The Cuntz semigroup and the radius of comparison of the crossed product by a finite group

Let G be a finite group, let A be an infinite-dimensional stably finite simple unital C*-algebra, and let α\colon G \to Aut (A) be an action of G on A which has the weak tracial Rokhlin property. Let A^α be the fixed point algebra. Then the radius of comparison satisfies rc (A^α) \leq rc (A) and rc ( C* (G, A, α) ) \leq ( 1 / card (G) ) rc (A). The inclusion of A^α in A induces an isomorphism from the purely positive part of the Cuntz semigroup Cu (A^α) to the fixed points of the purely positive part of Cu (A), and the purely positive part of Cu ( C* (G, A, α) ) is isomorphic to this semigroup. We construct an example in which G is the two element group, A is a simple unital AH algebra, αhas the Rokhlin property, rc (A) > 0, rc (A^α) = rc (A), and rc (C* (G, A, α)) = (1/2) rc (A).

L^p operator algebras with approximate identities I

We initiate an investigation into how much the existing theory of (nonselfadjoint) operator algebras on a Hilbert space generalizes to algebras acting on L^p spaces. In particular we investigate the applicability of the theory of real positivity, which has recently been useful in the study of L^2-operator algebras and Banach algebras, to algebras of bounded operators on Lp spaces.

Classification of $L^p$ AF algebras

We define spatial $L^p$ AF algebras for $p \in [1, \infty) \setminus \{ 2 \}$, and prove the following analog of the Elliott AF algebra classification theorem. If $A$ and $B$ are spatial $L^p$ AF algebras, then the following are equivalent: 1) $A$ and $B$ have isomorphic scaled preordered $K_0$-groups. 2) $A \cong B$ as rings. 3) $A \cong B$ (not necessarily isometrically) as Banach algebras. 4) $A$ is isometrically isomorphic to $B$ as Banach algebras. 5) $A$ is completely isometrically isomorphic to $B$ as matrix normed Banach algebra. As background, we develop the theory of matrix normed $L^p$ operator algebras, and show that there is a unique way to make a spatial $L^p$ AF algebra into a matrix normed $L^p$ operator algebra. We also show that any countable scaled Riesz group can be realized as the scaled preordered $K_0$-group of a spatial $L^p$ AF algebra.

Relating properties of crossed products to those of fixed point algebras

For a number of properties of C*-algebras, including real rank zero, stable rank one, pure infiniteness, residual hereditary infiniteness, the combination of pure infiniteness and the ideal property, the property of being an AT algebra with real rank zero, and stability under tensoring with a strongly selfabsorbing C*-algebra, we prove the following. Consider an arbitrary action of a second countable compact abelian group on a separable C*-algebra. Then the fixed point algebra under the action has the given property if and only if the crossed product has the same property.

Permanence of stable rank one for centrally large subalgebras and crossed products by minimal homeomorphisms

We define centrally large subalgebras of simple unital C*-algebras, strengthening the definition of large subalgebras in previous work. We prove that if A is any infinite dimensional simple separable unital C*-algebra which contains a centrally large subalgebra with stable rank one, then A has stable rank one. We also prove that large subalgebras of crossed product type are automatically centrally large. We use these results to prove that if X is a compact metric space which has a surjective continuous map to the Cantor set, and h is a minimal homeomorphism of X, then C* (Z, X, h) has stable rank one, regardless of the dimension of X or the mean dimension of h. In particular, the Giol-Kerr examples give crossed products with stable rank one but which are not stable under tensoring with the Jiang-Su algebra and are therefore not classifiable in terms of the Elliott invariant.

Centrally Large Subalgebras and Tracial ${\mathcal{Z}}$-Absorption

Let $A$ be a simple infinite dimensional stably finite unital C*-algebra, and let $B$ be a centrally large subalgebra of $A$. We prove that if $A$ is tracially ${\mathcal{Z}}$-absorbing if and only if $B$ is tracially ${\mathcal{Z}}$-absorbing. If $A$ and $B$ are also separable and nuclear, we prove that $A$ is ${\mathcal{Z}}$-absorbing if and only if $B$ is ${\mathcal{Z}}$-absorbing.

The weak ideal property and topological dimension zero

Following up on previous work, we prove a number of results for C*-algebras with the weak ideal property or topological dimension zero, and some results for C*-algebras with related properties. Some of the more important results include: The weak ideal property implies topological dimension zero. For a separable C*-algebra~A, topological dimension zero is equivalent to RR (O_2 \otimes A) = 0, to D \otimes A having the ideal property for some (or any) Kirchberg algebra~D, and to A being residually hereditarily in the class of all C*-algebras B such that O_{\infty} \otimes B contains a nonzero projection. Extending the known result for Z_2, the classes of C*-algebras with topological dimension zero, with the weak ideal property, and with residual (SP) are closed under crossed products by arbitrary actions of abelian 2-groups. If A and B are separable, one of them is exact, A has the ideal property, and B has the weak ideal property, then A \otimes_{min} B has the weak ideal property. If X is a totally disconnected locally compact Hausdorff space and A is a C_0 (X)-algebra all of whose fibers have one of the weak ideal property, topological dimension zero, residual (SP), or the combination of pure infiniteness and the ideal property, then A also has the corresponding property (for topological dimension zero, provided A is separable). Topological dimension zero, the weak ideal property, and the ideal property are all equivalent for a substantial class of separable C*-algebras including all separable locally AH algebras. The weak ideal property does not imply the ideal property for separable Z-stable C*-algebras. We give other related results, as well as counterexamples to several other statements one might hope for.

Simple nuclear C*-algebras not equivariantly isomorphic to their opposites

We exhibit examples of simple separable nuclear C*-algebras, along with actions of the circle group and outer actions of the integers, which are not equivariantly isomorphic to their opposite algebras. In fact, the fixed point subalgebras are not isomorphic to their opposites. The C*-algebras we exhibit are well behaved from the perspective of structure and classification of nuclear C*-algebras: they are unital C*-algebras in the UCT class, with finite nuclear dimension. One is an AH-algebra with unique tracial state and absorbs the CAR algebra tensorially. The other is a Kirchberg algebra.

Rokhlin dimension: obstructions and permanence properties

This paper is a further study of finite Rokhlin dimension for actions of finite groups and the integers on C*-algebras, introduced by the first author, Winter, and Zacharias. We extend the definition of finite Rokhlin dimension to the nonunital case. This definition behaves well with respect to extensions, and is sufficient to establish permanence of finite nuclear dimension and Z-absorption. We establish K-theoretic obstructions to the existence of actions of finite groups with finite Rokhlin dimension (in the commuting tower version). In particular, we show that there are no actions of any nontrivial finite group on the Jiang-Su algebra or on the Cuntz algebra O_\infty with finite Rokhlin dimension in this sense.

Large subalgebras

We define and study large and stably large subalgebras of simple unital C*-algebras. The basic example is the orbit breaking subalgebra of a crossed product by Z, as follows. Let X be an infinite compact metric space, let h be a minimal homeomorphism of X, and let Y be a closed subset of X. Let u be the standard unitary in C* (Z, X, h). The Y-orbit breaking subalgebra is the subalgebra of C* (Z, X, h) generated by C (X) and all elements f u for f in C (X) such that f vanishes on Y. If intersects each orbit of h at most once, then the Y-orbit breaking subalgebra is large in C* (Z, X, h). Large subalgebras obtained via generalizations of this construction have appeared in a number of places, and we unify their theory in this paper. We prove the following results for an infinite dimensional simple unital C*-algebra A and a stably large subalgebra B of A: B is simple and infinite dimensional. If B is stably finite then so is A, and if B is purely infinite then so is A. The restriction maps from the tracial states of A to the tracial states of B and from the normalized 2-quasitraces on A to the normalized 2-quasitraces on B are bijective. When A is stably finite, the inclusion of B in A induces an isomorphism on the semigroups that remain after deleting from the Cuntz semigroups of A and B all the classes of nonzero projections. B and A have the same radius of comparison.

Borel complexity and automorphisms of C*-algebras

We show that if $A$ is $\mathcal{Z}$, $\mathcal{O}_2$, $\mathcal{O}_{\infty}$, a UHF algebra of infinite type, or the tensor product of a UHF algebra of infinite type and $\mathcal{O}_{\infty}$, then the conjugation action $\mathrm{Aut}(A) \curvearrowright \mathrm{Aut}(A)$ is generically turbulent for the point-norm topology. We moreover prove that if $A$ is either (i) a separable C*-algebra which is stable under tensoring with $\mathcal{Z}$ or $\mathcal{K}$, or (ii) a separable ${\mathrm{II}}_1$ factor which is McDuff or a free product of ${\mathrm{II}}_1$ factors, then the approximately inner automorphisms of $A$ are not classifiable by countable structures.

Semiprojectivity with and without a group action

The equivariant version of semiprojectivity was recently introduced by the first author. We study properties of this notion, in particular its relation to ordinary semiprojectivity of the crossed product and of the algebra itself. We show that equivariant semiprojectivity is preserved when the action is restricted to a cocompact subgroup. Thus, if a second countable compact group acts semiprojectively on a C*-algebra $A$, then $A$ must be semiprojective. This fails for noncompact groups: we construct a semiprojective action of the integers on a nonsemiprojective C*-algebra. We also study equivariant projectivity and obtain analogous results, however with fewer restrictions on the subgroup. For example, if a discrete group acts projectively on a C*-algebra $A$, then $A$ must be projective. This is in contrast to the semiprojective case. We show that the crossed product by a semiprojective action of a finite group on a unital C*-algebra is a semiprojective C*-algebra. We give examples to show that this does not generalize to all compact groups.

Algebraic K-theory and properly infinite C*-algebras

We show that several known results about the algebraic K-theory of tensor products of algebras with the C*-algebra of compact operators in Hilbert space remain valid for tensor products with any properly infinite C*-algebra.

A Simple Separable Exact C*-Algebra not Anti-isomorphic to Itself

We give an example of an exact, stably finite, simple. separable C*-algebra D which is not isomorphic to its opposite algebra. Moreover, D has the following additional properties. It is stably finite, approximately divisible, has real rank zero and stable rank one, has a unique tracial state, and the order on projections over D is determined by traces. It also absorbs the Jiang-Su algebra Z, and in fact absorbs the 3^{\infty} UHF algebra. We can also explicitly compute the K-theory of D, namely K_0 (D) = Z[1/3] with the standard order, and K_1 (D) = 0, as well as the Cuntz semigroup of D.

Isomorphism, nonisomorphism, and amenability of L^p UHF algebras

In a previous paper, we introduced L^p UHF algebras for p in [1, \infty). We concentrated on the spatial L^p UHF algebras, which are classified up to isometric isomorphism by p and the scaled ordered K_0-group. In this paper, we concentrate on a larger class, the L^p UHF algebras of tensor product type constructed using diagonal similarities. Such an algebra is still simple and has the same K-theory as the corresponding spatial L^p UHF algebra. For each choice of p and the K-theory, we provide uncountably many nonisomorphic such algebras. We further characterize the spatial algebras among them. In particular, if A is one of these algebras, then A is isomorphic (not necessarily isometrically) to a spatial L^p UHF algebra if and only if A is amenable as a Banach algebra, also if and only if A has approximately inner tensor flip. These conditions are also equivalent to a natural numerical condition defined in terms of the ingredients used to construct the algebra.

Crossed products of $L^p$ operator algebras and the K-theory of Cuntz algebras on $L^p$ spaces

For $p \in [1, \infty),$ we define and study full and reduced crossed products of algebras of operators on $σ$-finite $L^p$ spaces by isometric actions of second countable locally compact groups. We give universal properties for both crossed products. When the group is abelian, we prove the existence of a dual action on the full and reduced $L^p$ operator crossed products. When the group is discrete, we construct a conditional expectation to the original algebra which is faithful in a suitable sense. For a free action of a discrete group on a compact metric space $X,$ we identify all traces on the reduced $L^p$ operator crossed product, and if the action is also minimal we show that the reduced $L^p$ operator crossed product is simple. We prove that the full and reduced $L^p$ operator crossed products of an amenable $L^p$ operator algebra by a discrete amenable group are again amenable. We prove a Pimsner-Voiculescu exact sequence for the K-theory of reduced $L^p$ operator crossed products by ${\mathbb{Z}}.$ We show that the $L^p$ analogs ${\mathcal{O}}_d^p$ of the Cuntz algebras ${\mathcal{O}}_d$ are stably isomorphic to reduced $L^p$ operator crossed products of stabilized $L^p$ UHF algebra by ${\mathbb{Z}},$ and show that $K_0 ({\mathcal{O}}_d^p) \cong {\mathbb{Z}} / (d - 1) {\mathbb{Z}}$ and $K_1 ({\mathcal{O}}_d^p) = 0.$

Simplicity of UHF and Cuntz algebras on $L^p$~spaces

We prove that, for $p \in [1, \infty),$ and integers $d$ at least 2, the $L^p$ analog ${\mathcal{O}}_d^p$ of the Cuntz algebra ${\mathcal{O}}_d$ is a purely infinite simple amenable Banach algebra. The proof requires what we call the spatial $L^p$ UHF algebras, which are analogs of UHF algebras acting on $L^p$ spaces. As for the usual UHF C*-algebras, they have associated supernatural numbers. For fixed $p \in [1, \infty),$ we prove that any spatial $L^p$ UHF algebra is simple and amenable, and that two such algebras are isomorphic if and only if they have the same supernatural number (equivalently, the same scaled ordered $K_0$-group). For distinct $p_1, p_2 \in [1, \infty),$ we prove that no spatial $L^{p_1}$ UHF algebra is isomorphic to any spatial $L^{p_2}$ UHF algebra.
