Entanglement and Bell States in Superconducting Flux Qubits

We theoretically study macroscopic quantum entanglement in two superconducting flux qubits. To manipulate the state of two flux qubits, a Josephson junction is introduced in the connecting loop coupling the qubits. Increasing the coupling energy of the Josephson junction makes it possible to achieve relatively strong coupling between the qubits, causing two-qubit tunneling processes even dominant over the single-qubit tunneling process in the states of two qubits. It is shown that due to the two-qubit tunneling processes both the ground state and excited state of the coupled flux qubits can be a Bell type state, maximally entangled. The parameter regimes for the Bell states are discussed in terms of magnetic flux and Josephson coupling energies.

Macroscopic Many-Qubit Interactions in Superconducting Flux Qubits

Superconducting flux qubits are considered to investigate macroscopic many-qubit interactions. Many-qubit states based on current states can be manipulated through the current-phase relation in each superconducting loop. For flux qubit systems comprised of $N$ qubit loops, a general expression of low energy Hamiltonian is presented in terms of low energy levels of qubits and macroscopic quantum tunnelings between the many-qubit states. Many-qubit interactions classified by {\em Ising type- or tunnel-}exchange interactions can be observable experimentally. Flux qubit systems can provide various artificial-spin systems to study many-body systems that cannot be found naturally.

Antiferromagnetic metal to heavy-fermion metal quantum phase transition in the Kondo lattice model: A strong coupling approach

We study the quantum phase transition from an antiferromagnetic metal to a heavy fermion metal in the Kondo lattice model. Based on the strong coupling approach we {\it first} diagonalize the Kondo coupling term. Since this strong coupling approach makes the resulting Kondo term {\it relevant}, the Kondo hybridization persists even in the antiferromagnetic metal, indicating that fluctuations of Kondo singlets are not critical in the phase transition. We find that the quantum transition in our strong coupling approach results from {\it softening of antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations of localized spins}, driven by the Kondo interaction. Thus, the volume change of Fermi surface becomes continuous across the transition. ......

Controllable Coupling in Phase-Coupled Flux Qubits

We propose a scheme for tunable coupling of phase-coupled flux qubits. The phase-coupling scheme can provide a strong coupling strength of the order of Josephson coupling energy of Josephson junctions in the connecting loop, while the previously studied inductive coupling scheme cannot provide due to small mutual inductance and induced currents. We show that, in order to control the coupling, we need {\it two} dc-SQUID's in the connecting loop and the control fluxes threading the dc-SQUID's must be in {\it opposite} directions. The coupling strength is analytically calculated as a function of the control flux at the co-resonance point.

Current-phase relation of the SNS junction in a superconducting loop

We study the current-phase relation of the superconductor/normal/superconductor (SNS) junction imbedded in a superconducting loop. Considering the current conservation and free energy minimum conditions, we obtain the persistent currents of the normal/superconductor (NS) loop. At finite temperature we can explain the experimentally observed highly non-sinusoidal currents which have maxima near the zero external flux.

Diamagnetic response of Aharonov-Bohm rings: Impurity backward scatterings

We report a theoretical calculation on the persistent currents of disordered normal-metal rings. It is shown that the diamagnetic responses of the rings in the vicinity of the zero magnetic field are attributed to multiple backward scatterings off the impurities. We observe the transition from the paramagnetic response to the diamagnetic one as the strength of disorder grows using both the analytic calculation and the numerical exact diagonalization.

Coupling of Josephson current qubits using a connecting loop

We propose a coupling scheme for the three-Josephson junction qubits which uses a connecting loop, but not mutual inductance. Present scheme offers the advantages of a large and tunable level splitting in implementing the controlled-NOT (CNOT) operation. We calculate the switching probabilities of the coupled qubits in the CNOT operations and demonstrate that present CNOT gate can meet the criteria for the fault-tolerant quantum computing. We obtain the coupling strength as a function of the coupling energy of the Josephson junction and the length of the connecting loop which varies with selecting two qubits from the scalable design.

Kondo lattice model with a direct exchange interaction between localized moments

We study the Kondo lattice model with a direct antiferromagnetic exchange interaction between localized moments. Ferromagnetically long-range ordered state coexisting with the Kondo screening shows a continuous quantum phase transition to the Kondo singlet state. We obtain the value of the critical point where the magnetizations of the localized moments and the conduction electrons vanish. The magnetization curves yield a universal critical exponent independent of the filling factors and the strength of the interaction between localized moments. It is shown that the direct exchange interaction between localized moments introduces another phase transition from an antiferromagnetic ordering to a ferromagnetic ordering for small Kondo exchange interaction. We also explain the local minimum of the Kondo temperature in recent experiments.

Double-Well Potentials in Current Qubits

The effective potentials of the rf-SQUID and three-Josephson junction loop with a penetrating external magnetic flux are studied. Using the periodic boundary condition for the phase evolution of the wave function of Cooper pairs, we obtain new periodic potentials with cusp barriers in contrast with the usual smooth double-well potential. The tunneling through the cusp barrier becomes dominant for a parameter regime where the self inductance of the superconducting loop and the Josephson coupling energy are large. Calculating the tunneling frequency we see that the cusp potential may offer a more efficient qubit.

Mesoscopic Luttinger Liquid Theory in an Aharonov-Bohm Ring

A careful study on the mesoscopic PC in a Luttinger liquid ring is carried out. It is shown that discreteness plays an important role in calculating the PC caused by the magnetic flux. At zero temperature, the current is shown to be independent of the interaction even when $g=g_2-g_4$ is not zero. The current becomes enhanced at finite temperatures comparing to the non-interacting case, when the parameter g is positive.

Ferromagnetic Fixed Point of the Kondo Model in a Luttinger Liquid

The Kondo effect in a Luttinger liquid is studied using the renormalization group method. By renormalizing the boson fields, scaling equations to the second order for an arbitrary Luttinger interaction are obtained. For the ferromagnetic Kondo coupling, a spin bound state(triplet) can be realized without invoking a nearest neighbor spin interaction in agreement with the recent Bethe ansatz calculation. The scaling theory in the presence of the scalar potential shows that there is no interplay between the magnetic and non-magnetic interaction. Also a study on the crossover behavior of the Kondo temperature between the exponential and the power law type is presented.
