Class-Conditioned Gaussian Mixture Modeling for Imbalanced Time Series Quantification

Quantification, estimating class prevalences in bags of unlabeled instances is vital in domains where aggregate statistics are more important than individual instance labels, such as biosignal monitoring, fall detection, and activity recognition. We investigate this issue in the challenging setting of imbalanced time series data and develop CC-GMNet-TS, a class-conditioned Gaussian mixture quantifier that combines a Transformer-based feature extractor with per-class latent mixtures. Unlike previous mixture-based quantifiers, which use a single Gaussian mixture shared by all classes, CC-GMNet-TS assigns each class its own compact mixture in a bounded latent space and scores segment embeddings against these class-specific components to create bag-level representations that emphasize rare but informative patterns. Bags are constructed from labeled pools using the Artificial Prevalence Protocol (APP) and prior shift bag sampling (PShift) to cover a wide range of class prevalence scenarios, and the model is trained end-to-end with a quantification-oriented loss. Experiments on three benchmarks: EMG Data for Gestures, SmartFallMM, and UCI-HAR show that CC-GMNet-TS achieves lower error across the three benchmarks compared to traditional aggregators and recent deep quantifiers, while ablations confirm the contributions of both the Transformer backbone and class-conditioned mixtures during PShift.

Towards the Effects of Alignment Edits on the Quality of Experience of 360 Videos

The optimization of viewers' quality of experience (QoE) in 360 videos faces two major roadblocks: inaccurate adaptive streaming and viewers missing the plot of a story. Alignment edit emerged as a promising mechanism to avoid both issues at once. Alignment edits act on the content, matching the users' viewport with a region of interest in the video content. As a consequence, viewers' attention is focused, reducing exploratory behavior and enabling the optimization of network resources; in addition, it allows for a precise selection of events to be shown to viewers, supporting viewers to follow the storyline. In this work, we investigate the effects of alignment edits on QoE by conducting two user studies. Specifically, we measured three QoE factors: presence, comfort, and overall QoE. We introduce a new alignment edit, named \textit{Fade-rotation}, based on a mechanism to reduce cybersickness in VR games. In the user studies, we tested four versions of fade-rotation and compared them with instant alignment. We observed from the results that gradual alignment achieves good levels of comfort for all contents and rotational speed tested, showing its validity. We observed a decrease in head motion after both alignment edits, with the gradual edit reaching a reduction in head speed of 8\% greater than that of instant alignment, confirming the usefulness of these edits for streaming video on-demand. Finally, parameters to implement \textit{Fade-rotation} are described.

Enlaces de rádio de longa distância utilizando a banda de HF

The interest in the use of the HF band in telecommunication has increased significantly in the last decade, mainly due to the development of new standards for military telecommunications in HF, as well as the expansion of digital broadcasting in the HF band. More specifically, these new standards allow the implementation of links of hundreds or thousands of kilometers at a low cost, which suggests a widespread adoption can occur. In Brazil, this type of communication can be used in remote regions or regions of difficult access, such as the Amazon rain-forest region. In addition to the evolution of technologies concerning the physical layer of the HF telecommunication systems, there has been a great development of techniques that use machine learning algorithms for audio and image coding. It is believed that all these advances will enable the use of the HF band for communication services in places without telecommunication infrastructure. This work presents recent applications of HF radio for digital links in Brazil, describing the challenges present for the development of telecommunication systems in the HF band.
