Process-Aware AI for Rainfall-Runoff Modeling: A Mass-Conserving Neural Framework with Hydrological Process Constraints

Machine learning models can achieve high predictive accuracy in hydrological applications but often lack physical interpretability. The Mass-Conserving Perceptron (MCP) provides a physics-aware artificial intelligence (AI) framework that enforces conservation principles while allowing hydrological process relationships to be learned from data. In this study, we investigate how progressively embedding physically meaningful representations of hydrological processes within a single MCP storage unit improves predictive skill and interpretability in rainfall-runoff modeling. Starting from a minimal MCP formulation, we sequentially introduce bounded soil storage, state-dependent conductivity, variable porosity, infiltration capacity, surface ponding, vertical drainage, and nonlinear water-table dynamics. The resulting hierarchy of process-aware MCP models is evaluated across 15 catchments spanning five hydroclimatic regions of the continental United States using daily streamflow prediction as the target. Results show that progressively augmenting the internal physical structure of the MCP unit generally improves predictive performance. The influence of these process representations is strongly hydroclimate dependent: vertical drainage substantially improves model skill in arid and snow-dominated basins but reduces performance in rainfall-dominated regions, while surface ponding has comparatively small effects. The best-performing MCP configurations approach the predictive skill of a Long Short-Term Memory benchmark while maintaining explicit physical interpretability. These results demonstrate that embedding hydrological process constraints within AI architectures provides a promising pathway toward interpretable and process-aware rainfall-runoff modeling.

Exploring Chalcogen Influence on Sc2BeX4 (X = S, Se) for Green Energy Applications Using DFT

We present a first-principles density functional theory study of the structural, electronic, optical, and thermoelectric properties of Sc2BeX4 (X = S, Se) chalcogenides for energy applications. Both compounds are dynamically and thermodynamically stable, exhibiting negative formation energies of -2.6 eV (Sc2BeS4) and -2.2 eV (Sc2BeSe4). They feature direct band gaps of 1.8 eV and 1.2 eV, respectively, within the TB-mBJ approximation, indicating strong visible-light absorption. Optical analysis reveals high static dielectric constants (9.0 for S and 16.5 for Se), absorption peaks near 13.5 eV, and reflectivity below 30 percent. Thermoelectric calculations predict p-type conduction with Seebeck coefficients reaching 2.5e-4 V/K and electrical conductivities of 2.45e18 and 1.91e18 (Ohm m s)^-1 at 300 K. Power factors approach 1.25e11 W/K^2 m s, with a maximum dimensionless figure of merit (ZT) of 0.80 at 800 K. Calculated Debye temperatures (420 K for Sc2BeS4 and 360 K for Sc2BeSe4) imply low lattice thermal conductivity. These findings establish Sc2BeX4 chalcogenides as promising materials for photovoltaic and thermoelectric applications.

Analysis of the satellite navigational data in the Baseband signal processing of Galileo E5 AltBOC signal

The advancement in the world of global satellite systems has enhanced the accuracy and reliability between various constellations. However, these enhancements have made numerous challenges for the receivers designer. For instance, comparing the acquisition and tracking of the Galileo signals turn into relatively complex processes after the utilization of Alternate Binary Offset Carrier AltBOC modulation scheme. This paper presents an efficient and unique method for comparing baseband signal processing of the complex receiver structure of the Galileo E5 AltBOC signal. More specifically, the data demodulation has attained after comparing the noisy satellite data sets with the clean data sets. Moreover, the paper presents the implementation of signal acquisition, code tracking, multipath noise characteristics, and carrier tracking for various datasets of the satellite after the eradication of noise. The results obtained in the paper are promising and provide the through treatment to the problem.
