Nanolamellar Hybrid High-Entropy Alloys with Superior Micromechanical Properties

Metallic materials with nanolamellar structures, such as pearlitic steels, exhibit high strength with appropriate ductility. Considering the potential ability of such nanolamellar structures to break the traditional strength-ductility trade-off in metallic alloys, this study aims at developing a unique nanolamellar structure with superior micromechanical properties by combining two different high-entropy alloys (HEAs). Al0.1CoCrFeNi with the face-centered cubic (FCC) structure is combined with TiZrHfNbTa with the body-centered cubic (BCC) structure using high-pressure torsion (HPT) of half discs of each alloy. That way, a layered hybrid structure was formed, with layer thickness down to about 61 nm. The BCC/FCC nanolamellar hybrid structure exhibits an exceptional combination of properties with an ultimate tensile strength of 2.4 GPa, a maximum bending strength of 4.0 GPa, and a hardness of 740 Hv, while retaining some ductility/plasticity under both tensile and bending loads. Detailed analyses by synchrotron diffraction, electron microscopy and atom probe tomography suggests that these high strength and hardness, which are superior to those of nanostructured HEAs, result from: (i) extreme grain boundary strengthening from nanograins with a mean size of 22 nm, (ii) presence of defects such as dislocations in FCC and BCC, stacking faults in FCC and twins in FCC, and (iii) interphase hardening from BCC/FCC nanolamellar boundaries with about 30% contribution to the total hardness. This work demonstrates that combining two HEAs using HPT into a defect-rich hybrid nanolamellar composite forms a promising synergy of ultrahigh strength and reasonable ductility/plasticity.

Contract-based Verification of Digital Twins

Digital twins are becoming powerful tools in industrial applications, offering virtual representations of cyber-physical systems. However, verification of these models remains a significant challenge due to the potentially large datasets used by the digital twin. This paper introduces an innovative methodology for verifying neural network-based digital twin models, in a black-box fashion, by integrating model checking into the process. The latter relies on defining and applying system-level contracts that capture the system's requirements, to verify the behavior of digital twin models, implemented in Simulink. We develop an automated solution that simulates the digital twin model for certain inputs, and feeds the predicted outputs together with the inputs to the contract model described as a network of timed automata in the UPPAAL model checker. The latter verifies whether the predicted outputs fulfill the specified contracts. This approach allows us to identify scenarios where the digital twin's behavior fails to meet the contracts, without requiring the digital twin's design technicalities. We apply our method to a boiler system case study for which we identify prediction errors via contract verification. Our work demonstrates the effectiveness of integrating model checking with digital twin models for continuous improvement.

VPAL: A novel method to reduce reconstruction time for 5D free-running imaging

Purpose: Ferumoxytal-enhanced 5D free-running whole heart CMR provides image quality comparable to CTA, but requires hours-long reconstruction time, preventing clinical usage. This study developed a variable projection augmented Lagrangian (VPAL) method for 5D motion-resolved image reconstruction and compared it with alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) in five numerical simulations and 15 in-vivo pediatric data set. Approach: Relative error of the reconstructed images against the ground-truth images was assessed in numerical simulations. In-vivo analysis compared reconstruction time, mid-short axis (SA) blood-myocardium sharpness, left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), and a radiologist's image quality ratings between VPAL and ADMM. A paired t-test (p<0.05) was used to determine statistical significance, while linear regression and Bland-Altman analysis for agreement assessments. Results: VPAL and ADMM had similar relative errors compared to the ground truth, p = 0.07. In in-vivo datasets, VPAL reduced the reconstruction time from 16.3 +/- 3.6 hours (ADMM) to 4.7 +/- 1.1 hours (VPAL), p=1e-10. Blood-myocardium border sharpness in VPAL closely correlates to ADMM , R^2 = 0.97. The LVEFs values measured by VPAL and ADMM reconstructions are largely similar, 56 +/- 6 % in ADMM and 56 +/- 6 % in VPAL, p=0.55. Both VPAL and ADMM reconstructions have good to excellent diagnostic ratings (VPAL vs. ADMM: 3.9 +/- 0.3 vs. 3.8 +/- 0.4 in 2-chamber; 3.9 +/- 0.4 vs. 3.9 +/- in 4-chamber; 3.7 +/- 0.5 vs. 3.7 +/- 0.5 in mid-SA reformatted views. Conclusion: VPAL enables faster reconstruction than ADMM while maintaining equivalent image quality for functional assessments, supporting its potential for clinical use.

Correction to the Friedmann equation with Sharma-Mittal entropy: A new perspective on cosmology

As the black hole entropy does not obey the area law on it. The area law, given by $S\sim A^\delta\text{or}A^R$, where $\delta$ and $R$ , for $0\leq\delta\leq 1$, $0<R\leq 1$, indicates the amount of quantum gravitational deformation effects. This shows that gravity and thermodynamics are closely related. Based on this deep connection, we tried to discuss the effects of Sharma-Mittal entropy on the cosmological equations. We also investigated whether the apparent horizon-enclosed universe was consistence with the generalized second law of thermodynamics. Finally, using the gravity emergence scenario, we derived the modified Friedmann equation and, compared it with that derived from the first law of thermodynamics in the presence of Sharma-Mittal entropy. It is observed that we can recover the results for standard cosmology when $R,\delta=1$.

Detecting COVID-19 from Chest Computed Tomography Scans using AI-Driven Android Application

The COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 2019) pandemic affected more than 186 million people with over 4 million deaths worldwide by June 2021. The magnitude of which has strained global healthcare systems. Chest Computed Tomography (CT) scans have a potential role in the diagnosis and prognostication of COVID-19. Designing a diagnostic system which is cost-efficient and convenient to operate on resource-constrained devices like mobile phones would enhance the clinical usage of chest CT scans and provide swift, mobile, and accessible diagnostic capabilities. This work proposes developing a novel Android application that detects COVID-19 infection from chest CT scans using a highly efficient and accurate deep learning algorithm. It further creates an attention heatmap, augmented on the segmented lung parenchyma region in the CT scans through an algorithm developed as a part of this work, which shows the regions of infection in the lungs. We propose a selection approach combined with multi-threading for a faster generation of heatmaps on Android Device, which reduces the processing time by about 93%. The neural network trained to detect COVID-19 in this work is tested with F1 score and accuracy, both of 99.58% and sensitivity of 99.69%, which is better than most of the results in the domain of COVID diagnosis from CT scans. This work will be beneficial in high volume practices and help doctors triage patients in the early diagnosis of the COVID-19 quickly and efficiently.

Comparative Analysis of Machine Learning Approaches to Analyze and Predict the Covid-19 Outbreak

Background. Forecasting the time of forthcoming pandemic reduces the impact of diseases by taking precautionary steps such as public health messaging and raising the consciousness of doctors. With the continuous and rapid increase in the cumulative incidence of COVID-19, statistical and outbreak prediction models including various machine learning (ML) models are being used by the research community to track and predict the trend of the epidemic, and also in developing appropriate strategies to combat and manage its spread. Methods. In this paper, we present a comparative analysis of various ML approaches including Support Vector Machine, Random Forest, K-Nearest Neighbor and Artificial Neural Network in predicting the COVID-19 outbreak in the epidemiological domain. We first apply the autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) method to identify and model the short and long-run relationships of the time-series COVID-19 datasets. That is, we determine the lags between a response variable and its respective explanatory time series variables as independent variables. Then, the resulting significant variables concerning their lags are used in the regression model selected by the ARDL for predicting and forecasting the trend of the epidemic. Results. Statistical measures i.e., Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), Mean Absolute Error (MAE) and Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE) are used for model accuracy. The values of MAPE for the best selected models for confirmed, recovered and deaths cases are 0.407, 0.094 and 0.124 respectively, which falls under the category of highly accurate forecasts. In addition, we computed fifteen days ahead forecast for the daily deaths, recover, and confirm patients and the cases fluctuated across time in all aspects. Besides, the results reveal the advantages of ML algorithms for supporting decision making of evolving short term policies.

Estimation of Time Delay caused by Point Geometry in Public Transport

Travel time prediction is a well-renowned topic of research. It is primarily influenced by traffic congestion, road conditions and route geometry. Among them route geometry at any point is not investigated enough to find a sound spatial dynamics of timing delays and quality of public transport. This study investigates the reliability of travel time to build a new key performance indicator of public transport network. We have introduced a suitable point wise clustering followed by an adapted statistical significance analysis. The outcome is an estimation of absolute delay at geometrical points independent of the delay at bus station. This outcome serves as an incremental delay towards overall delay. Our investigation suggests that this novel metric of delay time contributes around 23.56% in overall delay. The proposed methodology (here in known as Delay Time and Quality of Service (DT QS)) is capable of providing novel insights which attracts attention among policy makers of public transport operators. The novel insight is coined with assignment of high value to level-of-service attributes. Moreover, the proposed technique is independent of any assumption of normal distribution.

Cohen-Macaulay Monomial Ideals of Codimension 2

We give a structure theorem for Cohen Macaulay monomial ideals of codimension 2, and describe all possible relation matrices of such ideals. In case that the ideal has a linear resolution, the relation matrices can be identified with the spanning trees of a connected chordal graph with the property that each distinct pair of maximal cliques of the graph has at most one vertex in common.
