The white dwarf binary pathways survey - XI. The Gaia-GALEX UV Excess Sample for systems within 350 pc

White dwarfs (WDs) with F, G or K type binary companions are the last common ancestor to a zoo of exotic phenomena. Finding a clean sample of such systems is difficult, as WDs in such binaries are usually outshone at optical wavelengths by their non-degenerate companion. It is useful to have a sample of such binaries - they can be studied to investigate binary evolution, as they may have undergone a previous phase of mass transfer. Using Gaia data release 3 and GALEX, we compile a sample of 2597 candidate WD + FGK systems within 350 pc. These were identified via their ultraviolet excesses relative to MESA Isochrones and Stellar Tracks (MIST) model predictions consistent with the Gaia parameters of their non-degenerate companions. We estimate the mass, surface gravity and effective temperature of the WDs by fitting the excess ultraviolet flux to models, or through interpolation where only one ultraviolet band was available. We also estimate the age of the system where possible, by comparing against any wide WD companions in higher-order stellar systems, or by checking if the system is a member of a cluster. On comparing against Simbad, we estimate the level of contamination within our sample to be between 10-35 per cent. This is a valuable sample for investigating WD + FGK binaries, particularly those containing hotter WDs (Teff,WD >~ 25 kK), and systems with post-main sequence companions.

The DESI Data Release 1 white dwarf catalogue

The Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument is conducting a redshift survey, mapping the universe in three dimensions to measure the history of cosmic expansion. As well as extragalactic objects, it is targeting millions of Milky Way stars, including white dwarfs. Using Data Release 1 we assemble the largest catalogue of spectroscopically-confirmed white dwarfs to date, whose straightforward selection function enables statistically-robust population studies. We visually inspect and fit models to spectra of 63968 objects, finding 44409 white dwarfs. We present their spectral classifications, atmospheric parameters and radial velocities. We assess survey completeness and uniformity, identify potential spectral contamination caused by flux from nearby sources entering the fibre, and assign confidence scores to our classifications to facilitate selection of statistical and observational samples. We present spectra representing most white dwarf classes, common and exotic. We conclude with recommendations and warnings regarding the use of the catalogue.

4MOST Consortium Survey 3: Milky Way Disc and Bulge Low-Resolution Survey (4MIDABLE-LR)

The mechanisms of the formation and evolution of the Milky Way are encoded in the orbits, chemistry and ages of its stars. With the 4MOST MIlky way Disk And BuLgE Low-Resolution Survey (4MIDABLE-LR) we aim to study kinematic and chemical substructures in the Milky Way disc and bulge region with samples of unprecedented size out to larger distances and greater precision than conceivable with Gaia alone or any other ongoing or planned survey. Gaia gives us the unique opportunity for target selection based almost entirely on parallax and magnitude range, hence increasing the efficiency in sampling larger Milky Way volumes with well-defined and effective selection functions. Our main goal is to provide a detailed chrono-chemo-kinematical extended map of our Galaxy and the largest Gaia follow-up down to $G = 19$ magnitudes (Vega). The complex nature of the disc components (for example, large target densities and highly structured extinction distribution in the Milky Way bulge and disc area), prompted us to develop a survey strategy with five main sub-surveys that are tailored to answer the still open questions about the assembly and evolution of our Galaxy, while taking full advantage of the Gaia data.
