The extreme statistics of some noncolliding Brownian processes

We consider certain noncolliding interacting particle systems driven by Brownian noise. A key example is drifted Brownian motions conditioned not to intersect and related models of eigenvalues of Hermitian random matrices. We establish limit theorems for the extremal particle. We find: (i) the scaling limit of the largest eigenvalue of Brownian motion over Hermitian, positive-definite matrices, (ii) Airy process limit for the largest eigenvalue of Dyson's Brownian motion for GUE started from generic initial conditions, and (iii) a Fredholm determinant formula for the maximum of the top path among noncolliding Brownian bridges and, as a byproduct, a new formula for the law of largest eigenvalue in a particular Laguerre Orthogonal Ensemble as well as for a related point-to-line last passage percolation model.

Revisiting the temporal law in KPZ random growth

This article studies the temporal law of the KPZ fixed point. For the stationary geometry, we find the two-time law, which extends the single time law due to Baik-Rains and Ferrari-Spohn. For the droplet geometry, we find a relatively simpler formula for the multi-time law compared to a previous formula of Johansson and the author. These formulas are derived as the scaling limit of corresponding multi-time formulas for geometric last passage percolation.

The directed landscape seen from its trees

A basic question about the directed landscape is how much of it can be reconstructed simply by knowing the shapes of its geodesics. We prove that the directed landscape can be reconstructed from the shapes of its semi-infinite geodesics. In order to show this result, we make use of the Busemann process of the directed landscape together with a novel ``coordinate system" and ``differential distance" to capture the behaviour of semi-infinite geodesics.

On the duality between particles and polymers

We explore the connection between tasep-like interacting particle systems and last passage percolation type polymer models, focusing on three models: Geometric, Exponential and Brownian last passage percolation and their associated tasep particle systems. We explain how formulas for certain natural observables in last passage percolation translate to formulas for tasep, by going through a notion of "duality". In turn, we obtain determinantal formulas for last passage percolation with a deterministic boundary and for tasep with a deterministic first particle trajectory.

Infinite geodesics, competition interfaces and the second class particle in the scaling limit

We establish fundamental properties of infinite geodesics and competition interfaces in the directed landscape. We construct infinite geodesics in the directed landscape, establish their uniqueness and coalescence, and define Busemann functions. We then define competition interfaces in the directed landscape. We prove the second class particle in tasep converges under KPZ scaling to a competition interface. Under suitable conditions, we show the competition interface has an asymptotic direction, analogous to the speed of a second class particle, and determine its law. Moreover, we prove the competition interface has an absolutely continuous law on compact sets with respect to infinite geodesics.

On inhomogeneous polynuclear growth

This article studies the inhomogeneous geometric polynuclear growth model, the distribution of which is related to Schur functions. We explain a method to derive its distribution functions in both space-like and time-like directions, focusing on the two-time distribution. Asymptotics of the two-time distribution in the KPZ-scaling limit is then considered, extending to two times several single-time distributions in the KPZ universality class.

On the Local Geometry of Graphs in Terms of Their Spectra

In this paper we consider the relation between the spectrum and the number of short cycles in large graphs. Suppose $G_1, G_2, G_3, \ldots$ is a sequence of finite and connected graphs that share a common universal cover $T$ and such that the proportion of eigenvalues of $G_n$ that lie within the support of the spectrum of $T$ tends to 1 in the large $n$ limit. This is a weak notion of being Ramanujan. We prove such a sequence of graphs is asymptotically locally tree-like. This is deduced by way of an analogous theorem proved for certain infinite sofic graphs and unimodular networks, which extends results for regular graphs and certain infinite Cayley graphs.

Multi-time distribution in discrete polynuclear growth

We study the multi-time distribution in a discrete polynuclear growth model or, equivalently, in directed last-passage percolation with geometric weights. A formula for the joint multi-time distribution function is derived in the discrete setting. It takes the form of a multiple contour integral of a block Fredholm determinant. The asymptotic multi-time distribution is then computed by taking the appropriate KPZ-scaling limit of this formula. This distribution is expected to be universal for models in the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang universality class.

Random sorting networks: local statistics via random matrix laws

This paper finds the bulk local limit of the swap process of uniformly random sorting networks. The limit object is defined through a deterministic procedure, a local version of the Edelman-Greene algorithm, applied to a two dimensional determinantal point process with explicit kernel. The latter describes the asymptotic joint law near $0$ of the eigenvalues of the corners in the antisymmetric Gaussian Unitary Ensemble. In particular, the limiting law of the first time a given swap appears in a random sorting network is identified with the limiting distribution of the closest to $0$ eigenvalue in the antisymmetric GUE. Moreover, the asymptotic gap, in the bulk, between appearances of a given swap is the Gaudin-Mehta law -- the limiting universal distribution for gaps between eigenvalues of real symmetric random matrices. The proofs rely on the determinantal structure and a double contour integral representation for the kernel of random Poissonized Young tableaux of arbitrary shape.

Geometry of Permutation Limits

This paper initiates a limit theory of permutation valued processes, building on the recent theory of permutons. We apply this to study the asymptotic behaviour of random sorting networks. We prove that the Archimedean path, the conjectured limit of random sorting networks, is the unique path from the identity to the reverse permuton having minimal energy in an appropriate metric. Together with a recent large deviations result (Kotowski, 2016), it implies the Archimedean limit for the model of relaxed random sorting networks.

Suboptimality of local algorithms for a class of max-cut problems

We show that in random $K$-uniform hypergraphs of constant average degree, for even $K \geq 4$, local algorithms defined as factors of i.i.d. can not find nearly maximal cuts, when the average degree is sufficiently large. These algorithms have been used frequently to obtain lower bounds for the max-cut problem on random graphs, but it was not known whether they could be successful in finding nearly maximal cuts. This result follows from the fact that the overlap of any two nearly maximal cuts in such hypergraphs does not take values in a certain non-trivial interval - a phenomenon referred to as the overlap gap property - which is proved by comparing diluted models with large average degree with appropriate fully connected spin glass models and showing the overlap gap property in the latter setting.

TASEP fluctuations with soft-shock initial data

We consider the totally asymmetric simple exclusion process with \emph{soft-shock} initial particle density, which is a step function increasing in the direction of flow and the step size chosen small to admit KPZ scaling. The initial configuration is deterministic and the dynamics create a shock. We prove that the fluctuations of a particle at the macroscopic position of the shock converge to the maximum of two independent GOE Tracy-Widom random variables, which establishes a conjecture of Ferrari and Nejjar. Furthermore, we show the joint fluctuations of particles near the shock are determined by the maximum of two lines described in terms of these two random variables. The microscopic position of the shock is then seen to be their difference. Our proofs rely on determinantal formulae and a novel factorization of the associated kernels.

Brownian motion as limit of the interchange process

We prove that the random empirical measure of appropriately rescaled particle trajectories of the interchange process on path graphs converges weakly to the deterministic measure of stationary Brownian motion on the unit interval. This is a law of large numbers type result for particle trajectories of the interchange process. After the completion of this manuscript we learned about a result of Durrett and Neuhauser that implies this result.

Factor of iid percolation on trees

We study invariant percolation processes on the d-regular tree that are obtained as a factor of an iid process. We show that the density of any factor of iid site percolation process with finite clusters is asymptotically at most (log d)/d as d tends to infinity. This bound is asymptotically optimal as it can be realized by independent sets. One implication of the result is a (1/2)-factor approximation gap, asymptotically in d, for estimating the density of maximal induced forests in locally tree-like d-regular graphs via factor of iid processes.

A lower bound on the spectrum of unimodular networks

Unimodular networks are a generalization of finite graphs in a stochastic sense. We prove a lower bound to the spectral radius of the adjacency operator and of the Markov operator of an unimodular network in terms of its average degree. This allows to prove an Alon-Boppana type bound for the largest eigenvalues in absolute value of large, connected, bounded degree graphs, which generalizes the Alon-Boppana theorem for regular graphs. A key step is establishing a lower bound to the spectral radius of a unimodular tree in terms of its average degree. Similarly, we provide a lower bound on the volume growth rate of an unimodular tree in terms of its average degree.

Percolation with small clusters on random graphs

Consider the problem of determining the maximal induced subgraph in a random $d$-regular graph such that its components remain bounded as the size of the graph becomes arbitrarily large. We show, for asymptotically large $d$, that any such induced subgraph has size density at most $2(\log d)/d$ with high probability. A matching lower bound is known for independent sets. We also prove the analogous result for sparse Erdős-Rényi graphs.

Local algorithms for independent sets are half-optimal

We show that the largest density of factor of i.i.d. independent sets on the d-regular tree is asymptotically at most (log d)/d as d tends to infinity. This matches the lower bound given by previous constructions. It follows that the largest independent sets given by local algorithms on random d-regular graphs have the same asymptotic density. In contrast, the density of the largest independent sets on these graphs is asymptotically 2(log d)/d. We also prove analogous results for Poisson-Galton-Watson trees, which yield bounds for local algorithms on sparse Erdos-Renyi graphs.

On variants of Conway and Conolly's Meta-Fibonacci recursions

We study the recursions $A(n) = A(n-a-A^k(n-b)) + A(A^k(n-b))$ where $a \geq 0$, $b \geq 1$ are integers and the superscript $k$ denotes a $k$-fold composition, and also the recursion $C(n) = C(n-s-C(n-1)) + C(n-s-2-C(n-3))$ where $s \geq 0$ is an integer. We prove that under suitable initial conditions the sequences $A(n)$ and $C(n)$ will be defined for all positive integers, and be monotonic with their forward difference sequences consisting only of 0 and 1. We also show that the sequence generated by the recursion for $A(n)$ with parameters $(k,a,b) = (k,0,1)$, and initial conditions $A(1) = A(2) = 1$, satisfies $A(E_n) = E_{n-1}$ where $E_n$ is defined by $E_n = E_{n-1} + E_{n-k}$ with $E_n = 1$ for $1 \leq n \leq k$.
