Fermi liquid theory: a renormalization group point of view

We show how Fermi liquid theory results can be systematically recovered using a renormalization group (RG) approach. Considering a two-dimensional system with a circular Fermi surface, we derive RG equations at one-loop order for the two-particle vertex function $Γ$ in the limit of small momentum (${\bf Q}$) and energy ($Ω$) transfer and obtain the equation which determines the collective modes of a Fermi liquid. The density-density response function is also calculated. The Landau function (or, equivalently, the Landau parameters $F_l^s$ and $F_l^a$) is determined by the fixed point value of the $Ω$-limit of the two-particle vertex function (${Γ^Ω}^*$). We show how the results obtained at one-loop order can be extended to all orders in a loop expansion. Calculating the quasi-particle life-time and renormalization factor at two-loop order, we reproduce the results obtained from two-dimensional bosonization or Ward Identities. We discuss the zero-temperature limit of the RG equations and the difference between the Field Theory and the Kadanoff-Wilson formulations of the RG. We point out the importance of $n$-body ($n\geq 3$) interactions in the latter.

Metal-insulator transition in highly conducting oriented polymers

We suggest that highly conducting oriented polymers with a fibril structure can be modeled by a regular lattice of disordered metallic wires with a random first-neighbor interwire coupling which mimics the cross-links between fibrils. We show that such a model can be described by a non-linear sigma model. Within a one-loop self-consistent approximation, we determine the position of the metal-insulator transition as a function of interwire cross-links concentration, interwire coupling and number of polymer chains in a wire.

Renormalization group approach to Fermi Liquid Theory

We show that the renormalization group (RG) approach to interacting fermions at one-loop order recovers Fermi liquid theory results when the forward scattering zero sound (ZS) and exchange (ZS$'$) channels are both taken into account. The Landau parameters are related to the fixed point value of the ``unphysical'' limit of the forward scattering vertex. We specify the conditions under which the results obtained at one-loop order hold at all order in a loop expansion. We also emphasize the similarities between our RG approach and the diagrammatic derivation of Fermi liquid theory.

Mean-field theory of a quasi-one-dimensional superconductor in a high magnetic field

At high magnetic field, the semiclassical approximation which underlies the Ginzburg-Landau (GL) theory of the mixed state of type II superconductors breaks down. In a quasi-1D superconductor (weakly coupled chains system) with an {\it open Fermi surface}, a high magnetic field stabilizes a cascade of superconducting phases which ends in a strong reentrance of the superconducting phase. The superconducting state evolves from a triangular Abrikosov vortex lattice in the semiclassical regime towards a Josephson vortex lattice in the reentrant phase. We study the properties of these superconducting phases from a microscopic model in the mean-field approximation. The critical temperature is calculated in the quantum limit approximation (QLA) where only Cooper logarithmic singularities are retained while less divergent terms are ignored. The effects of Pauli pair breaking (PPB) and impurity scattering are taken into account. The Gor'kov equations are solved in the same approximation but ignoring the PPB effect. We derive the GL expansion of the free energy. We obtain the specific heat jump at the transition, the sign of the magnetization and the quasi-particle excitation spectrum. The calculation is extended beyond the QLA taking into account all the pairing channels and the validity of the QLA is discussed in detail.

Larkin-Ovchinnikov-Fulde-Ferrell state in quasi-one-dimensional superconductors

The properties of a quasi-one-dimensional (quasi-1D) superconductor with {\it an open Fermi surface} are expected to be unusual in a magnetic field. On the one hand, the quasi-1D structure of the Fermi surface strongly favors the formation of a non-uniform state (Larkin-Ovchinnikov-Fulde-Ferrell (LOFF) state) in the presence of a magnetic field acting on the electron spins. On the other hand, a magnetic field acting on an open Fermi surface induces a dimensional crossover by confining the electronic wave-functions wave-functions along the chains of highest conductivity, which results in a divergence of the orbital critical field and in a stabilization at low temperature of a cascade of superconducting phases separated by first order transistions. In this paper, we study the phase diagram as a function of the anisotropy. We discuss in details the experimental situation in the quasi-1D organic conductors of the Bechgaard salts family and argue that they appear as good candidates for the observation of the LOFF state, provided that their anisotropy is large enough. Recent experiments on the organic quasi-1D superconductor (TMTSF)$_2$ClO$_4$ are in agreement with the results obtained in this paper and could be interpreted as a signature of a high-field superconducting phase. We also point out the possibility to observe a LOFF state in some quasi-2D organic superconductors.

Thermodynamics and Excitation Spectrum of a Quasi-One-Dimensional Superconductor in a High Magnetic Field

At high magnetic field, the semiclassical approximation which underlies the Ginzburg-Landau theory of the mixed state of type II superconductors breaks down. In a quasi-1D superconductor with an {\it open Fermi surface}, a high magnetic field stabilizes a cascade of superconducting phases which ends in a strong reentrance of the superconducting phase. From a microscopic mean-field model, we determine the thermodynamics and the excitation spectrum of these quantum superconducting phases.
