The asymmetric quantum Rabi model and generalised Pöschl-Teller potentials

Starting with the Gaudin-like Bethe ansatz equations associated with the quasi-exactly solved (QES) exceptional points of the asymmetric quantum Rabi model (AQRM) a spectral equivalence is established with QES hyperbolic Schrödinger potentials on the line. This leads to particular QES Pöschl-Teller potentials. The complete spectral equivalence is then established between the AQRM and generalised Pöschl-Teller potentials. This result extends a previous mapping between the symmetric quantum Rabi model and a QES Pöschl-Teller potential. The complete spectral equivalence between the two systems suggests that the physics of the generalised Pöschl-Teller potentials may also be explored in experimental realisations of the quantum Rabi model.

FFLO correlation and free fluids in the one-dimensional attractive Hubbard model

In this Rapid Communication we show that low energy macroscopic properties of the one-dimensional (1D) attractive Hubbard model exhibit two fluids of bound pairs and of unpaired fermions. Using the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz equations of the model, we first determine the low temperature phase diagram and analytically calculate the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) pairing correlation function for the partially-polarized phase. We then show that for such a FFLO-like state in the low density regime the effective chemical potentials of bound pairs and unpaired fermions behave like two free fluids. Consequently, the susceptibility, compressibility and specific heat obey simple additivity rules, indicating the `free' particle nature of interacting fermions on a 1D lattice. In contrast to the continuum Fermi gases, the correlation critical exponents and thermodynamics of the attractive Hubbard model essentially depend on two lattice interacting parameters. Finally, we study scaling functions, the Wilson ratio and susceptibility which provide universal macroscopic properties/dimensionless constants of interacting fermions at low energy.

Universal thermodynamics of the one-dimensional attractive Hubbard model

The one-dimensional (1D) Hubbard model, describing electrons on a lattice with an on-site repulsive interaction, provides a paradigm for the physics of quantum many-body phenomena. Here by solving the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz equations we study the universal thermodynamics, quantum criticality and magnetism of the 1D attractive Hubbard model. We show that the compressibility and the susceptibility of the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO)-like state obey simple additivity rules at low temperatures, indicating an existence of two free quantum fluids. The magnetic properties, such as magnetization and susceptibility, reveal three physical regions: quantum fluids at low temperatures, a non-Fermi liquid at high temperatures and the quantum fluid to non-Fermi liquid crossover in between. The lattice interaction is seen to significantly influence the nature of the FFLO-like state in 1D. Furthermore, we show that the dimensionless Wilson ratio provides an ideal parameter to map out the various phase boundaries and to characterize the two free fluids of the FLLO-like state. The quantum scaling functions for the thermal and magnetic properties yield the same dynamic critical exponent $z=2$ and correlation critical exponent $ν=1/2$ in the quantum critical region whenever a phase transition occurs. Our results provide a rigorous understanding of quantum criticality and free fluids of many-body systems on a 1D lattice.

Energy spectrum and critical exponents of the free parafermion $Z_N$ spin chain

Results are given for the ground state energy and excitation spectrum of a simple $N$-state $Z_N$ spin chain described by free parafermions. The model is non-Hermitian for $N \ge 3$ with a real ground state energy and a complex excitation spectrum. Although having a simpler Hamiltonian than the superintegrable chiral Potts model, the model is seen to share some properties with it, e.g., the specific heat exponent $α=1-2/N$ and the anisotropic correlation length exponents $ν_\parallel =1$ and $ν_\perp=2/N$.

Quantum criticality and universal scaling of strongly attractive spin-imbalanced Fermi gases in a 1D harmonic trap

We investigate thermodynamics and quantum criticality of strongly attractive Fermi gases confined in a one-dimensional (1D) harmonic trap. Finite temperature density profiles, entropy, compressibility and susceptibility of the trapped gas are studied using analytic results for the thermodynamics within the local density approximation. We demonstrate that current experiments are capable of measuring universal Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid physics and quantum criticality of 1D strongly interacting Fermi gases. The results provide insights on recent measurements of key features of the phase diagram of a spin-imbalanced atomic Fermi gas [Liao et al., Nature 467, 567 (2010)] and point to further study of quantum critical phenomena in ultracold atomic Fermi gases.

Realization of effective super Tonks-Girardeau gases via strongly attractive one-dimensional Fermi gases

A significant feature of the one-dimensional super Tonks-Girardeau gas is its metastable gas-like state with a stronger Fermi-like pressure than for free fermions which prevents a collapse of atoms. This naturally suggests a way to search for such strongly correlated behaviour in systems of interacting fermions in one dimension. We thus show that the strongly attractive Fermi gas without polarization can be effectively described by a super Tonks-Girardeau gas composed of bosonic Fermi pairs with attractive pair-pair interaction. A natural description of such super Tonks-Girardeau gases is provided by Haldane generalized exclusion statistics. In particular, we find that they are equivalent to ideal particles obeying more exclusive statistics than Fermi-Dirac statistics.

Extraordinary transition in the two-dimensional O(n) model

The extraordinary transition which occurs in the two-dimensional O(n) model for $n<1$ at sufficiently enhanced surface couplings is studied by conformal perturbation theory about infinite coupling and by finite-size scaling of the spectrum of the transfer matrix of a simple lattice model. Unlike the case of $n\geq1$ in higher dimensions, the surface critical behaviour differs from that occurring when fixed boundary conditions are imposed. In fact, all the surface scaling dimensions are equal to those already found for the ordinary transition, with, however, an interesting reshuffling of the corresponding eigenvalues between different sectors of the transfer matrix.
