SN 2022erq: A Superluminous Thermonuclear Supernova with Escalating Preexplosion Mass Loss

We present a photometric and spectroscopic study of the superluminous Type Ia supernova SN 2022erq. Its early spectra, dominated by iron-group elements with weak intermediate-mass features, might indicate highly efficient nuclear burning, broadly similar to that inferred for some overluminous SNe Ia. The rapid emergence and persistence of narrow Balmer emission lines superposed on this iron-rich spectrum provide clear evidence of long-lived interaction with a hydrogen-rich circumstellar medium (CSM), establishing SN 2022erq as a member of the rare Ia-CSM class. SN 2022erq reached a peak bolometric luminosity of about 8 x 10^43 erg/s and exhibited an exceptionally slow post-peak decline, indicating that its light curve is dominated by long-duration ejecta-CSM interaction. By combining H-alpha diagnostics with bolometric light-curve modeling, we reconstruct the pre-explosion mass-loss history of the progenitor. The mass-loss rate escalated by one order of magnitude over the final decades, rising from about 0.04 to about 0.6 solar masses per year. This surge produced a massive, extended CSM shell of about 3 solar masses out to about 3.5 x 10^16 cm. The young stellar environment (about 100 Myr) together with this substantial, extensive CSM points to a progenitor system consisting of a white dwarf and an intermediate-mass companion that underwent increasing mass loss prior to explosion.

PTF12os and iPTF13bvn. Two stripped-envelope supernovae from low-mass progenitors in NGC 5806

We investigate two stripped-envelope supernovae (SNe) discovered in the nearby galaxy NGC 5806 by the (i)PTF. These SNe, designated PTF12os/SN 2012P and iPTF13bvn, exploded at a similar distance from the host-galaxy center. We classify PTF12os as a Type IIb SN based on our spectral sequence; iPTF13bvn has previously been classified as Type Ib having a likely progenitor with zero age main sequence (ZAMS) mass below ~17 solar masses. Our main objective is to constrain the explosion parameters of iPTF12os and iPTF13bvn, and to put constraints on the SN progenitors. We present comprehensive datasets on the SNe, and introduce a new reference-subtraction pipeline (FPipe) currently in use by the iPTF. We perform a detailed study of the light curves (LCs) and spectral evolution of the SNe. The bolometric LCs are modeled using the hydrodynamical code HYDE. We use nebular models and late-time spectra to constrain the ZAMS mass of the progenitors. We perform image registration of ground-based images of PTF12os to archival HST images of NGC 5806 to identify a potential progenitor candidate. Our nebular spectra of iPTF13bvn indicate a low ZAMS mass of ~12 solar masses for the progenitor. The late-time spectra of PTF12os are consistent with a ZAMS mass of ~15 solar masses. We successfully identify a progenitor candidate to PTF12os using archival HST images. This source is consistent with being a cluster of massive stars. Our hydrodynamical modeling suggests that the progenitor of PTF12os had a compact He core with a mass of 3.25 solar masses, and that 0.063 solar masses of strongly mixed 56Ni was synthesized. Spectral comparisons to the Type IIb SN 2011dh indicate that the progenitor of PTF12os was surrounded by a hydrogen envelope with a mass lower than 0.02 solar masses. We also find tentative evidence that the progenitor of iPTF13bvn could have been surrounded by a small amount of hydrogen.

The Type IIP SN 2007od in UGC 12846: from a bright maximum to dust formation in the nebular phase

Ultraviolet (UV), optical and near infrared (NIR) observations of the type IIP supernova (SN) 2007od are presented, covering from the maximum light to the late phase, allowing to investigate in detail different physical phenomena in the expanding ejecta. These data turn this object into one of the most peculiar IIP ever studied. The early light curve of SN 2007od is similar to that of a bright IIPs with a short plateau, a bright peak (MV = -18 mag), but a very faint optical light curve at late time. However, with the inclusion of mid infrared (MIR) observations during the radioactive decay we have estimate a M(56Ni) ~ 2\times10^-2 M\odot. Modeling the bolometric light curve, ejecta expansion velocities and black-body temperature, we estimate a total ejected mass was 5 - 7.5 M\odot with a kinetic energy of at least 0.5 \times 10^51 erg. The early spectra reveal a boxy Hα profile and high velocities features of the Balmer series that suggest interaction between the ejecta and a close circum-stellar matter (CSM). SN 2007od may be, therefore, an intermediate case between a Type IIn SN and a typical Type IIP SN. Also late spectra show a clear evidence of CSM and the presence of dust formed inside the ejecta. The episodes of mass loss short before explosion, the bright plateau, along with the relatively small amount of 56Ni and the faint [O I] observed in the nebular spectra are consistent with a super-asympthotic giant branch (super-AGB) progenitor (M~9.7 - 11 M\odot).
