Influence of photon-assisted tunneling on heat flow in a normal metal - superconductor tunnel junction

We have investigated theoretically the influence of an AC drive on heat transport in a hybrid normal metal - superconductor tunnel junction in the photon-assisted tunneling regime. We find that the useful heat flux out from the normal metal is always reduced as compared to its magnitude under the static and quasi-static drive conditions. Our results are useful to predict the operative conditions of AC driven superconducting electron refrigerators.

Low-voltage current noise in long quantum SINIS junctions

The current noise in long SINIS junctions at low temperatures is sensitive to the population of the sub-gap states which is far from equilibrium even at low bias voltages. Nonequilibrium distribution establishes due to an interplay between voltage-driven inter-level Landau-Zener transitions and intra-level inelastic relaxation. We show that the Fano factor is enhanced drastically, being proportional to the number of times which particle can fly along the Andreev trajectory before it escapes from the level due to inelastic scattering. Combining the dc current and noise measurements one can fully characterize the non-equilibrium kinetics in SINIS junctions.

Dynamics of vortices and interfaces in superfluid 3He

Rapid new developments have occurred in superfluid hydrodynamics since the discovery of a host of unusual phenomena which arise from the diverse structure and dynamics of quantized vortices in 3He superfluids. These have been studied in rotating flow with NMR measurements which at best provide an accurate mapping of the different types of topological defects in the superfluid order parameter field. Four observations are reviewed here: (1) the interplay of different vortex structures at the first order interface between the two major superfluid 3He phases, 3He-A and 3He-B; (2) the shear flow instability of this phase boundary, which is now known as the superfluid Kelvin-Helmholtz instability; (3) the hydrodynamic transition from turbulent to regular vortex dynamics as a function of increasing dissipation in vortex motion; and (4) the peculiar propagation of vortex lines in a long rotating column which even in the turbulent regime occurs in the form of a helically twisted vortex state behind a well-developed vortex front. The consequences and implications of these observations are discussed, as inferred from measurements, numerical calculations, and analytical work.

Enhanced vortex heat conductance in mesoscopic superconductors

Electronic heat transport along the flux lines in a long ballistic mesoscopic superconductor cylinder with a radius of the order of several coherence lengths is investigated theoretically using both semiclassical approach and the full quantum-mechanical analysis of the Bogoliubov--de Gennes equations. The semiclassical approach is constructed analogously to the Landauer transport theory in mesoscopic conductors employing the idea that heat is carried by the quasiparticle modes propagating along the vortex core. We show that the vortex heat conductance in a mesoscopic sample is strongly enhanced as compared to its value for a bulk superconductor; it grows as the cylinder radius decreases. This unusual behavior results from a strongly increased number of single-particle transport modes due to giant mesoscopic oscillations of energy levels, which originate from the interplay between the Andreev reflection at the vortex core boundary and the normal reflection at the sample edge. We derive the exact quantum-mechanical expression for the heat conductance and solve the Bogoliubov--de Gennes equations numerically. The results of numerical computations confirm the qualitative Landauer-type picture and allow us to take into account the partial reflections of excitations. We analyze the effect of surface imperfections on the spectrum of core excitations. We show that the giant oscillations of core levels and thus the essential features of the heat transport characteristic to ideal mesoscopic samples hold for a broad class of surface imperfections as well.

Resonance energy and charge pumping through quantum SINIS contacts

We propose a mechanism of quantum pumping mediated by the spectral flow in a voltage-biased SINIS quantum junction and realized via the sequential closing of the minigaps in the energy spectrum in resonance with the Josephson frequency. We show that the dc current exhibits giant peaks at rational voltages.

Giant oscillations of energy levels in mesoscopic superconductors

The interplay of geometrical and Andreev quantization in mesoscopic superconductors leads to giant mesoscopic oscillations of energy levels as functions of the Fermi momentum and/or sample size. Quantization rules are formulated for closed quasiparticle trajectories in the presence of normal scattering at the sample boundaries. Two generic examples of mesoscopic systems are studied: (i) one dimensional Andreev states in a quantum box, (ii) a single vortex in a mesoscopic cylinder.

Nonequilibrium phenomena in multiple normal-superconducting tunnel heterostructures

Using the nonequilibrium theory of superconductivity with the tunnel Hamiltonian, we consider a mesoscopic NISINISIN heterostructure, i.e., a structure consisting of five intermittent normal-metal (N) and superconducting (S) regions separated by insulating tunnel barriers (I). Applying the bias voltage between the outer normal electrodes one can drive the central N island very far from equilibrium. Depending on the resistance ratio of outer and inner tunnel junctions, one can realize either effective electron cooling in the central N island or create highly nonequilibrium energy distributions of electrons in both S and N islands. These distributions exhibit multiple peaks at a distance of integer multiples of the superconducting chemical potential. In the latter case the superconducting gap in the S islands is strongly suppressed as compared to its equilibrium value.

Loss of Andreev Backscattering in Superconducting Quantum Point Contacts

We study effects of magnetic field on the energy spectrum in a superconducting quantum point contact. The supercurrent induced by the magnetic field leads to intermode transitions between the electron waves that pass and do not pass through the constriction. The latter experience normal reflections which couple the states with opposite momenta inside the quantum channel and create a minigap in the energy spectrum that depends on the magnetic field.

Vortex avalanches and the onset of superfluid turbulence

Quantized circulation, absence of Galilean invariance due to a clamped normal component, and the vortex mutual friction are the major factors that make superfluid turbulence behave in a way different from that in classical fluids. The model is developed for the onset of superfluid turbulence that describes the initial avalanche-like multiplication of vortices into a turbulent vortex tangle.

Re-entrant localization of single particle transport in disordered Andreev wires

We study effects of disorder on the low energy single particle transport in a normal wire surrounded by a superconductor. We show that the heat conductance includes the Andreev diffusion decreasing with increase in the mean free path $\ell $ and the diffusive drift produced by a small particle-hole asymmetry, which increases with increasing $\ell$. The conductance thus has a minimum as a function of $\ell$ which leads to a peculiar re-entrant localization as a function of the mean free path.

Transition to superfluid turbulence governed by an intrinsic parameter

Hydrodynamic flow in both classical and quantum fluids can be either laminar or turbulent. To describe the latter, vortices in turbulent flow are modelled with stable vortex filaments. While this is an idealization in classical fluids, vortices are real topologically stable quantized objects in superfluids. Thus superfluid turbulence is thought to hold the key to new understanding on turbulence in general. The fermion superfluid 3He offers further possibilities owing to a large variation in its hydrodynamic characteristics over the experimentally accessible temperatures. While studying the hydrodynamics of the B phase of superfluid 3He, we discovered a sharp transition at 0.60Tc between two regimes, with regular behaviour at high-temperatures and turbulence at low-temperatures. Unlike in classical fluids, this transition is insensitive to velocity and occurs at a temperature where the dissipative vortex damping drops below a critical limit. This discovery resolves the conflict between existing high- and low-temperature measurements in 3He-B: At high temperatures in rotating flow a vortex loop injected into superflow has been observed to expand monotonically to a single rectilinear vortex line, while at very low temperatures a tangled network of quantized vortex lines can be generated in a quiescent bath with a vibrating wire. The solution of this conflict reveals a new intrinsic criterion for the existence of superfluid turbulence.

Single-electron transport through the vortex core levels in clean superconductors

We develop a microscopic theory of single-electron transport in N-S-N hybrid structures in the presence of applied magnetic field introducing vortex lines in a superconductor layer. We show that vortex cores in a thick and clean superconducting layer are similar to mesoscopic conducting channels where the bound core states play the role of transverse modes. The transport through not very thick layers is governed by another mechanism, namely by resonance tunneling via vortex core levels. We apply our method to calculation of the thermal conductance along the magnetic field.

Spectral flow in superconducting point contacts

We find that multiple Andreev reflections mediating the transport in superconducting point contacts are strongly affected by a small amount of impurities in the area of the contact. We also argue that the model based on Zener transitions within independent conducting channels is not suitable for kinetic processes in multichannel contacts.

Impurity band in clean superconducting weak links

Weak impurity scattering produces a narrow band with a finite density of states near the phase difference $ϕ=π$ in the mid-gap energy spectrum of a macroscopic superconducting weak link. The equivalent distribution of transmission coefficients of various cunducting quantum channels is found.

Vortex lines or sheets - what is formed in dynamic drives?

In isotropic macroscopic quantum systems vortex lines can be formed while in anisotropic systems also vortex sheets are possible. Based on measurements of superfluid 3He-A, we present the principles which select between these two competing forms of quantized vorticity: sheets displace lines if the frequency of the external field exceeds a critical limit. The resulting topologically stable state consists of multiple vortex sheets and has much faster dynamics than the state with vortex lines.

Vortex Dynamics and the Problem of the Transverse Force in Clean Superconductors and Fermi Superfluids

We review the basic ideas and results on the vortex dynamics in clean superfluid Fermi systems. The forces acting on moving vortices are discussed including the problem of the transverse force which was a matter of confusion for quite a time. Finally, we formulate the equations of the vortex dynamics which include all the forces and the inertial term associated with excitations bound to the moving vortex.

Magnetic quantization of electronic states in d-wave superconductors

We derive a general quasiclassical approach for long-range magnetic-field quantization effects in superconductors. The method is applied to superclean d-wave superconductors in the mixed state. We study the delocalized states with energies $ε\gg Δ_{0}\sqrt{H/H_{c2}}$. We find that the energy spectrum consists of narrow energy bands whose centers are located at the Landau levels calculated in absence of the vortex potential. We show that transitions between the states belonging to the different Landau levels give rise to resonances in the a.c. quasiparticle conductivity and in the a.c. vortex friction.

Coexistence of Single and Double-Quantum Vortex Lines

We discuss the configurations in which singly and doubly quantized vortex lines may coexist in a rotating superfluid. General principles of energy minimization lead to the conclusion that in equilibrium the two vortex species segregate within a cylindrical vortex cluster in two coaxial domains where the singly quantized lines are in the outer annular region. This is confirmed with simulation calculations on discrete vortex lines. Experimentally the coexistence can be studied in rotating superfluid $^3$He-A. With cw NMR techniques we find the radial distribution of the two vortex species to depend on how the cluster is prepared: (i) By cooling through $T_c$ in rotation, coexistence in the minimum energy configuration is confirmed. (ii) A glassy agglomerate is formed if one starts with an equilibrium cluster of single-quantum vortex lines and adds to it sequentially double-quantum lines, by increasing the rotation velocity in the superfluid state. This proves that the energy barriers, which separate different cluster configurations, are too high for metastabilities to anneal.
