Compton Heated Outflow from CDAFs

Convection-dominated accretion flows (CDAF) are expected to have a shallower density profile and a higher radiation efficiency as compared to advection-dominated accretion flows (ADAF). Both solutions have been developed to account for the observed properties of the low luminosity, high temperature X-ray sources believed to involve accretion onto massive black holes. Self-similar CDAFs also have steeper poloidal density gradients and temperatures close to the virial temperature. All these characteristics make CDAFs more capable of producing polar outflows driven by Compton heating as compared to other classical accretion disks. We investigate the conditions for producing such outflows in CDAFs and look for the mass accretion rate, or, equally, the luminosity of CDAFs for which such outflows will exist. When the electron temperature saturates around 10^11 K at the inner region, polar outflows are probable for 8x10^-7 <~ L/L_E <~ 4x10^-5, where L_E is the Eddington luminosity. Outflows are well collimated with small opening angles. The luminosity range for which outflow solutions exist is narrower for lower electron temperature flows and disappears completely for electron temperature <~ 6x10^9 K. When the magnetic field is present, we find that outflows are possible if the magnetic field is less than from 10% to 1% of the equipartition field. We also find that outflows are more likely to be produced when the viscosity parameter alpha is small. The tendency for jet-like collimated outflows for these solutions is presumably astrophysically relevant given the high frequency of jets from AGNs.

Equations of General Relativistic Radiation Hydrodynamics from Tensor Formalism

Radiation interacts with matter via exchange of energy and momentum. When matter is moving with a relativistic velocity or when the background spacetime is strongly curved, rigorous relativistic treatment of hydrodynamics and radiative transfer is required. Here, we derive fully general relativistic radiation hydrodynamic equations from a covariant tensor formalism. The equations can be applied to any three-dimensional problems and are rather starightforward to understand compared to the comoving frame-based equations. Current approach is applicable to any spacetime or coordinates, but in this work we specifically choose the Schwarzschild spacetime to show explicitly how the hydrodynamic and the radiation moment equations are derived. Some important aspects of relativistic radiation hydrodynamics and the difficulty with the radiation moment formalism are discussed as well.

Topology Analysis of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey: I. Scale and Luminosity Dependences

We measure the topology of volume-limited galaxy samples selected from a parent sample of 314,050 galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey(SDSS), which is now complete enough to describe the fully three-dimensional topology and its dependence on galaxy properties. We compare the observed genus statistic Gν_f) to predictions for a Gaussian random field and to the genus measured for mock surveys constructed from new large-volume simulations of the LambdaCDM cosmology. In this analysis we carefully examine the dependence of the observed genus statistic on the Gaussian smoothing scale R_G from 3.5 to 11 h^-1Mpc and on the luminosity of galaxies over the range -22.50<M_r<-18.5. The void multiplicity A_V is less than unity at all smoothing scales. Because A_V cannot become less than 1 through gravitational evolution, this result provides strong evidence for biased galaxy formation in low density environments. We also find clear evidence of luminosity bias of topology within the volume-limited sub-samples. The shift parameter Delta nu indicates that the genus of brighter galaxies shows a negative shift toward a ``meatball'' (i.e. cluster-dominated) topology, while faint galaxies show a positive shift toward a ``bubble'' (i.e. void-dominated) topology. The transition from negative to positive shift occurs approximately at the characteristic absolute magnitude M_{r*}=-20.4. Even in this analysis of the largest galaxy sample to date, we detect the influence of individual large-scale structures, as the shift parameter Delta nu and cluster multiplicity A_C reflect (at ~3 sigma) the presence of the Sloan Great Wall and a X-shaped structure which runs for several hundred Mpc across the survey volume.

Korean Nova Records in A.D. 1073 and A.D. 1074: R Aquarii

R Aqr is known to be a symbiotic binary system with an associated extended emission nebula, possibly produced by a historic outburst. To find the associated historic records, we searched for and compiled all 'Guest Star' and 'Peculiar Star' records in three Korean 'official' history books that cover almost two thousand years, Samguksagi, Goryeosa, Joseonwangjosillok. In addition to the record of A.D. 1073, previously noted by Li (1985), we have found in Goryeosa another candidate record of A.D. 1074, which has the same positional description as that of A.D. 1073 with an additional brightness description. We examined various aspects of the two records and conclude that they both are likely to be the records of outburst of R Aqr. This means that there were two successive outbursts in A.D. 1073 and in A.D. 1074, separated by approximately one year. Based on these records, we estimate the distance to R Aqr to be 273 pc if the expansion of the nebula has been at a constant rate. The brightness record of A.D. 1074 corresponds to the absolute magnitude at outburst of M_(outburst) = -6.2 mag. ~ -5.2 mag. at this distance. The two Korean records associated with R Aqr may provide astronomically meaningful constraints to the outburst model of R Aqr and the formative process of its nebulosity.

Analysis of historical meteor and meteor shower records: Korea, China, and Japan

We have compiled and analyzed historical Korean meteor and meteor shower records in three Korean official history books, Samguksagi which covers the three Kingdoms period (57 B.C -- A.D. 935), Goryeosa of Goryeo dynasty (A.D. 918 -- 1392), and Joseonwangjosillok of Joseon dynasty (A.D. 1392 -- 1910). We have found 3861 meteor and 31 meteor shower records. We have confirmed the peaks of Perseids and an excess due to the mixture of Orionids, north-Taurids, or Leonids through the Monte-Carlo test. The peaks persist from the period of Goryeo dynasty to that of Joseon dynasty, for almost one thousand years. Korean records show a decrease of Perseids activity and an increase of Orionids/north-Taurids/Leonids activity. We have also analyzed seasonal variation of sporadic meteors from Korean records. We confirm the seasonal variation of sporadic meteors from the records of Joseon dynasty with the maximum number of events being roughly 1.7 times the minimum. The Korean records are compared with Chinese and Japanese records for the same periods. Major features in Chinese meteor shower records are quite consistent with those of Korean records, particularly for the last millennium. Japanese records also show Perseids feature and Orionids/north-Taurids/Leonids feature, although they are less prominent compared to those of Korean or Chinese records.

Around the Clock Observations of the Q0957+561 A,B Gravitationally Lensed Quasar II: Results for the second observing season

We report on an observing campaign in March 2001 to monitor the brightness of the later arriving Q0957+561 B image in order to compare with the previously published brightness observations of the (first arriving) A image. The 12 participating observatories provided 3543 image frames which we have analyzed for brightness fluctuations. From our classical methods for time delay determination, we find a 417.09 +/- 0.07 day time delay which should be free of effects due to incomplete sampling. During the campaign period, the quasar brightness was relatively constant and only small fluctuations were found; we compare the structure function for the new data with structure function estimates for the 1995--6 epoch, and show that the structure function is statistically non-stationary. We also examine the data for any evidence of correlated fluctuations at zero lag. We discuss the limits to our ability to measure the cosmological time delay if the quasar's emitting surface is time resolved, as seems likely.

A New Channel to Search for Extra-solar Systems with Multiple Planets via Gravitational Microlensing

Gaudi, Naber & Sackett pointed out that if an event is caused by a lens system containing more than two planets, all planets will affect the central region of the magnification pattern, and thus the existence of the multiple planets can be inferred by detecting additionally deformed anomalies from intensive monitoring of high magnification events. Unfortunately, this method has important limitations in identifying the existence of multiple planets and determining their parameters due to the degeneracy of the resulting light curve anomalies from those induced by a single planet and the complexity of multiple planet lensing models. In this paper, we propose a new channel to search for multiple planets via microlensing. The method is based on the fact that the anomalies induced by multiple planets are well approximated by the superposition of those of the single planet systems where the individual planet-primary pairs act as independent lens systems. Then, if the source trajectory passes both of the outer deviation regions induced by the individual planets, one can unambiguously identify the existence of the multiple planets. We illustrate that the probability of successively detecting light curve anomalies induced by two Jovian-mass planets located in the lensing zone through this channel will be substantial. Since the individual anomalies can be well modeled by much simpler single planet lensing models, the proposed method has an important advantage of allowing one to accurately determine the parameters of the individual planets.

Preheated Advection Dominated Accretion Flow

All high temperature accretion solutions including ADAF are physically thick, so outgoing radiation interacts with the incoming flow, sharing as much or more resemblance with classical spherical accretion flows as with disk flows. We examine this interaction for the popular ADAF case. We find that without allowance for Compton preheating, a very restricted domain of ADAF solution is permitted and with Compton preheating included a new high temperature PADAF branch appears in the solution space. In the absence of preheating, high temperature flows do not exist when the mass accretion rate mdot == Mdot c^2 / L_E >~ 10^-1.5. Below this mass accretion rate, a roughly conical region around the hole cannot sustain high temperature ions and electrons for all flows having mdot >~ 10^-4, which may lead to a funnel possibly filled with a tenuous hot outgoing wind. If the flow starts at large radii with the usual equilibrium temperature ~10^4 K, the critical mass accretion rate is much lower, mdot \~10^-3.7 above which level no self-consistent ADAF (without preheating) can exist. However, above this critical mass accretion rate, the flow can be self-consistently maintained at high temperature if Compton preheating is considered. These solutions constitute a new branch of solutions as in spherical accretion flows. High temperature PADAF flows can exist above the critical mass accretion rate in addition to the usual cold thin disk solutions. We also find solutions where the flow near the equatorial plane accretes normally while the flow near the pole is overheated by Compton preheating, possibly becoming, a polar wind, solutions which we designate WADAF.

Toward the Evidence of the Accretion Disk Emission in the Symbiotic Star RR Tel

In this paper, we argue that in the symbiotic star RR Tel the existence of an accretion disk around the hot companion is strongly implied by the characteristic features exhibited by the Raman-scattered O VI lines around 6830 Åand 7088 Å. High degrees of polarization and double-peaked profiles in the Raman-scattered lines and single-peak profiles for other emission lines are interpreted as line-of-sight effects, where the H I scatterers near the giant see an incident double-peaked profile and an observer with a low inclination sees single-peak profiles. It is predicted that different mass concentrations around the accretion disk formed by a dusty wind may lead to the disparate ratios of the blue peak strength to the red counterpart observed in the 6830 and 7088 features. We discuss the evolutionary links between symbiotic stars and bipolar protoplanetary nebulae and conclude that the Raman scattering processes may play an important role in investigation of the physical properties of these objects.

The Stream-Stream Collision after the Tidal Disruption of a Star Around a Massive Black Hole

A star can be tidally disrupted around a massive black hole. It has been known that the debris forms a precessing stream, which may collide with itself. The stream collision is a key process determining the subsequent evolution of the stellar debris: if the orbital energy is efficiently dissipated, the debris will eventually form a circular disk (or torus). In this paper, we have numerically studied such stream collision resulting from the encounter between a 10^6 Msun black hole and a 1 Msun normal star with a pericenter radius of 100 Rsun. A simple treatment for radiative cooling has been adopted for both optically thick and thin regions. We have found that approximately 10 to 15% of the initial kinetic energy of the streams is converted into thermal energy during the collision. The angular momentum of the incoming stream is increased by a factor of 2 to 3, and such increase, together with the decrease in kinetic energy, significantly helps the circularization process. Initial luminosity burst due to the collision may reach as high as 10^41 erg/sec in 10^4 sec, after which the luminosity increases again (but slowly this time) to a steady value of a few 10^40 erg/sec in a few times of 10^5 sec. The radiation from the system is expected to be close to Planckian with effective temperature of \~10^5K.

Thermal Properties of Two-Dimensional Advection Dominated Accretion Flow

We study the thermal structure of the widely adopted two-dimensional advection dominated accretion flow (ADAF) of Narayan & Yi (1995a). The critical radius for a given mass accretion rate, outside of which the optically thin hot solutions do not exist in the equatorial plane, agrees with one-dimensional study. However, we find that, even within the critical radius, there always exists a conical region of the flow, around the pole, which cannot maintain the assumed high electron temperature, regardless of the mass accretion rate, in the absence of radiative heating. This could lead to torus-like advection inflow shape since, in general, the ions too will cool down. We also find that Compton preheating is generally important and, if the radiative efficiency, defined as the luminosity output divided by the mass accretion rate times the velocity of light squared, is above sim 4x10^-3, the polar region of the flow is preheated above the virial temperature by Compton heating and it may result in time-dependent behaviour or outflow while accretion continues in the equatorial plane. Thus, under most relevant circumstances, ADAF solutions may be expected to be accompanied by polar outflow winds. While preheating instabilities exist in ADAF, as for spherical flows, the former are to some extent protected by their characteristically higher densities and higher cooling rates, which reduce their susceptibility to Compton driven overheating.

Hydrodynamics of Accretion onto Black Holes

Spherical and axisymmetric accretion onto black holes is discussed. Physical processes in various families of solutions are explained and their characteristics are summarized. Recently discovered solutions of axisymmetric flow provide us with various radiation efficiency and spectrum, which may successfully model diverse accretion systems. Possible role of preheating is also speculated. The various families of solutions can be plotted as trajectories on the plane of (l,e) [or (l,dot m)] where l is the luminosity in units of the Eddington luminosity, dot m is the similarly defined mass accretion rate and e is the efficiency defined by e equiv L/dot M c^2 = l/dot m. We discuss the domains on these planes where solutions are known or expected to be unstable to either spherical or on-spherical perturbations. Preliminary analysis indicates that a preheating instability will occur along the polar direction of the advection dominated flow for e \gsim 10^{-2}.

Variability and Stability in Radiation Hydrodynamic Accretion Flows

In this paper we examine time-dependent and three-dimensional perturbations of spherical accretion flow onto a neutron star close to its Eddington limit. Our treatment assumes a Schwarzschild geometry for the spacetime outside the neutron star and is fully general relativistic. At all the accretion rates studied, the response of the accretion flow to perturbations includes weakly damped oscillatory modes. At sufficiently high luminosities --- but still well below the Eddington limit --- the flows become unstable to aspherical perturbations. These unstable radiation hydrodynamic modes resemble the onset of convection, and allow accretion to occur preferentially through more rapidly descending columns of gas, while the radiation produced escapes through neighboring columns in which the gas descends more slowly.

Curvature of the Universe and Observed Gravitational Lens Image Separations Versus Redshift

In a flat, k=0 cosmology with galaxies that approximate singular isothermal spheres, gravitational lens image separations should be uncorrelated with source redshift. But in an open k=-1 cosmology such gravitational lens image separations become smaller with increasing source redshift. The observed separations do become smaller with increasing source redshift but the effect is even stronger than that expected in an Omega=0 cosmology. The observations are thus not compatible with the "standard" gravitational lensing statistics model in a flat universe. We try various open and flat cosmologies, galaxy mass profiles, galaxy merging and evolution models, and lensing aided by clusters to explain the correlation. We find the data is not compatible with any of these possibilities within the 95% confidence limit, leaving us with a puzzle. If we regard the observed result as a statistical fluke, it is worth noting that we are about twice as likely to observe it in an open universe (with 0 -2.0.

Gravitational Lensing Statistics in a Flat Universe

The probability distribution of lens image separations is calculated for the ``standard'' gravitational lensing statistics model in an arbitrary, flat Robertson-Walker universe, where lensing galaxies are singular isothermal spheres that follow the Schechter luminosity function. In a flat universe, the probability distribution is independent of the source distribution in space and in brightness. The distribution is compared with observed multiple-image lens cases through Monte-Carlo simulations and the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. The predicted distribution depends on the shape of the angular selection bias used, which varies for different observations. The test result also depends on which lens systems are included in the samples. We mainly include the lens systems where a single galaxy is responsible for lensing. We find that the ``standard'' model predicts a distribution which is different from the observed one. However, the statistical significance of the discrepancy is not large enough to invalidate the ``standard'' model with high confidence. Only the radio data reject the model at the 95% confidence level, which is based on four/three lens cases. Therefore, we cannot say that the observational data reject the ``standard'' model with enough statistical confidence. However, if we take the velocity dispersion of dark matter without the conversion factor (3/2)^(1/2) from that of luminous matter, the discrepancy is quite severe, and even the ground-based optical survey data reject the ``standard'' model with > ~90% confidence.
