Resonance pressure of electromagnetic radiation on metal nanoparticle

The influence of the electromagnetic irradiation pressure on a spheroidal metallic nanoparticle at the frequencies close to the surface plasmon vibrations has been considered. With the action of the radiation pressure, the polarizability of metal nanoparticle becomes a tensor quantity. The expressions for the resonance pressure components for the cases of plane-polarized and circularly polarized light have been derived. We have demonstrated that the resonance pressure can substantially depend on the shape of a non-spherical nanoparticle and its orientation with respect to the direction of light propagation and the light polarization.

Influence of nanoparticle surface and shape on the dipole magnetic absorption of ultrashort laser pulses

The theory on the magnetic field energy absorption by metal nanoparticles of a nonspherical shape irradiated with ultrashort laser pulses of different duration is developed. The effect of both the particle surface and the particle shape on the absorbed energy is studied. For the particles having an oblate or prolate spheroidal shape, the dependence of this energy on the orientation of the magnetic field upon a particle, the degree of its deviation from a spherical shape, a pulse duration, and the carrier frequency of the laser ray are found. A significant increase in the absorption is established when an electron mean free path coincides with the size of the particle. The Drude and kinetic approaches are used and the results are compared with each other.

Estimation of electron temperature in heated metallic nanoparticle

A method is proposed for determining the temperature of hot electrons in a metallic nanoparticle embedded in a dielectric matrix under ultrashort laser pulses irradiation. The amplitude and power of the longitudinal spherical acoustic oscillations as functions of density and elastic properties of the medium, the laser pulse duration, the electron temperature, radii of particles, and the electron-phonon coupling constant are obtained. The efficiency of the electron energy transfer from heated noble nanoparticles to a surrounding environment is estimated for different electron temperatures.

Plasmon resonance sensitivity in fine metal particle

The sensitivity of the wavelength position of surface plasmon resonances in prolate and oblate fine metal particles to the refractive index of an embedding solution, a particle shape, and electron temperature is studied theoretically in the framework of different analytical methods. All calculations are illustrated on the single potassium nanoparticle as an example.

Temperature dependence of plasmon resonances in spheroidal metal nanoparticles

The effect of the electron temperature on both the light absorption and the scattering by metal nanoparticles (MNs) with excitation of the surface plasmon electron vibrations is studied in the framework of the kinetic theory. The formulae for electroconductivity and polarizability tensors are derived for finite temperatures of an electron gas. The electrical conductivity and the halfwidth of the surface plasmon resonance are studied in detail for a spherical MN. Depending on the size of MN, the efficiencies of light absorption and scattering with the temperature change are investigated. It is found, in particular, that the absorption efficiency can both increase and decrease with a temperature drop. The derived formulas make it possible to analytically calculate various optical and transport phenomena for MNs of any spheroidal shape embedded in any dielectric media.
