Infrared scattering rate of overdoped Tl$_{2}$Ba$_{2}$CuO$_{6+δ}$

We present in-plane optical study on Tl$_{2}$Ba$_{2}$CuO$_{6+δ}$ single crystals with substantially different $T_c$. The study reveals that the overdoping does not lead to a further increase of the carrier density but a decrease of scattering rate. The most significant change occurs at low temperature and in the low frequency. A characteristic spectral feature, seen most clearly for the optimally doped sample and commonly ascribed to the mode coupling effect, weakens with doping and disappears in the heavily overdoped sample. Meanwhile, the optical scattering rate evolves from a linear-$ω$ dependence to an upward curvature lineshape. Both the temperature and frequency dependence of the scattering rate can be described by a power law relation. We elaborate that the overall decrease of the optical scattering rate originates from the increase of both the quasiparticle life time and the Fermi velocity near the ($π$,0) region in the Fermi surface.

Evidence of s-wave pairing symmetry in layered superconductor Li$_{0.68}$NbO$_2$ from the specific heat measurement

A high quality superconducting Li$_{0.68}$NbO$_2$ polycrystalline sample was synthesized by deintercalation of Li ions from Li$_{0.93}$NbO$_2$. The field dependent resistivity and specific heat were measured down to 0.5 K. The upper critical field $H_{c2} (T)$ is deduced from the resistivity data and $H_{c2}(0)$ is estimated to be $\sim 2.98$ T. A notable specific heat jump is observed at the superconducting transition temperature $T_c \sim 5.0$ K at zero field. Below $T_c$, the electronic specific heat shows a thermal activated behavior and agrees well with the theoretical result of the BCS s-wave superconductors. It indicates that the superconducting pairing in Li$_{0.68}$NbO$_2$ has s-wave symmetry.

Electron-boson mode coupling and the pseudogap of Na$_x$CoO$_2$ by infrared spectroscopy

We report the in-plane optical measurements on Na$_x$CoO$_2$ with 0.18$\leq$x$\leq$0.92. The crystal growth and characterization were described in detail. The spectral weight increases monotonically with decreasing x. For sample with the lowest Na content x$\sim$0.18, the optical conductivity was strongly suppressed below 2200 $cm^{-1}$ at low temperature. The suppression becomes weaker with increasing Na content, and disappears in charge-ordered sample with x$\sim$0.5. At higher Na contents, similar suppression appears again but locates at higher energy scale near 3300 $cm^{-1}$. Our analysis indicates that those spectral features are dominated by a combination of electrons coupling to a bosonic mode and a pseudogap-like phenomenon. We suggest that the pseudogap-like phenomenon is purely a band structure effect. The infrared activated phonon modes were discussed in relation with the structural geometries.

In-plane substitution effect on the magnetic properties of two-dimensional Spin-gap system SrCu$_2$(BO$_3$)$_2$

A series of in-plane substituted compounds, including Cu-site (SrZn$_x$Cu$_{2-x}$(BO$_3$)$_2$), and B-site (SrCu$_2$(Si$_x$B$_{1-x}$O$_3$)$_2$) substitution, were synthesized by solid state reaction. X-ray diffraction measurements reveal that these compounds are single-phase materials and their in-plane lattice parameter depends systematically on the substituting content $x$. The magnetic susceptibility in different magnetic fields, the magnetization at different temperatures, and the resistivity at room temperature were measured, respectively. It is found that the spin gap deduced from the magnetic susceptibility measurements decreases with increasing of $x$ in both Cu- and B-site substitution. No superconductivity was found in these substituted compounds.

Optical properties of boron-doped diamond

We report optical reflectivity study on pure and boron-doped diamond films grown by a hot-filament chemical vapor deposition method. The study reveals the formation of an impurity band close to the top of the valence band upon boron-doping. A schematic picture for the evolution of the electronic structure with boron doping was drawn based on the experimental observation. The study also reveals that the boron doping induces local lattice distortion, which brings an infrared-forbidden phonon mode at 1330 cm$^{-1}$ activated in doped sample. The antiresonance characteristic of the mode in conductivity spectrum evidences the very strong coupling between electrons and this phonon mode.

Doping evolution of chemical potential, spin-correlation gap, and charge dynamics in Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_4$

We report optical reflectivity study on Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_4$ over a broad doping range 0$\leq x\leq$0.20. The study reveals a systematic shift of chemical potential with doping. A pronounced peak structure specific to the electron-doped cuprate is observed in optical scattering rate based on the extended Drude model analysis. The energy scale of the peak could be very different from that of the peak in conductivity spectrum. We clarify that the "hot spots" gap probed in photoemission experiments correlates directly with the sharp suppression feature in scattering rate rather than conductivity spectra. The gap is associated with the short-range antiferromagnetic correlation, and disappears in a manner of fading away with increasing doping and temperature. In the heavily overdoped region, a dominant $ω^2$-dependence of the scattering rate is identified up to very high energy.

Crystal growth and in-plane optical properties of Tl$_2$Ba$_2$Ca$_{n-1}$Cu$_n$O$_x$ (n=1,2,3) superconductors

Single crystals of thallium-based cuprates with the general formula Tl$_{2}$Ba$_{2}$Ca$_{n-1}$Cu$_{n}$O$_{x}$(n=1,2,3) have been grown by the flux method. The superconducting transition temperatures determined by the ac magnetic susceptibility are 92 K, 109 K, and 119 K for n=1,2,3 respectively. X-ray diffraction measurements and EDX compositional analysis were described. We measured in-plane optical reflectance from room temperature down to 10 K, placing emphasis on Tl-2223. The reflectance roughly has a linear-frequency dependence above superconducting transition temperature, but displays a pronounced knee structure together with a dip-like feature at higher frequency below T$_c$. Correspondingly, the ratio of the reflectances below and above T$_{c}$ displays a maximum and a minimum near those feature frequencies. In particular, those features in Tl2223 appear at higher energy scale than Tl2212, and Tl2201. The optical data are analyzed in terms of spectral function. We discussed the physical consequences of the data in terms of both clean and dirty limit.

Optical properties of $MgCNi_3$ in the normal state

We present the optical reflectance and conductivity spectra for non-oxide antiperovskite superconductor $MgCNi_{3}$ at different temperatures. The reflectance drops gradually over a large energy scale up to 33,000 cm$^{-1}$, with the presence of several wiggles. The reflectance has slight temperature dependence at low frequency but becomes temperature independent at high frequency. The optical conductivity shows a Drude response at low frequencies and four broad absorption features in the frequency range from 600 $cm^{-1}$ to 33,000 $cm^{-1}$. We illustrate that those features can be well understood from the intra- and interband transitions between different components of Ni 3d bands which are hybridized with C 2p bands. There is a good agreement between our experimental data and the first-principle band structure calculations.

Angular-dependent Magnetoresistance Oscillations in Na$_{0.48}$CoO$_{2}$ Single Crystal

We report measurements of the c-axis angular-dependent magnetoresistance (AMR) for a Na$_{0.48}$CoO$_{2}$ single crystal, with a magnetic field of 10 T rotating within Co-O planes. Below the metal-insulator transition temperature induced by the charge ordering, the oscillation of the AMR is dominated by a two-fold rotational symmetry. The amplitudes of the oscillation corresponding to the four- and six-fold rotational symmetries are distinctive in low temperatures, but they merge into the background simultaneously at about 25 K. The six-fold oscillation originates naturally from the lattice symmetry. The observation of the four-fold rotational symmetry is consistent with the picture proposed by Choy, et al., that the Co lattice in the charge ordered state will split into two orthorhombic sublattice with one occupied by Co$^{3+}$ ions and the other by Co$^{4+}$ ions. We have also measured the c-axis AMR for Na$_{0.35}$CoO$_{2}$ and Na$_{0.85}$CoO$_{2}$ single crystals, and found no evidence for the existence of two- and four-fold symmetries.

Hysteresis and Anisotropic Magnetoresistance in Antiferromagnetic $Nd_{2-x}Ce_xCuO_{4}$

The out-of-plane resistivity ($ρ_c$) and magnetoresistivity (MR) are studied in antiferromangetic (AF) $Nd_{2-x}Ce_xCuO_{4}$ single crystals, which have three types of noncollinear antiferromangetic spin structures. The apparent signatures are observed in $ρ_c(T)$ measured at the zero-field and 14 T at the spin structure transitions, giving a definite evidence for the itinerant electrons directly coupled to the localized spins. One of striking feature is an anisotropy of the MR with a fourfold symmetry upon rotating the external field (B) within ab plane in the different phases, while twofold symmetry at spin reorientation transition temperatures. The intriguing thermal hysteresis in $ρ_c(T,B)$ and magnetic hysteresis in MR are observed at spin reorientation transition temperatures.

Structural Phase Transitions and Sodium Ordering in Na0.5CoO2: a Combined Electron Diffraction and Raman Spectroscopy Study

The nonstoichiometric NaxCoO2 system exhibits extraordinary physical properties that correlate with temperature and Na concentration in its layered lattice without evident long-range structure modification when conventional crystallographic techniques are applied. For instance, Na0.7CoO2, a thermodynamically stable phase, shows large thermoelectric power; water-intercalated Na0.33CoO2.1.3H2O is a newly discovered superconductor with Tc ~ 4K, and Na0.5CoO2 exhibits an unexpected charge ordering transition at around Tco ~ 55 K. Recent studies suggest that the transport and magnetic properties in the NaxCoO2 system strongly depend on the charge carrier density and local structural properties. Here we report a combined variable temperature transmission electron microscopy and Raman scattering investigation on structural transformations in Na0.5CoO2 single crystals. A series of structural phase transitions in the temperature range from 80 K to 1000 K are directly identified and the observed superstructures and modulated phases can be interpreted by Na-ordering. The Raman scattering measurements reveal phase separation and a systematic evolution of active modes along with phase transitions. Our work demonstrates that the high mobility and ordering of sodium cations among the CoO2 layers are a key factor for the presence of complex structural properties in NaxCoO2 materials, and also demonstrate that the combination of electron diffraction and Raman spectroscopy measurements is an efficient way for studying the cation ordering and phase transitions in related systems.

Marginal Fermi liquid analysis of 300 K reflectance of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x

We use 300 K reflectance data to investigate the normal-state electrodynamics of the high temperature superconductor Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8+δ}$ over a wide range of doping levels. The data show that at this temperature the free carriers are coupled to a continuous spectrum of fluctuations. Assuming the Marginal Fermi Liquid (MFL) form as a first approximation for the fluctuation spectrum, the doping-dependent coupling constant $λ(p)$ can be estimated directly from the slope of the reflectance spectrum. We find that $λ(p)$ decreases smoothly with the hole doping level, from underdoped samples with $ p=0.103$ ($T_c = 67$ K) where $λ(p)= 0.93$ to overdoped samples with $p=0.226$, ($T_c= 60$ K) where $λ(p)= 0.53$. An analysis of the intercept and curvature of the reflectance spectrum shows deviations from the MFL spectrum symmetrically placed at the optimal doping point $p=0.16$. The Kubo formula for the conductivity gives a better fit to the experiments with the MFL spectrum up to 2000 cm$^{-1}$ and with an additional Drude component or an additional Lorentz component up to 7000 cm$^{-1}$. By comparing three different model fits we conclude that the MFL channel is necessary for a good fit to the reflectance data. Finally, we note that the monotonic variation of the reflectance slope with doping provides us with an independent measure of the doping level for the Bi-2212 system.

Dimensional crossover and anomalous magnetoresistivity in single crystals $Na_xCoO_2$

The in-plane ($ρ_{ab}$) and c-axis ($ρ_c$) resistivities, and the magnetoresistivity of single crystals $Na_xCoO_2$ with x = 0.7, 0.5 and 0.3 were studied systematically. $ρ_{ab}(T)$ shows similar temperature dependence between $Na_{0.3}CoO_2$ and $Na_{0.7}CoO_2$, while $ρ_c(T)$ is quite different. A dimensional crossover from two to three occurs with decreasing Na concentration from 0.7 to 0.3. The angular dependence of in-plane magnetoresistivity for 0.5 sample shows a \emph{"d-wave-like"} symmetry at 2K, while the \emph{"p-wave-like"} symmetry at 20 K. These results give an evidence for existence of a \emph{spin ordering orientation} below 20 K turned by external field, like the stripes in cuprates.

Metamagnetic Transition in Na$_{0.85}$CoO$_2$ Single Crystals

We report the magnetization, specific heat and transport measurements of high quality Na$_{0.85}$CoO$_2$ single crystals in applied magnetic fields up to 14T. In high temperatures, the system is in a paramagnetic phase. It undergoes a magnetic phase transition below about 20K. When the field is applied along the c-axis, the measurement data of magnetization, specific heat and magnetoresistance reveal a metamagnetic transition from an antiferromagnetic state to a quasi-ferromagnetic state at about 8T in low temperatures. However, no transition is observed in the magnetization measurements up to 14T when the field is applied perpendicular to the c-axis. The low temperature magnetic phase diagram of Na$_{0.85}$CoO$_2$ is determined.

Doping Effects on the two-dimensional Spin Dimer Compound $SrCu_2(BO_3)_2$

A series of compounds M$_{0.1}$Sr$_{0.9}$Cu$_2$(BO$_3$)$_2$ with Sr substituted by M=Al, La, Na and Y were prepared by solid state reaction. XRD analysis showed that these doping compounds are isostructural to SrCu$_2$(BO$_3$)$_2$. The magnetic susceptibility from 1.9K to 300K in an applied magnetic field of 1.0T and the specific heat from 1.9K to 25K in applied fields up to 14T were measured. The spin gap is deduced from the low temperature susceptibility as well as the specific heat. It is found that the spin gap is strongly suppressed by magnetic fields. No superconductivity is observed in all four samples.

Infrared probe of the electronic structure and charge dynamics in Na$_{0.7}$CoO$_2$

We present measurements of the optical spectra on Na$_{0.7}$CoO$_2$ single crystals. The optical conductivity shows two broad interband transition peaks at 1.6 eV and 3.2 eV, and a weak midinfrared peak at 0.4 eV. The intraband response of conducting carriers is different from that of a simple Drude metal. A peak at low but finite frequency is observed, which shifts to higher frequencies with increasing temperature, even though the dc resistivity is metallic. We discussed the origin of the interband transitions and the low-frequency charge dynamics based on the results of band structure calculations and quasiparticle behavior observed in ARPES experiment.

Infrared spectroscopy of the charge ordering transition in Na$_{0.5}$CoO$_2$

We report infrared spectra of a Na$_{0.5}$CoO$_2$ single crystal which exhibits a sharp metal-insulator transition near 50 K due to the formation of charge ordering. In comparison with x=0.7 and 0.85 compounds, we found that the spectral weight associated with the conducting carriers at high temperature increases systematically with decreasing Na contents. The charge ordering transition only affects the optical spectra below 1000 cm$^{-1}$. A hump near 800 cm$^{-1}$ develops below 100 K, which is accompanied by the appearance of new lattice modes as well as the strong anti-resonance feature of phonon spectra. At lower temperature $T_{co}$, an optical gap develops at the magnitude of 2$Δ\approx3.5k_BT_{co}$, evidencing an insulating charge density wave ground state. Our experimental results and analysis unequivocally point towards the importance of charge ordering instability and strong electron-phonon interaction in Na$_x$CoO$_2$ system.

Optical study on doped polyaniline composite films

Localization driven by disorder has a strong influence on the conducting property of conducting polymer. A class of authors hold the opinion that disorder in the material is homogeneous and conducting polymer is disordered metal close to Anderson-Mott Metal-Insulator transition, while others treat the disorder as inhomogeneous and have the conclusion that conducting polymer is a composite of ordered metallic regions and disordered insulating regions. The morphology of conducting polymers is an important factor that have influence on the type and extent of disorder. Different protonic acids used as dopants and moisture have affection on polymer chain arrangement and interchain interactions. A PANI-CSA film, two PANI-CSA/PANI-DBSA composite films with different dopants ratio, and one of the composite films with different moisture content are studied. Absolute reflectivity measurements are performed on the films. Optical conductivity and the real part of dielectric function are calculated by Kramers-Kronig(KK) relations. $σ_1(ω)$ and $ε_1(ω)$ derivate from simple Drude model in low frequency range and tendencies of the three sample are different and non-monotonic. The Localization Modified Drude model(LMD) in the framework of Anderson-Mott theory can not give a good fit to the experimental data. By introducing a distribution of relaxation time into LMD, reasonable fits for all three samples are obtained. This result supports the inhomogeneous picture.
