Universal superconducting fluctuations and the implications for the phase diagram of the cuprates

Superconductivity in the cuprates emerges from an enigmatic metallic state. There remain profound open questions regarding the universality of observed phenomena and the character of precursor fluctuations above the superconducting (SC) transition temperature (T_c). For single-CuO_2-layer La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4 (LSCO) and Bi_2(Sr,La)_2CuO_{6+δ} (Bi2201), some experiments seem to indicate an onset of SC fluctuations at very high temperatures (2-3 times T_c^{max}, the T_c value at optimal hole concentration p), whereas other measurements suggest that fluctuations are confined to the immediate vicinity of T_c(p). Here we use torque magnetization to resolve this conundrum by systematically studying LSCO, Bi2201 and HgBa_2CuO_{4+δ} (Hg1201). The latter is a more ideal single-layer compound, featuring high structural symmetry, minimal disorder, and T_c^{max} = 97 K, a value more than twice those of LSCO and Bi2201. We find in all three cases that SC diamagnetism vanishes in an unusual exponential fashion above T_c, and at a rapid rate that is universal. Furthermore, the high characteristic fluctuation temperatures of LSCO and Bi2201 closely track T_c(p) of Hg1201. These observations suggest that, rather than being indicative of SC diamagnetism, the fluctuations at high temperatures in the low-T_c^{max} compounds are associated with a competing order. This picture is further supported by an analysis of available results for double-layer cuprates.

Enhancement of Thermal Conductivity due to Spinons in the One-Dimensional Spin System SrCuO_2

We have measured the thermal conductivity along the c-axis parallel to the spin-chains, kappa_c, of the one-dimensional antiferromagnetic spin system SrCuO_2, using as-grown and O_2-annealed single-crystals grown from raw materials with 99.9% (3N) and 99.99% (4N) purity. The value of kappa_c around 50K, where large contribution of the thermal conductivity due to spinons, kappa_spinon, is observed, is markedly enhanced by both the increase of the purity of raw materials and the O_2-annealing. Therefore, the increase of kappa_c implies that kappa_spinon is enhanced due to the decrease of spin defects caused by impurities in raw materials and by oxygen defects. The mean free path of spinons is as large as about 24000 angstrom at low temperatures in the O_2-annealed single-crystal grown from raw materials with 4N purity.

Thermal Conductivity of the Quasi One-Dimensional Spin System Sr_2_V_3_O_9_

We have measured the thermal conductivity along the [101] direction, kappa_[101]_, along the [10-1] direction, kappa_[10-1]_, and along the b-axis, kappa_b_, of the quasi one-dimensional S=1/2 spin system Sr_2_V_3_O_9_ in magnetic fields up to 14 T, in order to find the thermal conductivity due to spinons and to clarify whether the spin-chains run along the [101] or [10-1] direction. It has been found that both kappa_[101]_, kappa_[10-1]_ and kappa_b_ show one peak around 10 K in zero field and that the magnitude of kappa_[10-1]_ is larger than those of kappa_[101]_ and kappa_b_. By the application of magnetic field along the heat current, the peak of kappa_[10-1]_ is markedly suppressed, while the peaks of kappa_[101]_ and kappa_b_ little change. These results indicate that there is a large contribution of spinons to kappa_[10-1]_ and suggest that the spin-chains run along the [10-1] direction.

Superconductivity-Induced Self-Energy Evolution of the Nodal Electron of Optimally-Doped Bi2212

The temperature dependent evolution of the renormalization effect in optimally-doped Bi2212 along the nodal direction has been studied via angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Fine structure is observed in the real part of the self-energy (Re$Σ$), including a subkink and maximum, suggesting that electrons couple to a spectrum of bosonic modes, instead of just one mode. Upon cooling through the superconducting phase transition, the fine structures of the extracted Re$Σ$ exhibit a two-processes evolution demonstrating an interplay between kink renormalization and superconductivity. We show that this two-process evolution can be qualitatively explained by a simple Holstein model in which a spectrum of bosonic modes is considered.

High-energy scale revival and giant kink in the dispersion of a cuprate superconductor

In the present photoemission study of a cuprate superconductor Bi1.74Pb0.38Sr1.88CuO6+delta, we discovered a large scale dispersion of the lowest band, which unexpectedly follows the band structure calculation very well. The incoherent nature of the spectra suggests that the hopping-dominated dispersion occurs possibly with the assistance of local spin correlations. A giant kink in the dispersion is observed, and the complete self-energy containing all interaction information is extracted for a doped cuprate in the low energy region. These results recovered significant missing pieces in our current understanding of the electronic structure of cuprates.

Normal state electronic structure in the heavily overdoped regime of Bi1.74Pb0.38Sr1.88CuO6+delta single-layer cuprate superconductors

We explore the electronic structure in the heavily overdoped regime of the single layer cuprate superconductor Bi1.74Pb0.38Sr1.88CuO6+delta. We found that the nodal quasiparticle behavior is dominated mostly by phonons, while the antinodal quasiparticle lineshape is dominated by spin fluctuations. Moreover, while long range spin fluctuations diminish at very high doping, the local magnetic fluctuations still dominate the quasiparticle dispersion, and the system exhibits a strange metal behavior in the entire overdoped regime.

Muon Spin Relaxation Studies of Magnetic-Field-Induced Effects in High-$T_{c}$ Superconductors

Muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR) measurements in high transverse magnetic fields ($\parallel \hat c$) revealed strong field-induced quasi-static magnetism in the underdoped and Eu doped (La,Sr)$_{2}$CuO$_{4}$ and La$_{1.875}$Ba$_{0.125}$CuO$_{4}$, existing well above $T_{c}$ and $T_{N}$. The susceptibility-counterpart of Cu spin polarization, derived from the muon spin relaxation rate, exhibits a divergent behavior towards $T \sim 25$ K. No field-induced magnetism was detected in overdoped La$_{1.81}$Sr$_{0.19}$CuO$_{4}$, optimally doped Bi2212, and Zn-doped YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7}$.

Charge-Transfer Excitations in the Model Superconductor HgBa$_2$CuO$_{\bf 4+δ}$

We report a Cu $K$-edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) study of charge-transfer excitations in the 2-8 eV range in the structurally simple compound HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4+δ}$ at optimal doping ($T_{\rm c} = 96.5 $ K). The spectra exhibit a significant dependence on the incident photon energy which we carefully utilize to resolve a multiplet of weakly-dispersive ($ < 0.5$ eV) electron-hole excitations, including a mode at 2 eV. The observation of this 2 eV excitation suggests the existence of a charge-transfer pseudogap deep in the superconducting phase. Quite generally, our data demonstrate the importance of exploring the incident photon energy dependence of the RIXS cross section.

Inhomogeneity Induces Resonance Coherence Peaks in Superconducting BSCCO

In this paper we analyze, using scanning tunneling spectroscopy, the density of electronic states in nearly optimally doped BSCCO in zero field. Focusing on the superconducting gap, we find patches of what appear to be two different phases in a background of some average gap, one with a relatively small gap and sharp large coherence peaks and one characterized by a large gap with broad weak coherence peaks. We compare these spectra with calculations of the local density of states for a simple phenomenological model in which a 2 xi_0 * 2 xi_0 patch with an enhanced or supressed d-wave gap amplitude is embedded in a region with a uniform average d-wave gap.

Normal State Spectral Lineshapes of Nodal Quasiparticles in Single Layer Bi2201 Superconductor

A detailed study of the normal state photoemission lineshapes and quasiparticle dispersion for the single layer Bi$_2$Sr$_{2-x}$La$_x$CuO$_{6+δ}$ (Bi2201) superconductor is presented. We report the first experimental evidence of a double peak structure and a dip of spectral intensity in the energy distribution curves (EDCs) along the nodal direction. The double peak structure is well identified in the normal state, up to ten times the critical temperature. As a result of the same self-energy effect, a strong mass renormalization of the quasiparticle dispersion, i.e. kink, and an increase of the quasiparticle lifetime in the normal state are also observed. Our results provide unambiguous evidence on the existence of bosonic excitation in the normal state, and support a picture where nodal quasiparticles are strongly coupled to the lattice.

Coupling Of The B1g Phonon To The Anti-Nodal Electronic States of Bi2Sr2Ca0.92Y0.08Cu2O(8+delta)

Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) on optimally doped Bi2Sr2Ca0.92Y0.08Cu2O(8+delta) uncovers a coupling of the electronic bands to a 40 meV mode in an extended k-space region away from the nodal direction, leading to a new interpretation of the strong renormalization of the electronic structure seen in Bi2212. Phenomenological agreements with neutron and Raman experiments suggest that this mode is the B1g oxygen bond-buckling phonon. A theoretical calculation based on this assignment reproduces the electronic renormalization seen in the data.

Structural and magnetic properties of the single-layer manganese oxide La{1-x}Sr{1+x}MnO4

Using x-ray and neutron scattering, we have studied the structural and magnetic properties of the single-layer manganite La{1-x}Sr{1+x}MnO4 (0 < x < 0.7). Single crystals were grown by the traveling-solvent floating-zone method at 18 La/Sr concentrations. The low-temperature phase diagram can be understood by considering the strong coupling of the magnetic and orbital degrees of freedom, and it can be divided into three distinct regions: low (x < 0.12), intermediate (0.12< x < 0.45), and high (x > 0.45) doping. LaSrMnO_4 (x=0) is an antiferromagnetic Mott insulator, and its spin-wave spectrum is well-described by linear spin-wave theory for the spin-2 square-lattice Heisenberg Hamiltonian with Ising anisotropy. Upon doping, as the e_g electron concentration (1-x) decreases, both the two-dimensional antiferromagnetic spin correlations in the paramagnetic phase and the low-temperature ordered moment decrease due to an increase of frustrating interactions, and Neel order disappears above xc = 0.115(10). In the intermediate region, there exists neither long-range magnetic nor superstructural order. Short-range-correlated structural "nanopatches" begin to form above x ~ 0.25. At high doping (x > 0.45), the ground state of La{1-x}Sr{1+x}MnO4 exhibits long-range superstructural order and a complex (CE-type) antiferromagnetic order which differs from that at low doping. The superstructural order is thought to arise from charge and orbital ordering on the Mn sites. For x > 0.50, the superstructural order becomes incommensurate with the lattice, with a modulation wavevector that depends linearly on the e_g electron concentration. On the other hand, the magnetic order remains commensurate, but loses its long-range coherence upon doping beyond x = 0.50.

Periodic Coherence Peak Height Modulations in Superconducting BSCCO

In this paper we analyze, using scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS), the local density of electronic states (LDOS) in nearly optimally doped BSCCO in zero field. We see both dispersive and non-dispersive spatial LDOS modulations as a function of energy in our samples. Moreover, a spatial map of the superconducting coherence peak heights shows the same structure as the low energy LDOS. This suggests that these non-dispersive LDOS modulations originate from an underlying charge-density modulation which interacts with superconductivity.

Effect of chemical inhomogeneity in the bismuth-based copper oxide superconductors

We examine the effect on the superconducting transition temperature (Tc) of chemical inhomogeneities in Bi2201 and Bi2212 single crystals. Cation disorder at the Sr crystallographic site is inherent in these materials and strongly affects the value of Tc. Partial substitution of Sr by Ln (Ln = La, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, and Bi) in Bi_{2}Sr_{1.6}Ln_{0.4}CuO_{6} results in a monotonic decrease of Tc with increasing ionic radius mismatch. By minimizing Sr site disorder at the expense of Ca site disorder, we demonstrate that the Tc of Bi2212 can be increased to 96 K. Based on these results we discuss the effects of chemical inhomogeneity in other bulk high-temperature superconductors.

An angle-resolved photoemission spectral function analysis of the electron doped cuprate Nd_1.85Ce_0.15CuO_4

Using methods made possible by recent advances in photoemission technology, we perform an indepth line-shape analysis of the angle-resolved photoemission spectra of the electron doped (n-type) cuprate superconductor Nd_1.85Ce_0.15CuO_4. Unlike for the p-type materials, we only observe weak mass renormalizations near 50-70 meV. This may be indicative of smaller electron-phonon coupling or due to the masking effects of other interactions that make the electron-phonon coupling harder to detect. This latter scenario may suggest limitations of the spectral function analysis in extracting electronic self-energies when some of the interactions are highly momentum dependent.

Periodic Density of States Modulations in Superconducting $\rm Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+δ}$

In this paper we show, using scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS), the existence of static striped density of electronic states in nearly optimally doped $\rm Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+δ}$ in zero field. The observed modulation is strongest at roughly half the superconducting gap energy and is aligned with the Cu-O bonds, with a periodicity of four lattice constants, exhibiting features characteristic of a two-dimensional system of line objects. These features also exhibit asymmetries between the two orthogonal directions locally, pointing to a possible broken symmetry state (i. e., stripe phase). We further show that the density of states modulation manifests itself as a shift of states from above to below the superconducting gap. The fact that a single energy scale (i. e., the gap) appears for both superconductivity and stripes suggests that these two effects have the same microscopic origin.

Doping dependence of an n-type cuprate superconductor investigated by ARPES

We present an angle resolved photoemission (ARPES) doping dependence study of the n-type cuprate superconductor Nd_2-xCe_xCuO_4, from the half-filled Mott-insulator to the T_c=24K superconductor. In Nd2CuO4, we reveal the charge-transfer band (CTB) for the first time. As electrons are doped into the system, this feature's intensity decreases with the concomitant formation of near-E_F spectral weight. At low doping, the Fermi surface is an electron-pocket (with volume ~ x) centered at (pi,0). Further doping leads to the creation of a new hole-like Fermi surface (volume ~ 1+x) centered at (pi,pi). These findings shed light on the Mott gap, its doping evolution, as well as the anomalous transport properties of the n-type cuprates.
