Proximity effects of vortices in neutron $^3P_2$ superfluids in neutron stars: Vortex core transitions and covalent bonding of vortex molecules

Neutron $^3P_2$ superfluids consisting of neutron pairs with the total angular momentum $J=2$ with spin-triplet and $P$-wave are believed to be realized in neutron star cores. Within the Ginzburg-Landau theory it was previously found that a singly quantized vortex is split into two half-quantized non-Abelian vortices connected by one (or three) soliton(s) forming a vortex molecule with the soliton bond(s), in the absence (presence) of magnetic field parallel to them. In this paper, we investigate proximity effects of two vortex molecules by exhausting all possible two vortex molecule states consisting of four half-quantized vortices and determining the phase diagram spanned by the magnetic field and rotation speed. As the rotation speed is increased, the distance between the two vortex molecules becomes shorter. In the magnetic field below the critical value, we find that as the rotation speed is increased, the two separated vortex molecules transit to a dimerized vortex molecule, where the two vortex molecules are bridged by two solitons that we call "covalent bonds" in analogy with chemical molecules. We also find that the orders of the constituent half-quantized vortex cores transit from a ferromagnetic order to a cyclic order as the vortex molecules come closer. On the other hand, no dimerization occurs in the magnetic field above the critical value. Instead, we find a transition for the polarization direction of the vortex molecules from a configuration parallel to the separation to one perpendicular to the separation as they come closer. We also show some examples of three and four vortex molecule states.

Coleman-Weinberg Abrikosov-Nielsen-Olesen strings

We study properties of Abrikosov-Nielsen-Olesen (ANO) strings with the Coleman-Weinberg (CW) potential, which we call CW-ANO strings. While the scale-invariant scalar potential has a topologically trivial vacuum admitting no strings at the classical level, quantum correction allows topologically nontrivial vacua and stable string solutions. We find that the system of the CW potential exhibits significant difference from that of the conventional Abelian-Higgs model with the quadratic-quartic potential. While a single-winding string is qualitatively similar in both systems, and the static intervortex force between two strings at large distance is attractive/repulsive in the type-I/II regime for both, that between two CW-ANO strings exhibits a nontrivial structure. It develops an energy barrier between them at intermediate distance, implying that the string with winding number $n > 1$ can constitute a metastable bound state even in the type-II regime. We name such a superconductor type-$\overline{1.5}$. We also discuss implications to high-energy physics and cosmology.

$\mathbb{C}P^2$ Skyrmion Crystals in an SU(3) Magnet with a Generalized Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya Interaction

We study $\mathbb{C}P^2$ Skyrmion crystals in the ferromagnetic SU(3) Heisenberg model with a generalization of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and the Zeeman term. The model possesses two different types of Skyrmion crystals with unit-Skyrmions that can be interpreted as bound states of two half-Skyrmions or four quarter-Skyrmions. Our study on $\mathbb{C}P^2$ Skyrmion crystals opens up the possibility for useful future applications since $\mathbb{C}P^2$ Skyrmions have more degrees of freedom than the usual $\mathbb{C}P^1$ (magnetic) Skyrmions.

Braiding with Majorana lattices: Groundstate degeneracy and supersymmetry

Majorana-based topological qubits are expected to exploit the nonabelian braiding statistics of Majorana modes in topological superconductors to realize fault-tolerant topological quantum computation. Scalable qubit designs require several Majorana modes localized on quantum wires networks, with braiding operations relying on the presence of the groundstate degeneracy of the topologically nontrivial superconducting phase. However, this degeneracy is lifted due to the hybridization between Majorana modes localized at a finite distance. Here, we describe a braiding protocol in a trijunction where each branch consists of a lattice of Majorana modes overlapping at a finite distance. We find that the energy splitting between the groundstate and the lowest-energy state decreases exponentially with the number of Majorana modes if the system is in its topologically nontrivial regime. This result does not rely on the specific braiding geometry and on the details of the braiding scheme but is a consequence of the supersymmetry and nontrivial topology of the effective low-energy Hamiltonian describing the Majorana lattice.

Quantum nucleation of topological solitons

The chiral soliton lattice is an array of topological solitons realized as ground states of QCD at finite density under strong magnetic fields or rapid rotation, and chiral magnets with an easy-plane anisotropy. In such cases, topological solitons have negative energy due to topological terms originating from the chiral magnetic or vortical effect and the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, respectively. We study quantum nucleation of topological solitons in the vacuum through quantum tunneling in $2+1$ and $3+1$ dimensions, by using a complex $ϕ^4$ (or the axion) model with a topological term proportional to an external field, which is a simplification of low-energy theories of the above systems. In $2+1$ dimensions, a pair of a vortex and an anti-vortex is connected by a linear soliton, while in $3+1$ dimensions, a vortex is string-like, a soliton is wall-like, and a disk of a soliton wall is bounded by a string loop. Since the tension of solitons can be effectively negative due to the topological term, such a composite configuration of a finite size is created by quantum tunneling and subsequently grows rapidly. We estimate the nucleation probability analytically in the thin-defect approximation and fully calculate it numerically using the relaxation (gradient flow) method. The nucleation probability is maximized when the direction of the soliton is perpendicular to the external field. We find a good agreement between the thin-defect approximation and direct numerical simulation in $2+1$ dimensions if we read the vortex tension from the numerics, while we find a difference between them at short distances interpreted as a remnant energy in $3+1$ dimensions.

Dispersive 1D Majorana modes with emergent supersymmetry in 1D proximitized superconductors via spatially-modulated potentials and magnetic fields

In condensed matter systems, zero-dimensional or one-dimensional Majorana modes can be realized respectively as the end and edge states of one-dimensional and two-dimensional topological superconductors. In this $\textit{top-down}$ approach, $(d-1)$-dimensional Majorana modes are obtained as the boundary states of a topologically nontrivial $d$-dimensional bulk. In a $\textit{bottom-up}$ approach instead, $d$-dimensional Majorana modes in a $d$-dimensional system can be realized as the continuous limit of a periodic lattice of coupled $(d-1)$-dimensional Majorana modes. We illustrate this idea by considering one-dimensional proximitized superconductors with spatially-modulated potential or magnetic fields. The ensuing inhomogeneous topological state exhibits one-dimensional counterpropagating Majorana modes with finite dispersion, and with a Majorana gap that can be controlled by external fields. In the massless case, the Majorana modes have opposite Majorana polarizations and pseudospins, are conformally invariant, and realize centrally extended quantum mechanical supersymmetry. The supersymmetry exhibits spontaneous partial breaking. Consequently, the massless Majorana fermion can be identified as a Goldstino, i.e., the Nambu-Goldstone fermion associated with the spontaneously broken supersymmetry.

1D Majorana Goldstinos and partial supersymmetry breaking in quantum wires

Realizing Majorana modes in topological superconductors, i.e., the condensed-matter counterpart of Majorana fermions in particle physics, may lead to a major advance in the field of topologically-protected quantum computation. Here, we introduce one-dimensional, counterpropagating, and dispersive Majorana modes as bulk excitations of a periodic chain of partially-overlapping, zero-dimensional Majorana modes in proximitized nanowires via periodically-modulated fields. This system realizes centrally-extended quantum-mechanical supersymmetry with spontaneous partial supersymmetry breaking. The massless Majorana modes are the Nambu-Goldstone fermions (Goldstinos) associated with the spontaneously broken supersymmetry. Their experimental fingerprint is a dip-to-peak transition in the zero-bias conductance, which is generally not expected for Majorana modes overlapping at a finite distance. Moreover, the Majorana modes can slide along the wire by applying a rotating magnetic field, realizing a "Majorana pump". This may suggest new braiding protocols and implementations of topological qubits.

Domain Wall Skyrmions in Chiral Magnets

Domain wall skyrmions are skyrmions trapped inside a domain wall. We investigate domain wall skyrmions in chiral magnets using a fully analytic approach. Treating the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction perturbatively, we construct the low-energy effective theory of a magnetic domain wall in an $O(3)$ sigma model with the DM interaction and an easy-axis potential term, yielding a sine-Gordon model. We then construct domain wall skyrmions as sine-Gordon solitons along the domain wall. We also construct domain wall skyrmions on top of a pair of a domain wall and an anti-domain wall. One of characteristic feature of domain wall skyrmions is that both skyrmions and anti-skyrmions are equally stable inside the domain wall, unlike the bulk in which only one of them is stable.

All-order Resurgence from Complexified Path Integral in a Quantum Mechanical System with Integrability

We discuss all-order transseries in one of the simplest quantum mechanical systems: a U(1) symmetric single-degree-of-freedom system with a first-order time derivative term. Following the procedure of the Lefschetz thimble method, we explicitly evaluate the path integral for the generating function of the Noether charge and derive its exact transseries expression. Using the conservation law, we find all the complex saddle points of the action, which are responsible for the non-perturbative effects and the resurgence structure of the model. The all-order power-series contributions around each saddle point are generated from the one-loop determinant with the help of the differential equations obeyed by the generating function. The transseries are constructed by summing up the contributions from all the relevant saddle points, which we identify by determining the intersection numbers between the dual thimbles and the original path integration contour. We confirm that the Borel ambiguities of the perturbation series are canceled by the non-perturbative ambiguities originating from the discontinuous jumps of the intersection numbers. The transseries computed in the path-integral formalism agrees with the exact generating function, whose explicit form can be obtained in the operator formalism thanks to the integrable nature of the model. This agreement indicates the non-perturbative completeness of the transseries obtained by the semi-classical expansion of the path integral based on the Lefschetz thimble method.

Relations among topological solitons

We clarify relations among topological solitons in various dimensions: a domain wall, non-Abelian vortex, magnetic monopole and Yang-Mills instanton, together with a (non-Abelian) sine-Gordon soliton, baby Skyrmion (lump) and Skyrmion. We construct a composite configuration consisting of a domain wall, vortex, magnetic monopole and Yang-Mills instanton (wall-vortex-monopole-instanton) using the effective theory technique or moduli approximation. Removing some solitons from such a composite, we obtain all possible composite solitons in the form of solitons within a soliton, including all the previously known configurations, yielding relations among topological solitons.

Core structures of vortices in Ginzburg-Landau theory for neutron $^3P_2$ superfluids

We investigate vortex solutions in the Ginzburg-Landau theory for neutron $^3P_2$ superfluids relevant for neutron star cores in which neutron pairs possess the total angular momentum $J=2$ with spin-triplet and $P$ wave, in the presence of the magnetic field parallel to the angular momentum of vortices. The ground state is known to be in the uniaxial nematic (UN) phase in the absence of magnetic field, while it is in the $D_2$ ($D_4$) biaxial nematic (BN) phase in the presence of the magnetic field below (above) the critical value. We find that a singly quantized vortex always splits into two half-quantized non-Abelian vortices connected by soliton(s) as a vortex molecule with any strength of the magnetic field. In the UN phase, two half-quantized vortices with ferromagnetic cores are connected by a linear soliton with the $D_4$ BN order. In the $D_2$ ($D_4$) BN phase, two half-quantized vortices with cyclic cores are connected by three linear solitons with the $D_4$ ($D_2$) BN order. The energy of the vortex molecule monotonically increases and the distance between the two half-quantized vortices decreases with the magnetic field increases, except for a discontinuously increasing jump of the distance at the critical magnetic field. We also construct an isolated half-quantized non-Abelian vortex in the $D_4$ BN phase.

Reducing the O(3) model as an effective field theory

We consider the O(3) or CP(1) nonlinear sigma model as an effective field theory in a derivative expansion, with the most general Lagrangian that obeys O(3), parity and Lorentz symmetry. We work out the complete list of possible operators (terms) in the Lagrangian and eliminate as many as possible using integrations by parts. We further show at the four-derivative level, that the theory can be shown to avoid the Ostrogradsky instability, because the dependence on the d'Alembertian operator or so-called box, can be eliminated by a field redefinition. Going to the six-derivative order in the derivative expansion, we show that this can no longer be done, unless we are willing to sacrifice Lorentz invariance. By doing so, we can eliminate all dependence on double time derivatives and hence the Ostrogradsky instability or ghost, however, we unveil a remaining dynamical instability that takes the form either as a spiral instability or a runaway instability and estimate the critical field norm, at which the instability sets off.

Topological axion electrodynamics and 4-group symmetry

We study higher-form symmetries and a higher group in the low energy limit of a $(3+1)$-dimensional axion electrodynamics with a massive axion and a massive photon. A topological field theory describing topological excitations with the axion-photon coupling, which we call a topological axion electrodynamics, is obtained in the low energy limit. Higher-form symmetries of the topological axion electrodynamics are specified by equations of motion and Bianchi identities. We find that there are induced anyons on the intersections of symmetry generators. By a link of worldlines of the anyons, we show that the worldvolume of an axionic domain wall is topologically ordered. We further specify the underlying mathematical structure elegantly describing all salient features of the theory to be a 4-group.

Stable $Z$-strings with topological polarization in two Higgs doublet model

We find that a $Z$-string is stable in a wide range of parameter space of the two Higgs doublet model due to a split into a pair of two topological $Z$-strings with fractional $Z$ fluxes. This configuration, a bound state of the two strings connected by a domain wall, is called a vortex molecule. Although the vortex molecule has no net topological charge, the locally induced topological charge density is polarized, namely distributed positively around one constituent string and negatively around the other constituent string, leading to the stability of the molecule. We numerically show that the vortex molecule is indeed a stable solution of the equation of motions in a much wider parameter space of the model than the usual axially symmetric $Z$-string in the Standard Model and the two Higgs doublet model, although it is not the case for experimental values of the parameters.

Exact Ground States and Domain Walls in One Dimensional Chiral Magnets

We determine exactly the phase structure of a chiral magnet in one spatial dimension with the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction and a potential that is a function of the third component of the magnetization vector, $n_3$, with a Zeeman (linear with the coefficient $B$) term and an anisotropy (quadratic with the coefficient $A$) term, constrained so that $2A\leq \vert B\vert$. For large values of potential parameters $A$ and $B$, the system is in one of the ferromagnetic phases, whereas it is in the spiral phase for small values. In the spiral phase we find a continuum of spiral solutions, which are one-dimensionally modulated solutions with various periods. The ground state is determined as the spiral solution with the lowest average energy density. As the phase boundary approaches, the period of the lowest energy spiral solution diverges, and the spiral solutions become domain wall solutions with zero energy at the boundary. The energy of the domain wall solutions is positive in the homogeneous phase region, but is negative in the spiral phase region, signaling the instability of the homogeneous (ferromagnetic) state. The order of the phase transition between spiral and homogeneous phases and between polarized ($n_3=\pm 1$) and canted ($n_3\not=\pm 1$) ferromagnetic phases is found to be second order.

Resurgence and semiclassical expansion in two-dimensional large-$N$ sigma models

The resurgence structure of the 2d $O(N)$ sigma model at large $N$ is studied with a focus on an IR momentum cutoff scale $a$ that regularizes IR singularities in the semiclassical expansion. Transseries expressions for condensates and correlators are derived as series of the dynamical scale $Λ$ (nonperturbative exponential) and coupling $λ_μ$ renormalized at the momentum scale $μ$. While there is no ambiguity when $a > Λ$, we find for $a < Λ$ that the nonperturbative sectors have new imaginary ambiguities besides the well-known renormalon ambiguity in the perturbative sector. These ambiguities arise as a result of an analytic continuation of transseries coefficients to small values of the IR cutoff $a$ below the dynamical scale $Λ$. We find that the imaginary ambiguities are cancelled each other when we take all of them into account. By comparing the semiclassical expansion with the transseries for the exact large-$N$ result, we find that some ambiguities vanish in the $a \rightarrow 0$ limit and hence the resurgence structure changes when going from the semiclassical expansion to the exact result with no IR cutoff. An application of our approach to the ${\mathbb C}P^{N-1}$ sigma model is also discussed. We find in the compactified model with the ${\mathbb Z}_N$ twisted boundary condition that the resurgence structure changes discontinuously as the compactification radius is varied.

Fractional Skyrmion molecules in a $\mathbb{C}P^{N-1}$ model

We study fractional Skyrmions in a $\mathbb{C}P^2$ baby Skyrme model with a generalization of the easy-plane potential. By numerical methods, we find stable, metastable, and unstable solutions taking the shapes of molecules. Various solutions possess discrete symmetries, and the origin of those symmetries are traced back to congruencies of the fields in homogeneous coordinates on $\mathbb{C}P^2$.

Phases of rotating baryonic matter: non-Abelian chiral soliton lattices, antiferro-isospin chains, and ferri/ferromagnetic magnetization

A chiral soliton lattice (CSL), proposed as the ground state of rotating baryonic matter at a finite density, is shown to be unstable in a large parameter region for two flavors owing to pion condensations, leading to two types of non-Abelian (NA) CSL phases (dimer and deconfining phases). We determine the phase diagram where the dimer phase meets the other phases and QCD vacuum at three tricritical points. The critical angular velocity for NA-CSLs is lower than the $η$-CSL. Each NA soliton carries an isospin, and an antiferro-isospin chain is formed leading to gapless isospinons. The anomalous coupling to the magnetic field provides the NA-CSL ($η$-CSL) with a ferrimagnetic (ferromagnetic) magnetization.
