Spin-orbit coupling in nuclei and realistic nucleon-nucleon potentials

We analyze the spin-orbit coupling term in the nuclear energy density functional in terms of a zero-range NN-contact interaction and finite-range contributions from two-pion exchange. We show that the strength of the spin-orbit contact interaction as extracted from high-precision nucleon-nucleon potentials is in perfect agreement with that of phenomenological Skyrme forces employed in non-relativistic nuclear structure calculations. Additional long-range contributions from chiral two-pion exchange turn out to be relatively small. These explicitly density-dependent contributions reduce the ratio of the isovector to the isoscalar spin-orbit strength significantly below the Skyrme value 1/3. We perform a similar analysis for the strength function of the $(\vec \nabla ρ)^2$-term and find values not far from those of phenomenological Skyrme parameterizations.

Relativistic nuclear model with point-couplings constrained by QCD and chiral symmetry

We derive a microscopic relativistic point-coupling model of nuclear many-body dynamics constrained by in-medium QCD sum rules and chiral symmetry. The effective Lagrangian is characterized by density dependent coupling strengths, determined by chiral one- and two-pion exchange and by QCD sum rule constraints for the large isoscalar nucleon self-energies that arise through changes of the quark condensate and the quark density at finite baryon density. This approach is tested in the analysis of the equations of state for symmetric and asymmetric nuclear matter, and of bulk and single-nucleon properties of finite nuclei. In comparison with purely phenomenological mean-field approaches, the built-in QCD constraints and the explicit treatment of pion exchange restrict the freedom in adjusting parameters and functional forms of density dependent couplings. It is shown that chiral (two-pion exchange) fluctuations play a prominent role for nuclear binding and saturation, whereas strong scalar and vector fields of about equal magnitude and opposite sign, induced by changes of the QCD vacuum in the presence of baryonic matter, generate the large effective spin-orbit potential in finite nuclei.

Nuclear energy density functional from chiral pion-nucleon dynamics: Isovector spin-orbit terms

We extend a recent calculation of the nuclear energy density functional in the systematic framework of chiral perturbation theory by computing the isovector spin-orbit terms: $(\vec \nabla ρ_p- \vec \nabla ρ_n)\cdot(\vec J_p-\vec J_n) G_{so}(k_f)+ (\vec J_p-\vec J_n)^2 G_J(k_f)$. The calculation includes the one-pion exchange Fock diagram and the iterated one-pion exchange Hartree and Fock diagrams. From these few leading order contributions in the small momentum expansion one obtains already a good equation of state of isospin-symmetric nuclear matter. We find that the parameterfree results for the (density-dependent) strength functions $G_{so}(k_f)$ and $G_J(k_f)$ agree fairly well with that of phenomenological Skyrme forces for densities $ρ> ρ_0/10$. At very low densities a strong variation of the strength functions $G_{so}(k_f)$ and $G_J(k_f)$ with density sets in. This has to do with chiral singularities $m_π^{-1}$ and the presence of two competing small mass scales $k_f$ and $m_π$. The novel density dependencies of $G_{so}(k_f)$ and $G_J(k_f)$ as predicted by our parameterfree (leading order) calculation should be examined in nuclear structure calculations.

Three-body spin-orbit forces from chiral two-pion exchange

Using chiral perturbation theory, we calculate the density-dependent spin-orbit coupling generated by the two-pion exchange three-nucleon interaction involving virtual $Δ$-isobar excitation. From the corresponding three-loop Hartree and Fock diagrams we obtain an isoscalar spin-orbit strength $F_{\rm so}(k_f)$ which amounts at nuclear matter saturation density to about half of the empirical value of $90 $MeVfm$^5$. The associated isovector spin-orbit strength $G_{\rm so}(k_f)$ comes out about a factor of 20 smaller. Interestingly, this three-body spin-orbit coupling is not a relativistic effect but independent of the nucleon mass $M$. Furthermore, we calculate the three-body spin-orbit coupling generated by two-pion exchange on the basis of the most general chiral $ππNN$-contact interaction. We find similar (numerical) results for the isoscalar and isovector spin-orbit strengths $F_{\rm so}(k_f)$ and $G_{\rm so}(k_f)$ with a strong dominance of the p-wave part of the $ππNN$-contact interaction and the Hartree contribution.

Iterated and irreducible pion-photon exchange in nuclei

We calculate the contribution to the nuclear energy density functional which arises from iterated pion-photon exchange between nucleons. In heavy nuclei, this novel charge symmetry breaking interaction leads to an additional binding of each proton by about 0.2 MeV. Compared to that the analogous effect from irreducible pion-photon exchange is negligibly small. As a possible mechanism to resolve the Nolen-Schiffer anomaly we propose the iteration of one-photon exchange with an attractive short-range NN-interaction. The corresponding energy per proton reads: $\bar E[ρ_p]=(2α/15π^2)(π^2 -3+6 \ln2) {\cal A}_{pp} k_p^2$ with $ρ_p =k_p^3/ 3π^2$ the proton density and ${\cal A}_{pp}\approx 2 $fm an effective (in-medium) scattering length. Hints for such a value of ${\cal A}_{pp}$ come from phenomenological Skyrme forces and from the neutron matter equation of state.

Chiral approach to nuclear matter: Role of explicit short-range NN-terms

We extend a recent chiral approach to nuclear matter by including the most general (momentum-independent) NN-contact interaction. Iterating this two-parameter contact-vertex with itself and with one-pion exchange the emerging energy per particle exhausts all terms possible up-to-and-including fourth order in the small momentum expansion. The equation of state of pure neutron matter, $\bar E_n(k_n)$, can be reproduced very well up to quite high neutron densities of $ρ_n=0.5\fmd$ by adjusting the strength of a repulsive $nn$-contact interaction. Binding and saturation of isospin-symmetric nuclear matter is a generic feature of our perturbative calculation. Fixing the maximum binding energy per particle to $-\bar E(k_{f0})= 15.3 $MeV we find that any possible equilibrium density $ρ_0$ lies below $ρ_0^{\rm max}=0.191\fmd$. The additional constraint from the neutron matter equation of state leads however to a somewhat too low saturation density of $ρ_0 =0.134 \fmd$. We also investigate the effects of the NN-contact interaction on the complex single-particle potential $U(p,k_f)+i W(p,k_f)$. We find that the effective nucleon mass at the Fermi-surface is bounded from below by $M^*(k_{f0}) \geq 1.4 M$. This property keeps the critical temperature of the liquid-gas phase transition at somewhat too high values $T_c \geq 21 $MeV. The downward bending of the asymmetry energy $A(k_f)$ above nuclear matter saturation density is a generic feature of the approximation to fourth order. Altogether, there is within this complete fourth-order calculation no "magic" set of adjustable short-range parameters with which one could reproduce simultaneously and accurately all semi-empirical properties of nuclear matter.

23 High Redshift Supernovae from the IfA Deep Survey: Doubling the SN Sample at z>0.7

We present photometric and spectroscopic observations of 23 high redshift supernovae spanning a range of z=0.34-1.03, 9 of which are unambiguously classified as Type Ia. These supernovae were discovered during the IfA Deep Survey, which began in September 2001 and observed a total of 2.5 square degrees to a depth of approximately m=25-26 in RIZ over 9-17 visits, typically every 1-3 weeks for nearly 5 months, with additional observations continuing until April 2002. We give a brief description of the survey motivations, observational strategy, and reduction process. This sample of 23 high-redshift supernovae includes 15 at z>0.7, doubling the published number of objects at these redshifts, and indicates that the evidence for acceleration of the universe is not due to a systematic effect proportional to redshift. In combination with the recent compilation of Tonry et al. (2003), we calculate cosmological parameter density contours which are consistent with the flat universe indicated by the CMB (Spergel et al. 2003). Adopting the constraint that Omega_total = 1.0, we obtain best-fit values of (Omega_m, Omega_Lambda)=(0.33, 0.67) using 22 SNe from this survey augmented by the literature compilation. We show that using the empty-beam model for gravitational lensing does not eliminate the need for Omega_Lambda > 0. Experience from this survey indicates great potential for similar large-scale surveys while also revealing the limitations of performing surveys for z>1 SNe from the ground.

Weak Lensing by High-Redshift Clusters of Galaxies II: Mean Redshift of the Faint Background Galaxy Population

We use weak lensing shear measurements of six z>0.5 clusters of galaxies to derive the mean lensing redshift of the background galaxies used to measure the shear. Five of these clusters are compared to X-ray mass models and verify a mean lensing redshift for a 23<R<26.3, R-I<0.9 background galaxy population in good agreement with photometric redshift surveys of the HDF-S. The lensing strength of the six clusters is also analyzed as a function of the magnitude of the background galaxies, and an increase in shear with increasing magnitude is detected at moderate significance. The change in the strength of the shear is presumed to be caused by an increase in the mean redshift of the background galaxies with increasing magnitude, and the degree of change detected is also in agreement with those in photometric redshift surveys of the HDF-S.

Weak Gravitational Lensing by a Sample of X-ray Luminous Clusters of Galaxies -- III. Serendipitous Weak Lensing Detections of Dark and Luminous Mass Concentrations

In the course of a weak gravitational lensing survey of 39 clusters of galaxies, covering a total sky area of ~1 square degree, we have serendipitously discovered mass concentrations in the fields of A1705 and A1722 which are most probably not associated with the main cluster target. By combining weak lensing information with two-color galaxy photometry in fields centered on our sample clusters, we identify a new cluster candidate at z~0.5 in the field of A1705. This cluster candidate also displays strong lensing in the form of a giant luminous arc. The new mass concentration in the field of A1722 also seems to be associated with an optically luminous cluster of galaxies at z~0.5, but in this case there is some evidence for additional structures along the line of sight that may contribute to the lensing signal. A third cluster, A959, has a dark sub-clump which shows interesting morphological evidence in the mass map for being associated with the main cluster. This is the first case where there is any significant evidence for a physical association between a dark sub-clump (discovered from weak lensing) and a normal cluster. Analysis of archival X-ray data shows that the three new mass concentrations are not firmly detected in X-rays and that they are X-ray underluminous.

Nuclear Many-Body Dynamics constrained by QCD and Chiral Symmetry

We present a novel description of nuclear many-body systems, both for nuclear matter and finite nuclei, emphasizing the connection with the condensate structure of the QCD ground state and spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking. Lorentz scalar and vector mean-fields are introduced in accordance with QCD sum rules. Nuclear binding arises from pionic fluctuations, using in-medium chiral perturbation theory up to three-loop order. Ground state properties of $^{16}$O and $^{40}$Ca are calculated. The built-in QCD constraints reduce the number of input parameters significantly in comparison with purely phenomenological relativistic mean-field approaches.

Spectral functions of isoscalar scalar and isovector electromagnetic form factors of the nucleon at two-loop order

We calculate the imaginary parts of the isoscalar scalar and isovector electromagnetic form factors of the nucleon up to two-loop order in chiral perturbation theory. Particular attention is paid on the correct behavior of Im $σ_N(t)$ and Im $G_{E,M}^V(t)$ at the two-pion threshold $t_0=4 m_π^2$ in connection with the non-relativistic 1/M-expansion. We recover the well-known strong enhancement near threshold originating from the nearby anomalous singularity at $t_c = 4m_π^2-m_π^4/M^2 = 3.98 m_π^2$. In the case of the scalar spectral function Im $σ_N(t)$ one finds a significant improvement in comparison to the lowest order one-loop result. Higher order $ππ$-rescattering effects are however still necessary to close a remaining 20%-gap to the empirical scalar spectral function. The isovector electric and magnetic spectral functions Im $G_{E,M}^V(t)$ get additionally enhanced near threshold by the two-pion-loop contributions. After supplementing their two-loop results by a phenomenological $ρ$-meson exchange term one can reproduce the empirical isovector electric and magnetic spectral functions fairly well.

Induced pseudoscalar form factor of the nucleon at two-loop order in chiral perturbation theory

We calculate the imaginary part of the induced pseudoscalar form factor of the nucleon $G_P(t)$ in the framework of two-loop heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory. The effect of the calculated three-pion continuum on the pseudoscalar constant $g_P = (m_μ/2M) G_P(t=-0.877m_μ^2)$ measurable in ordinary muon capture $μ^-p\to ν_μn$ turns out to be negligibly small. Possible contributions from counterterms at two-loop order are numerically smaller than the uncertainty of the dominant pion-pole term proportional to the pion-nucleon coupling constant $g_{πN}= 13.2\pm 0.2$. We conclude that a sufficiently accurate representation of the induced pseudoscalar form factor of the nucleon at low momentum transfers $t$ is given by the sum of the pion-pole term and the Adler-Dothan-Wolfenstein term: $G_P(t) = 4g_{πN} M f_π/ (m_π^2 -t)- 2g_A M^2 < r_A^2 >/3$, with $ = (0.44 \pm 0.02)$ fm$^2$ the axial mean square radius of the nucleon.

Isovector nuclear spin-orbit interaction from chiral pion-nucleon dynamics

Using the two-loop approximation of chiral perturbation theory, we calculate the momentum and density dependent isovector nuclear spin-orbit strength $V_{ls}(p,k_f)$. This quantity is derived from the spin-dependent part of the interaction energy $Σ_{spin} = {i\over 2} \vec σ\cdot (\vec q \times\vec p)[U_{ls}(p,k_f)- V_{ls}(p,k_f)τ_3 δ] $ of a nucleon scattering off weakly inhomogeneous isospin-asymmetric nuclear matter. We find that iterated $1π$-exchange generates at saturation density, $k_{f0}=272.7 $MeV, an isovector nuclear spin-orbit strength at $p=0$ of $V_{ls}(0,k_{f0}) \simeq 50$ MeVfm$^2$. This value is about 1.4 times the analogous isoscalar nuclear spin-orbit strength $U_{ls}(0,k_{f0})\simeq 35$ MeVfm$^2$ generated by the same two-pion exchange diagrams. We also calculate several relativistic 1/M-corrections to the isoscalar nuclear spin-orbit strength. In particular, we evaluate the contributions from irreducible two-pion exchange to $U_{ls}(p,k_f)$. The effects of the three-body diagrams constructed from the Weinberg-Tomozawa $ππNN$-contact vertex on the isoscalar nuclear spin-orbit strength are computed. We find that such relativistic 1/M-corrections are less than 20% of the isoscalar nuclear spin-orbit strength generated by iterated one-pion-exchange, in accordance with the expectation from chiral power counting.

Nuclear energy density functional from chiral pion-nucleon dynamics

We calculate the nuclear energy density functional relevant for N=Z even-even nuclei in the systematic framework of chiral perturbation theory. The calculation includes the one-pion exchange Fock diagram and the iterated one-pion exchange Hartree and Fock diagrams. From these few leading order contributions in the small momentum expansion one obtains already a very good equation of state of isospin symmetric nuclear matter. We find that in the region below nuclear matter saturation density the effective nucleon mass $\widetilde M^*(ρ)$ deviates by at most 15% from its free space value $M$, with $0.89M<\widetilde M^*(ρ) M$ for higher densities. The parameterfree strength of the $(\vec\nabla ρ)^2$-term, $F_\nabla(k_f)$, is at saturation density comparable to that of phenomenological Skyrme forces. The magnitude of $F_J(k_f)$ accompanying the squared spin-orbit density $\vec J ^2$ comes out somewhat larger. The strength of the nuclear spin-orbit interaction, $F_{so}(k_f)$, as given by iterated one-pion exchange is about half as large as the corresponding empirical value, however, with the wrong negative sign. The novel density dependencies of $\widetilde M^*(ρ)$ and $F_{\nabla,so,J}(k_f)$ as predicted by our parameterfree calculation should be examined in nuclear structure calculations (after introducing an additional short range spin-orbit contribution constant in density).

Chiral dynamics and pionic 1s states of Pb and Sn isotopes

We calculate shifts and width of 1s and 2p states of pions bound to heavy nuclei, using an optical potential with its s-wave interaction part based on chiral symmetry. This potential is constructed systematically in two-loop approximation of chiral perturbation theory. A proper treatment of the explicit energy dependence of this potential in conjunction with gauge invariance turns out to be very important. Results are reported for deeply bound pionic states in Pb and Sn isotopes in comparison with the GSI data

The Galactic Exoplanet Survey Telescope (GEST)

The Galactic Exoplanet Survey Telescope (GEST) will observe a 2 square degree field in the Galactic bulge to search for extra-solar planets using a gravitational lensing technique. This gravitational lensing technique is the only method employing currently available technology that can detect Earth-mass planets at high signal-to-noise, and can measure the frequency of terrestrial planets as a function of Galactic position. GEST's sensitivity extends down to the mass of Mars, and it can detect hundreds of terrestrial planets with semi-major axes ranging from 0.7 AU to infinity. GEST will be the first truly comprehensive survey of the Galaxy for planets like those in our own Solar System.

Science Objectives and Early Results of the DEEP2 Redshift Survey

The DEIMOS spectrograph has now been installed on the Keck-II telescope and commissioning is nearly complete. The DEEP2 Redshift Survey, which will take approximately 120 nights at the Keck Observatory over a three year period and has been designed to utilize the power of DEIMOS, began in the summer of 2002. The multiplexing power and high efficiency of DEIMOS enables us to target 1000 faint galaxies per clear night. Our goal is to gather high-quality spectra of \~60,000 galaxies with z>0.75 in order to study the properties and large scale clustering of galaxies at z ~ 1. The survey will be executed at high spectral resolution, $R=λ/Δλ\approx 5000$, allowing us to work between the bright OH sky emission lines and to infer linewidths for many of the target galaxies (for several thousand objects, we will obtain rotation curves as well). The linewidth data will facilitate the execution of the classical redshift-volume cosmological test, which can provide a precision measurement of the equation of state of the Universe. This talk reviews the project, summarizes our science goals and presents some early DEIMOS data.

Complete next-to-leading order calculation for pion production in nucleon-nucleon collisions at threshold

Based on a counting scheme that explicitly takes into account the large momentum sqrt(M m_pi) characteristic for pion production in nucleon-nucleon collisions we calculate all diagrams for the reaction NN --> NN pi at threshold up to next-to-leading order. At this order there are no free parameters and the size of the next-to-leading order contributions is in line with the expectation from power counting. The sum of loop corrections at that order vanishes for the process pp --> pp pi^0 at threshold. The total contribution at next-to-leading order from loop diagrams that include the delta degree of freedom vanishes at threshold in both reaction channels pp --> pp pi^0, pn pi^+.
