Global Well-posedness for the Multi-species Boltzmann Equation with Large Amplitude Initial Data

This paper establishes the global well-posedness of the multi-species Boltzmann equation with large-amplitude initial data in the periodic domain $\mathbb{T}^3$. In contrast to the single-species case, the multi-species mixture model lacks structural symmetry in its collision operators due to the distinct masses of different species. This asymmetry makes it difficult to obtain pointwise estimates for the nonlinear collision terms. Although the Carleman representation for the mixture model introduced in \cite{BD2016} provides a useful reduction of the collision integral, it does not directly yield the desired estimate. To overcome this difficulty, we identify an additional algebraic cancellation structure which leads to the pointwise estimates for the nonlinear terms. By applying this refined approach, we derive the necessary velocity-weighted $L^\infty$ estimates for the nonlinear terms. Furthermore, under the smallness assumption on the initial relative entropy, we establish a uniform lower bound for the nonlinear collision frequency and prove that the large-amplitude solutions exist globally in time and decay exponentially to the global equilibrium.

A Theory-guided Weighted $L^2$ Loss for solving the BGK model via Physics-informed neural networks

While Physics-Informed Neural Networks offer a promising framework for solving partial differential equations, the standard $L^2$ loss formulation is fundamentally insufficient when applied to the Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook (BGK) model. Specifically, simply minimizing the standard loss does not guarantee accurate predictions of the macroscopic moments, causing the approximate solutions to fail in capturing the true physical solution. To overcome this limitation, we introduce a velocity-weighted $L^2$ loss function designed to effectively penalize errors in the high-velocity regions. By establishing a stability estimate for the proposed approach, we shows that minimizing the proposed weighted loss guarantees the convergence of the approximate solution. Also, numerical experiments demonstrate that employing this weighted PINN loss leads to superior accuracy and robustness across various benchmarks compared to the standard approach.

Relativistic BGK model for reactive gas mixtures

We propose a BGK-type kinetic model for relativistic reactive gas mixtures. This model serves as a computationally tractable yet physically consistent alternative to the corresponding Boltzmann equation. The relaxation operator is constructed to ensure that the model correctly satisfies the conservation laws and relaxes to the proper equilibrium: a Jüttner distribution characterized by a common temperature, velocity, and chemical potentials that obey the law of mass action. Furthermore, we prove that the model satisfies an H-theorem with the same entropy functional as the original Boltzmann equation. Finally, numerical simulations are presented, which confirm that the model preserves the conserved quantities and exhibits entropy decay towards the proper Jüttner equilibrium.

Forward and Inverse Simulation of Pseudo-Two-Dimensional Model of Lithium-Ion Batteries Using Neural Networks

In this work, we address the challenges posed by the high nonlinearity of the Butler-Volmer (BV) equation in forward and inverse simulations of the pseudo-two-dimensional (P2D) model using the physics-informed neural network (PINN) framework. The BV equation presents significant challenges for PINNs, primarily due to the hyperbolic sine term, which renders the Hessian of the PINN loss function highly ill-conditioned. To address this issue, we introduce a bypassing term that improves numerical stability by substantially reducing the condition number of the Hessian matrix. Furthermore, the small magnitude of the ionic flux \( j \) often leads to a common failure mode where PINNs converge to incorrect solutions. We demonstrate that incorporating a secondary conservation law for the solid-phase potential \( ψ\) effectively prevents such convergence issues and ensures solution accuracy. The proposed methods prove effective for solving both forward and inverse problems involving the BV equation. Specifically, we achieve precise parameter estimation in inverse scenarios and reliable solution predictions for forward simulations.

Stationary solutions to the relativistic BGK model for gas mixtures in a slab

In a recent paper [16], the authors proposed a BGK model for relativistic gas mixtures based on the Marle-type approximation, which satisfies the fundamental kinetic properties: non-negativity of distribution functions, conservation laws, H-theorem, and indifferentiability principle. In this paper, we are concerned with the stationary problems to the relativistic BGK model for gas mixtures in slab geometry. We establish the existence of a unique mild solution with the fixed inflow boundary data when the collision frequencies for each species are sufficiently small.

Convergence property of the Quantized Distributed Gradient descent with constant stepsizes and an effective strategy for the stepsize selection

In this paper, we establish new convergence results for the quantized distributed gradient descent and suggest a novel strategy of choosing the stepsizes for the high-performance of the algorithm. Under the strongly convexity assumption on the aggregate cost function and the smoothness assumption on each local cost function, we prove the algorithm converges exponentially fast to a small neighborhood of the optimizer whose radius depends on the stepsizes. Based on our convergence result, we suggest an effective selection of stepsizes which repeats diminishing the stepsizes after a number of specific iterations. Both the convergence results and the effectiveness of the suggested stepsize selection are also verified by the numerical experiments.

Relativistic BGK model for gas mixtures

Unlike the case for classical particles, the literature on BGK type models for relativistic gas mixture is extremely limited. There are a few results %\cite{Kremer,Kremer3,KP} in which such relativistic BGK models for gas mixture are employed to compute transport coefficients. However, to the best knowledge of authors, relativistic BGK models for gas mixtures with complete presentation of the relaxation operators are missing in the literature. In this paper, we fill this gap by suggesting a BGK model for relativistic gas mixtures for which the existence of each equilibrium coefficients in the relaxation operator is rigorously guaranteed in a way that all the essential physical properties are satisfied such as the conservation laws, the H-theorem, the capturing of the correct equilibrium state, the indifferentiability principle, and the recovery of the classical BGK model in the Newtonian limit.

Inexact Online Proximal Mirror Descent for time-varying composite optimization

In this paper, we consider the online proximal mirror descent for solving the time-varying composite optimization problems. For various applications, the algorithm naturally involves the errors in the gradient and proximal operator. We obtain sharp estimates on the dynamic regret of the algorithm when the regular part of the cost is convex and smooth. If the Bregman distance is given by the Euclidean distance, our result also improves the previous work in two ways: (i) We establish a sharper regret bound compared to the previous work in the sense that our estimate does not involve $O(T)$ term appearing in that work. (ii) We also obtain the result when the domain is the whole space $\mathbb{R}^n$, whereas the previous work was obtained only for bounded domains. We also provide numerical tests for problems involving the errors in the gradient and proximal operator.

Entropy production estimate for the ES-BGK model with the correct Prandtl number

In this paper, we establish the entropy-entropy production estimate for the ES-BGK model, a generalized version of the BGK model of the Boltzmann equation introduced for better approximation in the Navier-Stokes limit. Our result improves the previous entropy production estimate [39] in that (1) the full range of Prandtl parameters $-1/2\leqν<1$ including the critical case $ν=-1/2$ is covered, and (2) a sharper entropy production bound is obtained. An explicit characterization of the coefficient of the entropy-entropy production estimate is also presented.

Stationary BGK models for chemically reacting gas in a slab

We study the boundary value problem of two stationary BGK-type models - the BGK model for fast chemical reaction and the BGK model for slow chemical reaction - and provide a unified argument to establish the existence and uniqueness of stationary flows of reactive BGK models in a slab. For both models, the main difficulty arises in the uniform control of the reactive parameters from above and below, since, unlike the BGK models for non-reactive gases, the reactive parameters for the reactive BGK models are defined through highly nonlinear relations. To overcome this difficulty, we introduce several nonlinear functionals that capture essential structures of such nonlinear relations such as the monotonicity in specific variables, that enable one to derive necessary estimates for the reactive equilibrium coefficients.
