Quasiparticle interaction in nuclear matter with chiral three-nucleon forces

We derive the effective interaction between two quasiparticles in symmetric nuclear matter resulting from the leading-order chiral three-nucleon force. We restrict our study to the L=0,1 Landau parameters of the central quasiparticle interaction computed to first order. We find that the three-nucleon force provides substantial repulsion in the isotropic spin- and isospin-independent component F_0 of the interaction. This repulsion acts to stabilize nuclear matter against isoscalar density oscillations, a feature which is absent in calculations employing low-momentum two-nucleon interactions only. We find a rather large uncertainty for the nuclear compression modulus due to a sensitive dependence on the low-energy constant c_3. The effective nucleon mass on the Fermi surface, as well as the nuclear symmetry energy, receive only small corrections from the leading-order chiral three-body force. Both the anomalous orbital g-factor and the Landau-Migdal parameter g'_{NN} (characterizing the spin-isospin response of nuclear matter) decrease with the addition of three-nucleon correlations. In fact, the anomalous orbital g-factor remains significantly smaller than its value extracted from experimental data, whereas g'_{NN} still compares well with empirical values. The inclusion of the three-nucleon force results in relatively small p-wave (L=1) components of the central quasiparticle interaction, thus suggesting an effective interaction of short range.

First Results from Pan-STARRS1: Faint, High Proper Motion White Dwarfs in the Medium-Deep Fields

The Pan-STARRS1 survey has obtained multi-epoch imaging in five bands (Pan-STARRS1 gps, rps, ips, zps, and yps) on twelve "Medium Deep Fields", each of which spans a 3.3 degree circle. For the period between Apr 2009 and Apr 2011 these fields were observed 50-200 times. Using a reduced proper motion diagram, we have extracted a list of 47 white dwarf (WD) candidates whose Pan-STARRS1 astrometry indicates a non-zero proper motion at the 6-sigma level, with a typical 1-sigma proper motion uncertainty of 10 mas/yr. We also used astrometry from SDSS (when available) and USNO-B to assess our proper motion fits. None of the WD candidates exhibits evidence of statistically significant parallaxes, with a typical 1-sigma uncertainty of 8 mas. Twelve of these candidates are known WDs, including the high proper motion (1.7"/yr) WD LHS 291. We confirm three more objects as WDs through optical spectroscopy. Based on the Pan-STARRS1 colors, ten of the stars are likely to be cool WDs with 4170 K Teff 5000 K and cooling ages <9 Gyr. We classify these objects as likely thick disk WDs based on their kinematics. Our current sample represents only a small fraction of the Pan-STARRS1 data. With continued coverage from the Medium Deep Field Survey and the 3pi survey, Pan-STARRS1 should find many more high proper motion WDs that are part of the old thick disk and halo.

Pan-STARRS1 Discovery of Two Ultra-Luminous Supernovae at z ~ 0.9

We present the discovery of two ultra-luminous supernovae (SNe) at z ~ 0.9 with the Pan-STARRS1 Medium-Deep Survey. These SNe, PS1-10ky and PS1-10awh, are amongst the most luminous SNe ever discovered, comparable to the unusual transients SN 2005ap and SCP 06F6. Like SN 2005ap and SCP 06F6, they show characteristic high luminosities (M_bol ~ -22.5 mag), blue spectra with a few broad absorption lines, and no evidence for H or He. We have constructed a full multi-color light curve sensitive to the peak of the spectral energy distribution in the rest-frame ultraviolet, and we have obtained time-series spectroscopy for these SNe. Given the similarities between the SNe, we combine their light curves to estimate a total radiated energy over the course of explosion of (0.9-1.4) x 10^51 erg. We find photospheric velocities of 12,000-19,000 km/s with no evidence for deceleration measured across ~3 rest-frame weeks around light-curve peak, consistent with the expansion of an optically-thick massive shell of material. We show that, consistent with findings for other ultra-luminous SNe in this class, radioactive decay is not sufficient to power PS1-10ky, and we discuss two plausible origins for these events: the initial spin-down of a newborn magnetar in a core-collapse SN, or SN shock breakout from the dense circumstellar wind surrounding a Wolf-Rayet star.

A Search for High Proper Motion T Dwarfs with Pan-STARRS1 + 2MASS + WISE

We have searched ~8200 sq. degs for high proper motion (~0.5-2.7"/year) T dwarfs by combining first-epoch data from the Pan-STARRS1 (PS1) 3-Pi Survey, the 2MASS All-Sky Point Source Catalog, and the WISE Preliminary Data Release. We identified two high proper motion objects with the very red (W1-W2) colors characteristic of T dwarfs, one being the known T7.5 dwarf GJ 570D. Near-IR spectroscopy of the other object (PSO J043.5+02 = WISEP J0254+0223) reveals a spectral type of T8, leading to a photometric distance of 7.2+/-0.7 pc. The 2.56"/yr proper motion of PSO J043.5+02 is the second highest among field T dwarfs, corresponding to an tangential velocity of 87+/-8 km/s. According to the Besancon galaxy model, this velocity indicates its galactic membership is probably in the thin disk, with the thick disk an unlikely possibility. Such membership is in accord with the near-IR spectrum, which points to a surface gravity (age) and metallicity typical of the field population. We combine 2MASS, SDSS, WISE, and PS1 astrometry to derive a preliminary parallax of 171+/-45 mas (5.8{+2.0}{-1.2} pc), the first such measurement using PS1 data. The proximity and brightness of PSO J043+02 will facilitate future characterization of its atmosphere, variability, multiplicity, distance, and kinematics. The modest number of candidates from our search suggests that the immediate (~10 pc) solar neighborhood does not contain a large reservoir of undiscovered T dwarfs earlier than about T8.

Nuclear energy density functional from chiral two- and three-nucleon interactions

An improved density-matrix expansion is used to calculate the nuclear energy density functional from chiral two- and three-nucleon interactions. The two-body interaction comprises long-range one- and two-pion exchange contributions and a set of contact terms contributing up to fourth power in momenta. In addition we employ the leading order chiral three-nucleon interaction with its parameters $c_E, c_D$ and $c_{1,3,4}$ fixed in calculations of nuclear few-body systems. With this input the nuclear energy density functional is derived to first order in the two- and three-nucleon interaction. We find that the strength functions $F_\nabla(ρ)$ and $F_{so}(ρ)$ of the surface and spin-orbit terms compare in the relevant density range reasonably with results of phenomenological Skyrme forces. However, an improved description requires (at least) the treatment of the two-body interaction to second order. This observation is in line with the deficiencies in the nuclear matter equation of state $\bar E(ρ)$ that remain in the Hartree-Fock approximation with low-momentum two- and three-nucleon interactions.

Four new T dwarfs identified in PanSTARRS 1 commissioning data

A complete well-defined sample of ultracool dwarfs is one of the key science programs of the Pan-STARRS 1 optical survey telescope (PS1). Here we combine PS1 commissioning data with 2MASS to conduct a proper motion search (0.1--2.0\arcsec/yr) for nearby T dwarfs, using optical+near-IR colors to select objects for spectroscopic followup. The addition of sensitive far-red optical imaging from PS1 enables discovery of nearby ultracool dwarfs that cannot be identified from 2MASS data alone. We have searched 3700 sq. deg. of PS1 y-band (0.95--1.03 um) data to y$\approx$19.5 mag (AB) and J$\approx$16.5 mag (Vega) and discovered four previously unknown bright T dwarfs. Three of the objects (with spectral types T1.5, T2 and T3.5) have photometric distances within 25 pc and were missed by previous 2MASS searches due to more restrictive color selection criteria. The fourth object (spectral type T4.5) is more distant than 25 pc and is only a single-band detection in 2MASS. We also examine the potential for completing the census of nearby ultracool objects with the PS1 3$π$ survey.

Second-order quasiparticle interaction in nuclear matter with chiral two-nucleon interactions

We employ Landau's theory of normal Fermi liquids to study the quasiparticle interaction in nuclear matter in the vicinity of saturation density. Realistic low-momentum nucleon-nucleon interactions evolved from the Idaho N3LO chiral two-body potential are used as input potentials. We derive for the first time exact results for the central part of the quasiparticle interaction computed to second order in perturbation theory, from which we extract the L=0 and L=1 Landau parameters as well as some relevant bulk equilibrium properties of nuclear matter. The accuracy of the intricate numerical calculations is tested with analytical results derived for scalar-isoscalar boson exchange and (modified) pion exchange at second order. The explicit dependence of the Fermi liquid parameters on the low-momentum cutoff scale is studied, which provides important insight into the scale variation of phase-shift equivalent two-body potentials. This leads naturally to explore the role that three-nucleon forces must play in the effective interaction between two quasiparticles.

Thermodynamics of the in-medium chiral condensate

The temperature dependence of the chiral condensate in isospin-symmetric nuclear matter at varying baryon densities is investigated starting from a realistic free energy density of the correlated nuclear many-body system. The framework is thermal in-medium chiral effective field theory which permits a systematic calculation of the quark mass dependence of the free energy density. One- and two-pion exchange processes, virtual $Δ(1232)$-isobar excitations and Pauli blocking corrections are treated up to and including three-loop order. It is found that nuclear matter remains in the Nambu-Goldstone phase with spontaneously broken chiral symmetry at least in the range of temperatures $T\lesssim 100\,$MeV and baryon densities up to about twice the density of normal nuclear matter.

Resummation of fermionic in-medium ladder diagrams to all orders

A system of fermions with a short-range interaction proportional to the scattering length $a$ is studied at finite density. At any order $a^n$, we evaluate the complete contributions to the energy per particle $\bar E(k_f)$ arising from combined (multiple) particle-particle and hole-hole rescatterings in the medium. This novel result is achieved by simply decomposing the particle-hole propagator into the vacuum propagator plus a medium-insertion and correcting for certain symmetry factors in the $(n-1)$-th power of the in-medium loop. Known results for the low-density expansion up to and including order $a^4$ are accurately reproduced. The emerging series in $a k_f$ can be summed to all orders in the form of a double-integral over an arctangent function. In that representation the unitary limit $a\to \infty$ can be taken and one obtains the value $ξ= 0.5067$ for the universal Bertsch parameter. We discuss also applications to the equation of state of neutron matter at low densities and mention further extensions of the resummation method.

Density-dependent nuclear interactions and the beta decay of 14C: chiral three-nucleon forces and Brown-Rho scaling

We study the role of density-dependent low-momentum nucleon-nucleon interactions in describing the anomalously long beta decay lifetime of 14C. We approach this problem both from the perspective of chiral effective field theory, in which genuine three-body forces generate an effective density-dependent two-body interaction, as well as from the perspective of Brown-Rho scaling, in which the masses and form factor cutoffs in one-boson-exchange interactions are modified in a dense nuclear medium due to the partial restoration of chiral symmetry. The beta decay transition of 14C to the ground state of 14N is calculated within the shell model using a model space consisting of two 0p-shell holes within a closed 16O core. The effective 0p-shell interaction is calculated up to second order in perturbation theory with single-particle energies extracted from experiment. We find that both three-nucleon forces and Brown-Rho scaling medium modifications give qualitatively similar results not only for the ground state to ground state Gamow-Teller transition but also for Gamow-Teller transitions from excited states of 14C to the ground state of 14N. In this way, it is observed that at a low-momentum scale of V_(low-k) = 2.1 fm-1, medium-modifications of the nuclear force play an essential role in increasing the lifetime of 14C from a few minutes to an archaeologically long one of 5730 years.

Ultra-bright optical transients are linked with type Ic supernovae

Recent searches by unbiased, wide-field surveys have uncovered a group of extremely luminous optical transients. The initial discoveries of SN 2005ap by the Texas Supernova Search and SCP-06F6 in a deep Hubble pencil beam survey were followed by the Palomar Transient Factory confirmation of host redshifts for other similar transients. The transients share the common properties of high optical luminosities (peak magnitudes ~ -21 to -23), blue colors, and a lack of H or He spectral features. The physical mechanism that produces the luminosity is uncertain, with suggestions ranging from jet-driven explosion to pulsational pair-instability. Here we report the most detailed photometric and spectral coverage of an ultra-bright transient (SN 2010gx) detected in the Pan-STARRS 1 sky survey. In common with other transients in this family, early-time spectra show a blue continuum, and prominent broad absorption lines of O II. However, about 25d after discovery, the spectra developed type Ic supernova features, showing the characteristic broad Fe II and Si II absorption lines. Detailed, post-maximum follow-up may show that all SN 2005ap and SCP-06F6 type transients are linked to supernovae Ic. This poses problems in understanding the physics of the explosions: there is no indication from late-time photometry that the luminosity is powered by 56Ni, the broad lightcurves suggest very large ejected masses, and the slow spectral evolution is quite different from typical Ic timescales. The nature of the progenitor stars and the origin of the luminosity are intriguing and open questions.

Displaying the Heterogeneity of the SN 2002cx-like Subclass of Type Ia Supernovae with Observations of the Pan-STARRS-1 Discovered SN2009ku

SN2009ku, discovered by Pan-STARRS-1, is a Type Ia supernova (SNIa), and a member of the distinct SN2002cx-like class of SNeIa. Its light curves are similar to the prototypical SN2002cx, but are slightly broader and have a later rise to maximum in g. SN2009ku is brighter (~0.6 mag) than other SN2002cx-like objects, peaking at M_V = -18.4 mag - which is still significantly fainter than typical SNeIa. SN2009ku, which had an ejecta velocity of ~2000 kms^-1 at 18 days after maximum brightness is spectroscopically most similar to SN2008ha, which also had extremely low-velocity ejecta. However, SN2008ha had an exceedingly low luminosity, peaking at M_V = -14.2 mag, ~4 mag fainter than SN2009ku. The contrast of high luminosity and low ejecta velocity for SN2009ku is contrary to an emerging trend seen for the SN2002cx class. SN2009ku is a counter-example of a previously held belief that the class was more homogeneous than typical SNeIa, indicating that the class has a diverse progenitor population and/or complicated explosion physics. As the first example of a member of this class of objects from the new generation of transient surveys, SN2009ku is an indication of the potential for these surveys to find rare and interesting objects.

GALEX and Pan-STARRS1 Discovery of SN IIP 2010aq: The First Few Days After Shock Breakout in a Red Supergiant Star

We present the early UV and optical light curve of Type IIP supernova (SN) 2010aq at z=0.0862, and compare it to analytical models for thermal emission following SN shock breakout in a red supergiant star. SN 2010aq was discovered in joint monitoring between the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) Time Domain Survey (TDS) in the NUV and the Pan-STARRS1 Medium Deep Survey (PS1 MDS) in the g, r, i, and z bands. The GALEX and Pan-STARRS1 observations detect the SN less than 1 day after shock breakout, measure a diluted blackbody temperature of 31,000 +/- 6,000 K 1 day later, and follow the rise in the UV/optical light curve over the next 2 days caused by the expansion and cooling of the SN ejecta. The high signal-to-noise ratio of the simultaneous UV and optical photometry allows us to fit for a progenitor star radius of 700 +/- 200 R_sun, the size of a red supergiant star. An excess in UV emission two weeks after shock breakout compared to SNe well fitted by model atmosphere-code synthetic spectra with solar metallicity, is best explained by suppressed line blanketing due to a lower metallicity progenitor star in SN 2010aq. Continued monitoring of PS1 MDS fields by the GALEX TDS will increase the sample of early UV detections of Type II SNe by an order of magnitude, and probe the diversity of SN progenitor star properties.

Radiative corrections to neutral pion-pair production

We calculate the one-photon loop radiative corrections to the neutral pion-pair photoproduction process $π^-γ\to π^-π^0π^0$. At leading order this reaction is governed by the chiral pion-pion interaction. Since the chiral $π^+π^-\toπ^0π^0$ contact-vertex depends only on the final-state invariant-mass it factors out of all photon-loop diagrams. We give analytical expressions for the multiplicative correction factor $R\sim α/2π$ arising from eight classes of contributing one-photon loop diagrams. An electromagnetic counterterm has to be included in order to cancel the ultraviolet divergences generated by the photon-loops. Infrared finiteness of the virtual radiative corrections is achieved (in the standard way) by including soft photon radiation below an energy cut-off $λ$. The radiative corrections to the total cross section vary between $+2\%$ and $-2\%$ for center-of-mass energies from threshold up to $7m_π$. The finite part of the electromagnetic counterterm gives an additional constant contribution of about $1\%$, however with a large uncertainty.

Low-energy interactions of Nambu-Goldstone bosons with $D$ mesons in covariant chiral perturbation theory

We calculate the scattering lengths of Nambu-Goldstone bosons interacting with $D$ mesons in a covariant formulation of chiral perturbation theory, which satisfies heavy-quark spin symmetry and analytical properties of loop amplitudes. We compare our results with previous studies performed using heavy meson chiral perturbation theory and show that recoil corrections are sizable in most cases.

Chiral corrections to $π^-γ\to 3π$ processes at low energies

We calculate in chiral perturbation theory the double-pion photoproduction processes $π^-γ\to π^- π^0π^0$ and $π^-γ\to π^+π^-π^-$ at low energies. At leading order these reactions are governed by the chiral pion-pion interaction. The next-to-leading order corrections arise from pion-loop diagrams and chiral-invariant counterterms involving the low-energy constants $\bar\ell_1,\, \bar\ell_2,\, \bar\ell_3$ and $\bar\ell_4$. The pertinent production amplitudes $A_1$ and $A_2$ depending on five kinematical variables are given in closed analytical form. We find that the total cross section for neutral pion-pair production $π^-γ\toπ^-π^0π^0$ gets enhanced in the region $\sqrt{s}< 7m_π$ by a factor $1.5 - 1.8$ by the next-to-leading order corrections. In contrast to this behavior the total cross section for charged pion-pair production $π^-γ\to π^+ π^-π^-$ remains almost unchanged in the region $\sqrt{s}< 6m_π$ in comparison to its tree-level result. Although the dynamics of the pion-pair production reactions is much richer, this observed pattern can be understood from the different influence of the chiral corrections on the pion-pion final state interaction ($π^+π^- \to π^0π^0$ versus $π^-π^- \to π^-π^-$). We present also results for the complete set of two-pion invariant mass spectra. The predictions of chiral perturbation theory for the $π^-γ\to 3π$ processes can be tested by the COMPASS experiment which uses Primakoff scattering of high-energy pions in the Coulomb field of a heavy nucleus to extract cross sections for $π^-γ$ reactions with various final states.

SN 2009kf : a UV bright type IIP supernova discovered with Pan-STARRS 1 and GALEX

We present photometric and spectroscopic observations of a luminous type IIP Supernova 2009kf discovered by the Pan-STARRS 1 (PS1) survey and detected also by GALEX. The SN shows a plateau in its optical and bolometric light curves, lasting approximately 70 days in the rest frame, with absolute magnitude of M_V = -18.4 mag. The P-Cygni profiles of hydrogen indicate expansion velocities of 9000km/s at 61 days after discovery which is extremely high for a type IIP SN. SN 2009kf is also remarkably bright in the near-ultraviolet (NUV) and shows a slow evolution 10-20 days after optical discovery. The NUV and optical luminosity at these epochs can be modelled with a black-body with a hot effective temperature (T ~16,000 K) and a large radius (R ~1x10^{15} cm). The bright bolometric and NUV luminosity, the lightcurve peak and plateau duration, the high velocities and temperatures suggest that 2009kf is a type IIP SN powered by a larger than normal explosion energy. Recently discovered high-z SNe (0.7 < z < 2.3) have been assumed to be IIn SNe, with the bright UV luminosities due to the interaction of SN ejecta with a dense circumstellar medium (CSM). UV bright SNe similar to SN 2009kf could also account for these high-z events, and its absolute magnitude M_NUV = -21.5 +/- 0.5 mag suggests such SNe could be discovered out to z ~2.5 in the PS1 survey.

Radiative corrections to real and virtual muon Compton scattering revisited

We calculate in closed analytical form the one-photon loop radiative corrections to muon Compton scattering $μ^- γ\to μ^- γ$. Ultraviolet and infrared divergencies are both treated in dimensional regularization. Infrared finiteness of the (virtual) radiative corrections is achieved (in the standard way) by including soft photon radiation below an energy cut-off $λ$. We find that the anomalous magnetic moment $α/2π$ provides only a very small portion of the full radiative corrections. Furthermore, we extend our calculation of radiative corrections to the muon-nucleus bremsstrahlung process (or virtual muon Compton scattering $μ^-γ_0^* \to μ^- γ$). These results are particularly relevant for analyzing the COMPASS experiment at CERN in which muon-nucleus bremsstrahlung serves to calibrate the Primakoff scattering of high-energy pions off a heavy nucleus with the aim of measuring the pion electric and magnetic polarizabilities. We find agreement with an earlier calculation of these radiative corrections based on a different method.
