Novel Magnetic Block States in Low-Dimensional Iron-Based Superconductors

Inelastic neutron scattering recently confirmed the theoretical prediction of a $\uparrow\uparrow\downarrow\downarrow$-magnetic state along the legs of quasi-one-dimensional (quasi-1D) iron-based ladders in the orbital-selective Mott phase (OSMP). We show here that electron-doping of the OSMP induces a whole class of novel block-states with a variety of periodicities beyond the previously reported $π/2$ pattern. We discuss the magnetic phase diagram of the OSMP regime that could be tested by neutrons once appropriate quasi-1D quantum materials with the appropriate dopings are identified.

Targeting Multiple States in the Density Matrix Renormalization Group with The Singular Value Decomposition

In the Density Matrix Renormalization Group (DMRG), multiple states must be included in the density matrix when properties beyond ground state are needed, including temperature dependence, time evolution, and frequency-resolved response functions. How to include these states in the density matrix has been shown in the past. But it is advantageous to replace the density matrix by a singular value decomposition (SVD) instead, because of improved performance, and because it enables multiple targeting in the matrix product state description of the DMRG. This paper shows how to target multiple states using the SVD; it analyzes the implication of local symmetries, and discusses typical performance improvements using the example of the Hubbard model's photo-emission spectra on a ladder geometry.

Search for Boosted Dark Matter Interacting With Electrons in Super-Kamiokande

A search for boosted dark matter using 161.9 kiloton-years of Super-Kamiokande IV data is presented. We search for an excess of elastically scattered electrons above the atmospheric neutrino background, with a visible energy between 100 MeV and 1 TeV, pointing back to the Galactic Center or the Sun. No such excess is observed. Limits on boosted dark matter event rates in multiple angular cones around the Galactic Center and Sun are calculated. Limits are also calculated for a baseline model of boosted dark matter produced from cold dark matter annihilation or decay.

Doping evolution of charge and spin excitations in two-leg Hubbard ladders: comparing DMRG and RPA+FLEX results

We study the magnetic and charge dynamical response of a Hubbard model in a two-leg ladder geometry using the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method and the random phase approximation within the fluctuation-exchange approximation (RPA+FLEX). Our calculations reveal that RPA+FLEX can capture the main features of the magnetic response from weak up to intermediate Hubbard repulsion for doped ladders, when compared with the numerically exact DMRG results. However, while at weak Hubbard repulsion both the spin and charge spectra can be understood in terms of weakly-interacting electron-hole excitations across the Fermi surface, at intermediate coupling DMRG shows gapped spin excitations at large momentum transfer that remain gapless within the RPA+FLEX approximation. For the charge response, RPA+FLEX can only reproduce the main features of the DMRG spectra at weak coupling and high doping levels, while it shows an incoherent character away from this limit. Overall, our analysis shows that RPA+FLEX works surprisingly well for spin excitations at weak and intermediate Hubbard $U$ values even in the difficult low-dimensional geometry such as a two-leg ladder. Finally, we discuss the implications of our results for neutron scattering and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering experiments on two-leg ladder cuprate compounds.

A Measurement of the Tau Neutrino Cross Section in Atmospheric Neutrino Oscillations with Super-Kamiokande

Using 5,326 days of atmospheric neutrino data, a search for atmospheric tau neutrino appearance has been performed in the Super-Kamiokande experiment. Super-Kamiokande measures the tau normalization to be 1.47$\pm$0.32 under the assumption of normal neutrino hierarchy, relative to the expectation of unity with neutrino oscillation. The result excludes the hypothesis of no-tau-appearance with a significance level of 4.6$σ$. The inclusive charged-current tau neutrino cross section averaged by the tau neutrino flux at Super-Kamiokande is measured to be $(0.94\pm0.20)\times 10^{-38}$ cm$^{2}$. The measurement is consistent with the Standard Model prediction, agreeing to within 1.5$σ$.

Signatures of pairing in the magnetic excitation spectrum of strongly correlated ladders

Magnetic interactions are widely believed to play a crucial role in the microscopic mechanism leading to high critical temperature superconductivity. It is therefore important to study the signatures of pairing in the magnetic excitation spectrum of simple models known to show unconventional superconducting tendencies. Using the Density Matrix Renormalization Group technique, we calculate the dynamical spin structure factor $S({\bf k},ω)$ of a generalized $t-U-J$ Hubbard model away from half-filling in a two-leg ladder geometry. The addition of $J$ enhances pairing tendencies. We analyze quantitatively the signatures of pairing in the magnetic excitation spectra. We found that the superconducting pair-correlation strength, that can be estimated independently from ground state properties, is closely correlated with the integrated low-energy magnetic spectral weight in the vicinity of $(π,π)$. In this wave-vector region, robust spin incommensurate features develop with increasing doping. The branch of the spectrum with rung direction wave-vector $k_{rung}=0$ does not change substantially with doping where pairing dominates, and thus plays a minor role. We discuss the implications of our results for neutron scattering experiments, where the spin excitation dynamics of hole-doped quasi-one dimensional magnetic materials can be measured, and also address implications for recent resonant inelastic X-ray scattering experiments.

Pairing Tendencies in a Two-orbital Hubbard Model in One Dimension

The recent discovery of superconductivity under high pressure in the ladder compound BaFe$_2$S$_3$ has opened a new field of research in iron-based superconductors with focus on quasi one-dimensional geometries. In this publication, using the Density Matrix Renormalization Group technique, we study a two-orbital Hubbard model defined in one dimensional chains. Our main result is the presence of hole binding tendencies at intermediate Hubbard $U$ repulsion and robust Hund coupling $J_H/U=0.25$. Binding does not occur neither in weak coupling nor at very strong coupling. The pair-pair correlations that are dominant near half-filling, or of similar strength as the charge and spin correlation channels, involve hole-pair operators that are spin singlets, use nearest-neighbor sites, and employ different orbitals for each hole. The Hund coupling strength, presence of robust magnetic moments, and antiferromagnetic correlations among them are important for the binding tendencies found here.

Search for Neutrinos in Super-Kamiokande associated with Gravitational Wave Events GW150914 and GW151226

We report the results from a search in Super-Kamiokande for neutrino signals coincident with the first detected gravitational wave events, GW150914 and GW151226, using a neutrino energy range from 3.5 MeV to 100 PeV. We searched for coincident neutrino events within a time window of $\pm$500 seconds around the gravitational wave detection time. Four neutrino candidates are found for GW150914 and no candidates are found for GW151226. The remaining neutrino candidates are consistent with the expected background events. We calculated the 90\% confidence level upper limits on the combined neutrino fluence for both gravitational wave events, which depends on event energy and topologies. Considering the upward going muon data set (1.6 GeV - 100 PeV) the neutrino fluence limit for each gravitational wave event is 14 - 37 (19 - 50) cm$^{-2}$ for muon neutrinos (muon antineutrinos), depending on the zenith angle of the event. In the other data sets, the combined fluence limits for both gravitational wave events range from 2.4$\times 10^{4}$ to 7.0$\times 10^{9}$ cm$^{-2}$.
