3d TQFTs from Argyres-Douglas theories

We construct a new class of three-dimensional topological quantum field theories (3d TQFTs) by considering generalized Argyres-Douglas theories on $S^1 \times M_3$ with a non-trivial holonomy of a discrete global symmetry along the $S^1$. For the minimal choice of the holonomy, the resulting 3d TQFTs are non-unitary and semisimple, thus distinguishing themselves from theories of Chern-Simons and Rozansky-Witten types respectively. Changing the holonomy performs a Galois transformation on the TQFT, which can sometimes give rise to more familiar unitary theories such as the $(G_2)_1$ and $(F_4)_1$ Chern-Simons theories. Our construction is based on an intriguing relation between topologically twisted partition functions, wild Hitchin characters, and chiral algebras which, when combined together, relate Coulomb branch and Higgs branch data of the same 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ theory. We test our proposal by applying localization techniques to the conjectural $\mathcal{N}=1$ UV Lagrangian descriptions of the $(A_1,A_2)$, $(A_1,A_3)$ and $(A_1,D_3)$ theories.

Gluing I: Integrals and Symmetries

We review some aspects of the cutting and gluing law in local quantum field theory. In particular, we emphasize the description of gluing by a path integral over a space of polarized boundary conditions, which are given by leaves of some Lagrangian foliation in the phase space. We think of this path integral as a non-local $(d-1)$-dimensional gluing theory associated to the parent local $d$-dimensional theory. We describe various properties of this procedure and spell out conditions under which symmetries of the parent theory lead to symmetries of the gluing theory. The purpose of this paper is to set up a playground for the companion paper where these techniques are applied to obtain new results in supersymmetric theories.

A 2d (0,2) appetizer

Searching for the simplest non-abelian 2d gauge theory with $\mathcal{N}=(0,2)$ supersymmetry and non-trivial IR physics, we propose a new duality for $SU(2)$ SQCD with $N_f = 4$ chiral flavors. The chiral algebra of this theory is found to be $\mathfrak{so}(8)_{-2}$, the same as in 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ $SU(2)$ gauge theory with four hypermultiplets.

A one-dimensional theory for Higgs branch operators

We use supersymmetric localization to calculate correlation functions of half-BPS local operators in 3d ${\cal N} = 4$ superconformal field theories whose Lagrangian descriptions consist of vectormultiplets coupled to hypermultiplets. The operators we primarily study are certain twisted linear combinations of Higgs branch operators that can be inserted anywhere along a given line. These operators are constructed from the hypermultiplet scalars. They form a one-dimensional non-commutative operator algebra with topological correlation functions. The 2- and 3-point functions of Higgs branch operators in the full 3d ${\cal N}=4$ theory can be simply inferred from the 1d topological algebra. After conformally mapping the 3d superconformal field theory from flat space to a round three-sphere, we preform supersymmetric localization using a supercharge that does not belong to any 3d ${\cal N} = 2$ subalgebra of the ${\cal N}=4$ algebra. The result is a simple model that can be used to calculate correlation functions in the 1d topological algebra mentioned above. This model is a 1d Gaussian theory coupled to a matrix model, and it can be viewed as a gauge-fixed version of a topological gauged quantum mechanics. Our results generalize to non-conformal theories on $S^3$ that contain real mass and Fayet-Iliopolous parameters. We also provide partial results in the 1d topological algebra associated with the Coulomb branch, where we calculate correlation functions of local operators built from the vectormultiplet scalars.

Chiral algebras in Landau-Ginzburg models

Chiral algebras in the cohomology of the $\overline{Q}_+$ supercharge of two-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=(0,2)$ theories on flat spacetime are discussed. Using the supercurrent multiplet, we show that the answer is renormalization group invariant for theories with an R-symmetry. For $\mathcal{N}=(0,2)$ Landau-Ginzburg models, the chiral algebra is determined by the operator equations of motion, which preserve their classical form, and quantum renormalization of composite operators. We study these theories and then specialize to the $\mathcal{N}=(2,2)$ models and consider some examples.

Vertex algebras and 4-manifold invariants

We propose a way of computing 4-manifold invariants, old and new, as chiral correlation functions in half-twisted 2d $\mathcal{N}=(0,2)$ theories that arise from compactification of fivebranes. Such formulation gives a new interpretation of some known statements about Seiberg-Witten invariants, such as the basic class condition, and gives a prediction for structural properties of the multi-monopole invariants and their non-abelian generalizations.

Superstring BRST no-ghost theorem at arbitrary picture number

A simple and self-contained treatment of the superstring BRST no-ghost theorem at non-zero momentum and arbitrary picture number is presented. We prove by applying the spectral sequence that the absolute BRST cohomology is isomorphic to two copies of the light-cone spectrum at adjacent ghost numbers. We single out a representative in each cohomology class. A non-degenerate pairing between the Fock spaces, an induced pairing on the cohomology and a Hermitian inner product on the cohomology are constructed.

More on Gopakumar-Vafa formula: coefficients $\mathcal{F}_0$ and $\mathcal{F}_1$

In Type IIA compactified on a Calabi-Yau threefold, the genus zero and one terms of the Gopakumar-Vafa (GV) formula describe F-terms that are related to genus zero and one topological amplitudes. While for higher-genus terms $\mathcal{F}_g, g\ge 2$, the contribution of a light hypermultiplet can be computed via a sum over Kaluza-Klein harmonics, as has been shown in a recent paper, for $g \leq 1$, the sum diverges and it is better to compute $\mathcal{F}_0$ and $\mathcal{F}_1$ directly in five-dimensional field theory. Such a computation is presented here.

Some Details On The Gopakumar-Vafa and Ooguri-Vafa Formulas

The Gopakumar-Vafa (GV) formula expresses certain couplings that arise in Type IIA compactification to four dimensions on a Calabi-Yau manifold in terms of a counting of BPS states in M-theory. The couplings in question have applications to topological strings and supersymmetric black holes. In this paper, we reconsider the GV formula, taking a close look at the Schwinger-like computation that was suggested in the original GV work. The goal is to understand the background that must be used in this computation, the role played by the extended supersymmetry of this background, and how the computation gives a holomorphic result though superficially depending only on particle masses. We also examine in a similar way the Ooguri-Vafa (OV) formula, which is an extension of the GV formula to include D4-branes.

Violation of the phase space general covariance as a diffeomorphism anomaly in quantum mechanics

We consider a topological quantum mechanics described by a phase space path integral and study the 1-dimensional analog for the path integral representation of the Kontsevich formula. We see that the naive bosonic integral possesses divergences, that it is even naively non-invariant and thus is ill-defined. We then consider a super-extension of the theory which eliminates the divergences and makes the theory naively invariant. This super-extension is equivalent to the correct choice of measure and was discussed in the literature. We then investigate the behavior of this extended theory under diffeomorphisms of the extended phase space and despite of its naive invariance find out that the theory possesses anomaly under nonlinear diffeomorphisms. We localize the origin of the anomaly and calculate the lowest nontrivial anomalous contribution.
