Dissipative Phase Transition in the Open Quantum Rabi Model

We demonstrate that the open quantum Rabi model (QRM) exhibits a second-order dissipative phase transition (DPT) and propose a method to observe this transition with trapped ions. The interplay between the ultrastrong qubit-oscillator coupling and the oscillator damping brings the system into a steady-state with a diverging number of excitations, in which a DPT is allowed to occur even with a finite number of system components. The universality class of the open QRM, modified from the closed QRM by a Markovian bath, is identified by finding critical exponents and scaling functions using the Keldysh functional integral approach. We propose to realize the open QRM with two trapped ions where the coherent coupling and the rate of dissipation can be individually controlled and adjusted over a wide range. Thanks to this controllability, our work opens a possibility to investigate potentially rich dynamics associated with a dissipative phase transition.

Spin-Mechanical Scheme with Color Centers in Hexagonal Boron Nitride Membranes

Recently observed quantum emitters in hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) membranes have a potential for achieving high accessibility and controllability thanks to the lower spatial dimension. Moreover, these objects naturally have a high sensitivity to vibrations of the hosting membrane due to its low mass density and high elasticity modulus. Here, we propose and analyze a spin-mechanical system based on color centers in a suspended hBN mechanical resonator. Through group theoretical analyses and ab-initio calculation of the electronic and spin properties of such a system, we identify a spin doublet ground state and demonstrate that a spin-motion interaction can be engineered which enables ground state cooling of the mechanical resonator. We also present a toolbox for initialization, rotation, and readout of the defect spin qubit. As a result the proposed setup presents the possibility for studying a wide range of physics. To illustrate its assets, we show that a fast and noise resilient preparation of a multicomponent cat state and a squeezed state of the mechanical resonator is possible; the latter is achieved by realizing the extremely detuned, ultrastrong coupling regime of the Rabi model, where a phonon superradiant phase transition is expected to occur.

Protected ultrastrong coupling regime of the two-photon quantum Rabi model with trapped ions

We propose a robust realization of the two-photon quantum Rabi model in a trapped-ion setting based on a continuous dynamical decoupling scheme. In this manner the magnetic dephasing noise, which is identified as the main obstacle to achieve long time coherent dynamics in ion-trap simulators, can be safely eliminated. More specifically, we investigate the ultrastrong coupling regime of the two-photon quantum Rabi model whose realization in trapped ions involves second-order sideband processes. Hence, the resulting dynamics becomes unavoidably slow and more exposed to magnetic noise requiring an appropriate scheme for its elimination. Furthermore, we discuss how dynamical decoupling methods take a dual role in our protocol, namely they remove the main source of decoherence from the dynamics while actively define the parameter regime of the simulated model.

Metastability in the driven-dissipative Rabi model

We explore the long-time dynamics of Rabi model in a driven-dissipative setting and show that, as the atom-cavity coupling strength becomes larger than the cavity frequency, a new time scale emerges. This time scale, much larger than the natural relaxation time of the atom and the cavity, leads to long-lived metastable states susceptible to being observed experimentally. By applying a Floquet-Liouville approach to the time-dependent master equation, we systematically investigate the set of possible metastable states. We find that the properties of the metastable states can differ drastically from those of the steady state and relate these properties to the energy spectrum of the Rabi Hamiltonian.

Fate of photon blockade in the deep strong coupling regime

We investigate the photon emission properties of the driven-dissipative Rabi model in the so-called ultrastrong and deep strong coupling regimes, where the atom-cavity coupling rate $g$ becomes comparable or larger than the cavity frequency $ω_c$. By solving numerically the master equation in the dressed-state basis, we compute the output field correlation functions in the steady-state for a wide range of coupling rates. We find that, as the atom-cavity coupling strength increases, the system undergoes multiple transitions in the photon statistics. In particular, a first sharp anti-bunching to bunching transition, occurring at $g\sim0.45ω_c$, leading to the breakdown of the photon blockade due to the counter-rotating terms, is shown to be the consequence of a parity shift in the energy spectrum. A subsequent revival of the photon blockade and the emergence of the quasi-coherent statistics, for even larger coupling rates, are attributed to an interplay between the nonlinearity in the energy spectrum and the transition rates between the dressed states.

Probing the Dynamics of Superradiant Quantum Phase Transition in a Single Trapped-Ion

We demonstrate that the quantum phase transition (QPT) of the Rabi model and critical dynamics near the QPT can be probed in the setup of a single trapped ion. We first show that there exists equilibrium and non-equilibrium universal functions of the Rabi model by finding a proper rescaling of the system parameters and observables. We then propose a scheme that can faithfully realize the Rabi model in the limit of a large ratio of the effective atomic transition frequency to the oscillator frequency using a single trapped-ion and therefore the QPT. It is demonstrated that the predicted universal functions can indeed be observed based on our scheme. Finally, the effects of realistic noise sources on probing the universal functions in experiments are examined.

Excited-state quantum phase transition in the Rabi model

The Rabi model, a two-level atom coupled to a harmonic oscillator, can undergo a second-order quantum phase transition (QPT) [M. -J. Hwang et al, Phys. Rev. Lett. 115, 180404 (2015)]. Here we show that the Rabi QPT accompanies critical behavior in the higher energy excited states, i.e., the excited-state QPT (ESQPT). We derive analytic expressions for the semiclassical density of states, which shows a logarithmic divergence at a critical energy eigenvalue in the broken symmetry (superradiant) phase. Moreover, we find that the logarithmic singularities in the density of states leads to singularities in the relevant observables in the system such as photon number and atomic polarization. We corroborate our analytical semiclassical prediction of the ESQPT in the Rabi model with its numerically exact quantum mechanical solution.

Quantum Phase Transition in the Finite Jaynes-Cummings Lattice Systems

Phase transitions are commonly held to occur only in the thermodynamical limit of large number of system components. Here we exemplify at the hand of the exactly solvable Jaynes-Cummings (JC) model and its generalization to finite JC-lattices that finite component systems of coupled spins and bosons may exhibit quantum phase transitions (QPT). For the JC-model we find a continuous symmetry-breaking QPT, a photonic condensate with a macroscopic occupation as the ground state and a Goldstone mode as a low-energy excitation. For the two site JC-lattice we show analytically that it undergoes a Mott-insulator to superfluid QPT. We identify as the underlying principle of the emergence of finite size QPT the combination of increasing atomic energy and increasing interaction strength between the atom and the bosonic mode which allows for the exploration of an increasingly large portion of the infinite dimensional Hilbert space of the bosonic mode. This suggests that finite system phase transitions will be present in a broad range of physical systems.

Recurrent delocalization and quasi-equilibration of photons in coupled circuit QED systems

We explore the photon population dynamics in two coupled circuit QED systems. For a sufficiently weak inter-cavity photon hopping, as the photon-cavity coupling increases, the dynamics undergoes double transitions first from a delocalized to a localized phase and then from the localized to another delocalized phase. The latter delocalized phase is distinguished from the former one; instead of oscillating between the two cavities, the photons rapidly quasi-equilibrate over the two cavities. These intrigues are attributed to an interplay between two qualitatively distinctive nonlinear behaviors of the circuit QED systems in the utrastrong coupling regime, whose distinction has been widely overlooked.

Quantum Phase Transition and Universal Dynamics in the Rabi model

We consider the Rabi Hamiltonian which exhibits a quantum phase transition (QPT) despite consisting only of a single-mode cavity field and a two-level atom. We prove QPT by deriving an exact solution in the limit where the atomic transition frequency in unit of the cavity frequency tends to infinity. The effect of a finite transition frequency is studied by analytically calculating finite-frequency scaling exponents as well as performing a numerically exact diagonalization. Going beyond this equilibrium QPT setting, we prove that the dynamics under slow quenches in the vicinity of the critical point is universal, that is, the dynamics is completely characterized by critical exponents. Our analysis demonstrates that the Kibble-Zurek mechanism can precisely predict the universal scaling of residual energy for a model without spatial degrees of freedom. Moreover, we find that the onset of the universal dynamics can be observed even with a finite transition frequency.

Large-Scale Schrödinger-Cat States and Majorana Bound States in Coupled Circuit-QED Systems

We have studied the low-lying excitations of a chain of coupled circuit-QED systems, and report several intriguing properties of its two nearly degenerate ground states. The ground states are Schrödinger cat states at a truly large scale, involving maximal entanglement between the resonator and the qubit, and are mathematically equivalent to Majorana bound states. With a suitable design of physical qubits, they are protected against local fluctuations and constitute a non-local qubit. Further, they can be probed and manipulated coherently by attaching an empty resonator to one end of the circuit-QED chain.

Coupling Circuit Resonators Among Themselves and To Nitrogen-Vacancy Centers in Diamond

We propose a scheme to couple NV centers in diamond through coplanar waveguide resonators. The central conductor of the resonator is split into several pieces which are coupled strongly with each other via simple capacitive junctions or superconducting Josephson junctions. The NV centers are then put at the junctions. The discontinuity at the junctions induces a large local magnetic field, with which the NV centers are strongly coupled to the circuit resonator. The coupling strength $g$ between the resonator and the NV center is of order of $g/2π\sim 1$--$30\unit{MHz}$.

Variational study of a two-level system coupled to a harmonic oscillator in a ultrastrong coupling regime

The nonclassical behaviors of a two-level system coupled to a harmonic oscillator is investigated in the ultrastrong coupling regime. We revisit the variational solution of the ground state and find that the existing solution do not account accurately for nonclassical effects such squeezing. We suggest a new trial wave function and demonstrate that it has an excellent accuracy on the quantum correlation effects as well as on energy.

Superconducting Qubits Coupled to Torsional Resonators

We propose a scheme of strong and tunable coupling between a superconducting phase qubit and nanomechanical torsional resonator. In our scheme the torsional resonator directly modulates the largest energy scale (the Josephson coupling energy) of the phase qubit, and the coupling strength is very large. We analyze the quantum correlation effects in the torsional resonator as a result of the strong coupling to the phase qubit.

Pair Tunneling and shot noise through a single molecule in a strong electron-phonon coupling

We investigate the electronic transport through a single molecule in a strong electron-phonon coupling regime. Based on a particle-hole transformation which is made suitable for non-equilibrium situation, we treat the pair tunneling and cotunneling on an equal footing. We propose an experimental setup to enhance the visibility of pair tunneling, which has no Franck-Condon suppression. We also discuss the shot noise characteristics.

Practical scheme for non-postselection entanglement concentration using linear optical elements

We report a practical non-postselection entanglement concentration scheme in which a maximally entangled Bell-state photon pair is produced from two pairs of partially (or non-maximally) entangled photons. Since this scheme is built only upon linear optical elements and does not require photon-number resolving detectors, it has immediate applications in experimental implementations of various quantum information protocols which require two-photon Bell-states.
