Convergence to Equilibrium in the Free Fokker-Planck Equation With a Double-Well Potential

We consider the one-dimensional free Fokker-Planck equation $\frac{\partial μ\_t}{\partial t} = \frac{\partial}{\partial x} \left[ μ\_t \left( \frac12 V' - Hμ\_t \right) \right]$, where $H$ denotes the Hilbert transform and $V$ is a particular double-well quartic potential, namely $V(x) = \frac14 x^4 + \frac{c}{2} x^2$, with $-2 \le c < 0$. We prove that the solution $(μ\_t)\_{t \ge 0}$ of this PDE converges to the equilibrium measure $μ\_V$ as $t$ goes to infinity, which provides a first result of convergence in a non-convex setting. The proof involves free probability and complex analysis techniques.

On The Douglas-Kazakov Phase Transition

We give a rigorous proof of the fact that a phase transition discovered by Douglas and Kazakov in 1993 in the context of two-dimensional gauge theories occurs. This phase transition can be formulated in terms of the Brownian bridge on the unitary group U(N) when N tends to infinity. We explain how it can be understood by considering the asymptotic behaviour of the eigenvalues of the unitary Brownian bridge, and how it can be technically approached by means of Fourier analysis on the unitary group. Moreover, we advertise some more or less classical methods for solving certain minimisation problems which play a fundamental role in the study of the phase transition.

An asymptotic log-Fourier interpretation of the R-transform

We estimate the asymptotics of spherical integrals when the rank of one matrix is finite. We show that it is given in terms of the R-transform of the spectral measure of the full rank matrix and give a new proof of the fact that the R-transform is additive under free convolution. These asymptotics also extend to the case where one matrix has rank one but complex eigenvalue, a result related with the analyticity of the corresponding spherical integrals.

Character expansion method for the first order asymptotics of a matrix integral

The estimation of various matrix integrals as the size of the matrices goes to infinity is motivated by theoretical physics, geometry and free probability questions. On a rigorous ground, only integrals of one matrix or of several matrices with simple quadratic interaction (called AB interaction) could be evaluated so far. In this article, we follow an idea widely developped in the physics litterature, which is based on character expansion, to study more complex interaction. We more specifically consider a model defined in the spirit of the 'dually weighted graph model' studied by V. A. Kazakov, M. Staudacher and T. Wynter, but with a cutoff function such that the matrix integral and its character expansion converge. We prove that the free energy of this model converges as the size of the matrices go to infinity and study the saddle points of the limit.
