The (Z_2)^3 symmetry of the non-tri-bimaximal pattern for the neutrino mass matrix

In view of the recent neutrino oscillation data pointing to a non-vanishing value for the smallest mixing angle ($θ_z$), we derive and find explicit realizations of the $(Z_2)^3$ flavor symmetry which characterizes, for the neutrino mass matrix, uniquely a variant of the tripartite form, originally conceived to lead to the tri-bimaximal mixing with $θ_z=0$, so that to allow now for a non-tri-bimaximal pattern with non-zero $θ_z$. We impose this flavor symmetry in a setting including the charged leptons and we see that it can make room, through higher order terms involving new SM-singlet scalars, for the mass hierarchy of charged leptons. Moreover, within type-I seesaw mechanism augmented with the flavor symmetry, certain patterns occurring in both the Dirac and the Majorana neutrino mass matrices can accommodate all types of mass hierarchies in the effective neutrino mass matrix, but no lepton/baryon asymmetry can be generated. Finally, we discuss how type-II seesaw mechanism, when supplemented with the flavor symmetry, could be used to interpret the observed baryon asymmetry through leptogenesis.

The One-zero Textures of Majorana Neutrino Mass Matrix and Current Experimental Tests

We carry out a complete and systematic study of all the possible one-zero textures for the neutrino mass matrix in light of the recent neutrino oscillation data which hint to a relatively large non-vanishing value for the smallest mixing angle ($θ_z$). We find that all the six possible one-zero textures are able to accommodate the experimental data, with five cases allowing also for non-invertible mass matrices. We present symmetry realizations for all the one-zero singular and non-singular patterns in type-I and type-II seesaw mechanism schemes.

Form Invariance and Symmetry in the Neutrino Mass Matrix

We present the general form of the unitary matrices keeping invariant the Majorana neutrino mass matrix of specific texture suitable for explaining oscillation data. In the case of the Tri-bimaximal pattern with two degenerate masses we give a specific realization of the underlying $U(1)$ symmetry which can be uplifted to a symmetry in a complete theory including charged leptons. For this, we present a model with three light SM-like Higgs doublets and one heavy Higgs triplet and find that one can accommodate the hierarchy of the charged lepton masses. The lepton mass spectrum can also be achieved in another model extending the SM with three SM-singlet scalars transforming non trivially under the flavor symmetry. We discuss how such a model has room for generating enough baryon asymmetry through leptogenesis in the framework of Type-I and II seesaw mechanisms.

(Z_2)^3 Symmetry of the Tripartite Model

We derive in a simple way the $(Z_2)^3$ symmetry which characterizes uniquely the phenomenologically successful tripartite form leading to the tribimaximal mixing in the neutrino mass matrix. We impose this symmetry in a setup including the charged leptons and find that it can accommodate all the possible patterns of lepton masses in the framework of type-I and type-II seesaw mechanisms. We also discuss the possibility of generating enough baryon asymmetry through lepton-lepton asymmetry.

One vanishing minor in the neutrino mass matrix

We study a specific texture of the neutrino mass matrix, namely the models with one $2\times 2$ subdeterminant equal to zero. We carry out a complete phenomenological analysis with all possible relevant correlations. Every pattern of the six possible ones is found able to accommodate the experimental data, with three cases allowing also for non-invertible mass matrices. We present symmetry realizations for all the models.

Zero minors of the neutrino mass matrix

We examine the possibility that a certain class of neutrino mass matrices, namely those with two independent vanishing minors in the flavor basis, regardless of being invertible or not, is sufficient to describe current data. We compute generic formulae for the ratios of the neutrino masses and for the Majorana phases. We find that seven textures with two vanishing minors can accommodate the experimental data. We present an estimate of the mass matrix for these patterns. All the possible textures can be dynamically generated through the seesaw mechanism augmented with a discrete Abelian symmetry.

The Van der Waals interactions and the photoelectric effect in noncommutative quantum mechanics

We calculate the long-range Vanderwaals force and the photoelectric cross section in a \nc set up. While we argue that non-commutativity effects could not be discerned for the Vanderwaals interactions, the result for the photoelectric effect shows deviation from the usual commutative one, which in principle can be used to put bounds on the space-space non-commutativity parameter.

On Inflation and Variation of the Strong Coupling Constant

Variation of constants in the very early universe can generate inflation. We consider a scenario where the strong coupling constant was changing in time and where the gluon condensate underwent a phase transition ending the inflation.

On Flux Compactification and Moduli Stabilization

We study the effect of adding charged matter fields to both D3 and D7 branes in type IIB string theory compactification with fluxes. Generically, charged matter fields induce additional terms to the Kahler form, the superpotential and the D-terms. These terms allow for minima with positive or zero cosmological constants, even in the absence of non-perturbative effects. We show this result first by decoupling the dilaton field along the lines of the KKLT, and second by reincorporating it in the action with the Kahler moduli.

Fermion Masses and Mixing in Four and More Dimensions

We give an overview of recent progress in the study of fermion mass and flavor mixing phenomena. Mass matrix ansatze are considered within the SM and SUSY GUTs where some predictive frameworks based on SU(5) and SO(10) are reviewed. We describe a variety of schemes to construct quark mass matrices in extra dimensions focusing on four major classes: models with the SM residing on 3-brane, models with universal extra dimensions, models with split fermions and models with warped extra dimensions. We outline how realistic patterns of quark mass matrices could be derived from orbifold models in heterotic superstring theory. Finally, we address the fermion mass problem in intersecting D-branes scenarios, and present models with D6-branes able to give a good quantitatively description of quark masses and mixing. The role of flavor/CP violation problem as a probe of new physics is emphasized.

A Time Varying Strong Coupling Constant as a Model of Inflationary Universe

We consider a scenario where the strong coupling constant was changing in the early universe. We attribute this change to a variation in the colour charge within a Bekenstein-like model. Treating the vacuum gluon condensate $ $ as a free paramete r, we could generate inflation with the required properties to solve the fluctuation and other standard cosmology problems. A possible approach to end the inflation is suggested.

Fermion Masses and Mixing in Intersecting Branes Scenarios

We study the structure of Yukawa couplings in intersecting D6-branes wrapping a factorizable 6-torus compact space T^6. Models with MSSM-like spectrum are analyzed and found to fail in predicting the quark mass spectrum because of the way in which the family structure for the left-handed, right-handed quarks and, eventually, the Higgses is `factorized' among the different tori. In order to circumvent this, we present a model with three supersymmetric Higgs doublets which satisfies the anomaly cancellation condition in a more natural way than the previous models, where quarks were not treated universally regarding their branes assignments, or some particular branes were singled out being invariant under orientifold projection. In our model, the family structures for the left, right quarks, left leptons and the Higgses arise from one of the tori and can naturally lead to universal strength Yukawa couplings which accommodate the quark mass hierarchy and the mixing angles.

Bekenstein model and the time variation of the strong coupling constant

We propose to generalize Bekenstein model for the time variation of the fine structure "constant" $α_{em}$ to QCD strong coupling constant $α_S$. We find that, except for a ``fine tuned'' choice of the free parameters, the extension can not be performed trivially without being in conflict with experimental constraints and this rules out $α_S$ variability. This is due largely to the huge numerical value of the QCD vacuum gluon condensate when compared to the matter density of the universe.

QCD Sum Rule Analysis of Leading Twist Non-Singlet Operator Matrix Elements

We use QCD sum rules to determine the difference between moments of the non-singlet structure functions. This combination decouples from the singular behaviour of the structure functions near x=1 as calculated in the quark-gluon basis and thus should lead to improved sum rule predictions. However, we find there are still very large errors due to higher order corrections. In order to refine the error analysis, we study the effect of renormalon ambiguities on our QCD sum rules results.

QCD Sum Rules and the Determination of Leading Twist Non-Singlet Operator Matrix Elements

We use QCD sum rules to determine directly the leading-twist non-singlet operator matrix elements based on calculations of three-point correlator functions in configuration space. We find a different result from that obtained by integrating the structure functions' expressions obtained by Belyaev and Ioffe based on calculations of four-point correlators in momentum space. The origin of this discrepancy remains unclear.

Determination of Leading Twist Non-Singlet Operator Matrix Elements by QCD Sum Rules

We use QCD sum rules to determine the twist-two non-singlet operator matrix elements and fixed x structure functions paying particular regard to the estimate of the errors. Particularly for the matrix element determination, we find large uncertainties due to radiative and higher dimension contributions. We consider the origin of these large corrections and comment on their consequences for other operator matrix element determinations.
