Mean curvature flows and isotopy problems

In this note, we discuss the mean curvature flow of graphs of maps between Riemannian manifolds. Special emphasis will be placed on estimates of the flow as a non-linear parabolic system of differential equations. Several global existence theorems and applications to isotopy problems in geometry and topology will be presented. The results are based on joint works of the author with his collaborators I. Medoš, K. Smoczyk, and M.-P. Tsui.

Specifying angular momentum and center of mass for vacuum initial data sets

We show that it is possible to perturb arbitrary vacuum asymptotically flat spacetimes to new ones having exactly the same energy and linear momentum, but with center of mass and angular momentum equal to any preassigned values measured with respect to a fixed affine frame at infinity. This is in contrast to the axisymmetric situation where a bound on the angular momentum by the mass has been shown to hold for black hole solutions. Our construction involves changing the solution at the linear level in a shell near infinity, and perturbing to impose the vacuum constraint equations. The procedure involves the perturbation correction of an approximate solution which is given explicitly.

Lectures on mean curvature flows in higher codimensions

Mean curvature flows of hypersurfaces have been extensively studied and there are various different approaches and many beautiful results. However, relatively little is known about mean curvature flows of submanifolds of higher codimensions. This notes starts with some basic materials on submanifold geometry, and then introduces mean curvature flows in general dimensions and co-dimensions. The related techniques in the so called "blow-up" analysis are also discussed. At the end, we present some global existence and convergence results for mean curvature flows of two-dimensional surfaces in four-dimensional ambient spaces.

Some recent developments in Lagrangian mean curvature flows

We review some recent results on the mean curvature flows of Lagrangian submanifolds from the perspective of geometric partial differential equations. These include global existence and convergence results, characterizations of first-time singularities, and constructions of self-similar solutions.

Mean Curvature Flows and Isotopy of Maps Between Spheres

Let f be a smooth map between unit spheres of possibly different dimensions. We prove the global existence and convergence of the mean curvature flow of the graph of f under various conditions. A corollary is that any area-decreasing map between unit spheres (of possibly different dimensions) is homotopic to a constant map.

Constructing Kähler-Ricci solitons from Sasaki-Einstein manifolds

We construct gradient Kähler-Ricci solitons on Ricci-flat Kähler cone manifolds and on line bundles over toric Fano manifolds. Certain shrinking and expanding solitons are pasted together to form eternal solutions of the Ricci flow. The method we employ is the Calabi ansatz over Sasaki-Einstein manifolds, and the results generalize constructions of Cao and Feldman-Ilmanen-Knopf.

Evaluating quasilocal energy and solving optimal embedding equation at null infinity

We study the limit of quasilocal energy defined in [7] and [8] for a family of spacelike 2-surfaces approaching null infinity of an asymptotically flat spacetime. It is shown that Lorentzian symmetry is recovered and an energy-momentum 4-vector is obtained. In particular, the result is consistent with the Bondi-Sachs energy-momentum at a retarded time. The quasilocal mass in [7] and [8] is defined by minimizing quasilocal energy among admissible isometric embeddings and observers. The solvability of the Euler-Lagrange equation for this variational problem is also discussed in both the asymptotically flat and asymptotically null cases. Assuming analyticity, the equation can be solved and the solution is locally minimizing in all orders. In particular, this produces an optimal reference hypersurface in the Minkowski space for the spatial or null exterior region of an asymptotically flat spacetime.

The Curvature of Gradient Ricci Solitons

We study integral and pointwise bounds on the curvature of gradient shrinking Ricci solitons. As applications we discuss gap and compactness results for gradient shrinkers.

Generalized Lagrangian mean curvature flows in symplectic manifolds

An almost Kähler structure on a symplectic manifold $(N, ω)$ consists of a Riemannian metric $g$ and an almost complex structure $J$ such that the symplectic form $ω$ satisfies $ω(\cdot, \cdot)=g(J(\cdot), \cdot)$. Any symplectic manifold admits an almost Kähler structure and we refer to $(N, ω, g, J)$ as an almost Kähler manifold. In this article, we propose a natural evolution equation to investigate the deformation of Lagrangian submanifolds in almost Kähler manifolds. A metric and complex connection $\hn$ on $TN$ defines a generalized mean curvature vector field along any Lagrangian submanifold $M$ of $N$. We study the evolution of $M$ along this vector field, which turns out to be a Lagrangian deformation, as long as the connection $\hn$ satisfies an Einstein condition. This can be viewed as a generalization of the classical Lagrangian mean curvature flow in Kähler-Einstein manifolds where the connection $\hn$ is the Levi-Civita connection of $g$. Our result applies to the important case of Lagrangian submanifolds in a cotangent bundle equipped with the canonical almost Kähler structure and to other generalization of Lagrangian mean curvature flows, such as the flow considered by Behrndt \cite{b} in Kähler manifolds that are almost Einstein.

Limit of quasilocal mass at spatial infinity

We study the limit of quasilocal mass defined in [4] and [5] for a family of spacelike 2-surfaces in spacetime. In particular, we show the limit coincides with the ADM mass at spatial infinity. The limit for coordinate spheres of a boosted slice of the Schwarzchild solution is computed explicitly and shown to give the expected energy-momentum four vector.

Quasilocal mass in general relativity

There have been many attempts to define the notion of quasilocal mass for a spacelike 2-surface in spacetime by the Hamilton-Jacobi analysis. The essential difficulty in this approach is to identify the right choice of the background configuration to be subtracted from the physical Hamiltonian. Quasilocal mass should be nonnegative for surfaces in general spacetime and zero for surfaces in flat spacetime. In this letter, we propose a new definition of gauge-independent quasilocal mass and prove that it has the desired properties.

Isometric embeddings into the Minkowski space and new quasi-local mass

The definition of quasi-local mass for a bounded space-like region in space-time is essential in several major unsettled problems in general relativity. The quasi-local mass is expected to be a type of flux integral on the boundary two-surface and should be independent of whichever space-like region it bounds. An important idea which is related to the Hamiltonian formulation of general relativity is to consider a reference surface in a flat ambient space with the same first fundamental form and derive the quasi-local mass from the difference of the extrinsic geometries. This approach has been taken by Brown-York and Liu-Yau (see also related works) to define such notions using the isometric embedding theorem into the Euclidean three-space. However, there exist surfaces in the Minkowski space whose quasilocal mass is strictly positive. It appears that the momentum information needs to be accounted for to reconcile the difference. In order to fully capture this information, we use isometric embeddings into the Minkowski space as references. In this article, we first prove an existence and uniqueness theorem for such isometric embeddings. We then solve the boundary value problem for Jang's equation as a procedure to recognize such a surface in the Minkowski space. In doing so, we discover new expression of quasi-local mass. The new mass is positive when the ambient space-time satisfies the dominant energy condition and vanishes on surfaces in the Minkowski space. It also has the nice asymptotic behavior at spatial and null infinity. Some of these results were announced in [29].

Hamiltonian stationary cones and self-similar solutions in higher dimension

In [LW], we construct examples of two-dimensional Hamiltonian stationary self-shrinkers and self-expanders for Lagrangian mean curvature flows, which are asymptotic to the union of two Schoen-Wolfson cones. These self-shrinkers and self-expanders can be glued together to yield solutions of the Brakke flow - a weak formulation of the mean curvature flow. Moreover, there is no mass loss along the Brakke flow. In this paper, we generalize these results to higher dimension. We construct new higher dimensional Hamiltonian stationary cones of different topology as generalizations of the Schoen-Wolfson cones. Hamiltonian stationary self-shrinkers and self-expanders that are asymptotic to these Hamiltonian stationary cones are also constructed. They can also be glued together to produce eternal solutions of the Brakke flow without mass loss. Finally, we show the same conclusion holds for those Lagrangian self-similar examples recently found by Joyce, Tsui and the first author in [JLT].

Hamiltonian Stationary Shrinkers and Expanders for Lagrangian Mean Curvature Flows

We construct examples of shrinkers and expanders for Lagrangian mean curvature flows. These examples are Hamiltonian stationary and asymptotic to the union of two Hamiltonian stationary cones found by Schoen and Wolfson. The Schoen-Wolfson cones $C_{p,q}$ are obstructions to the existence problems of special Lagrangians or Lagrangian minimal surfaces in the variational approach. It is known that these cone singularities cannot be resolved by any smooth oriented Lagrangian submanifolds. The shrinkers and expanders that we found can be glued together to yield solutions of the Brakke motion-a weak formulation of the mean curvature flow. For any coprime pair $(p,q)$ other than $(2,1)$, we construct such a solution that resolves any single Schoen-Wolfson cone $C_{p,q}$. This thus provides an evidence to Schoen-Wolfson's conjecture that the $(2,1)$ cone is the only area-minimizing cone. Higher dimensional generalizations are also obtained.

A Note on the Stability and Uniqueness for Solutions to the Minimal Surface System

In this note, we show that the solution to the Dirichlet problem for the minimal surface system in any codimension is unique in the space of distance-decreasing maps. This follows as a corollary of the following stability theorem: if a minimal submanifold $Σ$ is the graph of a (strictly) distance-decreasing map, then $Σ$ is (strictly) stable. It is known that a minimal graph of codimension one is stable without assuming the distance-decreasing condition. We give another criterion for the stability in terms of the two-Jacobians of the map which in particular covers the codimension one case. All theorems are proved in the more general setting for minimal maps between Riemannian manifolds.

A generalization of Liu-Yau's quasi-local mass

In \cite{ly, ly2}, Liu and the second author propose a definition of the quasi-local mass and prove its positivity. This is demonstrated through an inequality which in turn can be interpreted as a total mean curvature comparison theorem for isometric embeddings of a surface of positive Gaussian curvature. The Riemannian version corresponds to an earlier theorem of Shi and Tam \cite{st}. In this article, we generalize such an inequality to the case when the Gaussian curvature of the surface is allowed to be negative. This is done by an isometric embedding into the hyperboloid in the Minkowski space and a future-directed time-like quasi-local energy-momentum is obtained.
