Ghostbusters in $f(R)$ supergravity

$f(R)$ supergravity is known to contain a ghost mode associated with higher-derivative terms if it contains $R^n$ with $n$ greater than two.We remove the ghost in $f(R)$ supergravity by introducing auxiliary gauge field to absorb the ghost. We dub this method as the ghostbuster mechanism~\cite{Fujimori:2016udq}. We show that the mechanism removes the ghost supermultiplet but also terms including $R^n$ with $n\geq3$, after integrating out auxiliary degrees of freedom. For pure supergravity case, there appears an instability in the resultant scalar potential. We then show that the instability of the scalar potential can be cured by introducing matter couplings in such a way that the system has a stable potential.

Higher-order Skyrme hair of black holes

Higher-order derivative terms are considered as replacement for the Skyrme term in an Einstein-Skyrme-like model in order to pinpoint which properties are necessary for a black hole to possess stable static scalar hair. We find two new models able to support stable black hole hair in the limit of the Skyrme term being turned off. They contain 8 and 12 derivatives, respectively, and are roughly the Skyrme-term squared and the so-called BPS-Skyrme-term squared. In the twelfth-order model we find that the lower branches, which are normally unstable, become stable in the limit where the Skyrme term is turned off. We check this claim with a linear stability analysis. Finally, we find for a certain range of the gravitational coupling and horizon radius, that the twelfth-order model contains 4 solutions as opposed to 2. More surprisingly, the lowest part of the would-be unstable branch turns out to be the stable one of the 4 solutions.

Massive Nambu-Goldstone Fermions and Bosons for Non-relativistic Superconformal Symmetry: Jackiw-Pi Vortices in a Trap

We discuss a supersymmetric extension of a non-relativistic Chern-Simons matter theory, known as the SUSY Jackiw-Pi model, in a harmonic trap. We show that the non-relativistic version of the superconformal symmetry, called the super-Schrödinger symmetry, is not spoiled by an external field including the harmonic potential. It survives as a modified symmetry whose generators have explicit time dependences determined by the strength of the trap, the rotation velocity of the system and the fermion number chemical potential. We construct 1/3 BPS states of trapped Jackiw-Pi vortices preserving a part of the modified superconformal symmetry and discuss fluctuations around static BPS configurations. In addition to the bosonic massive Nambu-Goldstone modes, we find that there exist massive Nambu-Goldstone fermions associated with broken modified super-Schrödinger symmetry generators. Furthermore, we find that eigenmodes form supermultiplets of a modified supersymmetry preserved by the static BPS backgrounds. As a consequence of the modified supersymmetry, infinite towers of explicit spectra can be found for eigenmodes correspond- ing to bosonic and fermionic lowest Landau levels.

Topological Defects in the Georgi-Machacek Model

We study topological defects in the Georgi-Machacek model in a hierarchical symmetry breaking in which extra triplets acquire vacuum expectation values before the doublet. We find a possibility of topologically stable non-Abelian domain walls and non-Abelian flux tubes (vortices) in this model. In the limit of the vanishing $U(1)_{\rm Y}$ gauge coupling in which the custodial symmetry becomes exact, the presence of a vortex spontaneously breaks the custodial symmetry, giving rise to $S^2$ Nambu-Goldstone (NG) modes localized around the vortex corresponding to non-Abelian fluxes. Vortices are continuously degenerated by these degrees of freedom, thereby called non-Abelian. By taking into account the $U(1)_{\rm Y}$ gauge coupling, the custodial symmetry is explicitly broken, the NG modes are lifted, and all non-Abelian vortices fall into a topologically stable $Z$-string. This is in contrast to the SM in which $Z$-strings are non-topological and are unstable in the realistic parameter region.Non-Abelian domain walls also break the custodial symmetry and are accompanied by localized $S^2$ NG modes. Finally, we discuss the existence of domain wall solutions bounded by flux tubes, where their $S^2$ NG modes match. The domain walls may quantum mechanically decay by creating a hole bounded by a flux tube loop, and would be cosmologically safe. Gravitational waves produced from unstable domain walls could be detected by future experiments

Self-Consistent Large-$N$ Analytical Solutions of Inhomogneous Condensates in Quantum ${\mathbb C}P^{N-1}$ Model

We give, for the first time, self-consistent large-$N$ analytical solutions of inhomogeneous condensates in the quantum ${\mathbb C}P^{N-1}$ model in the large-$N$ limit. We find a map from a set of gap equations of the ${\mathbb C}P^{N-1}$ model to those of the Gross-Neveu (GN) model (or the gap equation and the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation), which enables us to find the self-consistent solutions. We find that the Higgs field of the ${\mathbb C}P^{N-1}$ model is given as a zero mode of solutions of the GN model, and consequently only topologically nontrivial solutions of the GN model yield nontrivial solutions of the ${\mathbb C}P^{N-1}$ model. A stable single soliton is constructed from an anti-kink of the GN model and has a broken (Higgs) phase inside its core,in which ${\mathbb C}P^{N-1}$ modes are localized, with a symmetric (confining) phase outside. We further find a stable periodic soliton lattice constructed from a real kink crystal in the GN model, while the Ablowitz-Kaup-Newell-Segur hierarchy yields multiple solitons at arbitrary separations.

Supersymmetry in Closed Chains of Coupled Majorana Modes

We consider a closed chain of even number of Majorana zero modes with nearest-neighbour couplings which are different site by site generically, thus no any crystal symmetry. Instead, we demonstrate the possibility of an emergent supersymmetry (SUSY), which is accompanied by gapless Fermionic excitations. In particular, the condition can be easily satisfied by tuning only one coupling, regardless of how many other couplings are there. Such a system can be realized by four Majorana modes on two parallel Majorana nanowires with their ends connected by Josephson junctions and bodies connected by an external superconducting ring. By tuning the Josephson couplings with a magnetic flux $Φ$ through the ring, we get the gapless excitations at $Φ_{SUSY}=\pm fΦ_0$ with $Φ_0= hc/2e$, which is signaled by a zero-bias conductance peak in tunneling conductance. We find this $f$ generally a fractional number and oscillating with increasing Zeeman fields that parallel to the nanowires, which provide a unique experimental signature for the existence of Majorana modes.

Supersymmetry Breaking in Spatially Modulated Vacua

We study spontaneous supersymmetry breaking in spatially modulated stable or meta-stable vacua in supersymmetric field theories. Such spatial modulation can be realized in a higher derivative chiral model for which vacuum energies are either positive, negative or zero, depending on the model parameters. There appears a Nambu-Goldstone boson associated with the spontaneously breaking of the translational and $U(1)$ symmetries without the quadratic kinetic term and with a quartic derivative term in the modulated direction, and a gapless Higgs mode. We show that there appears a Goldstino associated with the supersymmetry breaking at a meta-stable vacuum, where energy is positive, while it becomes a fermionic ghost in the negative energy vacuum, and zero norm state and disappears from the physical sector in the zero energy vacuum.

Collective excitations of a quantized vortex in $^3P_2$ superfluids in neutron stars

We discuss collective excitations (both fundamental and solitonic excitations) of quantized superfluid vortices in neutron $^3P_2$ superfluids, which likely exist in high density neutron matter such as neutron stars. Besides the well-known Kelvin modes (translational zero modes), we find a gapfull mode whose low-energy description takes the simple form of a double sine-Gordon model. The associated kink solution and its effects on spontaneous magnetization inside the vortex core are analyzed in detail.

Conformal symmetry of trapped Bose-Einstein condensates and massive Nambu-Goldstone modes

The Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) or nonlinear Schrödinger equation relevant to ultracold atomic gaseous Bose-Einstein condensates possess a modified Schrödinger symmetry in two spatial dimensions, in the presence of a harmonic trapping potential, an (artificial) constant magnetic field (or rotation) and an electric field of a quadratic electrostatic potential. We find that a variance and a center of a trapped gas with or without a vorticity can be regarded as massive Nambu-Goldstone (NG) modes associated with spontaneous breaking of the modified Schrödinger symmetry. We show that the Noether theorem for the modified Schrödinger symmetry gives universal equations of motion which describe exact time-evolutions of the trapped gases such as a harmonic oscillation, a cyclotron motion and a breathing oscillation with frequencies determined by the symmetry independently of the details of the system. We further construct an exact effective action for all the NG modes.

Topology and symmetry of surface Majorana arcs in cyclic superconductors

We study the topology and symmetry of surface Majorana arcs in superconductors with nonunitary "cyclic" pairing. Cyclic $p$-wave pairing may be realized in a cubic or tetrahedral crystal, while it is a candidate for the interior $^3P_2$ superfluids of neutron stars. The cyclic state is an admixture of full gap and nodal gap with eight Weyl points and the low-energy physics is governed by itinerant Majorana fermions. We here show the evolution of surface states from Majorana cone to Majorana arcs under rotation of surface orientation. The Majorana cone is protected solely by an accidental spin rotation symmetry and fragile against spin-orbit coupling, while the arcs are attributed to two topological invariants: the first Chern number and one-dimensional winding number. Lastly, we discuss how topologically protected surface states inherent to the nonunitary cyclic pairing can be captured from surface probes in candidate compounds, such as U$_{1-x}$Th$_{x}$Be$_{13}$. We examine tunneling conductance spectra for two competitive scenarios in U$_{1-x}$Th$_{x}$Be$_{13}$---the degenerate $E_u$ scenario and the accidental scenario.

Ghost-free vector superfield actions in supersymmetric higher-derivative theories

We systematically construct ghost-free higher-derivative actions of Abelian vector supermultiplets in four-dimensional ${\cal N}=1$ global supersymmetric theories. After giving a simple example which illustrates that a naive introduction of a higher-derivative term gives rise to a ghost, we discuss possible building blocks for a ghost-free action and explicitly show that their bosonic parts have no ghost mode and the auxiliary field $\boldsymbol{D}$ does not propagate. Higher-derivative terms yield higher powers of the auxiliary field $\boldsymbol{D}$ in the actions, and the D-term equations of motion consequently admit multiple solutions in general. We confirm that the well-known supersymmetric Dirac-Born-Infeld action falls into this class. We further give another example in which the standard quadratic kinetic term (Maxwell term) is corrected by a quartic term of the field strength. We also discuss possible couplings to matter fields and a deformed D-term potential.

BPS Alice strings

When a charged particle encircles around an Alice string, it changes the sign of the electric charge. In this paper we find a BPS-saturated Alice string in $U(1)\times SO(3)$ gauge theory with charged complex scalar fields belonging to the vector representation. After performing BPS completion we solve the BPS equations numerically. We further embed the Alice string into an ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetric gauge theory to show that it is half BPS.

A higher-order Skyrme model

We propose a higher-order Skyrme model with derivative terms of eighth, tenth and twelfth order. Our construction yields simple and easy-to-interpret higher-order Lagrangians. We first show that a Skyrmion with higher-order terms proposed by Marleau has an instability in the form of a baby-Skyrmion string, while the static energies of our construction are positive definite, implying stability against time-independent perturbations. However, we also find that the Hamiltonians of our construction possess two kinds of dynamical instabilities, which may indicate the instability with respect to time-dependent perturbations. Different from the well-known Ostrogradsky instability, the instabilities that we find are intrinsically of nonlinear nature and also due to the fact that even powers of the inverse metric gives a ghost-like higher-order kinetic-like term. The vacuum state is, however, stable. Finally, we show that at sufficiently low energies, our Hamiltonians in the simplest cases, are stable against time-dependent perturbations.

Two-dimensional Schrödinger symmetry and three-dimensional breathers and Kelvin-ripple complexes as quasi-massive-Nambu-Goldstone modes

Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) confined in a two-dimensional (2D) harmonic trap are known to possess a hidden 2D Schrödinger symmetry, that is, the Schrödinger symmetry modified by a trapping potential. Spontaneous breaking of this symmetry gives rise to a breathing motion of the BEC, whose oscillation frequency is robustly determined by the strength of the harmonic trap. In this paper, we demonstrate that the concept of the 2D Schrödinger symmetry can be applied to predict the nature of three dimensional (3D) collective modes propagating along a condensate confined in an elongated trap. We find three kinds of collective modes whose existence is robustly ensured by the Schrödinger symmetry, which are physically interpreted as one breather mode and two Kelvin-ripple complex modes, i.e., composite modes in which the vortex core and the condensate surface oscillate interactively. We provide analytical expressions for the dispersion relations (energy-momentum relation) of these modes using the Bogoliubov theory [D. A. Takahashi and M. Nitta, Ann. Phys. 354, 101 (2015)]. Furthermore, we point out that these modes can be interpreted as "quasi-massive-Nambu-Goldstone (NG) modes", that is, they have the properties of both quasi-NG and massive NG modes: quasi-NG modes appear when a symmetry of a part of a Lagrangian, which is not a symmetry of full a Lagrangian, is spontaneously broken, while massive NG modes appear when a modified symmetry is spontaneously broken.

Resurgence Structure to All Orders of Multi-bions in Deformed SUSY Quantum Mechanics

We investigate the resurgence structure in quantum mechanical models originating in 2d non-linear sigma models with emphasis on nearly supersymmetric and quasi-exactly solvable parameter regimes. By expanding the ground state energy in powers of a supersymmetry-breaking deformation parameter $δε$, we derive exact results for the expansion coefficients. In the class of models described by real multiplets, the ${\mathcal O}(δε)$ ground state energy has a non-Borel summable asymptotic series, which gives rise to imaginary ambiguities leading to rich resurgence structure. We discuss the sine-Gordon quantum mechanics (QM) as an example and show that the semiclassical contributions from complex multi-bion solutions correctly reproduce the corresponding part in the exact result including the imaginary ambiguities. As a typical model described by chiral multiplets, we discuss the $\mathbb C P^{N-1}$ QM and show that the exact ${\mathcal O}(δε)$ ground state energy can be completely reconstructed from the semiclassical multi-bion contributions. Although the ${\mathcal O}(δε)$ ground state energy has trivial resurgence structure, a simple but rich resurgence structure appears at ${\mathcal O}(δε^{2})$. We show the complete cancellation between the ${\mathcal O}(δε^{2})$ imaginary ambiguities arising from the non-Borel summable perturbation series and those in the semiclassical contributions of $N-1$ complex bion solutions. We also discuss the resurgence structure of a squashed ${\mathbb C}P^1$ QM.

Sign Flip in the Casimir Force for Interacting Fermion Systems

In this work we consider a fermionic chain of finite length $\ell$. Fermions are allowed to interact and are forced to obey boundary conditions, thus altering the process of condensation. Our goal is to explore how this affects the quantum vacuum energy for this system. We approach this problem by using a self-consistent method and observe a nontrivial behavior in the Casimir force, displaying a switch from an attractive to a repulsive regime. This flip stems from the competition between the attractive contribution from the usual fermionic Casimir effect and a repulsive one coming from the condensate.

The effective action of a BPS Alice string

Recently a BPS Alice string has been found in a $U(1)\times SU(2)$ gauge theory coupled with a charged complex adjoint scalar field arXiv:1703.08971. It is a half BPS state preserving a half of supercharges when embedded into a supersymmetric gauge theory. In this paper, we study zero modes of a BPS Alice string. After presenting $U(1)$ and translational zero modes, we construct the effective action of these modes. In contrast to previous analysis of the conventional Alice string for which only large distance behaviors are known, we can perform calculation exactly in the full space thanks to BPS properties.

Stable non-Abelian semi-superfluid vortices in dense QCD

Color superconductivity is expected to be formed in high density quark matter where color symmetry is spontaneously broken in the presence of di-quark condensate. Stable non-Abelian vortices or color magnetic flux tubes exist in the color-flavor locked phase at asymptotically high density. $\mathbb{C}P^2$ Nambu-Goldstone(NG) bosons and Majorana fermions belonging to the triplet representation are localized around a non-Abelian vortex. We discuss the zero mode analysis and the low-energy effective world sheet theory of a non-Abelian vortex. We determine the interactions of these bosonic and fermionic modes by using the nonlinear realization method. We also discuss the Aharanov-Bohm (AB) phases of charged particles, such as, electrons, muons, and color-flavor locked mesons made of tetra-quarks encircling around a non-Abelian vortex in the presence of electro-magnetic fields. This is a review based on our recent works arXiv:1602.01677, arXiv:1512.06603, arXiv:1612.09419.
