On the Spectrum of the XXZ-chain at roots of unity

In a recent paper (cond-mat/0009279), Fabricius and McCoy studied the spectrum of the spin 1/2 XXZ-model at Delta = (q+q^{-1})/2 and q^{2N}=1 for integer N >1. They found a certain pattern of degeneracies and linked it to the sl(2)-loop symmetry present in the commensurable spin sector (N divides S^z). We show that the degeneracies are due to zero-energy, transparent excitations, the cyclic bound states. These exist both in commensurable and incommensurable sectors, indicating a symmetry, of which sl(2)-loop is a partial manifestation. Our approach treats both sectors on even footing and yields an analytical expression for the degeneracies in the case N = 3.

Conductivity of a clean one-dimensional wire

We study the low-temperature low-frequency conductivity sigma of an interacting one dimensional electron system in the presence of a periodic potential. The conductivity is strongly influenced by conservation laws, which, we argue, need be violated by at least two non-commuting Umklapp processes to render sigma finite. The resulting dynamics of the slow modes is studied within a memory matrix approach, and we find exponential increase as the temperature is lowered, sigma = (Delta n)^2 e^{T_0/(N T)} close to commensurate filling M/N, Delta n=n-M/N << 1, and sigma = e^{(T'_0/T)^{2/3}} elsewhere.

Magnetism and superconductivity in underscreened Kondo chains

We present a one dimensional model of electrons coupled to localized moments of spin $S\ge 1$ in which magnetism and superconductivity interplay in a nontrivial manner. This model has a non-Fermi liquid ground state of the chiral spin liquid type. A non-conventional odd-frequency pairing is shown to be the dominant instability of the system, together with antiferromagnetism of the local moments. We argue that this model captures the physics of the Kondo-Heisenberg spin S=1 chain, in the limit of strong Kondo coupling. Finally, we discuss briefly the effect of interchain coupling.

Low energy dynamics of the one dimensional multichannel Kondo-Heisenberg Lattice

We determine exactly the fixed point Hamiltonian of the one dimensional multichannel Kondo-Heisenberg lattice model for any number of channels N>=2. An anomalous singlet with non trivial internal dynamics is generated. We compute the correlation functions of the various conventional and unconventional order parameters of the system and find that for N<=4 the composite order parameter induce the dominant instabilities.

Low-energy behavior of the spin-tube and spin-orbital models

The low-energy effective Hamiltonian of three coupled spin chains with periodic boundary conditions (spin tube) is expressed, in the limit of strong interchain coupling, in terms of XXZ chains coupled by biquadratic exchange interaction. A similar class of models was proposed to describe the coupling of spins to orbital degrees of freedom in materials such as NaV2O5. We investigate these models by means of bosonization and renormalization group techniques, and find that the generic phase diagram comprises a gapless region and gapped regions consisting of a spin liquid phase and various antiferromagnetic phases. We discuss the properties of the spin liquid phase, in particular the nature of the ground state and of the elementary excitations above it. We then study the effect of a magnetic field, and conclude that a strong enough magnetic field can suppress the dimerized phase leading to a two component Luttinger liquid. The critical exponents at the transition gapful-gapless are calculated and shown to be non-universal in the spin tube case as well as in the generic spin orbital problem.

Critical behaviour of a spin-tube model in a magnetic field

We show that the low-energy physics of the spin-tube model in presence of a critical magnetic field can be described by a broken SU(3) spin chain. Using the Lieb-Schultz-Mattis Theorem we characterize the possible magnetization plateaus and study the critical behavior in the region of transition between the plateaus m=1/2 and m=3/2 by means of renormalization group calculations performed on the bosonized effective continuum field theory. We show that in certain regions of the parameter space of the effective theory the system remains gapless, and we compute the spin-spin correlation functions in these regions. We also discuss the possibility of a plateau at m=1, and show that although there exists in the continuum theory a term that might cause the appearance of a plateau there, such term is unlikely to be relevant. This conjecture is proved by DMRG techniques. The modifications of the three-leg ladder Hamiltonian that might show plateaus at m =1,5/6,7/6 are discussed, and we give the expected form of correlation functions on the m=1 plateau.

Co-operative Kondo Effect in the two-channel Kondo Lattice

We discuss the possibility of a co-operative Kondo effect driven by channel interference in a Kondo lattice where local moments are coupled to a single Fermi sea via two orthogonal scattering channels. In this situation, the channel quantum number is not conserved. We argue that the absence of channel conservation causes the Kondo effect in the two channels to constructively interfere, giving rise to a superconducting condensate of composite pairs, formed between the local moments and the conduction electrons. Our arguments are based on the observation that a heavy Fermi surface gives rise to zero modes for Kondo singlets to fluctuate between screening channels of different symmetry, producing a divergent composite pair susceptibility. Secondary screening channels couple to these divergent fluctuations, promoting an instability into a state with long-range composite order. We present detailed a detailed mean-field theory for this superconducting phase, and discuss the possible implications for heavy fermion physics.

Physical picture of the gapped excitation spectrum of the one-dimensional Hubbard model

A simple picture for the spectrum of the one-dimensional Hubbard model is presented using a classification of the eigenstates based on an intuitive bound-state Bethe-Ansatz approach. This approach allows us to prove a "string hypothesis" for complex momenta and derive an exact formulation of the Bethe-Ansatz equations including all states. Among other things we show that all gapped eigenstates have the Bethe-Ansatz form, contrary to assertions in the literature. The simplest excitations in the upper Hubbard band are computed: we find an unusual dispersion close to half-filling.

Bound States in the One-dimensional Hubbard Model

The Bethe Ansatz equations for the one-dimensional Hubbard model are reexamined. A new procedure is introduced to properly include bound states. The corrected equations lead to new elementary excitations away from half-filling.

Low temperature transport in the XXZ model

We present evidence suggesting that spin transport in the gapless phase of the S=1/2 XXZ model is ballistic rather than diffusive. We map the model onto a spinless fermion model whose charge stiffness determines the spin transport of the original model. By means of exact numerical diagonalisation and finite size scaling we study both the stiffness and the level statistics. We show that the stiffness is non-zero at low temperatures so that the transport is ballistic. Our results suggest that the non-zero stiffness is due to the fact that even in the presence of Umklapp scattering a non-zero fraction of states remain degenerate in the thermodynamic limit.

The generalized multi-channel Kondo model: Thermodynamics and fusion equations

The SU(N) generalization of the multi-channel Kondo model with arbitrary rectangular impurity representations is considered by means of the Bethe Ansatz. The thermodynamics of the model is analyzed by introducing modified fusion equations for the impurity, leading to a simple description of the different IR fixed points of the theory. The entropy at zero temperature is discussed; in particular the overscreened case is explained in terms of quantum group representation.

Co-operative Two-Channel Kondo Effect

We discuss how the properties of a single-channel Kondo lattice model are modified by additional screening channels. Contrary to current wisdom, additional screening channels appear to constitute a relevant perturbation which destabilizes the Fermi liquid. When a heavy Fermi surface develops, it generates zero modes for Kondo singlets to fluctuate between screening channels of different symmetry, producing a divergent composite pair susceptibility. Additional screening channels couple to these divergent fluctuations, promoting an instability into a state with long-range composite order.
