Quark Number Susceptibility, Thermodynamic Sum Rule, and Hard Thermal Loop Approximation

The quark number susceptibility, associated with the conserved quark number density, is closely related to the baryon and charge fluctuations in the quark-gluon plasma, which might serve as signature for the quark-gluon plasma formation in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions. Beside QCD lattice simulations, the quark number susceptibility has been calculated recently using a resummed perturbation theory (Hard Thermal Loop resummation). In the present work we show, based on general arguments, that the computation of this quantity neglecting Hard Thermal Loop vertices contradicts the Ward identity and violates the thermodynamic sum rule following from the quark number conservation. We further show that the Hard Thermal Loop perturbation theory is consistent with the thermodynamic sum rule.

Chiral Susceptibility in Hard Thermal Loop Approximation

The static and dynamic chiral susceptibilities in the quark-gluon plasma are calculated within the lowest order perturbative QCD at finite temperature and the Hard Thermal Loop resummation technique using an effective quark propagator. After regularisation of ultraviolet divergences, the Hard Thermal Loop results are compared to QCD lattice simulations.

Quark Number Susceptibility in Hard Thermal Loop Approximation

We calculate the quark number susceptibility in the deconfined phase of QCD using the hard thermal loop (HTL) approximation for the quark propagator. This improved perturbation theory takes into account important medium effects such as thermal quark masses and Landau damping in the quark-gluon plasma. We explicitly show that the Landau damping part in the quark propagator for spacelike quark momenta does not contribute to the quark number susceptibility due to the quark number conservation. We find that the quark number susceptibility only due to the collective quark modes deviates from that of free one around the critical temperature but approaches free results at infinite temperature limit. The results are in conformity with recent lattice calculations.

Can Van Hove singularities be observed in relativistic heavy-ion collisions ?

Based on general arguments the in-medium quark propagator in a quark-gluon plasma leads to a quark dispersion relation consisting of two branches, of which one exhibits a minimum at some finite momentum. This results in a vanishing group velocity for collective quark modes. Important quantities such as the production rate of low mass lepton pairs and mesonic correlators depend inversely on this group velocity. Therefore these quantities, which follow from self energy diagrams containing a quark loop, are strongly affected by Van Hove singularities (peaks and gaps). If these sharp structures could be observed in relativistic heavy-ion collisions it would reveal the physical picture of the QGP as a gas of quasiparticles.

Evolution of strangeness in equilibrating and expanding quark-gluon plasma

We evaluate the strangeness production from equilibrating and transversely expanding quark gluon plasma which may be created in the wake of relativistic heavy ion collisions. We consider boost invariant longitudinal and cylindrically symmetric transverse expansion of a gluon dominated partonic plasma, which is in local thermal equilibrium. Initial conditions obtained from the self screened parton cascade model are used. We empirically find that the final extent of the partonic equilibration rises almost linearly with the square of the initial energy density. This along with the corresponding variation with the number of participants may help us distinguish between various models of parton production.

Bremsstrahlung from an Equilibrating Quark-Gluon Plasma

The photon production rate from a chemically equilibrating quark-gluon plasma likely to be produced at RHIC (BNL) and LHC (CERN) energies is estimated taking into account bremsstrahlung. The plasma is assumed to be in local thermal equilibrium, but with a phase space distribution that deviates from the Fermi or Bose distribution by space-time dependent factors (fugacities). The photon spectrum is obtained by integrating the photon rate over the space-time history of the plasma, adopting a boost invariant cylindrically symmetric transverse expansion of the system with different nuclear profile functions. Initial conditions obtained from a self-screened parton cascade calculation and, for comparison, from the HIJING model are used. Compared to an equilibrated plasma at the same initial energy density, taken from the self-screened parton cascade, a moderate suppression of the photon yield by a factor of one to five depending on the collision energy and the photon momentum is observed. The individual contributions to the photon production, however, are completely different in the both scenarios.

Non-Perturbative Dilepton Production from a Quark-Gluon Plasma

The dilepton production rate from the quark-gluon plasma is calculated from the imaginary part of the photon self energy using a quark propagator that contains the gluon condensate. The low mass dilepton rate obtained in this way exhibits interesting structures (peaks and gaps), which might be observable at RHIC and LHC.
