Microscopic theories of neutrino-^{12}C reactions

In view of the recent experiments on neutrino oscillations performed by the LSND and KARMEN collaborations as well as of future experiments, we present new theoretical results of the flux averaged $^{12}C(ν_e,e^-)^{12}N$ and $^{12}C(ν_μ,μ^-)^{12}N$ cross sections. The approaches used are charge-exchange RPA, charge-exchange RPA among quasi-particles (QRPA) and the Shell Model. With a large-scale shell model calculation the exclusive cross sections are in nice agreement with the experimental values for both reactions. The inclusive cross section for $ν_μ$ coming from the decay-in-flight of $π^+$ is $15.2 \times 10^{-40} cm^2$ to be compared to the experimental value of $12.4 \pm 0.3 \pm 1.8 \times 10^{-40} cm^2$, while the one due to $ν_{e}$ coming from the decay-at-rest of $μ^+$ is $16.4 \times 10^{-42} cm^2$ which agrees within experimental error bars with the measured values. The shell model prediction for the decay-in-flight neutrino cross section is reduced compared to the RPA one. This is mainly due to the different kind of correlations taken into account in the calculation of the spin modes and partially due to the shell-model configuration basis which is not large enough, as we show using arguments based on sum-rules.

Core-Polarization Contribution to the Nuclear Anapole Moment

The importance of core contributions to the anapole moment in nuclei is examined. A model of the core-polarization correction is presented. The model is based on the coupling of the valence particles to the spin-dipole $J=1^{-}$ giant resonances of the core. A shell-model calculation of this correction is presented. The single-particle moments are calculated with Woods-Saxon and Skyrme Hartree Fock radial wave functions, and the general issues associated with nuclear configuration mixing are discussed.

The Effects of Deformation on Isovector Electromagnetic and Weak Transition Strengths

The summed strength for transitions from the ground state of $^{12}C$ via the operators $\vec{s}t, \vec{\ell}t, rY't, r[Y's]^λt$ and $r[Y'\ell]^λt$ are calculated using the $ΔN = 0$ rotational model. If we choose the z component of the isospin operator $t_{z}$, the above operators are relevant to electromagnetic transitions; if we choose $t_{+}$ they are relevant to weak transitions such as neutrino capture. In going from the spherical limit to the asymptotic (oblate) limit the strength for the operator $\vec{s} t$ decreases steadily to zero; the strength for the operator $\vec{\ell}τ$ (scissors mode) increases by a factor of three. For the last three operators - isovector dipole, spin dipole and orbital dipole (including the twist mode) it is shown that the summed strength is independant of deformation. The main difference in the behavior is that for the first two operators we have in-shell transitions whereas for the last three operators the transitions are out of shell.

Renormalization of the one-body off-diagonal Coulomb field in nuclei

Isospin violation effects in nuclei are investigated within a microscopic approach which takes into account the influence of the residual strong interaction on the Coulomb interaction. The renormalization of the off-diagonal Coulomb field acting within a nucleus, by the residual strong interaction is calculated analytically in a simplified RPA. From the expression for the suppression coefficient of the isospin violating part of the Coulomb field, the isospin violating spreading widths of isobaric analog states are derived. The resulting reduction of the width is in agreement with the data on the isospin symmetry restoration and with some earlier evaluations of the isospin violating spreading widths.

Neutrino-nucleus reactions on ^{12}C and ^{16}O

Exclusive and inclusive $(ν_μ, μ^-), (ν_e, e^-)$ cross-sections and $μ^-$-capture rates are calculated for ^{12}C and ^{16}O using the consistent random phase approximation (RPA) and pairing model. After a pairing correction is introduced to the RPA results the flux-averaged theoretical $(ν_μ, μ^-), (ν_e, e^-)$ cross-sections and $μ^-$-capture rates in $^{12}$C are in good agreement with experiment. In particular when one takes into account the experimental error bars, the recently measured range of values for the $(ν_μ, μ^-)$ cross-section is in agreement with the present theoretical results. Predictions of $(ν_μ, μ^-)$ and $(ν_e, e^-)$ cross-sections in ^{16}O are also presented.

Enhanced T-odd P-odd Electromagnetic Moments in Reflection Asymmetric Nuclei

Collective P- and T- odd moments produced by parity and time invariance violating forces in reflection asymmetric nuclei are considered. The enhanced collective Schiff, electric dipole and octupole moments appear due to the mixing of rotational levels of opposite parity. These moments can exceed single-particle moments by more than two orders of magnitude. The enhancement is due to the collective nature of the intrinsic moments and the small energy separation between members of parity doublets. In turn these nuclear moments induce enhanced T- and P- odd effects in atoms and molecules. First a simple estimate is given and then a detailed theoretical treatment of the collective T-, P- odd electric moments in reflection asymmetric, odd-mass nuclei is presented and various corrections evaluated. Calculations are performed for octupole deformed long-lived odd-mass isotopes of Rn, Fr, Ra, Ac and Pa and the corresponding atoms. Experiments with such atoms may improve substantially the limits on time reversal violation.

Structure of Low-Energy Collective $0^{-}$-States in Doubly Magic Nuclei and Matrix Elements of the P-odd and P- and T-odd Weak Interaction

The structure of the collective low-energy $J^π=0^{-}$ (T=0 and T=1) modes is studied for a doubly magic nucleus in a schematic analytic model of RPA. The $0^{-}$ phonon states ($T= 0,1$) lie at energies $E_{T=0}(0^{-}) \alt ω$ and $E_{T=1}(0^{-}) > ω$, where $ω$ is the oscillator frequency. The matrix elements of P-odd and P- and T-odd weak one-body potentials connecting the ground state to these $0^{-}$-states, $W_{coll}$, are enhanced by the factor $\sim 2 (\fracω{E})^{1/2}A^{1/3} \sim 10$ as compared to the single-particle value $w_{sp}$ what can result in values $|W_{coll}| \sim 20-30 eV$ if standard values of DDH parameters are used for $w_{sp}$. Similar enhancement arises in the P- and T-odd case.

Collective T- and P- Odd Electromagnetic Moments in Nuclei with Octupole Deformations

Parity and time invariance violating forces produce collective P- and T- odd moments in nuclei with static octupole deformation. Collective Schiff moment, electric octupole and dipole and also magnetic quadrupole appear due to the mixing of rotational levels of opposite parity and can exceed single-particle moments by more than a factor of 100. This enhancement is due to two factors, the collective nature of the intrinsic moments and the small energy separation between members of parity doublets. The above moments induce T- and P- odd effects in atoms and molecules. Experiments with such systems may improve substantially the limits on time reversal violation.

Nearby Doorways, Parity Doublets and Parity Mixing in Compound Nuclear States

We discuss the implications of a doorway state model for parity mixing in compound nuclear states. We argue that in order to explain the tendency of parity violating asymmetries measured in $^{233}$Th to have a common sign, doorways that contribute to parity mixing must be found in the same energy neighbourhood of the measured resonance. The mechanism of parity mixing in this case of nearby doorways is closely related to the intermediate structure observed in nuclear reactions in which compound states are excited. We note that in the region of interest ($^{233}$Th) nuclei exhibit octupole deformations which leads to the existence of nearby parity doublets. These parity doublets are then used as doorways in a model for parity mixing. The contribution of such mechanism is estimated in a simple model.

Theory of parity violation in compound nuclear states; one particle aspects

In this work we formulate the reaction theory of parity violation in compound nuclear states using Feshbach's projection operator formalism. We derive in this framework a complete set of terms that contribute to the longitudinal asymmetry measured in experiments with polarized epithermal neutrons. We also discuss the parity violating spreading width resulting from this formalism. We then use the above formalism to derive expressions which hold in the case when the doorway state approximation is introduced. In applying the theory we limit ourselves in this work to the case when the parity violating potential and the strong interaction are one-body. In this approximation, using as the doorway the giant spin-dipole resonance and employing well known optical potentials and a time-reversal even, parity odd one-body interaction we calculate or estimate the terms we derived. In our calculations we explicitly orthogonalize the continuum and bound wave functions. We find the effects of orthogonalization to be very important. Our conclusion is that the present one-body theory cannot explain the average longitudinal asymmetry found in the recent polarized neutron experiments. We also confirm the discrepancy, first pointed out by Auerbach and Bowman, that emerges, between the calculated average asymmetry and the parity violating spreading width, when distant doorways are used in the theory.

Correlation between the quenching of total GT+ strength and the increase of E2 strength

Relations between the total beta+ Gamow-Teller (GT+) strength and the E2 strength are further examined. It is found that in shell-model calculations for N=Z nuclei, in which changes in deformation are induced by varying the single-particle energies, the total GT+ or GT- strength decreases monotonically with increasing values of the B(E2) from the ground state to the first excited J=2+ state. Similar trends are also seen for the double GT transition amplitude (with some exceptions) and for the spin part of the total M1 strength as a function of B(E2).
