrain the Dirac and Majorana CP phases so that the observed baryon asymmetry can be produced. In two-zero texture, we further constrain the diagonal form of Dirac neutrino mass matrix from the requirement of producing correct baryon asymmetry.

Corrections to Scaling Neutrino Mixing: Non-zero $θ_{13}, δ_{CP}$ and Baryon Asymmetry

We study a very specific type of neutrino mass and mixing structure based on the idea of Strong Scaling Ansatz (SSA) where the ratios of neutrino mass matrix elements belonging to two different columns are equal. There are three such possibilities, all of which are disfavored by the latest neutrino oscillation data. We focus on the specific scenario which predicts vanishing reactor mixing angle $θ_{13}$ and inverted hierarchy with vanishing lightest neutrino mass. Motivated by several recent attempts to explain non-zero $θ_{13}$ by incorporating corrections to a leading order neutrino mass or mixing matrix giving $θ_{13}=0$, here we study the origin of non-zero $θ_{13}$ as well as leptonic Dirac CP phase $δ_{CP}$ by incorporating two different corrections to scaling neutrino mass and mixing: one where type II seesaw acts as a correction to scaling neutrino mass matrix and the other with charged lepton correction to scaling neutrino mixing. Although scaling neutrino mass matrix originating from type I seesaw predicts inverted hierarchy, the total neutrino mass matrix after type II seesaw correction can give rise to either normal or inverted hierarchy. However, charged lepton corrections do not disturb the inverted hierarchy prediction of scaling neutrino mass matrix. We further discriminate between neutrino hierarchies, different choices of lightest neutrino mass and Dirac CP phase by calculating baryon asymmetry and comparing with the observations made by the Planck experiment.

Perturbations to $μ-τ$ Symmetry, Leptogenesis and Lepton Flavour Violation with Type II Seesaw

We study the possibility of generating non-zero reactor mixing angle $θ_{13}$ by perturbing the $μ-τ$ symmetric neutrino mass matrix. The leading order $μ-τ$ symmetric neutrino mass matrix originates from type I seesaw mechanism whereas the perturbations to $μ-τ$ symmetry originate from type II seesaw term. We consider four different realizations of $μ-τ$ symmetry: Bimaximal Mixing(BM), Tri-bimaximal Mixing (TBM), Hexagonal Mixing (HM) and Golden Ratio Mixing (GRM) all giving rise to $θ_{13} = 0, θ_{23} = \fracπ{4}$ but different non-zero values of solar mixing angle $θ_{12}$. We assume a minimal $μ-τ$ symmetry breaking type II seesaw mass matrix as a perturbation and calculate the neutrino oscillation parameters as a function of type II seesaw strength. We then consider the origin of non-trivial leptonic CP phase in the charged lepton sector and calculate the lepton asymmetry arising from the lightest right handed neutrino decay by incorporating the presence of both type I and type II seesaw. We constrain the type II seesaw strength as well as leptonic CP phase (and hence the charged lepton sector) by comparing our results with experimental neutrino oscillation parameters as well as Planck bound on baryon to photon ratio. Finally, we extend our analysis on lepton flavour violating decays like $μ\to e γ$ and $μ\to eee$ due to exchange of TeV scale Higgs triplet scalar within the low scale type II seesaw framework. The branching ratios for these lepton flavour processes are examined with the small type II perturbation term $ω$ and the estimated values are very close to the experimental bound coming from current search experiments.

Neutrino Masses and Leptogenesis in Type I+II Seesaw Models

The baryon to photon ratio in the present Universe is very accurately measured to be $(6.065 \pm 0.090) \times 10^{-10}$. We study the possible origin of this baryon asymmetry in the neutrino sector through the generic mechanism of baryogenesis through leptogenesis. We consider both type I and type II seesaw origin of neutrino masses within the framework of left right symmetric models (LRSM). Using the latest best fit global neutrino oscillation data of mass squared differences, mixing angles and Dirac CP phase, we compute the predictions for baryon to photon ratio keeping the Majorana CP phases as free parameters for two different choices of lightest neutrino mass eigenvalue for both normal and inverted hierarchical patterns of neutrino masses. We do our calculation with and without lepton flavor effects being taken into account. We choose different diagonal Dirac neutrino mass matrix for different flavor effects in such a way that the lightest right handed neutrino mass is in the appropriate range. We also study the predictions for baryon asymmetry when the neutrino masses arise from a combination of both type I and type II seesaw (with dominating type I term) and discriminate between several combinations of Dirac and Majorana CP phases by demanding successful predictions for baryon asymmetry.

Radiative Generation of Non-zero $θ_{13}$ in MSSM with broken $A_4$ Flavor Symmetry

We study the renormalization group effects on neutrino masses and mixing in Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) by considering a $μ-τ$ symmetric mass matrix at high energy scale giving rise to Tri-Bi-Maximal (TBM) type mixing. We outline a flavor symmetry model based on $A_4$ symmetry giving rise to the desired neutrino mass matrix at high energy scale. We take the three neutrino mass eigenvalues at high energy scale as input parameters and compute the neutrino parameters at low energy by taking into account of renormalization group effects. We observe that the correct output values of neutrino parameters at low energy are obtained only when the input mass eigenvalues are large $|m_{1,2,3}| = 0.08-0.12$ eV with a very mild hierarchy of either inverted or normal type. A large inverted or normal hierarchical pattern of neutrino masses is disfavored within our framework. We also find a preference towards higher values of $\tanβ$, the ratio of vacuum expectation values (vev) of two Higgs doublets in MSSM in order to arrive at the correct low energy output. Such a model predicting large neutrino mass eigenvalues with very mild hierarchy and large $\tanβ$ could have tantalizing signatures at oscillation, neutrino-less double beta decay as well as collider experiments.

Neutrino masses and mixings with non-zero $θ_{13}$ in Type I+II Seesaw Models

We study the survivability of neutrino mass models with normal as well as inverted hierarchical mass patterns in the presence of both type I and type II seesaw contributions to neutrino mass within the framework of generic left-right symmetric models. At leading order, the Dirac neutrino mass matrix is assumed to be diagonal with either charged lepton (CL) type or up quark (UQ) type structure which gets corrected by non-leading effects giving rise to deviations from tri-bi-maximal (TBM) mixing and hence non-zero value of $θ_{13}$. Using the standard form of neutrino mass matrix which incorporates such non-leading effects, we parametrize the neutrino mass matrix incorporating both oscillation as well as cosmology data. Also considering extremal values of Majorana CP phases such that the neutrino mass eigenvalues have the structure $(m_1, -m_2, m_3)$ and $(m_1, m_2, m_3)$, we then calculate the predictions for neutrino parameters in the presence of both type I and type II seesaw contributions, taking one of them dominant and the other sub-dominant. We show that these mass models can survive in our framework with certain exceptions.

Quasi-Degenerate Neutrinos in Type II Seesaw Models

We present an analysis of normal and inverted hierarchical neutrino mass models within the framework of tri-bi-maximal (TBM) mixing. Considering the neutrinos to be quasi-degenerate (QDN), we study two different neutrino mass models with mass eigenvalues $(m_1, -m_2, m_3)$ and $(m_1, m_2, m_3)$ for both normal hierarchical (NH) and inverted hierarchical (IH) cases. Parameterizing the neutrino mass matrix using best fit oscillation and cosmology data for a QDN scenario, we find the right-handed Majorana mass matrix using type I seesaw formula for two types of Dirac neutrino mass matrices: charged lepton (CL) type and up quark (UQ) type. Incorporating the presence of type II seesaw term which arises naturally in generic left-right symmetric models (LRSM) along with type I term, we compare the predictions for neutrino mass parameters with the experimental values. Within such a framework and incorporating both oscillation as well as cosmology data, we show that QDN scenario of neutrino masses can still survive in nature with some minor exceptions. A viable extension of the standard model with an abelian gauged flavor symmetry is briefly discussed which can give rise to the desired structure of the Dirac and Majorana mass matrices.

Numerical consistency check between two approaches to radiative corrections for neutrino masses and mixings

We briefly outline the two popular approaches on radiative corrections to neutrino masses and mixing angles, and then carry out a detailed numerical analysis for a consistency check between them in MSSM. We find that the two approaches are nearly consistent with a small discrepancy of a factor of 13 percent in mass eigenvalues at low energy scale, but the predictions on mixing angles are almost consistent. We check the stability of the three types of neutrino models, i.e., hierarchical, inverted hierarchical and degenerate models, under radiative corrections, using both approaches, and find consistent conclusions. The neutrino mass models which are found to be stable under radiative corrections in MSSM are the normal hierarchical model and the inverted hierarchical model with opposite CP parity. We also carry out numerical analysis on some important conjectures related to radiative corrections in MSSM, viz., radiative magnification of solar and atmospheric mixings in case of nearly degenerate model having same CP parity (MPR conjecture) and radiative generation of solar mass scale in exactly two-fold degenerate model with opposite CP parity and non-zero reactor angle (JM conjecture). We observe certain exceptions to these conjectures. Finally the effect of scale-dependent vacuum expectation value in neutrino mass renormalisation is discussed.

Discriminating neutrino mass models using Type II seesaw formula

In this paper we propose a kind of natural selection which can discriminate the three possible neutrino mass models, namely the degenerate, inverted hierarchical and normal hierarchical models, using the framework of Type II seesaw formula. We arrive at a conclusion that the inverted hierarchical model appears to be most favourable whereas the normal hierarchical model follows next to it. The degenerate model is found to be most unfavourable. We use the hypothesis that those neutrino mass models in which Type I seesaw term dominates over the Type II left-handed Higgs triplet term are favoured to survive in nature.
