New Higgs mechanism from the lattice

Spontaneous symmetry breaking has been observed in lattice simulations of five-dimensional gauge theories on an orbifold. This effect is reproduced by perturbation theory if it is modified to account for a finite cut-off. We present a comparison of lattice and analytic results for bulk gauge group SU(2).

Higher-Spin Gauge Fields Interacting with Scalars: The Lagrangian Cubic Vertex

We apply a recently presented BRST procedure to construct the Largangian cubic vertex of higher-spin gauge field triplets interacting with massive free scalars. In flat space, the spin-s triplet propagates the series of irreducible spin-s, s-2,..,0/1 modes which couple independently to corresponding conserved currents constructed from the scalars. The simple covariantization of the flat space result is not enough in AdS, as new interaction vertices appear. We present in detail the cases of spin-2 and spin-3 triplets coupled to scalars. Restricting to a single irreducible spin-s mode we uncover previously obtained results. We also present an alternative derivation of the lower spin results based on the idea that higher-spin gauge fields arise from the gauging of higher derivative symmetries of free matter Lagrangians. Our results can be readily applied to holographic studies of higher-spin gauge theories.

Lattice Gauge Theory Approach to Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking from an Extra Dimension

We present lattice simulation results corresponding to an SU(2) pure gauge theory defined on the orbifold space E_4 x I_1, where E_4 is the four-dimensional Euclidean space and I_1 is an interval, with the gauge symmetry broken to a U(1) subgroup at the two ends of the interval by appropriate boundary conditions. We demonstrate that the U(1) gauge boson acquires a mass from a Higgs mechanism. The mechanism is driven by two of the extra-dimensional components of the five-dimensional gauge field which play respectively the role of the longitudinal component of the gauge boson and a massive real physical scalar, the Higgs particle. Despite the non-renormalizable nature of the theory, we observe only a mild cut-off dependence of the physical observables. We also show evidence that there is a region in the parameter space where the system behaves in a way consistent with dimensional reduction.

An Alternative for Moduli Stabilisation

The one-loop vacuum energy is explicitly computed for a class of perturbative string vacua where supersymmetry is spontaneously broken by a T-duality invariant asymmetric Scherk-Schwarz deformation. The low-lying spectrum is tachyon-free for any value of the compactification radii and thus no Hagedorn-like phase-transition takes place. Indeed, the induced effective potential is free of divergence, and has a global anti de Sitter minimum where geometric moduli are naturally stabilised.

Non-perturbative mass spectrum of an extra-dimensional orbifold

We analyse non-perturbatively a five-dimensional SU(2) gauge theory compactified on the S^1/Z_2 orbifold. In particular, we present simulation results for the mass spectrum of the theory, which contains a Higgs and a photon. The Higgs mass is found to be free of divergences without fine-tuning. The photon mass is non-zero, thus providing us with the first lattice evidence for a Higgs mechanism derived from an extra dimension. Data from the static potential are consistent with dimensional reduction at low energies.

Scherk-Schwarz Breaking and Intersecting Branes

We study the effect of Scherk-Schwarz deformations on intersecting branes. Non-chiral fermions in any representation of the Chan-Paton gauge group generically acquire a tree-level mass dependent on the compactification radius and the brane wrapping numbers. This offers an elegant solution to one of the long-standing problems in intersecting-brane-world models where the ubiquitous presence of massless non-chiral fermions is a clear embarrassment for any attempt to describe the Standard Model of Particle Physics.

A Class of Non-Supersymmetric Open String Vacua

We analyze non-supersymmetric four dimensional open string models of type IIB string theory compactified on $T^2\times K3$ with Scherk-Schwarz deformation acting on an $S^1$ of the $T^2$ torus. We find that there are always two solutions to the tadpole conditions that are shown to be connected via Wilson lines in an non-trivial way. These models although non-supersymmetric, are free of R-R and NS-NS tadpoles.

Radiative brane-mass terms in D>5 orbifold gauge theories

A gauge theory with gauge group G defined in D>4 space-time dimensions can be broken to a subgroup H on four dimensional fixed point branes, when compactified on an orbifold. Mass terms for extra dimensional components of gauge fields A_i (brane scalars) might acquire (when allowed by the brane symmetries) quadratically divergent radiative masses and thus jeopardize the stability of the four-dimensional theory. We have analyzed Z_2 compactifications and identified the brane symmetries remnants of the higher dimensional gauge invariance. No mass term is allowed for D=5 while for D>5 a tadpole ε^{ij}F_{ij}^αcan appear when there are U_α(1) factors in H. A detailed calculation is done for the D=6 case and it is established that the tadpole is related, although does not coincide, with the U_α(1) anomaly induced on the brane by the bulk fermions. In particular, no tadpole is generated from gauge bosons or fermions in real representations

TeV-Scale Z' Bosons from D-branes

Generic D-brane string models of particle physics predict the existence of extra U(1) gauge symmetries beyond hypercharge. These symmetries are not of the E_6 class but rather include the gauging of Baryon and Lepton numbers as well as certain Peccei-Quinn-like symmetries. Some of the U(1)'s have triangle anomalies, but they are cancelled by a Green-Schwarz mechanism. The corresponding gauge bosons typically acquire a mass of order the string scale M_S by combining with two-index antisymmetric fields coming from the closed string sector of the theory. We argue that in string models with a low string scale M_S proportional to 1-10 TeV, the presence of these generic U(1)'s may be amenable to experimental test. Present constraints from electroweak precision data already set important bounds on the mass of these extra gauge bosons. In particular, for large classes of models, rho-parameter constraints imply M_S >= 1.5 TeV. In the present scheme some fraction of the experimentally measured Z^0 mass would be due not to the Higgs mechanism, but rather to the mixing with these closed string fields. We give explicit formulae for recently constructed classes of intersecting D6- and D5-brane models yielding the Standard Model (SM) fermion spectrum.

Finite mass corrections in orbifold gauge theories

The Standard Model Higgs boson can be identified with the extra dimensional component of a gauge boson in a higher dimensional theory where the gauge group is broken to the Standard Model group by the orbifold action. In that case the Standard Model symmetry can be radiatively broken by the Hosotani mechanism and the Higgs boson mass is protected from bulk quadratic divergences by the higher dimensional gauge theory without any need of supersymmetry. However the latter does not protect a priori the Higgs mass from brane quadratic divergences. We show by an explicit calculation in the orbifold $S^1/Z_2$ that such effects are absent at one-loop. Moreover we identify the symmetry that protects such brane mass terms to all orders in perturbation theory and thus guarantees the absence of a corresponding mass counterterm

Bulk and brane radiative effects in gauge theories on orbifolds

We have computed one-loop bulk and brane mass renormalization effects in a five-dimensional gauge theory compactified on the M_4 \times S^1/Z_2 orbifold, where an arbitrary gauge group G is broken by the orbifold action to its subgroup H. The space-time components of the gauge boson zero modes along the H generators span the gauge theory on the orbifold fixed point branes while the zero modes of the higher-dimensional components of the gauge bosons along the G/H generators play the role of Higgs fields with respect to the gauge group H. No quadratic divergences in the mass renormalization of the gauge and Higgs fields are found either in the bulk or on the branes. All brane effects for the Higgs field masses vanish (only wave function renormalization effects survive) while bulk effects are finite and can trigger, depending on the fermionic content of the theory, spontaneous Hosotani breaking of the brane gauge group H. For the gauge fields we do find logarithmic divergences corresponding to mass renormalization of their heavy Kaluza-Klein modes. Two-loop brane effects for Higgs field masses are expected from wave function renormalization brane effects inserted into finite bulk mass corrections.

Brane Worlds, the Cosmological Constant and String Theory

We argue that traditional methods of compactification of string theory make it very difficult to understand how the cosmological constant becomes zero. String inspired models can give zero cosmological constant after fine tuning but since string theory has no free parameters it is not clear that this is allowed. Brane world scenarios on the other hand while they do not answer the question as to why the cosmological constant is zero do actually allow a choice of integration constants that permit flat four space solutions. In this paper we discuss gauged supergravity realizations of such a world. To the extent that this starting point can be considered a low energy effective action of string theory (and there is some recent evidence supporting this) our model may be considered a string theory realization of this scenario.

Gauge mediated supersymmetry breaking and supergravity

We analyze simple models of gauge mediated supersymmetry breaking in the context of supergravity. We distinguish two cases. One is when the messenger of the supersymmetry breaking is a non Abelian gauge force and the other is when the messenger is a pseudoanomalous U(1). We assume that these models originate from string theory and we impose the constraint of the vanishing of the cosmological constant requiring also the stabilization of the dilaton. In the first case, we do not find vacua that are consistent with the constraints of gauge mediation and have a zero tree level cosmological constant. In the second case, no such conflict arises. In addition, by looking at the one loop cosmological constant, we show that the dilaton F-term can not be neglected in either case. For the gauge mediated case our considerations suggest that the dilaton must be frozen out of the low energy field theory by non-perturbative string dynamics.

Anomalous U(1) and low-energy physics: the power of D-flatness and holomorphy

In models with an anomalous abelian symmetry broken at a very large scale, we study which requirements to impose on the anomalous charges in order to prevent standard model fields from acquiring large vacuum expectation values. The use of holomorphic invariants to study D-flat directions for the anomalous symmetry, proves to be a very powerful tool. We find that in order to forbid unphysical vacuum configurations at that scale, the superpotential must contain many interaction terms, including the usual Yukawa terms. Our analysis suggests that the anomalous charge of the μ-term is zero. It is remarkable that, together with the seesaw mechanism, and mass hierarchies, this implies a natural conservation of R-parity.
