Origin of the fundamental plane of elliptical galaxies in the Coma Cluster without fine-tuning

After thirty years of the discovery of the fundamental plane, explanations to the tilt of the fundamental plane with respect to the virial plane still suffer from the need of fine-tuning. In this paper, we try to explore the origin of this tilt from the perspective of modified Newtonian dynamics (MOND) by applying the 16 Coma galaxies available in Thomas et al.[1]. Based on the mass models that can reproduce de Vaucouleurs' law closely, we find that the tilt of the traditional fundamental plane is naturally explained by the simple form of the MONDian interpolating function, if we assume a well motivated choice of anisotropic velocity distribution, and adopt the Kroupa or Salpeter stellar mass-to-light ratio. Our analysis does not necessarily rule out a varying stellar mass-to-light ratio.

Constraining $f(R)$ Gravity Theory Using Weak Lensing Peak Statistics from the Canada-France-Hawaii-Telescope Lensing Survey

In this Letter, we report the observational constraints on the Hu-Sawicki $f(R)$ theory derived from weak lensing peak abundances, which are closely related to the mass function of massive halos. In comparison with studies using optical or x-ray clusters of galaxies, weak lensing peak analyses have the advantages of not relying on mass-baryonic observable calibrations. With observations from the Canada-France-Hawaii-Telescope Lensing Survey, our peak analyses give rise to a tight constraint on the model parameter $|f_{R0}|$ for $n=1$. The $95\%$ CL limit is $\log_{10}|f_{R0}| < -4.82$ given WMAP9 priors on $(Ω_{\rm m}, A_{\rm s})$. With Planck15 priors, the corresponding result is $\log_{10}|f_{R0}| < -5.16$.

Cosmological Perturbations and Quasi-Static Assumption in $f(R)$ Theories

$f(R)$ gravity is one of the simplest theories of modified gravity to explain the accelerated cosmic expansion. Although it is usually assumed that the quasi-Newtonian approach (a combination of the quasi-static approximation and sub-Hubble limit) for cosmic perturbations is good enough to describe the evolution of large scale structure in $f(R)$ models, some studies have suggested that this method is not valid for all $f(R)$ models. Here, we show that in the matter-dominated era, the pressure and shear equations alone, which can be recast into four first-order equations to solve for cosmological perturbations exactly, are sufficient to solve for the Newtonian potential, $Ψ$, and the curvature potential, $Φ$. Based on these two equations, we are able to clarify how the exact linear perturbations fit into different limits. We find that the Compton length controls the quasi-static behaviours in $f(R)$ gravity. In addition, regardless the validity of quasi-static approximation, a strong version of the sub-Hubble limit alone is sufficient to reduce the exact linear perturbations in any viable $f(R)$ gravity to second order. Our findings disagree with some previous studies where we find little difference between our exact and quasi-Newtonian solutions even up to $k=10 c^{-1} \mathcal{H}_0$.

Hubble Constant, Lensing, and Time Delay in Relativistic MOND

Time delay in galaxy gravitational lensing systems has been used to determine the value of Hubble constant. As in other dynamical phenomena at the scale of galaxy, dark matter is often invoked in gravitational lensing to account for the "missing mass" (the apparent discrepancy between the dynamical mass and the luminous mass). Alternatively, modified gravity can be used to explain the discrepancy. In this paper we adopt the Tensor-Vector-Scalar gravity (TeVeS), a relativistic version of MOdified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND), to study gravitational lensing phenomena and derive the formulae needed to evaluate the Hubble constant. We test our method on quasar lensing by elliptical galaxies in the literature. We focus on double-image systems with time delay measurement. Three candidates are suitable for our study: HE 2149-2745, FBQ J0951+2635 and SBS 0909+532. The Hubble constant obtained is consistent with the value used in fitting the CMB result in neutrino cosmological model.

Mass of Galactic Lenses in Modified Newtonian Dynamics

Using strong lensing data Milgrom's MOdified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND) or its covariant TeVeS (Tensor-Vector-Scalar Theory) is being examined here as an alternative to the conventional $Λ$CDM paradigm. We examine 10 double-image gravitational lensing systems, in which the lens masses have been estimated by stellar population synthesis models. While mild deviations exist, we do not find out that strong cases for outliers to the TeVeS theory.

Theoretical Aspects of Gravitational Lensing in TeVeS

Since Bekenstein's (2004) creation of his Tensor-Vector-Scalar theory (TeVeS), the Modified Newtonian dynamics (MOND) paradigm has been redeemed from the embarrassment of lacking a relativistic version. One primary success of TeVeS is that it provides an enhancement of gravitational lensing, which could not be achieved by other MONDian theories. Following Bekenstein's work, we investigate the phenomena of gravitational lensing including deflection angles, lens equations and time delay. We find that the deflection angle would maintain its value while the distance of closest approach vary in the MOND regime, this coincides with the conclusion of Mortlock and Turner's (2001) intuitional approach. Moreover, the scalar field, which is introduced to enhance the deflection angle in TeVeS, contributes a negative effect on the potential time delay. Unfortunately this phenomenon is unmeasurable in lensing systems where we can only observe the time delay between two images for a given source. However, this measurable time delay offers another constraint on the mass ratio of the DM and MOND scenarios, which in general differs from that given by the deflection angle. In other words, for a lensing system, if two masses, m_gN and m_gM, are mutually alternatives for the deflection angles in their own paradigm, regarding the time delay they are in general in an exclusive relation.
