Temperature - Pressure phase diagram of the cubic Laves phase Au$_2$Pb

The temperature ($T$) as a function of pressure ($P$) phase diagram is reported for the cubic Laves phase compound Au$_2$Pb, which was recently proposed to support linearly dispersing "topological" bands, together with conventional quadratic bands. At ambient pressure, Au$_2$Pb exhibits several structural phase transitions at $T_1$ $=$ 97 K, $T_2$ $=$ 51 K, and $T_3$ $=$ 40 K with superconductivity below $T_{\rm{c}}$ $=$ 1.2 K. Applied pressure results in a rich phase diagram where $T_1$, $T_2$, and $T_3$ evolve strongly with $P$ and a new phase is stabilized for $P$ $>$ 0.64 GPa that also supports superconductivity below 1.1 K. These observations suggest that Au$_2$Pb is an ideal system in which to investigate the relationship between structural degrees of freedom, band topology, and resulting anomalous behaviors.

Unfolding the physics of URu2Si2 through Si -> P substitution

The heavy fermion intermetallic compound URu2Si2 exhibits a "hidden-order" phase below the temperature of 17.5 K, which supports both anomalous metallic behavior and unconventional superconductivity. While these individual phenomena have been investigated in detail, it remains unclear how they are related to each other and to what extent uranium f-electron valence fluctuations influence each one. Here we use ligand site substituted URu2Si2-xPx to establish their evolution under electronic tuning. We find that while hidden order is monotonically suppressed and destroyed for x $\leq$ 0.035, the superconducting strength evolves through a dome that is centered near $x$ $\approx$ 0.01 and terminates near $x$ $\approx$ 0.028. This behavior reveals that hidden order depends strongly on tuning outside of the U f-electron shells. It also suggests that while hidden order provides an environment for superconductivity and anomalous metallic behavior, it's fluctuations are not solely responsible for their progression.

Role of spin-orbit coupling and evolution of the electronic structure of WTe$_2$ under an external magnetic field

Here, we present a detailed study on the temperature and angular dependence of the Shubnikov-de-Haas (SdH) effect in the semi-metal WTe$_2$. This compound was recently shown to display a very large non-saturating magnetoresistance which was attributed to nearly perfectly compensated densities of electrons and holes. We observe four fundamental SdH frequencies and attribute them to spin-orbit split, electron- and hole-like, Fermi surface (FS) cross-sectional areas. Their angular dependence seems consistent with ellipsoidal FSs with volumes suggesting a modest excess in the density of electrons with respect to that of the holes. We show that density functional theory (DFT) calculations fail to correctly describe the FSs of WTe$_2$. When their cross-sectional areas are adjusted to reflect the experimental data, the resulting volumes of the electron/hole FSs obtained from the DFT calculations would imply a pronounced imbalance between the densities of electrons and holes. We find evidence for field-dependent Fermi surface cross-sectional areas by fitting the oscillatory component superimposed onto the magnetoresistivity signal to several Lifshitz-Kosevich components. We also observe a pronounced field-induced renormalization of the effective masses. Taken together, our observations suggest that the electronic structure of WTe$_2$ evolves with the magnetic field. This evolution might be a factor contributing to its pronounced magnetoresistivity.

Spin-Orbit-Induced Orbital Excitations in Sr2RuO4 and Ca2RuO4: A Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering Study

High-resolution resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) at the oxygen K-edge has been used to study the orbital excitations of Ca2RuO4 and Sr2RuO4. In combination with linear dichroism X-ray absorption spectroscopy, the ruthenium 4d-orbital occupation and excitations were probed through their hybridization with the oxygen p-orbitals. These results are described within a minimal model, taking into account crystal field splitting and a spin-orbit coupling λ_{so}=200~meV. The effects of spin-orbit interaction on the electronic structure and implications for the Mott and superconducting ground states of (Ca,Sr)2RuO4 are discussed.

Spin-charge-lattice coupling near the metal-insulator transition in Ca3Ru2O7

We report x-ray scattering studies of the c-axis lattice parameter in Ca3Ru2O7 as a function of temperature and magnetic field. These structural studies complement published transport and magnetization data, and therefore elucidate the spin-charge-lattice coupling near the metal-insulator transition. Strong anisotropy of the structural change for field applied along orthogonal in-plane directions is observed. Competition between a spin-polarized phase that does not couple to the lattice, and an antiferromagnetic metallic phase, which does, gives rise to rich behavior for B $\parallel$ b.

Orbital-dependent metamagnetic response in Sr4Ru3O10

We show that the metamagnetic transition in Sr$_4$Ru$_3$O$_{10}$ bifurcates into two transitions as the field is rotated away from the conducting planes. This two-step process comprises partial or total alignment of moments in ferromagnetic bands followed by an itinerant metamagnetic transition whose critical field increases with rotation. Evidence for itinerant metamagnetism is provided by the Shubnikov-de Hass effect which shows a non-trivial evolution of the geometry of the Fermi surface and an enhancement of the quasiparticles effective-mass across the transition. The metamagnetic response of Sr$_4$Ru$_3$O$_{10}$ is orbital-dependent and involves ferromagnetic and metamagnetic bands.

Spectroscopy of SrRuO/Ru Junctions in Eutectic

We have investigated the tunnelling properties of the interface between superconducting Sr2RuO4 and a single Ru inclusion in eutectic. By using a micro-fabrication technique, we have made Sr2RuO4/Ru junctions on the eutectic system that consists of Sr2RuO4 and Ru micro-inclusions. Such a eutectic system exhibits surface superconductivity, called the 3-K phase. A zero bias conductance peak (ZBCP) was observed in the 3-K phase. We propose to use the onset of the ZBCP to delineate the phase boundary of a time-reversal symmetry breaking state.

Dynamical Properties of Charged Stripes in La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4

Inelastic light-scattering spectra of underdoped ${\rm La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4}$ (LSCO) single crystals are presented which provide direct evidence of the formation of quasi one-dimensional charged structures in the two-dimensional $\rm CuO_2$ planes. The ``stripes'' manifest themselves in a Drude-like peak at low energies and temperatures. The selection rules allow us to determine the orientation to be along the diagonals at $x=0.02$ and along the principal axes at $x=0.10$. The electron-lattice interaction determines the correlation length which turns out to be larger in compound classes with lower superconducting transition temperatures. Temperature is the only scale of the response at different doping levels demonstrating the importance of quantum critical behavior.

Tunneling properties at the interface between superconducting Sr2RuO4 and a Ru micro-inclusion

We have investigated the magnetic field and temperature dependence of the tunneling spectra of the eutectic system Sr2RuO4-Ru. Electric contacts to individual Ru lamellae embedded in Sr2RuO4 enable the tunneling spectra at the interface between ruthenate and a Ru microinclusion to be measured. A zero bias conductance peak (ZBCP) was observed in the bias voltage dependence of the differential conductance, suggesting that Andreev bound states are present at the interface. The ZBCP starts to appear at a temperature well below the superconducting transition temperature. The onset magnetic field of the ZBCP is also considerably smaller than the upper critical field when the magnetic field is parallel to the ab-plane. We propose that the difference between the onset of the ZBCP and the onset of superconductivity can be understood in terms of the existence of the single-component state predicted by Sigrist and Monien.

Low-Temperature Hall Effect in Substituted Sr2RuO4

We report the results of a study of the Hall effect and magnetoresistance in single crystals of Sr2RuO4 in which Sr^(2+) has been substituted by La^(3+) (Sr(2-y)La(y)RuO(4)) or Ru^(4+) by Ti^(4+) (Sr(2)Ru(1-x)Ti(x)O(4)). For undoped Sr2RuO4, the purity is so high that the strong-field Hall coefficient can be measured for fields above 4 T. The conventional weak-field Hall coefficient as a function of doping shows a sharp jump and sign change at y ~ 0.01 that is unrelated to either a sharp change in Fermi-surface topography or a magnetic instability. The implications of these results are discussed.

Band-Selective Modification of the Magnetic Fluctuations in Sr2RuO4: Study of Substitution Effects

We report a study of magnetic, thermal, and transport properties of La(3+) substituted Sr2RuO4, performed in order to investigate the effects of additional electron doping in this correlated metal. A gradual enhancement of the electronic part of specific heat and a more drastic increase of the static magnetic susceptibility were observed in Sr(2-y)La(y)RuO(4) with increasing y. Furthermore, the quasi-two-dimensional Fermi-liquid behavior seen in pure Sr2RuO4 breaks down near the critical concentration y ~ 0.20. Combined with a realistic tight-binding model with rigid-band shift of Fermi level, the enhancement of the density of states can be ascribed to the elevation of the Fermi energy toward a van Hove singularity of the thermodynamically dominant γFermi-surface sheet. On approaching the van Hove singularity, the effective nesting-vector of the γband shrinks and further enhances the susceptibility near the wave vector q ~ 0. We attribute the non-Fermi-liquid behavior to two-dimensional ferromagnetic fluctuations with short range correlations at the van Hove singularity. The observed behavior is in sharp contrast to that of Ti(4+) substitution in Sr2RuO4 which enhances antiferromagnetic fluctuations and subsequently induces incommensurate magnetic ordering associated with the nesting between the other Fermi-surface sheets (αand β). We thus establish that substitution of appropriate chemical dopants can band-selectively modify the spin-fluctuation spectrum in the spin-triplet superconductor Sr2RuO4.

The de Haas-van Alphen effect across the metamagnetic transition in Sr$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$

We report a study of the de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) effect on the itinerant metamagnet Sr$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$. Extremely high sample purity allows the observation of dHvA oscillations both above and below the metamagnetic transition field of 7.9 T. The quasiparticle masses are fairly large away from the transition, and are enhanced by up to an extra factor of three as the transition is approached, but the Fermi surface topography change is quite small. The results are qualitatively consistent with a field-induced Stoner transition in which the mass enhancement is the result of critical fluctuations.

Rigid-Band Shift of the Fermi Level in a Strongly Correlated Metal: Sr(2-y)La(y)RuO(4)

We report a systematic study of electron doping of Sr2RuO4 by non-isovalent substitution of La^(3+) for Sr^(2+). Using a combination of de Haas-van Alphen oscillations, specific heat, and resistivity measurements, we show that electron doping leads to a rigid-band shift of the Fermi level corresponding to one doped electron per La ion, with constant many-body quasiparticle mass enhancement over the band mass. The susceptibility spectrum is substantially altered and enhanced by the doping but this has surprisingly little effect on the strength of the unconventional superconducting pairing.

Anisotropy of the incommensurate fluctuations in Sr2RuO4: a study with polarized neutrons

The anisotropy of the magnetic incommensurate fluctuations in Sr2RuO4 has been studied by inelastic neutron scattering with polarized neutrons. We find a sizeable enhancement of the out of plane component by a factor of two for intermediate energy transfer which appears to decrease for higher energies. Our results qualitatively confirm calculations of the spin-orbit coupling, but the experimental anisotropy and its energy dependence are weaker than predicted.

Raman Scattering versus Infrared Conductivity: Evidence for one-dimensional Conduction in La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4}

Raman and Infrared (IR) spectra of an underdoped La_{1.90}Sr_{0.10}CuO_{4} single crystal have been measured as a function of temperature. Both techniques provide unconventional low-energy spectra. The IR conductivity exhibits features peaked at finite frequencies which do not have a counterpart in the Raman response. Below approximately 100 K a transfer of both Raman and IR spectral weight towards lower energies is found and a new component in the Raman response builds up being characterized by a very long lifetime of electrons propagating along the Cu-O bonds.

Universal Heat Transport in Sr2RuO4

We present the temperature dependence of the thermal conductivity kappa(T) of the unconventional superconductor Sr_2RuO_4 down to low temperatures (100 mK). In T -> 0 K limit we found a finite residual term in kappa/T, providing clear evidence for the superconducting state with an unconventional pairing. The residual term remains unchanged for samples with different T_c, demonstrating the universal character of heat transport in this spin-triplet superconductor. The low-temperature behavior of kappa suggests the strong impurity scattering with a phase shift close to pi/2. A criterion for the observation of universality is experimentally deduced.

Infrared signatures of charge stripes in La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4)

The in-plane optical conductivity of seven La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4) single crystals with x between 0 and 0.15 has been studied from 30 to 295 K. All doped samples exhibit strong peaks in the far-infrared, which closely resemble those observed in Cu-O "ladders" with one-dimensional charge-ordering. The behavior with doping and temperature of the peak energy, width, and intensity allows us to conclude that we are observing charge stripes dynamics in La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4) on the fast time scale of infrared spectroscopy.
