Implications of exclusive photon leptoproduction measurements for the proton charge-radius puzzle

In the present study, we extend our previous analysis of the proton electromagnetic form factors (FFs) extracted from exclusive photon leptoproduction (EP) measurements in kinematic regions where the Bethe-Heitler (BH) process dominates the cross section by including all currently available high-precision EP data from the CLAS and Hall~A Collaborations. Using the same phenomenological framework, we investigate the consistency among the different data sets, determine the proton electromagnetic FFs within several fitting scenarios, and extract the corresponding charge and magnetic radii. A significant tension is observed between the CLAS 2018 measurements and the remaining EP data. We show that excluding this data set, or restricting its kinematic coverage by imposing suitable low-$|t|$ cuts, leads to stable fits with good quality and consistent FFs. For all analyses, the extracted proton charge radius is smaller than the Particle Data Group average and most determinations based on elastic electron-proton scattering. However, the results are consistent, within uncertainties, with the PRad measurement and muonic hydrogen spectroscopy. In contrast, the magnetic radius is found to be compatible with the current world average. These results demonstrate that BH-dominated EP measurements provide an independent and complementary approach to determine the electromagnetic structure of the proton and offer additional support for the small-radius solution of the proton charge-radius puzzle.

Global Analyses of Generalized Parton Distributions with Diverse PDF Inputs

This paper investigates the crucial role of parton distribution functions (PDFs) in high-energy physics, particularly their impact on the extraction of generalized parton distributions (GPDs) at zero skewness. To this aim, we perform six global analyses of GPDs using different modern PDF sets (\texttt{NNPDF40}, \texttt{CT18}, and \texttt{MSHT20}) at three specific factorization scales ($ \mu = 2 $, $ 1.3 $, and $ 1 $ GeV) and different perturbative orders. A wide range of elastic electron scattering data is included in the analysis to constrain GPDs in a broad interval in the momentum transfer squared $ t $. The analyses reveal that the best overall description of experimental data is achieved using \texttt{NNPDF40} PDFs at the next-to-leading order (NLO), with moderate sensitivity to the choice of PDF input, especially in the region of low $ t $. The dependence on the perturbative order is relatively mild, indicating stability in the extraction procedure. We also show that different GPD sets become more consistent at larger $ |t| $ values, with down-quark GPDs experiencing greater suppression than up-quark GPDs. We show that the differences among the GPD parametrizations propagate into measurable quantities such as proton radii, leading to non-negligible variations in the extracted central values and uncertainties. The six extracted GPD sets, available at different scales and perturbative orders, provide valuable resources for future theoretical and phenomenological studies, offering flexibility for researchers in exploring the proton's internal structure.

Determination of proton electromagnetic form factors from DVCS measurements

We present a detailed analysis of the proton electromagnetic form factors (FFs) using exclusive photon leptoproduction (EP) data in kinematic regions where the Beth-Heitler (BH) contribution dominates the deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS) cross section By exploiting the sensitivity of the BH amplitude to the Dirac and Pauli FFs, we extract $F_{1}(t)$, $F_{2}(t)$, and the corresponding Sachs FFs within several fitting scenarios based on dipole and $P$-pole parametrizations, and evaluate the charge and magnetic radii of the proton. In this fitting scenario, we show that EP measurements in the range $0.11 < |t| < 0.45~\mathrm{GeV}^2$ can provide constraints on $F_1(t)$, while offering limited sensitivity to $F_2(t)$. The extracted charge radius values tend to be smaller than those obtained from traditional elastic electron-proton scattering measurements and are consistent, within uncertainties, with recent hig-precision PRad results. These findings indicate that EP measurements, especially when covering smaller values of $|t|$, can serve as a complementary tool for determining the proton electromagnetic structure and may contribute to ongoing efforts to better understand the proton charge radius. The methodology developed here provides a framework for future combined analyses of EP and elastic electron-proton scattering data which enables a unified determination of the nucleon FFs.

Determination of the pion generalized parton distributions at zero skewness

We perform a global QCD analysis of the pion electromagnetic form factor (FF) data from pion electroproduction and elastic pion scattering to extract the valence pion generalized parton distributions (GPDs) at zero skewness. The analysis uses three different sets of pion parton distribution functions (PDFs), namely xFitter, JAM21, and MAP23, to construct the GPD ansatz. Through a $\chi^2$ minimization and a careful parametrization scan, we determine the profile function parameters and find that only two parameters are sufficient to describe the data. The extracted valence pion GPDs from different analyses have similar $x$-dependence, with minor differences at small momentum transfer. The resulting theoretical predictions for the pion electromagnetic FF and its squared magnitude show good agreement with experimental measurements. Among the three analyses, the one using the MAP23 PDFs provides the best overall fit and is adopted as the final GPD set. Our results offer a consistent determination of the valence pion GPDs, indicating a minor impact of the choice of pion PDFs. The present study provides a solid foundation for future investigations of pion structure, including its charge radius, tomography, and mechanical properties.

Fresh look at the nuclear transparency using the generalized parton distributions

Color transparency (CT) is a fundamental phenomenon in QCD in which hadrons produced in high-energy exclusive processes traverse nuclear matter with minimal interactions. Nuclear transparency, which quantifies this attenuation suppression, is a quantity with high sensitivity to CT effects and provides critical insights into QCD dynamics in nuclear environments. In this study, we revisit nuclear transparency using the framework of generalized parton distributions (GPDs). By constructing nuclear GPDs (nGPDs) through the incorporation of nuclear parton distribution functions, we calculate the nuclear transparency $ T(Q^2) $ for the carbon nucleus as a function of momentum transfer $ Q^2 $ considering various definitions and compare the results obtained with available experimental data. Our finding highlights the importance of choosing a physically motivated definition of nuclear transparency. Moreover, we emphasize that a more reliable determination of nGPDs requires a dedicated global analysis incorporating nuclear data. Such an approach is essential for improving the theoretical understanding of CT and for achieving consistency with experimental observations in the high-$ Q^2 $ regime.

Eddington-inspired Born-Infeld gravity: Constraints from the generalized parton distributions (GPDs)

The Eddington-inspired Born-Infeld (EiBI) theory of gravity modifies general relativity in high-density regimes. It offers an alternative framework that avoids cosmological singularities and remodels gravitational dynamics within compact objects. An important feature of EiBI gravity is its additional parameter, $\kappa$, which governs deviations from standard gravitational behavior. In this study, we investigate constraints on $\kappa$ using the internal pressure distribution of the proton, derived from gravitational form factor (GFF) $ D(t) $ obtained through a QCD analysis of generalized parton distributions (GPDs). By comparing pressure profiles extracted from skewness-dependent GPDs with previous determinations based on deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS) data, we establish updated bounds on $\kappa$. Our results show that the choice of proton pressure model significantly impacts the constraints, with the strongest limits ($|\kappa| \leq 0.10\text{--}0.3\, \text{m}^5\, \text{kg}^{-1}\, \text{s}^{-2}$). We further demonstrate that constraints obtained based on the first and second moments of the pressure distribution yield competitive bounds compared to those derived from peak pressures or those derived from just the first moment. These findings highlight the importance of precise experimental and theoretical determinations of the proton's mechanical properties in testing alternative theories of gravity. The present study motivates future improvements in GPD reconstructions for stronger constraints on EiBI gravity and related modifications.

Can we determine the exact size of the nucleon?: A comprehensive study of different radii

The concept of nucleon radii plays a central role in our understanding of the internal structure of protons and neutrons, providing critical insights into the non-perturbative regime of quantum chromodynamics (QCD). While the charge radius is often interpreted as the ``size" of the nucleon, this interpretation is an oversimplification that overlooks the multifaceted nature of nucleon structure. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of the different nucleon radii, including the charge and magnetic radii, the axial radius, and the emerging concepts of mechanical and mass radii. We discuss the definitions as well as the experimental, theoretical and phenomenological determinations of these radii, highlighting their distinct physical origins and implications. By synthesizing recent experimental results and theoretical advancements, we emphasize that each radius reflects a specific aspect of the nucleon's internal structure, such as its electric charge distribution, magnetic properties, weak interactions, or internal mechanical stress. In particular, we address the common but misleading interpretation of the proton radius as a simple measure of its size, underscoring the nuanced and context-dependent nature of nucleon radii. Through this exploration, we aim to clarify the roles of these radii in characterizing nucleon structure and to identify open questions that remain to be addressed. This work contributes to a deeper understanding of the nucleon and its significance in the broader context of particle and nuclear physics.

Mechanical properties of the nucleon from the generalized parton distributions

The proton's internal structure is characterized not only by its charge and magnetic distribution but also by its mechanical and mass properties, which are encoded in the energy-momentum tensor (EMT) of quantum chromodynamics (QCD). These properties provide insights into the spatial distributions of energy, pressure, and shear forces within the proton. Understanding the proton's internal structure, including properties such as its mechanical and mass radii, is essential for unraveling the complex interplay between quarks and gluons that govern its stability and dynamics. In this study, we investigate the gravitational form factors (GFFs) of the proton, particularly the D-term, which encodes key information about the internal stress distribution, pressure, and shear forces within the nucleon. Using a model for skewness-dependent generalized parton distributions constructed from the double-distribution representation, we extract the quark contribution to the $ D(t) $ GFF of the EMT by analyzing available data on Compton form factors. We then employ this extracted GFF to explore the mechanical properties of the proton, including its mechanical and mass radii, as well as the internal pressure and shear force distributions. Our results provide new insights into the proton's internal structure and contribute to the broader understanding of nucleon properties.

The charge and magnetic radii of the nucleons from the generalized parton distributions

The proton-radius puzzle refers to the discrepancy observed in measurements of the proton's charge radius when using different methods. This inconsistency has prompted extensive research and debate within the physics community, as it challenges the understanding of quantum electrodynamics and the fundamental properties of protons. In the present study, we determine the charge and magnetic radii of the proton and neutron through a global analysis of the generalized parton distributions (GPDs) at zero skewness. We emphasize the importance of a simultaneous analysis of all available experimental data related to nucleon radii, rather than relying on individual experiments, specific observables, or limited kinematic regions. This comprehensive approach ensures robust and consistent results, avoiding values that are either too small or too large. Our analysis yields the following results: $ r_{pE} = 0.8558 \pm 0.0135~\textrm{fm} $, $ r_{pM} = 0.8268 \pm 0.0533~\textrm{fm} $, $ \left = -0.1181 \pm 0.0270~\textrm{fm}^2 $, and $ r_{nM} = 0.8367 \pm 0.0845~\textrm{fm} $.

Impact of JLab data on the determination of GPDs at zero skewness and new insights from transition form factors $ N\rightarrow \Delta $

It is well established now that the generalized parton distributions (GPDs) at zero skewness are playing important roles in some physical process such as elastic electron-nucleon scattering, elastic (anti)neutrino-nucleon scattering, and wide-angle Compton scattering (WACS) via various types of form factors (FFs). In this study, we are going to utilize the recent JLab measurements of the elastic electron-nucleon scattering reduced cross-section, namely GMp12, as a touchstone to unravel the tension observed between the measurements of the WACS cross-section and the data of the proton magnetic FF $ G_M^p $. We also investigate the impact of GMp12 data on valence unpolarized GPDs $ H_v^q $ and $ E_v^q $ at zero skewness by performing some $ \chi^2 $ analyses of the related experimental data. By calculating the electric and scalar quadrupole ratios, $ R_{EM} $ and $ R_{SM} $, and magnetic transition FF $ G^*_M/3G_D $ related to the nucleon-to-delta ($ N\rightarrow \Delta $) transition using the extracted GPDs and comparing the results with corresponding experimental measurements, we show that our results are in an excellent consistency with experiments, indicating the universality property of GPDs. We emphasize that the inclusion of these data in the future analysis of GPDs can significantly affect the extracted GPDs especially their uncertainties at smaller values of $ Q^2 $.

Impact of recent MINERvA measurement of the antineutrino-proton scattering cross-section on the generalized parton distributions

We investigate the impact of the new measurement of the antineutrino-proton scattering cross-section from the MINERvA Collaboration on generalized parton distributions (GPDs), particularly the polarized GPDs denoted as $\widetilde{H}^q$. To achieve this, we perform some QCD analyses of the MINERvA data, in addition to all available data of the proton's axial form factors. We demonstrate that MINERvA data lead to consistent results with other related experimental data, confirming the universality of GPDs. Our results indicate that MINERvA data can impose new constraints on GPDs, particularly on $\widetilde{H}^q$. Our predictions for the proton's axial charge radius, WACS cross-section, and axial form factor show good consistency with those of other studies and measurements. This leads us to conclude that the result of a more comprehensive analysis, considering all related experimental data, is not only reasonable but also more reliable, even in light of existing tensions among the data. The present study can be considered as a guideline for performing a new and comprehensive QCD global analysis of GPDs including the MINERvA measurements like that presented in Phys. Rev. D \textbf{107}, 096005 (2023).

Generalized parton distributions at zero skewness

We present a new determination of the generalized parton distributions (GPDs) with their uncertainties at zero skewness, $ \xi =0 $, through a simultaneous analysis of all available experimental data of the nucleon electromagnetic form factors (FFs), nucleon charge and magnetic radii, proton axial FFs (AFFs) and wide-angle Compton scattering (WACS) cross sections for the first time, and we investigate whether there is any tension between these data. This can be considered the most comprehensive analysis of GPDs at $ \xi=0 $ performed so far. We show that such an analysis provides the simultaneous determination of three kinds of GPDs, namely $ H^q $, $ \widetilde{H}^q $ and $ E^q $, considering also the sea-quark contributions. As a result, we find that the inclusion of the WACS and AFF data at larger values of the momentum transfer squared $ Q^2=-t $ can put new constraints on GPDs and change them drastically in some cases. We show that there is a considerable tension between the WACS and the proton magnetic form factor ($ G_M^p $) data, especially at larger values of $ -t $. However, we indicate that the results for the gravitational FF $ M_2 $ and the proton total angular momentum $ J^p $ calculated using the extracted GPDs are in relatively good agreement with the light-cone QCD sum rules (LCSRs) and lattice QCD predictions when the sea-quark contributions are considered and both WACS and $ G_M^p $ data are included in the analyses simultaneously.

Determination of the generalized parton distributions through the analysis of the world electron scattering data considering two-photon exchange corrections

We determine the valence generalized parton distributions (GPDs) $ H_v^q $ and $ E_v^q $ with their uncertainties at zero skewness by performing a $ \chi^2 $ analysis of the world electron scattering data considering two-photon exchange corrections. The data include a wide and updated range of the electric and magnetic form factors (FFs) of the proton and neutron. As a result, we find that there are no enough constraints on GPDs $ E_v^q $ from FFs data solely though $ H_v^q $ are well constrained. By including the new data of the charge and magnetic radius of the nucleon in the analysis, we show that they put new constraints on the final GPDs, especially on $ E_v^q $. Moreover, we calculate the gravitational FF $ M_2 $ and the total angular momentum $ J^q $ using the extracted GPDs and compare them with the FFs obtained from the light-cone QCD sum rules (LCSR) and Lattice QCD. We show that our results are interestingly in a good consistency with the pure theoretical predictions.

Simultaneous extraction of fragmentation functions of light charged hadrons with mass corrections

Achieving the highest possible precision for theoretical predictions at the present and future high-energy lepton and hadron colliders requires a precise determination of fragmentation functions (FFs) of light and heavy charged hadrons from a global QCD analysis with great accuracy. We describe a simultaneous determination of unpolarized FFs of charged pions, charged kaons and protons/antiprotons from single-inclusive hadron production in electron-positron annihilation (SIA) data at next-to-leading order and next-to-next-to-leading order accuracy in perturbative QCD. A new set of FFs, called {\tt SGKS20}, is presented. We include data for identified light charged hadrons ($π^\pm, K^\pm$ and $p/\bar{p}$) as well as for unidentified light charged hadrons, $h^\pm$ and show that these data have a significant impact on both size and uncertainties of the fragmentation functions. We examine the inclusion of higher-order perturbative QCD corrections and finite-mass effects. We compare the new {\tt SGKS20} FFs with other recent FFs available in the literature and find in general reasonable agreement, but also important differences for some parton species. We show that theoretical predictions obtained from our new FFs are in very good agreement with the analyzed SIA data, especially at small values of $z$. The {\tt SGKS20} FF sets presented in this work are available via the {\tt LHAPDF} interface.

Determination of generalized parton distributions through a simultaneous analysis of axial form factor and wide-angle Compton scattering data

In this work, we present a new set of unpolarized ($ H $) and polarized ($\widetilde{H}$) generalized parton distributions (GPDs) that have been determined using a simultaneous $ χ^2 $ analysis of the nucleon axial form factor (AFF) and wide-angle Compton scattering (WACS) experimental data at the next-to-leading order (NLO) accuracy in QCD. We explore various Ansatzes presented in the literature for GPDs, which use forward parton distributions as input, and choose the ones most suited to our analysis. The experimental data included in our analysis cover a wide range of the squared transverse momentum, which is $ 0.025 < -t < 6.46 $ GeV$ ^2 $. We show that the WACS data affect significantly the large $-t$ behavior of $\widetilde{H}$. The polarized GPDs obtained from the simultaneous analysis of AFF and WACS data differ considerably from the corresponding ones obtained by analyzing AFF and WACS separately, and have less uncertainties. We show that the theoretical predictions obtained using our GPDs are in good agreement with the analyzed AFF and WACS data for the entire range of $ -t $ studied. Finally, we obtain the impact parameter dependent parton distributions, both in an unpolarized and in a transversely polarized proton, and present them as tomography plots.

Implementation of target mass corrections and higher-twist effects in the xFitter framework

Knowledge of parton distribution functions (PDFs) at large momentum fraction $ x $ is not only important to study the flavor and spin dynamics of quarks in the nucleon, but also to search for signals of new physics at collider experiments. It is well known now that the nonperturbative QCD effects generally play a more significant role at such kinematic regions. In this work, we present an open-source QCD analysis of PDFs considering target mass corrections (TMCs) and higher-twist (HT) effects which are necessary when the analysis includes also data points from deep inelastic scattering (DIS) with larger values of $ x $ and smaller values of photon virtuality $ Q^2 $. To this aim, we use the xFitter package, as a comprehensive and powerful tool for studying PDFs. We report and discuss our recent activities on the implementation of TMCs and HT effects in the xFitter framework in a user-friendly way, so that the user can switch on or off them, and also choose between different options. We check the validity of the modifications by performing sample analyses of PDFs considering TMCs and HT effects and using a wide range of DIS data.

Role of higher twist effects in diffractive DIS and determination of diffractive parton distribution functions

The current analysis aims to present the results of a QCD analysis of diffractive parton distribution functions (diffractive PDFs) at next-to-leading order (NLO) accuracy in perturbative QCD. In this new determination of diffractive PDFs, we use all available and up-to-date diffractive deep inelastic scattering (diffractive DIS) datasets from H1 and ZEUS Collaborations at HERA including the most recent H1/ZEUS combined measurements. In this analysis, we consider the heavy quark contributions to the diffractive DIS in the so-called framework of {\tt FONLL} general mass variable flavor number scheme (GM-VFNS). The uncertainties on the diffractive PDFs are calculated using the standard "Hessian error propagation" which served to provide a more realistic estimate of the uncertainties. This analysis are enriched, for the first time, by including the nonperturbative higher twist (HT) effects in the calculation of diffractive DIS cross sections which are particularly important at large-$x$ and low $Q^{2}$ regions. Then, the stability and reliability of the extracted diffractive PDFs are investigated upon inclusion of HT effects. We discuss the novel aspects of the approach used in this QCD fit, namely, optimized and flexible parameterizations of diffractive PDFs, the inclusion of HT effects, and considering the recent H1/ZEUS combined dataset. Finally, we present the extracted diffractive PDFs with and without the presence of HT effects, and discuss the fit quality and the stability upon variations of the kinematic cuts and the fitted datasets. We show that the inclusion of HT effects in diffractive DIS can improve the description of the data which leads, in general, to a very good agreement between data and theory predictions.

Nucleon axial form factor from generalized parton distributions

It is well established that the nucleon form factors can be related to Generalized Parton Distributions (GPDs) through sum-rules. On the other hand, GPDs can be expressed in terms of Parton Distribution Functions (PDFs) according to Diehl's model. In this work, we use this model to calculate polarized GPDs for quarks ($\widetilde{H}_q$) using the available polarized PDFs obtained from the experimental data, and then study the axial form factor of nucleon. We determine parameters of the model using standard $χ^2$ analysis of experimental data. It is shown that some parameters should be readjusted, as compared to some previously reported values, to obtain better consistency between the theoretical predictions and experimental data. Moreover, we study in details the uncertainty of nucleon axial form factor due to various sources.
