The open XXZ spin chain in the SoV framework: scalar product of separate states

In our previous paper [1] we have obtained, for the XXX spin-1/2 Heisenberg open chain, new determinant representations for the scalar products of separate states in the quantum separation of variables (SoV) framework. In this article we perform a similar study in a more complicated case: the XXZ open spin-1/2 chain with the most general integrable boundary terms. To solve this model by means of SoV we use an algebraic Vertex-IRF gauge transformation reducing one of the boundary K-matrices to a diagonal form. As usual within the SoV approach, the scalar products of separate states are computed in terms of dressed Vandermonde determinants having an intricate dependency on the inhomogeneity parameters. We show that these determinants can be transformed into different ones in which the homogeneous limit can be taken straightforwardly. These representations generalize in a non-trivial manner to the trigonometric case the expressions found previously in the rational case. We also show that generically all scalar products can be expressed in a form which is similar to - although more cumbersome than - the well-known Slavnov determinant representation for the scalar products of the Bethe states of the periodic chain. Considering a special choice of the boundary parameters relevant in the thermodynamic limit to describe the half infinite chain with a general boundary, we particularize these representations to the case of one of the two states being an eigenstate. We obtain simplified formulas that should be of direct use to compute the form factors and correlation functions of this model.

The open XXX spin chain in the SoV framework: scalar product of separate states

We consider the XXX open spin-1/2 chain with the most general non-diagonal boundary terms, that we solve by means of the quantum separation of variables (SoV) approach. We compute the scalar products of separate states, a class of states which notably contains all the eigenstates of the model. As usual for models solved by SoV, these scalar products can be expressed as some determinants with a non-trivial dependance in terms of the inhomogeneity parameters that have to be introduced for the method to be applicable. We show that these determinants can be transformed into alternative ones in which the homogeneous limit can easily be taken. These new representations can be considered as generalizations of the well-known determinant representation for the scalar products of the Bethe states of the periodic chain. In the particular case where a constraint is applied on the boundary parameters, such that the transfer matrix spectrum and eigenstates can be characterized in terms of polynomial solutions of a usual T-Q equation, the scalar product that we compute here corresponds to the scalar product between two off-shell Bethe-type states. If in addition one of the states is an eigenstate, the determinant representation can be simplified, hence leading in this boundary case to direct analogues of algebraic Bethe ansatz determinant representations of the scalar products for the periodic chain.

On determinant representations of scalar products and form factors in the SoV approach: the XXX case

In the present article we study the form factors of quantum integrable lattice models solvable by the separation of variables (SoV) method. It was recently shown that these models admit universal determinant representations for the scalar products of the so-called separate states (a class which includes in particular all the eigenstates of the transfer matrix). These results permit to obtain simple expressions for the matrix elements of local operators (form factors). However, these representations have been obtained up to now only for the completely inhomogeneous versions of the lattice models considered. In this article we give a simple algebraic procedure to rewrite the scalar products (and hence the form factors) for the SoV related models as Izergin or Slavnov type determinants. This new form leads to simple expressions for the form factors in the homogeneous and thermodynamic limits. To make the presentation of our method clear, we have chosen to explain it first for the simple case of the $XXX$ Heisenberg chain with anti-periodic boundary conditions. We would nevertheless like to stress that the approach presented in this article applies as well to a wide range of models solved in the SoV framework.

Open spin chains with generic integrable boundaries: Baxter equation and Bethe ansatz completeness from SOV

We solve the longstanding problem to define a functional characterization of the spectrum of the transfer matrix associated to the most general spin-1/2 representations of the 6-vertex reflection algebra for general inhomogeneous chains. The corresponding homogeneous limit reproduces the spectrum of the Hamiltonian of the spin-1/2 open XXZ and XXX quantum chains with the most general integrable boundaries. The spectrum is characterized by a second order finite difference functional equation of Baxter type with an inhomogeneous term which vanishes only for some special but yet interesting non-diagonal boundary conditions. This functional equation is shown to be equivalent to the known separation of variable (SOV) representation hence proving that it defines a complete characterization of the transfer matrix spectrum. The polynomial character of the Q-function allows us then to show that a finite system of equations of generalized Bethe type can be similarly used to describe the complete transfer matrix spectrum.

Long-distance asymptotic behaviour of multi-point correlation functions in massless quantum models

We provide a microscopic model setting that allows us to readily access to the large-distance asymptotic behaviour of multi-point correlation functions in massless, one-dimensional, quantum models. The method of analysis we propose is based on the form factor expansion of the correlation functions and does not build on any field theory reasonings. It constitutes an extension of the restricted sum techniques leading to the large-distance asymptotic behaviour of two-point correlation functions obtained previously.

Complete spectrum and scalar products for the open spin-1/2 XXZ quantum chains with non-diagonal boundary terms

We use the quantum separation of variable (SOV) method to construct the eigenstates of the open XXZ chain with the most general boundary terms. The eigenstates in the inhomogeneous case are constructed in terms of solutions of a system of quadratic equations. This SOV representation permits us to compute scalar products and can be used to calculate form factors and correlation functions.

Form factor approach to dynamical correlation functions in critical models

We develop a form factor approach to the study of dynamical correlation functions of quantum integrable models in the critical regime. As an example, we consider the quantum non-linear Schrödinger model. We derive long-distance/long-time asymptotic behavior of various two-point functions of this model. We also compute edge exponents and amplitudes characterizing the power-law behavior of dynamical response functions on the particle/hole excitation thresholds. These last results confirm predictions based on the non-linear Luttinger liquid method. Our results rely on a first principles derivation, based on the microscopic analysis of the model, without invoking, at any stage, some correspondence with a continuous field theory. Furthermore, our approach only makes use of certain general properties of the model, so that it should be applicable, with possibly minor modifications, to a wide class of (not necessarily integrable) gapless one dimensional Hamiltonians.

Form factor approach to the asymptotic behavior of correlation functions in critical models

We propose a form factor approach for the computation of the large distance asymptotic behavior of correlation functions in quantum critical (integrable) models. In the large distance regime we reduce the summation over all excited states to one over the particle/hole excitations lying on the Fermi surface in the thermodynamic limit. We compute these sums, over the so-called critical form factors, exactly. Thus we obtain the leading large distance behavior of each oscillating harmonic of the correlation function asymptotic expansion, including the corresponding amplitudes. Our method is applicable to a wide variety of integrable models and yields precisely the results stemming from the Luttinger liquid approach, the conformal field theory predictions and our previous analysis of the correlation functions from their multiple integral representations. We argue that our scheme applies to a general class of non-integrable quantum critical models as well.

Riemann-Hilbert approach to a generalized sine kernel and applications

We investigate the asymptotic behavior of a generalized sine kernel acting on a finite size interval [-q,q]. We determine its asymptotic resolvent as well as the first terms in the asymptotic expansion of its Fredholm determinant. Further, we apply our results to build the resolvent of truncated Wiener--Hopf operators generated by holomorphic symbols. Finally, the leading asymptotics of the Fredholm determinant allows us to establish the asymptotic estimates of certain oscillatory multidimensional coupled integrals that appear in the study of correlation functions of quantum integrable models.

Thermodynamic limit of particle-hole form factors in the massless XXZ Heisenberg chain

We study the thermodynamic limit of the particle-hole form factors of the XXZ Heisenberg chain in the massless regime. We show that, in this limit, such form factors decrease as an explicitly computed power-law in the system-size. Moreover, the corresponding amplitudes can be obtained as a product of a "smooth" and a "discrete" part: the former depends continuously on the rapidities of the particles and holes, whereas the latter has an additional explicit dependence on the set of integer numbers that label each excited state in the associated logarithmic Bethe equations. We also show that special form factors corresponding to zero-energy excitations lying on the Fermi surface decrease as a power-law in the system size with the same critical exponents as in the long-distance asymptotic behavior of the related two-point correlation functions. The methods we develop in this article are rather general and can be applied to other massless integrable models associated to the six-vertex R-matrix and having determinant representations for their form factors.

On the thermodynamic limit of form factors in the massless XXZ Heisenberg chain

We consider the problem of computing form factors of the massless XXZ Heisenberg spin-1/2 chain in a magnetic field in the (thermodynamic) limit where the size M of the chain becomes large. For that purpose, we take the particular example of the matrix element of the third component of spin between the ground state and an excited state with one particle and one hole located at the opposite ends of the Fermi interval (umklapp-type term). We exhibit its power-law decrease in terms of the size of the chain M, and compute the corresponding exponent and amplitude. As a consequence, we show that this form factor is directly related to the amplitude of the leading oscillating term in the long-distance asymptotic expansion of the two-point correlation function of the third component of spin.

Algebraic Bethe ansatz approach to the asymptotic behavior of correlation functions

We describe a method to derive, from first principles, the long-distance asymptotic behavior of correlation functions of integrable models in the framework of the algebraic Bethe ansatz. We apply this approach to the longitudinal spin- spin correlation function of the XXZ Heisenberg spin-1/2 chain (with magnetic field) in the disordered regime as well as to the density-density correlation func- tion of the interacting one-dimensional Bose gas. At leading order, the results confirm the Luttinger liquid and conformal field theory predictions.

Correlation functions of the open XXZ chain II

We derive compact multiple integral formulas for several physical spin correlation functions in the semi-infinite XXZ chain with a longitudinal boundary magnetic field. Our formulas follow from several effective re-summations of the multiple integral representation for the elementary blocks obtained in our previous article (I). In the free fermion point we compute the local magnetization as well as the density of energy profiles. These quantities, in addition to their bulk behavior, exhibit Friedel type oscillations induced by the boundary; their amplitudes depend on the boundary magnetic field and decay algebraically in terms of the distance to the boundary.

Correlation functions of the open XXZ chain I

We consider the XXZ spin chain with diagonal boundary conditions in the framework of algebraic Bethe Ansatz. Using the explicit computation of the scalar products of Bethe states and a revisited version of the bulk inverse problem, we calculate the elementary building blocks for the correlation functions. In the limit of half-infinite chain, they are obtained as multiple integrals of usual functions, similar to the case of periodic boundary conditions.

On correlation functions of integrable models associated to the six-vertex R-matrix

We derive an analog of the master equation obtained recently for correlation functions of the XXZ chain for a wide class of quantum integrable systems described by the R-matrix of the six-vertex model, including in particular continuum models. This generalized master equation allows us to obtain multiple integral representations for the correlation functions of these models. We apply this method to derive the density-density correlation functions of the quantum non-linear Schrodinger model.

Exact results for the sigma^z two-point function of the XXZ chain at Delta=1/2

We propose a new multiple integral representation for the correlation function of the XXZ spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain in the disordered regime. We show that for Delta=1/2 the integrals can be separated and computed exactly. As an example we give the explicit results up to the lattice distance m=8. It turns out that the answer is given as integer numbers divided by 2^[(m+1)^2].

On the algebraic Bethe Ansatz approach to the correlation functions of the XXZ spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain

We present a review of the method we have elaborated to compute the correlation functions of the XXZ spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain. This method is based on the resolution of the quantum inverse scattering problem in the algebraic Bethe Ansatz framework, and leads to a multiple integral representation of the dynamical correlation functions. We describe in particular some recent advances concerning the two-point functions: in the finite chain, they can be expressed in terms of a single multiple integral. Such a formula provides a direct analytic connection between the previously obtained multiple integral representations and the form factor expansions for the correlation functions.
