Manifestly Gauge-Invariant Cosmological Perturbation Theory from Full Loop Quantum Gravity

We apply the full theory of Loop Quantum Gravity (LQG) to cosmology and present a top-down derivation of gauge-invariant cosmological perturbation theory from quantum gravity. The derivation employs the reduced phase space formulation of LQG and the new discrete path integral formulation defined in arXiv:1910.03763. We demonstrate that in the semiclassical approximation and continuum limit, the result coincides with the existing formulation of gauge-invariant cosmological perturbation theory in e.g. arXiv:0711.0117. Time evolution of cosmological perturbations is computed numerically from the new cosmological perturbation theory of LQG, and various power spectrums are studied for scalar mode and tensor mode perturbations. Comparing these power spectrums with predictions from the classical theory demonstrate corrections in the ultra-long wavelength regime. These corrections are results from the lattice discretization in LQG. In addition, tensor mode perturbations at late time demonstrate the emergence of spin-2 gravitons as low energy excitations from LQG. The graviton has a modified dispersion relation and reduces to the standard graviton in the long wavelength limit.

Loop Quantum Gravity on Dynamical Lattice and Improved Cosmological Effective Dynamics with Inflaton

In the path integral formulation of the reduced phase space Loop Quantum Gravity (LQG), we propose a new approach to allow the spatial cubic lattice (graph) to change dynamically in the physical time evolution. The equations of motion of the path integral derive the effective dynamics of cosmology from the full LQG, when we focus on solutions with homogeneous and isotropic symmetry. The resulting cosmological effective dynamics with the dynamical lattice improves the effective dynamics obtained earlier from the path integral with fixed spatial lattice: The improved effective dynamics recovers the FLRW cosmology at low energy density and resolves the big-bang singularity with a bounce. The critical density $ρ_c$ at the bounce is Planckian $ρ_c\sim Δ^{-1}$ where $Δ$ is a Planckian area serving as certain UV cut-off of the effective theory. The effective dynamics gives the unsymmetric bounce and has the de-Sitter (dS) spacetime in the past of the bounce. The cosmological constant $Λ_{eff}$ of the dS spacetime is emergent from the quantum effect $Λ_{eff}\simΔ^{-1}$. These results are qualitatively similar to the properties of $\barμ$-scheme Loop Quantum Cosmology (LQC). Moreover, we generalize the earlier path integral formulation of the full LQG by taking into account the coupling with an additional real scalar field, which drives the slow-roll inflation of the effective cosmological dynamics. In addition, we discuss the cosmological perturbation theory on the dynamical lattice, and the relation to the Mukhanov-Sasaki equation.

Efficient Simulation of Loop Quantum Gravity -- A Scalable Linear-Optical Approach

The problem of simulating complex quantum processes on classical computers gave rise to the field of quantum simulations. Quantum simulators solve problems, such as Boson sampling, where classical counterparts fail. In another field of physics, the unification of general relativity and quantum theory is one of the greatest challenges of our time. One leading approach is Loop Quantum Gravity (LQG). Here, we connect these two fields and design a linear-optical simulator such that the evolution of the optical quantum gates simulates the spinfoam amplitudes of LQG. It has been shown that computing transition amplitudes in simple quantum field theories falls into the class BQP -- which strongly suggests that computing transition amplitudes of LQG are classically intractable. Therefore, these amplitudes are efficiently computable with universal quantum computers which are, alas, possibly decades away. We propose here an alternative special-purpose linear-optical quantum computer, which can be implemented using current technologies. This machine is capable of efficiently computing these quantities. This work opens a new way to relate quantum gravity to quantum information and will expand our understanding of the theory.

Improved Effective Dynamics of Loop-Quantum-Gravity Black Hole and Nariai Limit

We propose a new model of the spherical symmetric quantum black hole in the reduced phase space formulation. We deparametrize gravity by coupling to the Gaussian dust which provides the material coordinates. The foliation by dust coordinates covers both the interior and exterior of the black hole. After the spherical symmetry reduction, our model is a 1+1 dimensional field theory containing infinitely many degrees of freedom. The effective dynamics of the quantum black hole is generated by an improved physical Hamiltonian ${\bf H}_Δ$ where the holonomy correction is implemented by the $\barμ$-scheme regularization with a Planckian area scale $Δ$. The effective dynamics recovers the semiclassical Schwarzschild geometry at low curvature regime and resolves the black hole singularity with Planckian curvature. Our model predicts that the evolution of the black hole at late time reaches the charged Nariai geometry ${\rm dS}_2\times S^2$ with Planckian radii. The Nariai geometry is stable under linear perturbations but may be unstable by nonperturbative quantum effects. Our model suggests the existence of quantum tunneling of the Nariai geometry and a scenario of black-hole-to-white-hole transition. During the transition, the linear perturbations exhibit chaotic dynamics with Lyapunov exponent $λ=2πT_{\rm dS}\sim Δ^{-1/2}$ relating to the Hawking temperature $T_{\rm dS}$ of ${\rm dS}_2$. In addition, the Nariai geometry in our model provides an interesting example of Wheeler's bag of gold and contains infinitely many infrared soft modes with zero energy density. These infrared modes span a Hilbert space carrying a representation of 1-dimensional spatial diffeomorphisms (or the Witt/Virasoro algebra) which are conserved charges of the effective dynamics by ${\bf H}_Δ$.

Path integral renormalisation in loop quantum cosmology

A coarse graining technique akin to block spin transformations that groups together fiducial cells in a homogeneous and isotropic universe has been recently developed in the context of loop quantum cosmology. The key technical ingredient was an SU(1, 1) group and Lie algebra structure of the physical observables as well as the use of Perelomov coherent states for SU(1, 1). It was shown that the coarse graining operation is completely captured by changing group representations. Based on this result, it was subsequently shown that one can extract an explicit renormalisation group flow of the loop quantum cosmology Hamiltonian operator in a simple model with dust-clock. In this paper, we continue this line of investigation and derive a coherent state path integral formulation of this quantum theory and extract an explicit expression for the renormalisation-scale dependent classical Hamiltonian entering the path integral for a coarse grained description at that scale. We find corrections to the non-renormalised Hamiltonian that are qualitatively similar to those previously investigated via canonical quantisation. In particular, they are again most sensitive to small quantum numbers, showing that the large quantum number (spin) description captured by so called "effective equations" in loop quantum cosmology does not reproduce the physics of many small quantum numbers (spins). Our results have direct impact on path integral quantisation in loop quantum gravity, showing that the usually taken large spin limit should be expected not to capture (without renormalisation, as mostly done) the physics of many small spins that is usually assumed to be present in physically reasonable quantum states.

Observation of Two-Vertex Four-Dimensional Spin Foam Amplitudes with a 10-qubit Superconducting Quantum Processor

Quantum computers are an increasingly hopeful means for understanding large quantum many-body systems bearing high computational complexity. Such systems exhibit complex evolutions of quantum states, and are prevailing in fundamental physics, e.g., quantum gravity. Computing the transition amplitudes between different quantum states by quantum computers is one of the promising ways to solve such computational complexity problems. In this work, we apply a 10-qubit superconducting quantum processor, where the all-to-all circuit connectivity enables a many-body entangling gate that is highly efficient for state generation, to studying the transition amplitudes in loop quantum gravity. With the device metrics such as qubit coherence, control accuracy, and integration level being continuously improved, superconducting quantum processors are expected to outperform their classical counterparts in handling many-body dynamics and may lead to a deeper understanding of quantum gravity.

Semiclassical Limit of New Path Integral Formulation from Reduced Phase Space Loop Quantum Gravity

Recently, a new path integral formulation of Loop Quantum Gravity (LQG) has been derived in arXiv:1910.03763 from the reduced phase space formulation of the canonical LQG. This paper focuses on the semiclassical analysis of this path integral formulation. We show that dominant contributions of the path integral come from solutions of semiclassical equations of motion (EOMs), which reduces to Hamilton's equations of holonomies and fluxes ${h}(e),{p}^a(e)$ in the reduced phase space $\mathcal{P}_γ$ of the cubic lattice $γ$: $\dot{h}(e)=\{{h}(e),\, \mathbf{H}\}$, $\dot{p}^a(e)=\{{p}^a(e),\, \mathbf{H}\}$, where $\mathbf{H}$ is the discrete physical Hamiltonian. The semiclassical dynamics from the path integral becomes an initial value problem of Hamiltonian time evolution in $\mathcal{P}_γ$. Moreover when we take the continuum limit of the lattice $γ$, these Hamilton's equations reproduce correctly classical reduced phase space EOMs of gravity coupled to dust fields in the continuum, as far as initial and final states are semiclassical. Our result proves that the new path integral formulation has the correct semiclassical limit, and indicates that the reduced phase space quantization in LQG is semiclassically consistent. Based on these results, we compare this path integral formulation and the spin foam formulation, and show that this formulation has several advantages including the finiteness, the relation with canonical LQG, and being free of cosine and flatness problems.

Improved ($\barμ$-Scheme) Effective Dynamics of Full Loop Quantum Gravity

We propose a new derivation from the full Loop Quantum Gravity (LQG) to the Loop Quantum Cosmology (LQC) improved $\barμ$-scheme effective dynamics, based on the reduced phase space formulation of LQG and a proposal of effective Hamiltonian/action in the full LQG. A key step of our program is an improved regularization of the full LQG Hamiltonian on a cubic lattice. The improved Hamiltonian uses a set of "dressed holonomies" $h_Δ(\mathfrak{s})$ which not only depend on the connection $A$ but also depend on the length of the curve $\mathfrak{s}$. With the improved Hamiltonian, we propose a quantum effective action and derive a new set effective equations of motion (EOMs) for the full LQG. Then we show that these new EOMs imply the $\barμ$-scheme effective dynamics for both the homogeneous-isotropic and Bianchi-I cosmology, and predict bounce and Planckian critical density. As a byproduct, although the model is defined on a cubic lattice, we find that the improved effective Hamiltonian of cosmology is invariant under the lattice refinement. The cosmological effective dynamics, predictions of bounce and critical density are results at the continuum limit.

Effective Dynamics from Coherent State Path Integral of Full Loop Quantum Gravity

A new routine is proposed to relate Loop Quant Cosmology (LQC) to Loop Quantum Gravity (LQG) from the perspective of effective dynamics. We derive the big-bang singularity resolution and big bounce from the first principle of full canonical LQG. Our results are obtained in the framework of the reduced phase space quantization of LQG. As a key step in our work, we derive with coherent states a new discrete path integral formula of the transition amplitude generated by the physical Hamiltonian. The semiclassical approximation of the path integral formula gives an interesting set of effective equations of motion (EOMs) for full LQG. When solving the EOMs with homogeneous and isotropic ansatz, we reproduce the LQC effective dynamics in $μ_0$-scheme. The solution replaces the big-bang singularity by a big bounce. In the end, we comment on the possible relation between the $\barμ$-scheme of effective dynamics and the continuum limit of the path integral formula.

Quantum Information Scrambling Through a High-Complexity Operator Mapping

Quantum information scrambling has attracted much attention amid the effort to reconcile the conflict between quantum-mechanical unitarity and the thermalizaiton-irreversibility in many-body systems. Here we propose an unconventional mechanism to generate quantum information scrambling through a high-complexity mapping from logical to physical degrees-of-freedom that hides the logical information into non-separable many-body-correlations. Corresponding to this mapping, we develop an algorithm to efficiently sample a Slater-determinant wavefunction and compute all physical observables in dynamics with a polynomial cost in system-size. The system shows information scrambling in the quantum many-body Hilbert space characterized by the spreading of Hamming-distance. At late time, we find emergence of classical diffusion dynamics in this quantum many-body system. We establish that the operator-mapping enabled growth in out-of-time-order-correlator exhibits exponential-scrambling behavior. The quantum information-hiding mapping approach may shed light on the understanding of fundamental connections among computational complexity, information scrambling and quantum thermalization.

Semiclassical Behavior of Spinfoam Amplitude with Small Spins and Entanglement Entropy

Spinfoam amplitudes with small spins can have interesting semiclassical behavior and relate to semiclassical gravity and geometry in 4 dimensions. We study the generalized spinfoam model (Spinfoams for all loop quantum gravity (LQG)) with small spins $j$ but a large number of spin degrees of freedom (DOFs), and find that it relates to the simplicial Engle-Pereira-Rovelli-Livine-Freidel-Krasnov (EPRL-FK) model with large spins and Regge calculus by coarse-graining spin DOFs. Small-$j$ generalized spinfoam amplitudes can be employed to define semiclassical states in the LQG kinematical Hilbert space. Each of these semiclassical states is determined by a 4-dimensional Regge geometry. We compute the entanglement Rényi entropies of these semiclassical states. The entanglement entropy interestingly coarse-grains spin DOFs in the generalized spinfoam model, and satisfies an analog of the thermodynamical first law. This result possibly relates to the quantum black hole thermodynamics in arXiv:1107.1320.

Emergent 4-dimensional linearized gravity from spin foam model

Spin Foam Models (SFMs) are covariant formulations of Loop Quantum Gravity (LQG) in 4 dimensions. This work studies the perturbations of SFMs on a flat background. It demonstrates for the first time that smooth curved spacetime geometries satisfying Einstein equation can emerge from discrete SFMs under an appropriate low energy limit, which corresponds to a semiclassical continuum limit of SFMs. In particular, we show that the low energy excitations of SFMs on a flat background give all smooth solutions of linearized Einstein equations (spin-2 gravitons). This indicates that at the linearized level, classical Einstein gravity is indeed the low energy effective theory from SFMs. Thus our result heightens the confidence that covariant LQG is a consistent theory of quantum gravity. As a key technical tool, a regularization/deformation of the SFM is employed in the derivation. The deformation parameter $δ$ becomes a coupling constant of a higher curvature correction term to Einstein gravity from SFM.

Asymptotic analysis of spin foam amplitude with timelike triangles

The large $j$ asymptotic behavior of $4$-dimensional spin foam amplitude is investigated for the extended spin foam model (Conrady-Hnybida extension) on a simplicial complex. We study the most general situation in which timelike tetrahedra with timelike triangles are taken into account. The large $j$ asymptotic behavior is determined by critical configurations of the amplitude. We identify the critical configurations that correspond to the Lorentzian simplicial geometries with timelike tetrahedra and triangles. Their contributions to the amplitude are phases asymptotically, whose exponents equal to Regge action of gravity. The amplitude may also contains critical configurations corresponding to non-degenerate split signature $4$-simplices and degenerate vector geometries. But for vertex amplitudes containing at least one timelike tetrahedron and one spacelike tetrahedron, critical configurations only give Lorentzian $4$-simplices, while the split signature and degenerate $4$-simplices do not appear.

Measuring Holographic Entanglement Entropy on a Quantum Simulator

Quantum simulation promises to have wide applications in many fields where problems are hard to model with classical computers. Various quantum devices of different platforms have been built to tackle the problems in, say, quantum chemistry, condensed matter physics, and high-energy physics. Here, we report an experiment towards the simulation of quantum gravity by simulating the holographic entanglement entropy. On a six-qubit nuclear magnetic resonance quantum simulator, we demonstrate a key result of Anti-de Sitter/conformal field theory(\adscft) correspondence---the Ryu-Takayanagi formula is demonstrated by measuring the relevant entanglement entropies on the perfect tensor state. The fidelity of our experimentally prepared the six-qubit state is 85.0\% via full state tomography and reaches 93.7\% if the signal-decay due to decoherence is taken into account. Our experiment serves as the basic module of simulating more complex tensor network states that exploring \adscft correspondence. As the initial experimental attempt to study \adscft via quantum information processing, our work opens up new avenues exploring quantum gravity phenomena on quantum simulators.

Local density matrices of many-body states in the constant weight subspaces

Let $V=\bigotimes_{k=1}^{N} V_{k}$ be the $N$ spin-$j$ Hilbert space with $d=2j+1$-dimensional single particle space. We fix an orthonormal basis $\{|m_i\rangle\}$ for each $V_{k}$, with weight $m_i\in \{-j,\ldots j\}$. Let $V_{(w)}$ be the subspace of $V$ with a constant weight $w$, with an orthonormal basis $\{|m_1,\ldots,m_N\rangle\}$ subject to $\sum_k m_k=w$. We show that the combinatorial properties of the constant weight condition imposes strong constraints on the reduced density matrices for any vector $|ψ\rangle$ in the constant weight subspace, which limits the possible entanglement structures of $|ψ\rangle$. Our results find applications in the overlapping quantum marginal problems, quantum error-correcting codes, and the spin-network structures in quantum gravity.

Spin foam propagator: A new perspective to include a cosmological constant

In recent years, the calculation of the first non-vanishing order of the metric 2-point function or graviton propagator in a semiclassical limit has evolved as a standard test for the credibility of a proposed spin foam model. The existing results of spinfoam graviton propagator rely heavily on the so-called double scaling limit where spins $j$ are large and the Barbero-Immirzi parameter $γ$ is small such that the area $A\propto jγ$ is approximately constant. However, it seems that this double scaling limit is bound to break down in models including a cosmological constant. We explore this in detail for the recently proposed model by Haggard, Han, Kaminski and Riello and discuss alternative definitions of a graviton propagator, in which the double scaling limit can be avoided.

Quantum Spacetime on a Quantum Simulator

We experimentally simulate the spin networks -- a fundamental description of quantum spacetime at the Planck level. We achieve this by simulating quantum tetrahedra and their interactions. The tensor product of these quantum tetrahedra comprises spin networks. In this initial attempt to study quantum spacetime by quantum information processing, on a four-qubit nuclear magnetic resonance quantum simulator, we simulate the basic module -- comprising five quantum tetrahedra -- of the interactions of quantum spacetime. By measuring the geometric properties on the corresponding quantum tetrahedra and simulate their interactions, our experiment serves as the basic module that represents the Feynman diagram vertex in the spin-network formulation of quantum spacetime.

SL(2,C) Chern-Simons Theory, Flat Connections, and Four-dimensional Quantum Geometry

A correspondence between three-dimensional flat connections and constant curvature four-dimensional simplices is used to give a novel quantization of geometry via complex SL(2,C) Chern-Simons theory. The resulting quantum geometrical states are hence represented by the 3d blocks of analytically continued Chern-Simons theory. In the semiclassical limit of this quantization the three-dimensional Chern-Simons action, remarkably, becomes the discrete Einstein-Hilbert action of a 4-simplex, featuring the appropriate boundary terms as well as the essential cosmological term proportional to the simplex's curved 4-volume. Both signs of the curvature and associated cosmological constant are present in the class of flat connections that give rise to this correspondence. We provide a Wilson graph operator that picks out this class of connections. We discuss how to promote these results to a model of Lorentzian covariant quantum gravity encompassing both signs of the cosmological constant. This paper presents the details for the results reported in reference [1] (arXiv:1509.00458).
