Magnetic field-induced phases in a model S=1 Haldane chain system

An $S=1$ Haldane chain is a one-dimensional (1D) quantum magnet where strong fluctuations result in quantum disordered singlet ground state with a gapped excitation spectrum. The gap magnitude is primarily set by the dominant intrachain interaction ($J_\text{1D}$). An applied magnetic field closes the gap at $B_\text{c1}$ and drives the system into a gapless Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL) regime, followed by, at lower temperatures, a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) ground state, persisting up to $B_\text{c2} \propto 4 J_\text{1D}/g\mu_B$. Almost all previously studied experimental realizations of such systems were based on transition-metal complexes which typically suffer from intrinsic anisotropies or large $J_\text{1D}$ values, limiting the access to the full theoretical phase diagram. We report a comprehensive study of TLL and BEC phases in the organic Haldane chain system 3,5-bis(N-tert-butylaminoxyl)-3'-nitrobiphenyl (BoNO). The absence of anisotropy and a moderate $J_\text{1D}$ enable exploration of the complete $B-T$ phase diagram. Through $^1$H nuclear magnetic resonance, combined with theoretical analysis, we characterize the TLL properties, map the BEC phase boundary $T_c (B)$, determine the associated critical exponent $\nu \approx 0.66$ at $B_\text{c2}$, and demonstrate universal quasiparticle scaling in the quantum-critical regime. These results provide full experimental validation of theoretical predictions for field-induced phases in an $S=1$ Haldane chain, made over two decades ago.

Investigating field-induced magnetic order in Han Purple by neutron scattering up to 25.9 T

BaCuSi$_2$O$_6$ is a quasi-two-dimensional (2D) quantum antiferromagnet containing three different types of stacked, square-lattice bilayer hosting spin-1/2 dimers. Although this compound has been studied extensively over the last two decades, the critical applied magnetic field required to close the dimer spin gap and induce magnetic order, which exceeds 23 T, has to date precluded any kind of neutron scattering investigation. However, the HFM/EXED instrument at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin made this possible at magnetic fields up to 25.9 T. Thus we have used HFM/EXED to investigate the field-induced ordered phase, in particular to look for quasi-2D physics arising from the layered structure and from the different bilayer types. From neutron diffraction data, we determined the global dependence of the magnetic order parameter on both magnetic field and temperature, finding a form consistent with 3D quantum critical scaling; from this we deduce that the quasi-2D interactions and nonuniform layering of BaCuSi$_2$O$_6$ are not anisotropic enough to induce hallmarks of 2D physics. From neutron spectroscopy data, we measured the dispersion of the strongly Zeeman-split magnetic excitations, finding good agreement with the zero-field interaction parameters of BaCuSi$_2$O$_6$. We conclude that HFM/EXED allowed a significant extension in the application of neutron scattering techniques to the field range above 20 T and in particular opened new horizons in the study of field-induced magnetic quantum phase transitions.

Multiple Magnetic Bilayers and Unconventional Criticality without Frustration in BaCuSi$_2$O$_6$

The dimerized quantum magnet BaCuSi$_2$O$_6$ was proposed as an example of "dimensional reduction" arising near the magnetic-field-induced quantum critical point (QCP) due to perfect geometrical frustration of its inter-bilayer interactions. We demonstrate by high-resolution neutron spectroscopy experiments that the effective intra-bilayer interactions are ferromagnetic, thereby excluding frustration. We explain the apparent dimensional reduction by establishing the presence of three magnetically inequivalent bilayers, with ratios 3:2:1, whose differing interaction parameters create an extra field-temperature scaling regime near the QCP with a non-trivial but non-universal exponent. We demonstrate by detailed quantum Monte Carlo simulations that the magnetic interaction parameters we deduce can account for all the measured properties of BaCuSi$_2$O$_6$, opening the way to a quantitative understanding of non-universal scaling in any modulated layered system.

Detection of a Disorder-Induced Bose-Einstein Condensate in a Quantum Spin Material at High Magnetic Fields

The coupled spin-1 chains material NiCl$_2$-4SC(NH$_2$)$_2$ (DTN) doped with Br impurities is expected to be a perfect candidate for observing many-body localization at high magnetic field: the so-called "Bose glass", a zero-temperature bosonic fluid, compressible, gapless, incoherent, and short-range correlated. Using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), we critically address the stability of the Bose glass in doped DTN, and find that it hosts a novel disorder-induced ordered state of matter, where many-body physics leads to an unexpected resurgence of quantum coherence emerging from localized impurity states. An experimental phase diagram of this new "order-from-disorder" phase, established from NMR $T_1^{-1}$ relaxation rate data in the (13 $\pm$ 1)% Br-doped DTN, is found to be in excellent agreement with the theoretical prediction from large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulations.

Analytical and numerical studies of disordered spin-1 Heisenberg chains with aperiodic couplings

We investigate the low-temperature properties of the one-dimensional spin-1 Heisenberg model with geometric fluctuations induced by aperiodic but deterministic coupling distributions, involving two parameters. We focus on two aperiodic sequences, the Fibonacci sequence and the 6-3 sequence. Our goal is to understand how these geometric fluctuations modify the physics of the (gapped) Haldane phase, which corresponds to the ground state of the uniform spin-1 chain. We make use of different adaptations of the strong-disorder renormalization-group (SDRG) scheme of Ma, Dasgupta and Hu, widely employed in the study of random spin chains, supplemented by quantum Monte Carlo and density-matrix renormalization-group numerical calculations, to study the nature of the ground state as the coupling modulation is increased. We find no phase transition for the Fibonacci chain, while we show that the 6-3 chain exhibits a phase transition to a gapless, aperiodicity-dominated phase similar to the one found for the aperiodic spin-1/2 XXZ chain. Contrary to what is verified for random spin-1 chains, we show that different adaptations of the SDRG scheme may lead to different qualitative conclusions about the nature of the ground state in the presence of aperiodic coupling modulations.

Spatially Resolved Magnetization in the Bose-Einstein Condensed State of BaCuSi2O6: Evidence for Imperfect Frustration

In order to understand the nature of the two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensed (BEC) phase in BaCuSi2O6, we performed detailed 63Cu and 29Si NMR above the critical magnetic field, Hc1= 23.4 T. The two different alternating layers present in the system have very different local magnetizations close to Hc1; one is very weak, and its size and field dependence are highly sensitive to the nature of inter-layer coupling. Its precise value could only be determined by "on-site" 63Cu NMR, and the data are fully reproduced by a model of interacting hard-core bosons in which the perfect frustration associated to tetragonal symmetry is slightly lifted, leading to the conclusion that the population of the less populated layers is not fully incoherent but must be partially condensed.

Impurity effects in coupled-ladder BiCu2PO6 studied by NMR and quantum Monte Carlo simulations

We present a 31P NMR study of the coupled spin 1/2 ladder compound BiCu2PO6. In the pure material, intrinsic susceptibility and dynamics show a spin gap of about . Substitution of non magnetic Zn or magnetic Ni impurity at Cu site induces a staggered magnetization which results in a broadening of the 31P NMR line, while susceptibility far from the defects is unaffected. The effect of Ni on the NMR line broadening is twice that of Zn, which is consistent with Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) calculations assuming that Ni couples ferromagnetically to its adjacent Cu. The induced moment follows a 1/T temperature dependence due to the Curie-like development of the moment amplitude while its extension saturates and does not depend on impurity content or nature. This allow us to verify the generically expected scenario for impurity doping and to extend it to magnetic impurity case: in an antiferromagnetically correlated low dimensional spin system with antiferromagnetic correlations, any type of impurity induces a staggered moment at low temperature, whose extension is not linked to the impurity nature but to the intrinsic physics at play in the undoped pure system, from 1D to 2D systems.

Impurity-induced magnetic order in low dimensional spin gapped materials

We have studied the effect of non-magnetic Zn impurities in the coupled spin-ladder Bi(Cu1xZnx)2PO6 using 31P NMR, muSR and Quantum Monte Carlo simulations. Our results show that the impurities induce in their vicinity antiferromagnetic polarizations, extending over a few unit cells. At low temperature, these extended moments freeze in a process which is found universal among various other spin-gapped compounds: isolated ladders, Haldane or Spin-Peierls chains. This allows us to propose a simple common framework to explain the generic low-temperature impurity induced freezings observed in low dimensional spin-gapped materials.

NMR Response in quasi one-dimensional Spin-1/2 Antiferromagnets

Non-magnetic impurities break a quantum spin chain into finite segments and induce Friedel-like oscillations in the local susceptibility near the edges. The signature of these oscillations has been observed in Knight shift experiments on the high-temperature superconductor YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.5}$ and on the spin-chain compound Sr$_2$CuO$_3$. Here we analytically calculate NMR spectra, compare with the available experimental data for Sr$_2$CuO$_3$, and show that the interchain coupling is responsible for the complicated and so far unexplained lineshape. Our results are based on a parameter-free formula for the local susceptibility of a finite spin chain obtained by bosonization which is checked by comparing with quantum Monte Carlo and density-matrix renormalization group calculations.

Mechanisms for Spin-Supersolidity in S=1/2 Spin-Dimer Antiferromagnets

Using perturbative expansions and the contractor renormalization (CORE) algorithm, we obtain effective hard-core bosonic Hamiltonians describing the low-energy physics of $S=1/2$ spin-dimer antiferromagnets known to display supersolid phases under an applied magnetic field. The resulting effective models are investigated by means of mean-field analysis and quantum Monte Carlo simulations. A "leapfrog mechanism", through means of which extra singlets delocalize in a checkerboard-solid environment via correlated hoppings, is unveiled that accounts for the supersolid behavior.

Thermodynamics of impurities in the anisotropic Heisenberg spin-1/2 chain

The thermodynamics of finite open antiferromagnetic XXZ chains is studied using field theory, Bethe Ansatz and quantum Monte Carlo methods. For the susceptibility a parameter-free result as a function of the number of sites L and temperature T beyond the scaling limit is derived. The limiting cases T/J >> 1/L (J being the exchange constant), where the boundary correction shows a logarithmically suppressed Curie behaviour, and T/J << 1/L, where a crossover to the ground state behaviour takes place, are discussed in detail. Based on this analysis we present a simple formula for the averaged susceptibility of a spin-1/2 chain doped with non-magnetic impurities. We show that the effective Curie constant has a highly non-trivial temperature dependence and shows scaling in the low-temperature limit. Finally, corrections due to intra- and interchain couplings and implications for experiments on Sr_2 Cu_{1-x}Pd_x O_{3+δ} and related compounds are discussed.

Chain breaks and the susceptibility of Sr_2Cu_{1-x}Pd_xO_{3+δ} and other doped quasi one-dimensional antiferromagnets

We study the magnetic susceptibility of one-dimensional S=1/2 antiferromagnets containing non-magnetic impurities which cut the chain into finite segments. For the susceptibility of long anisotropic Heisenberg chain-segments with open boundaries we derive a parameter-free result at low temperatures using field theory methods and the Bethe Ansatz. The analytical result is verified by comparing with Quantum-Monte-Carlo calculations. We then show that the partitioning of the chain into finite segments can explain the Curie-like contribution observed in recent experiments on Sr_2Cu_{1-x}Pd_xO_{3+δ}. Possible additional paramagnetic impurities seem to play only a minor role.

Quantum spin glass in anisotropic dipolar systems

The spin-glass phase in the $\LHx$ compound is considered. At zero transverse field this system is well described by the classical Ising model. At finite transverse field deviations from the transverse field quantum Ising model are significant, and one must take properly into account the hyperfine interactions, the off-diagonal terms in the dipolar interactions, and details of the full J=8 spin Hamiltonian to obtain the correct physical picture. In particular, the system is not a spin glass at finite transverse fields and does not show quantum criticality.

Comment on "Disorder Induced Quantum Phase Transition in Random-Exchange Spin-1/2 Chains"

We reconsider the random bond antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 chain for weak disorder and demonstrate the existence of crossover length scale x_W that diverges with decreasing strength of the disorder. Recent DMRG calculations [Phys. Rev. Lett. 89, 127202 (2002); cond-mat/0111027] claimed to have found evidence for a non-universal behavior in this model and found no indications of a universal infinite randomness fixed point (IRFP) scenario. We show that these data are not in the asymptotic regime since the system sizes that have been considered are of the same order of magnitude or much smaller than the crossover length x_W. We give a scaling form for the xx-spin-correlation function that takes this crossover length into account and that is compatible with the IRFP scenario and a random singlet phase.
