Convergence rate to equilibrium for conservative scattering models on the torus: a new tauberian approach

The object of this paper is to provide a new and systematic tauberian approach to quantitative long time behaviour of $C_{0}$-semigroups $\left(\mathcal{V}(t)\right)_{t \geq0}$ in $L^{1}(\mathbb{T}^{d}\times \mathbb{R}^{d})$ governing conservative linear kinetic equations on the torus with general scattering kernel $ {k}(v,v')$ and degenerate (i.e. not bounded away from zero) collision frequency $σ(v)=\int_{\mathbb{R}^{d}} {k}(v',v)m(\mathrm{d} v')$, (with $m(\mathrm{d} v)$ being absolutely continuous with respect to the Lebesgue measure). We show in particular that if $N_{0}$ is the maximal integer $s \geq0$ such that $$\frac{1}{σ(\cdot)}\int_{\mathbb{R}^{d}}k(\cdot,v)σ^{-s}(v)m(\mathrm{d} v) \in L^{\infty}(\mathbb{R}^{d})$$ then, for initial datum $f$ such that $\mathrm{d} s\int_{\mathbb{T}^{d}\times \mathbb{R}^{d}}|f(x,v)|σ^{-N_{0}}(v)\mathrm{d} x m(\mathrm{d} v) <\infty$ it holds $$\left\|\mathcal{V}(t)f-\varrho_{f}Ψ\right\|_{L^{1}}=\dfrac{ε_{f}(t)}{(1+t)^{N_{0}-1}}, \qquad \varrho_{f}:= \int_{\mathbb{R}^{d}}f(x,v)m(\mathrm{d} v)$$ where $Ψ$ is the unique invariant density of $\left(\mathcal{V}(t)\right)_{t \geq0}$ and $\lim_{t\to\infty}ε_{f}(t)=0$. We in particular provide a new criteria of the existence of invariant density. The proof relies on the explicit computation of the time decay of each term of the Dyson-Phillips expansion of $\mathcal{V}(t)$ and on suitable smoothness and integrability properties of the trace on the imaginary axis of Laplace transform of remainders of large order of this Dyson-Phillips expansion. Our construction resorts also on collective compactness arguments and provides various technical results of independent interest. Finally, as a by-product of our analysis, we derive essentially sharp ``subgeometric'' convergence rate for Markov semigroups associated to general transition kernels.

On spectral gaps of growth-fragmentation semigroups in higher moment spaces

We present a general approach to proving the existence of spectral gaps and asynchronous exponential growth for growth-fragmentation semigroups in moment spaces $L^{1}(\mathbb{R}_{+};\ x^{α}dx)$ and $L^{1}(\mathbb{R} _{+};\ \left( 1+x\right) ^{α}dx)$ for unbounded total fragmentation rates and continuous growth rates $r(.)$\ such that $\int_{0}^{+\infty } \frac{1}{r(τ)}dτ=+\infty .\ $The analysis is based on weak compactness tools and Frobenius theory of positive operators and holds provided that $α>\widehat{α}$ for a suitable threshold $\widehat{ α}\geq 1$ that depends on the moment space we consider. A systematic functional analytic construction is provided. Various examples of fragmentation kernels illustrating the theory are given and an open problem is mentioned.

On eventual compactness of collisionless kinetic semigroups with velocities bounded away from zero

In this paper, we consider the long time behaviour of collisionless kinetic equation with stochastic diffuse boundary operators for velocities bounded away from zero. We show that under suitable reasonable conditions, the semigroup is eventually compact. In particular, without any irreducibility assumption, the semigroup converges exponentially to the spectral projection associated to the zero eigenvalue as $t \to \infty.$ This contrasts drastically to the case allowing arbitrarily slow velocities for which the absence of a spectral gap yields at most algebraic rate of convergence to equilibrium. Some open questions are also mentioned.

Convergence Rate To Equilibrium For Collisionless Transport Equations With Diffuse Boundary Operators: A New Tauberian Approach

This paper provides a new tauberian approach to the study of quantitative time asymptotics of collisionless transport semigroups with general diffuse boundary operators. We obtain an (almost) optimal algebraic rate of convergence to equilibrium under very general assumptions on the initial datum and the boundary operator. The rate is prescribed by the maximal gain of integrability that the boundary operator is able to induce. The proof relies on a representation of the collisionless transport semigroups by a (kind of) Dyson-Phillips series and on a fine analysis of the trace on the imaginary axis of Laplace transform of remainders (of large order) of this series. Our construction is systematic and is based on various preliminary results of independent interest.

Spectral theory and time asymptotics of size-structured two-phase population models

This work provides a general spectral analysis of size-structured two-phase population models. Systematic functional analytic results are given. We deal first with the case of finite maximal size. We characterize the irreducibility of the corresponding $L^{1}$ semigroup in terms of properties of the different parameters of the system. We characterize also the spectral gap property of the semigroup. It turns out that the irreducibility of the semigroup implies the existence of the spectral gap. In particular, we provide a general criterion for asynchronous exponential growth. We show also how to deal with time asymptotics in case of lack of irreducibility. Finally, we extend the theory to the case of infinite maximal size.

Invariant density & time asymptotics for collisionless kinetic equations with partly diffuse boundary operators

This paper deals with collisionless transport equations in bounded open domains $Ω\subset \R^{d}$ $(d\geq 2)$ with $\mathcal{C}^{1}$ boundary $\partial Ω$, orthogonally invariant velocity measure $\bm{m}(\d v)$ with support $V\subset \R^{d}$ and stochastic partly diffuse boundary operators $\mathsf{H}$ relating the outgoing and incoming fluxes. Under very general conditions, such equations are governed by stochastic $C_{0}$-semigroups $\left( U_{\mathsf{H}}(t)\right) _{t\geq 0}$ on $% L^{1}(Ω\times V,\d x \otimes \bm{m}(\d v)).$ We give a general criterion of irreducibility of $% \left( U_{\mathsf{H}}(t)\right) _{t\geq 0}$ and we show that, under very natural assumptions, if an invariant density exists then $\left( U_{\mathsf{H}}(t)\right) _{t\geq 0}$ converges strongly (not simply in Cesarò means) to its ergodic projection. We show also that if no invariant density exists then $\left( U_{\mathsf{H}}(t)\right) _{t\geq 0}$ is \emph{sweeping} in the sense that, for any density $φ$, the total mass of $ U_{\mathsf{H}}(t)φ$ concentrates near suitable sets of zero measure as $ t\rightarrow +\infty .$ We show also a general weak compactness theorem of interest for the existence of invariant densities. This theorem is based on several results on smoothness and transversality of the dynamical flow associated to $\left( U_{\mathsf{H}}(t)\right) _{t\geq 0}.$

Rates of convergence to equilibrium for collisionless kinetic equations in slab geometry

This work deals with free transport equations with partly diffuse stochastic boundary operators in slab geometry. Such equations are governed by stochastic semigroups in $L^{1}$ spaces$.\ $We prove convergence to equilibrium at the rate $O\left( t^{-\frac{k}{2(k+1)+1}}\right) \ (t\rightarrow +\infty )$ for $L^{1}$ initial data $g$ in a suitable subspace of the domain of the generator $T$ where $k\in \mathbb{N}$ depends on the properties of the boundary operators near the tangential velocities to the slab. This result is derived from a quantified version of Ingham's tauberian theorem by showing that $F_{g}(s):=\lim_{\varepsilon \rightarrow 0_{+}}\left( is+\varepsilon -T\right) ^{-1}g$ exists as a $C^{k}$ function on $\mathbb{R}\backslash \left\{ 0\right\} $ such that $\ \left\| \frac{d^{j}}{ds^{j}}F_{g}(s)\right\| \leq \frac{C}{| s| ^{2(j+1)}}$ near $s=0$ and bounded as $|s| \rightarrow \infty \ \ \left(0\leq j\leq k\right).$ Various preliminary results of independent interest are given and some related open problems are pointed out.

Convergence to equilibrium for linear spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equation with hard and soft potentials: a semigroup approach in $L^1$-spaces

We investigate the large time behavior of solutions to the spatially homogeneous linear Boltzmann equation from a semigroup viewpoint. Our analysis is performed in some (weighted) $L^{1}$-spaces. We deal with both the cases of hard and soft potentials (with angular cut-off). For hard potentials, we provide a new proof of the fact that, in weighted $L^{1}$-spaces with exponential or algebraic weights, the solutions converge exponentially fast towards equilibrium. Our approach uses weak-compactness arguments combined with recent results of the second author on positive semigroups in $L^{1}$-spaces. For soft potentials, in $L^{1}$-spaces, we exploits the convergence to ergodic projection for perturbed substochastic semigroup to show that, for very general initial datum, solutions to the linear Boltzmann equation converges to equilibrium in large time. Moreover, for a large class of initial data, we also prove that the convergence rate is at least algebraic. Notice that, for soft potentials, no exponential rate of convergence is expected because of the absence of spectral gap.

Non-autonomous Honesty theory in abstract state spaces with applications to linear kinetic equations

We provide a honesty theory of substochastic evolution families in real abstract state space, extending to an non-autonomous setting the result obtained for $C_0$-semigroups in our recent contribution \textit{[On perturbed substochastic semigroups in abstract state spaces, \textit{Z. Anal. Anwend.} \textbf{30}, 457--495, 2011]}. The link with the honesty theory of perturbed substochastic semigroups is established. Several applications to non-autonomous linear kinetic equations (linear Boltzmann equation and fragmentation equation) are provided.

On perturbed substochastic semigroups in abstract state spaces

The object of this paper is twofold: In the first part, we unify and extend the recent developments on honesty theory of perturbed substochastic semigroups (on $L^{1}(μ)$-spaces or noncommutative $L^{1}$ spaces) to general state spaces; this allows us to capture for instance a honesty theory in preduals of abstract von Neumann algebras or subspaces of duals of abstract $C^{\ast }$-algebras. In the second part of the paper, we provide another honesty theory (a semigroup-perturbation approach) independent of the previous resolvent-perturbation approach and show the equivalence of the two approaches. This second viewpoint on honesty is new even in $L^{1}(μ)$ spaces. Several fine properties of Dyson-Phillips expansions are given and a classical generation theorem by T. Kato is revisited.
