A versatile anomaly detection method for medical images with a flow-based generative model in semi-supervision setting

Oversight in medical images is a crucial problem, and timely reporting of medical images is desired. Therefore, an all-purpose anomaly detection method that can detect virtually all types of lesions/diseases in a given image is strongly desired. However, few commercially available and versatile anomaly detection methods for medical images have been provided so far. Recently, anomaly detection methods built upon deep learning methods have been rapidly growing in popularity, and these methods seem to provide reasonable solutions to the problem. However, the workload to label the images necessary for training in deep learning remains heavy. In this study, we present an anomaly detection method based on two trained flow-based generative models. With this method, the posterior probability can be computed as a normality metric for any given image. The training of the generative models requires two sets of images: a set containing only normal images and another set containing both normal and abnormal images without any labels. In the latter set, each sample does not have to be labeled as normal or abnormal; therefore, any mixture of images (e.g., all cases in a hospital) can be used as the dataset without cumbersome manual labeling. The method was validated with two types of medical images: chest X-ray radiographs (CXRs) and brain computed tomographies (BCTs). The areas under the receiver operating characteristic curves for logarithm posterior probabilities of CXRs (0.868 for pneumonia-like opacities) and BCTs (0.904 for infarction) were comparable to those in previous studies with other anomaly detection methods. This result showed the versatility of our method.

Effect of Born and unitary impurity scattering on the Kramer-Pesch shrinkage of a vortex core in an s-wave superconductor

We theoretically investigate a non-magnetic impurity effect on the temperature dependence of the vortex core shrinkage (Kramer-Pesch effect) in a single-band s-wave superconductor. The Born limit and the unitary limit scattering are compared within the framework of the quasiclassical theory of superconductivity. We find that the impurity effect inside a vortex core in the unitary limit is weaker than in the Born one when a system is in the moderately clean regime, which results in a stronger core shrinkage in the unitary limit than in the Born one.

First-principles-based $\pm s$-wave modelling for iron-based superconductors:Studies for specific heat and nuclear magnetic relaxation rate

In order to consistently explain controversial experimental results on superconducting states observed by different probes in typical iron-based superconductors, we construct a realistic multi-band $\pm s$-wave pairing model by combining the quasiclassical formalism with the first-principles calculation. The model successfully resolves the controversies in contrast to the fact that simplified models such as two-band $\pm s$-wave one fail to do. A key in the model is the existence of relatively small gaps which leads to material-dependent peculiarities.

Direct Numerical Confirmation of Pinning Induced Sign Change in Superconducting Hall Effect in Type-II Superconductors

Using the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equation with the complex relaxation time and the Maxwell equation, we systematically examine transverse motion of vortex dynamics in the presence of pinning disorders. Consequently, in a plastic flow phase in which moving and pinned vortices coexist, we find that the Hall voltage generally changes its sign. The origin of the sign change is ascribed to a fact that moving vortices are strongly drifted by circular current of pinned vortices and the enforced transverse moving direction becomes opposite to that by transport current. This suggests that the Hall sign change is a behavior common in all disordered type-II superconductors.

Model for Vortex-core tunneling spectroscopy of chiral p-wave superconductors via odd-frequency pairing states

The local density of states (LDOS) around a vortex core is studied theoretically in terms of the odd-frequency (odd-omega) Cooper pairing induced around the center of the vortex core. We find a robust zero-energy peak in the LDOS at a vortex core in a chiral p-wave superconductor originating from an odd-omega s-wave pair amplitude. We suggest how to discriminate a spin-triplet pairing symmetry and spatial chiral-domain structure by scanning tunneling spectroscopy via odd-omega pair amplitudes inside vortex cores.

LDA + Negative U Solves a Puzzle of too Large Calculated Magnetic Moment in Iron-based Superconductor LaFeAsO_{1-x}F_x

A puzzle in the iron-based superconductor LaFeAsO_{1-x}F_x is that the magnetic moment obtained by first-principle electronic structure calculations is unexpectedly much larger than the experimentally observed one. For example, the calculated value is ~ 2.0 μ_B in the mother compound, while it is ~ 0.3 μ_B in experiments. We find that the puzzle is solved within the framework LDA + U by expanding the U value into a slightly negative range. We show U dependence of the obtained magnetic moment in both the undoped x=0.0 and doped x = 0.125. These results reveal that the magnetic moment is drastically reduced when entering to the slightly negative range of U. Moreover, the negative U well explains other measurement data, e.g., lattice constants and electronic DOS at the Fermi level. We discuss possible origins of the negative U in these compounds.

Josephson Effect between Conventional and Rashba Superconductors

We study the Josephson effect between a conventional s-wave superconductor and a non-centrosymmetric superconductor with Rashba spin-orbit coupling. Rashba spin-orbit coupling affects the Josephson pair tunneling in a characteristic way. The Josephson coupling can be decomposed into two parts, a `spin-singlet-like' and a `spin-triplet-like' component. The latter component can lead to shift of the Josephson phase by πrelative to the former coupling. This has important implications on interference effects and may explain some recent experimental results for the Al/CePt3Si junction.

Andreev bound states and tunneling characteristics of a non-centrosymmetric superconductor

The tunneling characteristics of planar junctions between a normal metal and a non-centrosymmetric superconductor like CePt3Si are examined. It is shown that the superconducting phase with mixed parity can give rise to characteristic zero-bias anomalies in certain junction directions. The origin of these zero-bias anomalies are Andreev bound states at the interface. The tunneling characteristics for different directions allow to test the structure of the parity-mixed pairing state.

S-wave/spin-triplet order in superconductors without inversion symmetry: Li$_2$Pd$_3$B and Li$_2$Pt$_3$B

We investigate the order parameter of noncentrosymmetric superconductors Li$_2$Pd$_3$B and Li$_2$Pt$_3$B via the behavior of the penetration depth $λ(T)$. The low-temperature penetration depth shows BCS-like behavior in Li$_2$Pd$_3$B, while in Li$_2$Pt$_3$B it follows a linear temperature dependence. We propose that broken inversion symmetry and the accompanying antisymmetric spin-orbit coupling, which admix spin-singlet and spin-triplet pairing, are responsible for this behavior. The triplet contribution is weak in Li$_2$Pd$_3$B, leading to a wholly open but anisotropic gap. The significantly larger spin-orbit coupling in Li$_2$Pt$_3$B allows the spin-triplet component to be larger in Li$_2$Pt$_3$B, producing line nodes in the energy gap as evidenced by the linear temperature dependence of $λ(T)$. The experimental data are in quantitative agreement with theory.

Spatially Resolved NMR Relaxation Rate in a Noncentrosymmetric Superconductor

We numerically study the spatially-resolved NMR around a single vortex in a noncentrosymmetric superconductor such as CePt3Si. The nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1 under the influence of the vortex core states is calculated for an s+p-wave Cooper pairing state. The result is compared with that for an s-wave pairing state.

Basic Properties of a Vortex in a Noncentrosymmetric Superconductor

We numerically study the vortex core structure in a noncentrosymmetric superconductor such as CePt3Si without mirror symmetry about the xy plane. A single vortex along the z axis and a mixed singlet-triplet Cooper pairing model are considered. The spatial profiles of the pair potential, local density of states, supercurrent density, and radially-textured magnetic moment density around the vortex are obtained in the clean limit on the basis of the quasiclassical theory of superconductivity.

Temperature Dependence of the Superfluid Density in a Noncentrosymmetric Superconductor

For a noncentrosymmetric superconductor such as CePt3Si, we consider a Cooper pairing model with a two-component order parameter composed of spin-singlet and spin-triplet pairing components. We calculate the superfluid density tensor in the clean limit on the basis of the quasiclassical theory of superconductivity. We demonstrate that such a pairing model accounts for an experimentally observed feature of the temperature dependence of the London penetration depth in CePt3Si, i.e., line-node-gap behavior at low temperatures.

Nuclear Magnetic Relaxation Rate in a Noncentrosymmetric Superconductor

For a noncentrosymmetric superconductor such as CePt3Si, we consider a Cooper pairing model with a two-component order parameter composed of spin-singlet and spin-triplet pairing components. We demonstrate that such a model on a qualitative level accounts for experimentally observed features of the temperature dependence of the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1, namely a peak just below Tc and a line-node gap behavior at low temperatures.

Impurity Effect on Kramer-Pesch Core Shrinkage in s-Wave Vortex and Chiral p-Wave Vortex

The low-temperature shrinking of the vortex core (Kramer-Pesch effect) is studied for an isolated single vortex for chiral p-wave and s-wave superconducting phases. The effect of nonmagnetic impurities on the vortex core radius is numerically investigated in the Born limit by means of a quasiclassical approach. It is shown that in the chiral p-wave phase the Kramer-Pesch effect displays a certain robustness against impurities owing to a specific quantum effect, while the s-wave phase reacts more sensitively to impurity scattering. This suggests chiral p-wave superconductors as promising candidates for the experimental observation of the Kramer-Pesch effect.

Critical Temperature Tc and Charging Energy Ec between B-B layers of Superconducting diboride materials MgB2 in 3D JJA model

The diboride materials MB2 (M = Mg, Be, Pb, etc.) are discussed on the basis of the 3D Josephson junction array (JJA) model due to Kawabata-Shenoy-Bishop, in terms of the B-B layers in the diborides analogous to the Cu-O ones in the cuprates. We propose a possibility of superconducting materials with the MgB2-type structure which exhibit higher critical temperature Tc over 39K of MgB2. We point out a role of interstitial ionic atoms (e.g., Mg in MgB2) as capacitors between the B-B layers, which reduce the charging coupling energy in JJA.

Polarized Parton Distribution Functions in the Nucleon

Polarized parton distribution functions are determined by using world data from the longitudinally polarized deep inelastic scattering experiments. A new parametrization of the parton distribution functions is adopted by taking into account the positivity and the counting rule. From the fit to the asymmetry data A_1, the polarized distribution functions of u and d valence quarks, sea quarks, and gluon are obtained. The results indicate that the quark spin content is ΔΣ=0.20 and 0.05 in the leading order (LO) and the next-to-leading-order (NLO) MS-bar scheme, respectively. However, if x dependence of the sea-quark distribution is fixed at small x by "perturbative QCD" and Regge theory, it becomes ΔΣ=0.24 ~ 0.28 in the NLO. The small-x behavior cannot be uniquely determined by the existing data, which indicates the importance of future experiments. From our analysis, we propose one set of LO distributions and two sets of NLO ones as the longitudinally-polarized parton distribution functions.

Many-body vortex effect on the transverse force acting on a moving vortex

The nondissipative transverse force acting on one moving vortex under the influence of another vortex is discussed in fermionic superfluid systems, where the relative velocity between the vortices is finite. On the basis of detailed numerical solutions of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation, the Berry phase for an adiabatic motion of the vortex line is examined for a two-vortex system. It is found that the detailed electronic structure of a vortex core can affect the transverse force, without abandoning the previous discussions of the robust Magnus force on a single vortex.

Relation between Vortex core charge and Vortex Bound States

Spatially inhomogeneous electron distribution around a single vortex is discussed on the basis of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes theory. The spatial structure and temperature dependence of the electron density around the vortex are presented. A relation between the vortex core charge and the vortex bound states (or the Caroli-de Gennes-Matricon states) is pointed out. Using the scanning tunneling microscope, information on the vortex core charge can be extracted through this relation.
