Quantifying thermal and driven magnon populations with femtosecond noise correlation spectroscopy

Precise knowledge of the total number of magnons, including both coherent and incoherent (e.g. thermal) excitations, is imperative for the advancement of fundamental spin-wave physics and the development of next-generation magnonic devices. In particular, quantifying magnons is key to understanding magnon transport phenomena, the nonlinear regime, or ultrafast magnetization dynamics. Typically, incoherent magnons are accessed by frequency-domain techniques, which lack the temporal resolution required for ultrafast processes, while ultrafast time-domain methods are generally sensitive only to the coherent dynamics. In this work, we demonstrate that femtosecond noise correlation spectroscopy enables a fully quantitative, time-domain measurement of both thermal and coherently excited magnon modes in bismuth-substituted yttrium iron garnet driven by a free-running microwave. We model the experimental data and extract the magnon number by simulating the magnon band structure of the sample, the magneto-optical response function, and the optical spot size used in the experiment. Our analysis establishes a connection between magnon mode calculations and experimentally accessible magnetic properties and fiducially reproduces the waveform and amplitude of the magneto-optical correlation signal for different experimental conditions. These results open a new pathway towards the optical tomography of magnon modes in non-linear or non-equilibrium conditions and can be readily extended to study ultrafast incoherent dynamics in other condensed matter systems.

Crossover from Universal Depinning to Free Domain-Wall Dynamics in Ultrathin Iron Garnet Films

Magnetic domain walls display universal, disorder-controlled elastic dynamics at low drive, and texture-governed free motion at high drive. Here, we establish the crossover mechanism between these two regimes. Using experiments in ultrathin epitaxial iron garnet films and Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert simulations, including disorder, thermal, and internal texture effects, we uncover a disorder- and temperature-dependent precessional flow that bridges pinned and free dynamics. We further demonstrate that the exceptionally low pinning in garnets arises from the weak coupling between domain walls and disorder, together with a correlation length that exceeds the wall width.

Sub-micrometer near-field focusing of spin waves in ultrathin YIG films

We experimentally demonstrate tight focusing of a spin wave beam excited in extended nanometer-thick films of Yttrium Iron Garnet by a simple microscopic antenna functioning as a single-slit near-field lens. We show that the focal distance and the minimum transverse width of the focal spot can be controlled in a broad range by varying the frequency/wavelength of spin waves and the antenna geometry. The experimental data are in good agreement with the results of numerical simulations. Our findings provide a simple solution for implementation of magnonic nano-devices requiring local concentration of the spin-wave energy.

FMR studies of exchange-coupled multiferroic polycrystalline Pt/BiFeO$_3$/Ni$_{81}$Fe$_{19}$/Pt heterostructures

An experimental study of the in-plane azimuthal behaviour and frequency dependence of the ferromagnetic resonance field and the resonance linewidth as a function of BiFeO$_3$ thickness is carried out in a polycrystalline exchange-biased BiFeO$_3$/Ni$_{81}$Fe$_{19}$ system. The magnetization decrease of the Pt/BiFeO$_3$/Ni$_{81}$Fe$_{19}$/Pt heterostructures with BiFeO$_3$ thickness deduced from static measurements has been confirmed by dynamic investigations. Ferromagnetic resonance measurements have shown lower gyromagnetic ratio in a perpendicular geometry compared with that of a parallel geometry. The monotonous decrease of gyromagnetic ratio in a perpendicular geometry as a function of the BiFeO$_3$ film thickness seems to be related to the spin-orbit interactions due to the neighbouring Pt film at its interface with Ni$_{81}$Fe$_{19}$ film. The in-plane azimuthal shape of the total linewidth of the uniform mode shows isotropic behaviour that increases with BiFeO$_3$ thickness. The study of the frequency dependence of the resonance linewidth in a broad band of 3 to 35 GHz has allowed the determination of intrinsic and extrinsic contributions to the relaxation as function of BiFeO$_3$ thickness in perpendicular geometries. In our system the magnetic relaxation is dominated by the spin-pumping mechanism due to the presence of Pt. The insertion of BiFeO$_3$ between Pt and Ni$_{81}$Fe$_{19}$ attenuates the spin-pumping damping at one interface.
