Neutrino Mass Models: circa 2008

We review recent developments in theoretical models for neutrino masses and mixing. Emphases are given to models based on finite group family symmetries. In particular, we describe one recent model based on SU(5), in which both the tri-bimaximal neutrino mixing and realistic CKM matrix are generated. We also discuss two models based on a non-anomalous U(1)_F family symmetry in which the gauge anomalies are cancelled due to the presence of the right-handed neutrinos. In one of these models, the seesaw scale can be as low as a TeV; in the other model, which is based on SUSY SU(5), the U(1)_F symmetry forbids Higgs-mediated proton decays.

Higgs Triplets, Decoupling, and Precision Measurements

Electroweak precision data has been extensively used to constrain models containing physics beyond that of the Standard Model. When the model contains Higgs scalars in representations other than SU(2) singlets or doublets, and hence rho not equal to one at tree level, a correct renormalization scheme requires more inputs than the three needed for the Standard Model. We discuss the connection between the renormalization of models with Higgs triplets and the decoupling properties of the models as the mass scale for the scalar triplet field becomes much larger than the electroweak scale. The requirements of perturbativity of the couplings and agreement with electroweak data place strong restrictions on models with Higgs triplets. Our results have important implications for Little Higgs type models and other models with rho not equal to one at tree level.

Fermion Mass Hierarchy and Proton Stability from Non-anomalous U(1)_F in SUSY SU(5)

We present a realistic supersymmetric SU(5) model combined with a non-anomalous U(1)_F symmetry. We find a set of U(1)_F charges which automatically lead to the realistic mass hierarchy and mixing patterns for quarks, leptons and neutrinos. All gauge anomalies, including the [U(1)_F]^3 anomaly, are cancelled in our model without invoking the Green-Schwarz mechanism or having exotic fields. Proton decay mediated by dimension 5 operators is automatically suppressed in our model, because the scale set by the largest right-handed neutrino mass is much less than the GUT scale.

Lepton Flavor Violation in Predictive Supersymmetric GUT Models

There have been many theoretical models constructed which aim to explain the neutrino masses and mixing patterns. While many of the models will be eliminated once more accurate determinations of the mixing parameters, especially $\sin^2 2θ_{13}$, are obtained, charged lepton flavor violation (LFV) experiments are able to differentiate even further among the models. In this paper, we investigate various rare LFV processes, such as $\ell_{i} \to \ell_{j} + γ$ and $μ-e$ conversion, in five predictive supersymmetric (SUSY) SO(10) models and their allowed soft-SUSY breaking parameter space in the constrained minimal SUSY standard model. Utilizing the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe dark matter constraints, we obtain lower bounds on the branching ratios of these rare processes and find that at least three of the five models we consider give rise to predictions for $μ\to e + γ$ that will be tested by the MEG Collaboration at PSI. In addition, the next generation $μ-e$ conversion experiment has sensitivity to the predictions of all five models, making it an even more robust way to test these models. While generic studies have emphasized the dependence of the branching ratios of these rare processes on the reactor neutrino angle $θ_{13}$ and the mass of the heaviest right-handed neutrino $M_3$, we find very massive $M_3$ is more significant than large $θ_{13}$ in leading to branching ratios near to the present upper limits.

Tri-bimaximal Neutrino Mixing and CKM Matrix in a SU(5)x(d)T Model

In this talk, we present a model based on SU(5)x(d)T which successfully gives rise to near tri-bimaximal leptonic mixing as well as realistic CKM matrix elements for the quarks. The Georgi-Jarlskog relations for three generations are also obtained. Due to the (d)T transformation property of the matter fields, the b-quark mass can be generated only when the (d)T symmetry is broken, giving a dynamical origin for the hierarchy between m_b and m_t. There are only nine operators allowed in the Yukawa sector up to at least mass dimension seven due to an additional Z12 x Z12' symmetry, which also forbids, up to some high orders, operators that lead to proton decay. The resulting model has a total of nine parameters in the charged fermion and neutrino sectors, and hence is very predictive. In addition to the prediction for theta13 ~ theta_c/3sqrt{2}, the model gives rise to a sum rule, tan^2(theta_{solar}) ~ tan^2(theta_{solar,TBM}) - 1/2*theta_c*cos(beta), which is a consequence of the Georgi-Jarlskog relations in the quark sector. This deviation could account for the difference between the experimental best fit value for the solar mixing angle and the value predicted by the tri-bimaximal mixing matrix.

CKM and Tri-bimaximal MNS Matrices in a SU(5) x (d)T Model

We propose a model based on SU(5) x {}^{(d)}T which successfully gives rise to near tri-bimaximal leptonic mixing as well as realistic CKM matrix elements for the quarks. The Georgi-Jarlskog relations for three generations are also obtained. Due to the {}^{(d)}T transformation property of the matter fields, the b-quark mass can be generated only when the {}^{(d)}T symmetry is broken, giving a dynamical origin for the hierarchy between m_{b} and m_{t}. There are only nine operators allowed in the Yukawa sector up to at least mass dimension seven due to an additional Z_{12} x Z'_{12} symmetry, which also forbids, up to some high orders, operators that lead to proton decay. The resulting model has a total of nine parameters in the charged fermion and neutrino sectors, and hence is very predictive. In addition to the prediction for θ_{13} \simeq θ_{c}/3 \sqrt{2}, the model gives rise to a sum rule, \tan^{2}θ_{\odot} \simeq \tan^{2} θ_{\odot, \mathrm{TBM}} - {1/2} θ_{c} \cosβ, which is a consequence of the Georgi-Jarlskog relations in the quark sector. This deviation could account for the difference between the experimental best fit value for the solar mixing angle and the value predicted by the tri-bimaximal mixing matrix.

Models of Neutrino Masses and Mixing

Neutrino physics has entered an era of precision measurements. With these precise measurements, we may be able to distinguish different models that have been constructed to explain the small neutrino masses and the large mixing among them. In this talk, I review some of the existing theoretical models and their predictions for neutrino oscillations.

TASI 2006 Lectures on Leptogenesis

The origin of the asymmetry between matter and anti-matter of the Universe has been one of the great challenges in particle physics and cosmology. Leptogenesis as a mechanism for generating the cosmological baryon asymmetry of the Universe has gained significant interests ever since the advent of the evidence of non-zero neutrino masses. In these lectures presented at TASI 2006, I review various realizations of leptogenesis and allude to recent developments in this subject.

Model Predictions for Neutrino Oscillation Parameters

We have surveyed leptonic and grand unified models of neutrino masses and mixings in the literature which are still viable and give numerical predictions for the reactor angle, $θ_{13}$. The results are of considerable interest in anticipation of the next generation reactor experiments and the possible future need for neutrino factories. Of the 63 models considered which were published or posted on the Archive before June 2006, half predict values of $\sin^2 2θ_{13} \gsim 0.015$, which should yield positive signals for $\barν_e$ disappearance in the reactor experiments planned for the near future. Depending upon the outcome of those experiments, half of the models can be eliminated on the basis of the presence or absence of such an observed $\barν_e$ disappearance signal.

Low Scale Seesaw, Electron EDM and Leptogenesis in a Model with Spontaneous CP Violation

Strong correlations between leptogenesis and low energy CP violating leptonic processes have been shown by us to exist in the minimal left-right symmetric model with spontaneous CP violation. In this note, we investigate the implications of this model for the electric dipole moment of the electron. With an additional broken U(1)_H symmetry, the seesaw scale can be lowered to close to the electroweak scale. This additional symmetry also makes the connection between CP violation in quark sector to that in the lepton sector possible.

Gauge Trimming of Neutrino Masses

We show that under a new U(1) gauge symmetry, which is non-anomalous in the presence of one ``right-handed neutrino'' per generation and consistent with the standard model Yukawa couplings, the most general fermion charges are determined in terms of four rational parameters. This generalization of the B-L symmetry with generation-dependent lepton charges leads to neutrino masses induced by operators of high dimensionality. Neutrino masses are thus naturally small without invoking physics at energies above the TeV scale, whether neutrinos are Majorana or Dirac fermions. This ``Leptocratic'' Model predicts the existence of light quasi-sterile neutrinos with consequences for cosmology, and implies that collider experiments may reveal the origin of neutrino masses.

Relating Leptogenesis to Low Energy CP Violation

In the minimal left-right symmetric model with spontaneous CP violation, there are only two intrinsic CP violating phases to account for all CP violation in both the quark and lepton sectors. In addition, the left-and right-handed Majorana mass terms for the neutrinos are proportional to each other due to the parity in the model. This is thus a very constrained framework, making the existence of correlations among the CP violation in leptogenesis, neutrino oscillation and neutrinoless double beta decay possible.

Constraining New Models with Precision Electroweak Data

Electroweak precision data have been extensively used to constrain models containing physics beyond that of the Standard Model. When the model contains Higgs scalars in representations other than singlets or doublets, and hence rho not equal to 1 at tree level, a correct renormalization scheme requires more inputs than the three commonly used for the Standard Model case. In such cases, the one loop electroweak results cannot be split into a Standard Model contribution plus a piece which vanishes as the scale of new physics becomes much larger than M_W. We illustrate our results by presenting the dependence of M_W on the top quark mass in a model with a Higgs triplet and in the SU(2)_L x SU(2)_R left-right symmetric model. In these models, the allowed range for the lightest neutral Higgs mass can be as large as a few TeV.

Higgs Triplets and Limits from Precision Measurements

In this letter, we present our results on a global fit to precision electroweak data in a Higgs triplet model. In models with a triplet Higgs boson, a consistent renormalization scheme differs from that of the Standard Model and the global fit shows that a light Higgs boson with mass of 100-200 GeV is preferred. Triplet Higgs bosons arise in many extensions of the Standard Model, including the left-right model and the Little Higgs models. Our result demonstrates the importance of the scalar loops when there is a large mass splitting between the heavy scalars. It also indicates the significance of the global fit.

Fermion Mixing and Soft Leptogenesis in a SUSY SO(10) x SU(2)_F Model

We have constructed a SUSY SO(10) x SU(2)_F model in which a set of symmetric mass matrices with five texture zeros (having 11 parameters) leads to 22 measurable fermion masses, mixing angles and CP phases, all in agreement with available experimental data within one sigma. The LMA solution for solar neutrinos is obtained as well as neutrino mixing angles and absolute values of neutrino masses. We have investigated the possibility of baryogenesis resulting from soft leptogenesis. We find that, with soft SUSY masses assuming their natural values of the order of a TeV, the observed baryon asymmetry in the Universe can be accommodated in our model. Unlike models with lop-sided textures which give rise to a dangerously large decay rate for mu -> e + gamma, the decay rate we get is much suppressed and yet it is large enough to be accessible to the next generation of experiments.

Generation of Small Neutrino Majorana Masses in a Randall-Sundrum Model

We propose a model, in the framework of 5D with warped geometry, in which small neutrino Majorana masses are generated by tree level coupling of lepton doublets to a SU(2)_{L}-triplet scalar field, which is coupled to a bulk SM-singlet. The neutrino mass scale is determined by the bulk mass term (alpha_{S}) of the singlet as ve^{-2(alpha_{S}-1)*pi*kR}. This suppression is due to a small overlap between the profile of the singlet zero mode and the triplet, which is confined to the TeV brane. The generic form for the neutrino mass matrix due to the overlap between the fermions is not compatible with the LMA solution. This is overcome by imposing a Z_{4} symmetry, which is softly broken by couplings of the triplet Higgs to the lepton doublets. This model successfully reproduces the observed masses and mixing angles in charged lepton sector as well as in the neutrino sector, in addition to having a prediction of |U_{e3}| ~ O(0.01). The mass of the triplet is of the order of a TeV, and could be produced at upcoming collider experiments. The doubly charged member of the triplet can decay into two same sign charged leptons yielding the whole triplet coupling matrix which, in turn, gives the mixing matrix in the neutrino sector.

Relating Leptogenesis to Low Energy Flavor Violating Observables in Models with Spontaneous CP Violation

In the minimal left-right symmetric model, there are only two intrinsic CP violating phases to account for all CP violation in both the quark and lepton sectors, if CP is broken spontaneously by the complex phases in the VEV's of the scalar fields. In addition, the left- and right-handed Majorana mass terms for the neutrinos are proportional to each other due to the parity in the model. This is thus a very constrained framework, making the existence of correlations among the CP violation in leptogenesis, neutrino oscillation and neutrinoless double beta decay possible. In these models, CP violation in the leptonic sector and CP violation in the quark sector are also related. We find, however, that such connection is rather weak due to the large hierarchy in the bi-doublet VEV required by a realistic quark sector.
